Retro rock ‘n’ soul band go modern.

Screen Shot 2015-04-23 at 3.12.02 PMAlabama Shakes’ 2012 debut Boys & Girls rocked retrospectively like Aretha Franklin’s recordings at Muscle Shoals’ FAME Studios. Conversely, their sophomore album Sound & Color sounds more informed by D’Angelo and Flying Lotus. The instrument tones still resonate with vintage flair (the band sounds like they’re playing out of the same gear), but the production is very 21st century R&B. –Eric Shea

In the dude dominated realm of riff-rock, Ruby The Hatchet are a much welcome breath of fresh air.

Screen Shot 2015-04-23 at 3.25.06 PMFronted by female singer Jillian Taylor, the Philly quintet’s second album Valley Of The Snake rocks with all the muscle of their heavily resonated contemporaries. But Taylor’s slightly raspy inflections bring a sultry strength that sounds like Stevie Nicks singing for Deep Purple. –Eric Shea

Father breaks his wrist off with some ratchet tales of debauchery on Who’s Gonna Get F***ed First.

Screen Shot 2015-04-23 at 3.27.10 PMFreaking the sound of the new Atlanta, his latest release has a funky vibe, like syrup on chicken. Guests Abra, Slug Christ and Ethereal join the party to get sloppy on Father’s drippy beats. This pioneer is blazing new paths for the A. –J. Boogie

Just in time for summer, Vetiver delivers a slice of breezy sunshine.

Screen Shot 2015-04-23 at 3.29.28 PMAndy Cabic is one of those songwriters who make it sound easy, but nuance and detail pervade his work. Moving further into the shimmery sounds of 2011’s The Errant Charm, Complete Strangers will capture your ear at first listen, and keep it interested for the long haul. Beautiful! –Diego Gonzalez

Chicago singer-songwriter takes a classic genre forward with a 21st century voice.

Screen Shot 2015-04-23 at 3.13.29 PMRead up on Ryley Walker and you’re most likely to find comparisons to John Martyn, Tim Buckley, Bert Jansch and John Fahey. Primrose Green sounds like it was made decades ago, invoking the pastoral, acoustic folk-jazz scene of 1970s Britain while retaining a present day magic and freshness. –Michelle Solomon

Chelsea Lately’s former “Staff Homosexual” makes an imperious standup debut.

Screen Shot 2015-04-23 at 3.17.12 PMOn Effable, Guy Branum holds forth on whether or not Canada exists, owning a cashmere hoodie and doing better than “the boyfriend within.” Uniquely, Branum makes listeners feel like they’ve attended the actual recording by tracking use of his terrycloth sweat towel and firing not one but two audience participants. –Kelly Anneken

Neko Case, Gaby Moreno, members of Iron & Wine, Band Of Horses and DeVotchka ably assist in crafting a gorgeous sprawl of desert drift, ebullient twang-pop, cowboy balladry and mariachi moodiness. –Andee Connors

Oldies Curator

I dig all things ‘60s: garage punk, obscure psych, Stax and Motown soul stompers. My first CD purchases were REM’s Out of Time and Boyz II Men’s Cooleyhighharmony. I still own both! I’m pretty much immersed in music – hitting up local record shops, catching live shows at crusty dives, and DJing around town at various venues and bars.

Besides greatly missing the song lyrics, which it appears we will never get back, now the little 20 (or so) second song sample has now gone away. That feature was invaluable in checking out a song that was on someone else's profile just to see if it might be an artist or sound of which you would like to hear more yourself. Why was this feature (such a small but very nice one) removed? You are making Pandora not fun to use anymore.
