Nothing gets me in the spirit like the right song and by spirit I mean holiday spirit. I’m always refreshed to hear new eclectic interpretations of favorite holiday songs. This year, there’s sure to be something to satisfy the holiday music fan in your life: from Pop to R&B, Punk to Classical. If you’d like a sampling of 2013’s newest holiday releases, check out our Today’s Christmas station.

Two of 2013’s most anticipated Christmas albums come from chart-topping women. Pop sensation Kelly Clarkson’s debut holiday collection Wrapped In Red contains five original songs, including the single “Underneath the Tree.” Also releasing her first holiday collection is R&B singer Mary J. Blige. Blige’s A Mary Christmas features guests like Michael Buble, Rod Stewart and Barbra Streisand  is sure to bring on the Christmas cheer.

Country singer Trace Adkins leaves the cowboy hat at home for his debut holiday offering The King’s Gift. Adkins joins the likes of The Chieftains, Alyth McCormack, Emma Stevens and Kevin Costner to produce a collection of Celtic and Folk Christmas carols.

What better way to please the young punk in your life than a holiday album from icons Bad Religion? Their first holiday EP, Christmas Songs include an a cappella interpretation of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and a nod to The Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated” on “White Christmas.”

If you’re a fan of country music and humor then you’re not going to want to go through this holiday season without The Robertsons’ album Duck The Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas. It’s sure to get a few plays this season with original songs like “Ragin’ Cajun Redneck Christmas” and “Hairy Christmas,” featuring Luke Bryan.

Marvin Sapp’s first holiday album Christmas Card, features favorite Christmas songs with a Gospel twist. He teams with popular R&B singer Joe for the album’s first single “Home For Christmas” and Gospel supergroup Commissioned on “What Child Is This” and “Honor The King.”

Classical violinist Joshua Bell follows up his critically acclaimed 2009 album At Home With Friends with his newest holiday collection Musical Gifts From Joshua Bell And Friends. This album brings blurs genre lines with a roster of all-star performers like Placido Domingo, Chick Corea and Gloria Estefan. If you prefer more traditional Classical Christmas offerings, enjoy the newest holiday releases from Friar Alessandro, Libera and The Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

This year we’re hearing new holiday music from several more classic artists. Pop crooner Johnny Mathis’ sixth holiday collection Sending You A Little Christmas features a host of duets with artists like Natalie Cole, Vince Gill, Amy Grant. English singer-songwriter and pub rock hero Nick Lowe released his first holiday album, Quality Street: A Seasonal Selection for All The Family which includes a few holiday classics and original compositions like “Christmas At The Airport” and “A Dollar Short of Happy”. Set to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2014, Funk legends Kool & The Gang are celebrating the holidays with their album Kool For The Holidays, a fusion of Funk, R&B, Pop, Jazz and Gospel.

We hope that this year’s new holiday offerings on Pandora can provide a soundtrack to create new memories while staying in the holiday tradition of gift giving, great food and most of all love and cheer.

Oldies Curator

I dig all things ‘60s: garage punk, obscure psych, Stax and Motown soul stompers. My first CD purchases were REM’s Out of Time and Boyz II Men’s Cooleyhighharmony. I still own both! I’m pretty much immersed in music – hitting up local record shops, catching live shows at crusty dives, and DJing around town at various venues and bars.
