Pop music reached record popularity in 2013 with the help of gigantic crossover hits from Rock, R&B, Hip Hop and Dance. Check out 2013 Top Pop for the biggest Pop chart-toppers on Pandora. It was a very good year for TV alums, veteran Justin Timberlake and newcomer Ariana Grande both made a huge splash. Beyond all the hype, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez delivered with the biggest hits of their career. And of course one of the most anticipated releases of the year was from One Direction, following their multi-monster singles. Finally, leading up to his 2014 Superbowl performance, Bruno Mars proved to be a superstar with the energetic “Locked out of Heaven” and “Treasure” to the more emotional “When I Was Your Man”.

2013 Top Adult

Maroon 5 released yet another hit single from Overexposed and OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars” is still climbing the 2013 Top Adult charts. Ed Sheeran emerged as one of the top Pop singer-songwriters of the year, and Sara Bareilles grabbed a Grammy nomination. Crossing over big from Country, Taylor Swift continued to blur genre lines and “Cups” became one of the biggest soundtrack songs of the past 20 years.

Did Adele set the stage or was it “Call Me Maybe” backlash? Emotional female singer-songwriters found their legs in 2013. Lana Del Rey had one of the biggest sleeper hits of the summer and also contributed to the Great Gatsby soundtrack. That said, perhaps the biggest success story of the year was the teenage chanteuse from New Zealand, Lorde is an old soul singing from a 17-year-old’s voice and the world gets it.

2013 Hip Hop and R&B

It was a huge year for the new icons of Hip Hop and R&B, you’ll hear all of them on our 2013 Hip Hop and R&B station. Lil Wayne, Drake and Jay-Z dropped highly anticipated releases and we saw the monstrous return of Eminem. Kendrick Lamar paved the way for LA as the Hip-Hop hotbed for artists such as Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler, The Creator and Kid Ink, but ATL was in the game with Rich Homie Quan and Mike Will Made-it. Kanye West dazzled with groundbreaking production and no holds barred lyrics without a charting single.

Hip-Hop hit the mainstream in 2013. “Hold On, We’re Coming Home” proved to be Drake’s most accessible song to date, and “Crooked Smile” did the same for J. Cole. What was the most infectious song of the Summer? Was it “Can’t Hold Us,” “Blurred Lines” or “Get Lucky?” You can enjoy the biggest hits of the year on 2013 Top Hip Hop and Pop. Justin Timberlake – comeback of the year? Hard to argue with the four hit singles! Also, quite a battle for newcomer of the year in Hip-Hop: Sage The Gemini,  August Alsina or Mike Will Made-It?

2013 Dance and Electronic

Dance and Electronic music continued to influence the mainstream as Daft Punk delivered their long awaited release with Pharrell at the helm. One of the most interesting Electronic crossover hits was “Wake Me Up.”  Avicii wasn’t the only iconic EDM artist to hit it big, 2013 Dance and Electronic was the year of Tiesto, Benny Benassi and Armin Van Buuren.

What was your favorite Pop Dance song? “I Love It,” “Kewella” or “Scream & Shout?” Zedd’s “Clarity” or the haunting Cedric Gervais remix of “Summertime Sadness?”

2013 Top Indie

Capital Cities, Tegan and Sara, The Neighbourhood and Passenger all made 2013 Top Indie and Top Pop playlists. Notable artists may not be new names but expanded their audiences significantly; James Blake and Laura Marling come to mind. It was definitely a big year for CHVRCHES, Disclosure and Haim. Who do you predict will break through in 2014? Many of the emerging Indie and Singer-Songwriters graced the Pandora Whiteboard Sessions, including Kishi Bashi, San Cisco, Eisely, Little Green Cars, Brett Dennen, J Roddy Walston and The Business (just to name a few).
