Summer is in full swing and it’s time to celebrate the USA’s birthday with parades, fireworks and BBQs. So, what’s the first song that comes to mind when you think about summer? What’s the first song that comes to mind when you think about 4th of July? The curation team had a blast putting together Pandora’s 4th of July genre stations, and we’re excited to finally share them with you!

4th of July RadioScreen Shot 2014-06-27 at 2.20.55 PM includes a mix of patriotic tunes across genres sprinkled with summertime favorites. On this station you’ll hear Country, Heartland Rock and popular songs that celebrate American pride; artists include John Mellencamp, James Brown, Miley Cyrus and Simon and Garfunkel.

Another American classic, Barbershop quartet music, has enjoyed a colorful revival. The barbershop served as the community center where African American men harmonized while waiting their turn. In the early 1900s, white minstrel singers adopted the a cappella four part harmony style and performed early standards. Think “Sharp Harmony,” a Norman Rockwell painting from 1936. Our Barbershop Quartet station is perfect for waking up early and prepping the grillables.

In the tradition of Woody Guthrie, today’s country artists continue to write great songs about the land we live in. Patriotic Country is great for grillin’ and  chillin’ before the fireworks start. Woody, Toby, Carrie and Lee are just some of the artists you’ll hear on this new Pandora genre station.

Also new for 2014, Sousaplalooza!  What? You don’t have a parade in your town? Why not round up the neighborhood kids and conduct your own parade with music inspired by “The March King,” the great John Phillip Souza? Go ahead and get your fists pumping to the Michael Jackson of 1915. No really, he was that popular!

Whatever your vantage point, check out Classical Fireworks, a playlist of bombastic classical performances hand-picked by Pandora’s classical curators. Get your battle cry out with some brassy, bold and fiery classical music. This station has music specially created to be the soundtrack for battles, fanfares, fiestas, gladiators, the War of 1812 and more. Composers on this station include Gershwin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky,Ennio Morricone, Saint-Saens, Bizet and Scott Joplin.

Thanks for including Pandora in your 4th of July celebration. Here’s wishing you a safe and fun filled holiday weekend!

Fourth of July Radio goes a lot longer without falling into post-9/11 "God and Flags" country this year, which is nice. But I was hoping most of that music would have been offloaded into Patriotic Country. And Johnny Cash's "Amazing Grace" is still in the mix, which is lovely, but has nothing to do with patriotism.
