This week we will begin communicating directly with a small number of our listeners as we introduce a 40-hour-per-month limit on free mobile listening.

Most of you reading this will never hit the limit. In fact, it will affect less than 4% of our total monthly active listeners. For perspective, the average listener spends approximately 20 hours listening to Pandora across all devices in any given month.

That said, limiting listening is a very unusual thing to do, and very contrary to our mission so we wanted to share a quick explanation. Pandora’s per-track royalty rates have increased more than 25% over the last 3 years, including 9% in 2013 alone and are scheduled to increase an additional 16% over the next two years. After a close look at our overall listening, a 40-hour-per-month mobile listening limit allows us to manage these escalating costs with minimal listener disruption.

For listeners who do hit the limit, we have a variety of options available to keep the music you love flowing. Listen for free for as many hours as desired on desktop and laptop computers; pay $0.99 for unlimited listening for the remainder of that month, or subscribe to Pandora One for unlimited listening and no advertising.

In short, this is an effort to balance the reality of increasing royalty costs with our desire to maximize access to free listening on Pandora. We will be sure to alert any of our listeners that start getting close to the 40 hour limit. As always, your feedback is welcome.

    Now that I'm getting this message about only having so many hours left, I think I'll be finding a different music service. Disappointing really as I've been with pandora for years. I understand money has to be made but with the amount of advertising done, it should be more than enough. Shame.

    I recently logged in to Pandora from my Facebook and my partner told me that my Facebook seemed like if I was active , but I wasn't on Facebook, I had the Pandora browser (Firefox) open because I was listening to the music , but that's all. I only moved the mouse of the computer about 2-3 times because the music stopped and it asked me if I still wanted to listen to the music to press play something like that .. I want to know please why is my Facebook showing as an active if I wasn't on it

    Although this never impacted me, since I have always paid, if per track royalties are on the rise why not allow us a way to block all music of a particular genre from a channel? I mean, you have to pay to play it. I get that your system listens to patterns within the music I rate to decide what to play next, but it doesn't do a good job of figuring out that I under no circumstances want to hear Christian music no matter how the pattern of the music is set up. Likewise, I'm sure a Christian wouldn't want to hear music of another faith and then there are parents who want to limit that kind of thing. Why not let us black list songs that contain certain words or are specifically religious? At least within a given station, or perhaps account wide. Your system would be all the better for it and you will have less songs to play since less get rejected.

    So sick of hearing the same damn songs over and over...then I run out of skips when I try to leave the twilight zone. Someone else needs to take Pandora's crown stat

    We are so disappointed We only listen on the weekends So we would never even go over 40 hours a month. but when I log on It does not play any music. So am I to understand that it will not work at all now
