myTouch_now_playing.jpgWhen we set out building Pandora four years ago we knew that our work wouldn’t be done until we’d found a great way to unlock the service from the PC. Just over a year ago the iPhone let us take the first compelling step in that direction and the year since has been filled with a bunch of mobile product launches from Pandora.
I’m delighted to announce that today we’re finally ready to extend the Pandora experience to Android. As of today Pandora is available directly from Pandora at as well as in the Android Market.
I’m really excited about how Pandora for Android turned out. You listen to all the Pandora stations that you’ve been listening to on the web and the application is deeply integrated with many of the core Android features too. You can control playback from a home screen widget, “deep tap” any artist or song in the standard Android music player and jump into Pandora to discover other similar artists, make a smart folder to get quick access to your stations from the home screen, buy tracks you discover from the Amazon MP3 application, use your Android address book to share stations with your friends, and of course listen in the background while you’re doing other things on the phone.
Pandora runs on both the myTouch and the G1 today and I’m also excited to announce that we’re working with Sprint to ensure that Pandora works flawlessly on the HTC Hero when it becomes available next month.
This one has been a long time in coming; thanks so much for your patience. Hope it was worth the wait and that you enjoy taking Pandora with you as much as we enjoyed building it.

Hi, Why does Pandora require access to contact data? It makes me leery to install the app for this reason. Peace of mind from an honest response as to what the app does with this information if it accesses it would be greatly appreciate. Thanks!

Please add these features to the Android Pandora App: Add a CTI (Current Time Indicator) to the Android Pandora App please. I like to know how much time I have left to rate a song! Add more space between the buttons on the Android Pandora App in landscape mode. It's too easy to miss tap a button while in a moving car! Enlarge the "Now Playing" text in landscape mode on the Android Pandora App for high-resolution devices (Droid, Nexus One, Many more). Thank you so much for this wonderful service!!

I have been using it for a while but sadly I had to uninstall it because it requires the READ_CONTACTS permission. This is a radio player, why is it mocking about with my contacts? Please remove this permission requirement and I'll be happy to re-install your player.

I like Pandora Radio. I want to listen to it on my Droid. I WILL NOT GIVE YOU ACCESS TO MY CONTACT DATA! Ever. Period. Thanks for listening.

I would also like to know why exactly does it need contact access?

Why does the latest update now all of a sudden require access to my contacts? There may be a good reason I cant think of, but shame on you for making this change and not being forthcoming about whatever the reason is. That is incredibly shady behavior: (

PLEASE tell us why you require our contact list, why you won't give us the option of withholding it, and exactly what you intend to do with it. I've been thinking of signing up for your service, but if the price is whatever privacy I have left, then the price is too high.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. To those of you who are concerned about the "allow access to contacts" messaging in the Pandora App: The Pandora application includes the capability to share your stations with your friends -- but this is entirely under your control. On installation of the application, you are warned about this capability. If you decide that you want to share a station, Pandora will allow you to select addresses from your contact list. This function would always be initiated by you. Our application does not mine data from the address book or anything else nefarious like that. Hope this addresses your concerns!
