Hello listeners!

We are excited to launch a new monthly feature to the Pandora blog: The Pandora Submission Spotlight, where I’ll showcase independent artists of all backgrounds and styles who you might not have heard of and might want to hear more of in the future. Many of these bands are doing it all on their own, some are even on small independent labels. But the one thing they all have in common is that they submitted their music directly to Pandora, can be heard on their own Pandora station and countless others.

photo.jpegThe first band I am pleased to introduce is Bronze Radio Return, who has attributed a large part of their success to being on Pandora. They were added in 2009 and are currently enjoying prominence on big-name artist stations in addition to their own.

Bronze Radio Return is a Hartford, Connecticut-based indie/roots rock band who was discovered at one of their shows by producer, Doug Derryberry (Bruce Hornsby, Ben Folds Five), who then served as producer for their debut self-titled EP in 2008. Their Nashville-recorded full-length album Old Time Speaker peaked at #102 on the College Music Journal (CMJ) Top 200. They garnered even more exposure after several of the album’s songs were featured on the TV show 90210.

Their second album Shake! Shake! Shake! debuted at #4 on the Billboard NE Heatseekers Chart and peaked at #129 on the CMJ Top 200.

The band played for President Obama in 2010 at a rally in Bridgeport, Connecticut and, most recently their song “Shake, Shake, Shake” was used in two episodes of American Idol. They are a fixture on the music festival circuit and have toured the East Coast and Midwest extensively, opening for artists like Grace Potter, John Mayer, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Blues Traveler, Buddy Guy and more. As of now, all the band’s albums are still self-released.

Bronze Radio Return’s music has been described as a cross between Creedence Clearwater Revival and Dave Matthews Band, and should appeal to fans of Mumford and Sons, The Black-Keys, The Decemberists and Blind Pilot.

Interested in submitting music for consideration to Pandora? Check out our FAQ for more information on how it’s done.

I dig all things ‘60s: garage punk, obscure psych, Stax and Motown soul stompers. My first CD purchases were REM’s Out of Time and Boyz II Men’s Cooleyhighharmony. I still own both! I’m pretty much immersed in music – hitting up local record shops, catching live shows at crusty dives, and DJing around town at various venues and bars.

I have been listening to Bronze for close to 4 years now. To hear them from then until now it is amazing hearing the evolution and refinment of their sound. Bronze is truly one of those bands that after you see them live you will leave the show saying to yourself "MY GOD, HOW HAS NO ONE HEARD OF THIS AMAZING BAND" I play their albums all the time for friends in my car when they ask me of any bands they should start listening too... by the time the track Shake!Shake!Shake! reaches its chorus my friends are begging me to give them a copy of the album. I hope articles like yours will get more people listening to this great band and start helping them get the attention they seriously deserve.

I am a big fan of Big Bang, one of Korean bands. In your Big Bang (Korea) channel's artist profile shows BigBang (Norwegian band). I don't think this is right fact for the Big Bang (korean band). Please check this out and change the Big bang (Korean band)'s artist profile. Here is some info- from Wikipedia; Big Bang (Korean: 빅뱅; commonly stylized as BIGBANG) is a popular South Korean boy group under the management of YG Entertainment. Formed in 2006, Big Bang has grown to become one of the most successful Asian acts in the world. The group consists of leader G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri. Big Bang has been labelled as the "Revolutionary Group of Korean Music Wave"[2] for their unique urban-originated music and fashion style. The members' involvement in composing and producing their own music, most notably G-Dragon's, has earned them respect and praise from music industry experts. During their first year, Big Bang was criticized for being "too short" and "too ugly" for an idol group. Sales from their early hip-hop singles and first studio album BigBang Vol. 1 were disappointing. The group's turning point came with their hit song Lies, which stayed at number one on Korean charts for a record-breaking seven consecutive weeks. Their follow up releases, Hot Issue and Stand Up, furthered their success, spawning hits such as Last Farewell and Haru Haru[3]. From 2007 to 2008, Big Bang received many awards, including "Best Male Group", "Song of the Year", "Artist of the Year", and the Grand Award at the Seoul Music Awards. From 2009 to 2010, Big Bang expanded their endeavors to Japan, and were voted "the Korean group that Japanese fans wish to see the most". They became the first foreign group awarded to receive the "Best Newcomer" award from the Japan Cable Broadcasting Station and "Best New Artist" at MTV Japan. Amidst their Japanese group promotions, the members branched out to do solo activities. Taeyang, G-Dragon, T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri have released solo albums. G-Dragon and T.O.P also collaborated on an album under the sub-unit GD & TOP. Seungri and Daesung have acted in both TV dramas and musicals. T.O.P became a highly acclaimed film / TV drama star. Daesung hosted many of Korea's most popular variety TV shows. After nearly a two-year hiatus in Korea, Big Bang reunited in 2011 with their successful album Tonight. However, promotions were cut short when multiple members encountered legal issues. In November 2011, representing the Asia-Pacific region, Big Bang emerged as the inaugural "Best Worldwide Act" winner at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards.[4] This was the first time in six months where all five members were seen together. In 2012, Big Bang released their 5th Mini Album Alive in Korea and Japan. They are currently embarking on their first ever World Tour visiting 25 cities in 16 countries. Fans of Big Bang are known as VIPs. Their official light stick is a signature yellow crown, which reflects Big Bang's title as the Kings. Thank you!

It is a good thing to include indie artists. They put in all the work and I commend you Pandora for this inclusion. It is our main focus to include indie artist at our small online internet radio station based out of miami and one day we hope to directly compete with you the leader!

These guys are OK, but what about Janice Whaley and the Smiths Project?? Is there anything better than Janice's indie SF style?

I'll declare an interest here - I'm a huge fan of an artist you recently rejected, Janice Whaley. Janice produces original music (in all senses of the word - it is mostly created through voice alone), and records and markets it on a totally DIY basis. I wish the indie artists you showcase here all the luck in the world, and if I could access Pandora (am in the UK) I would listen. However, you seem to be highlighting this band - who have already attained some level of success - because of the reflected glory they cast on Pandora. I would encourage you to reconsider your rejection of Janice's music - as a fan, you would expect me to - not only in the light of how interesting, hypnotic, and thrilling the music is - but also because she is one of those artists that meets your criteria of the individuals you really should be supporting. All the best.

Janice Whaley is the most creative, innovative, and amazing indie musician you're not currently playing on Pandora. She has created a career in a very short period of time from making astoundingly beautiful music. Well-written alternative songs created ALL FROM SAMPLES OF HER VOICE. And it's not some Petra Haden, Bobby McFerrin nonsense either. Most of the time you wouldn't even know her work WAS made of voice. Her singing voice is up there with Imogen, Elizabeth Fraser, Lisa Gerrard, etc. She does everything herself from singing, sampling, recording and producing to the astounding embroidered artwork off her new album Patchwork Life. Janice Whaley is a TRUE INDIE ARTIST doing things with music unlike anybody else and even David Bowie's record producer Tony Visconti is blown away by her. She's been written up in countless blogs, The Guardian UK, newspapers and radio stations all over the place. You should be celebrating her, not blowing her off.

Congratulations on spotlighting talented indie artists and for acknowledging the need to support them. Unfortunately, Pandora conflicted with this creed by rejecting the hardworking and talented uprising artist, Janice Whaley with her new album, Patchwork Life. If anyone represents the concept of independent artist, it's Janice. Had Pandora taken a moment to glance at the progression of Patchwork Life and the snowballing recognition it's gaining among reputable persons in the music and entertainment industry, I suspect Janice's album and work would not have been so easily dismissed. She is a talented and wonderful artist who deserves recognition from Pandora and needs to be shared with others.

Pandora should strongly consider adding the music of Indie artist Janice Whaley to its musical recommendations! Janice is a well respected indie artist whose music transcends the indie label. Her music would fit nicely with such artists as Bjork, Polica, Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, as well as 80's artists such as The Smiths, Tears for Fears and Curt Smith. Janice's creative use of her voice and indie recording techniques are inspiring and deserve respect and most of all to be HEARD! Please strongly consider adding Janice's music to Pandora's music options! Thanks, Mike
