Actually my most loved Janet Jackson songs are from Rhythm Nation 1814 and before. If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be the title track from "Control". Second has to go to her work on one of her brother's songs, Scream. Her work both vocally, and in the video brought back the tough, fiesty Janet from her earlier work. Dropping the sedate, romantic facade was a breathe of fresh air at the same time it was exciting. It was perhaps an image of Janet if she had stayed on the path created by Control and Rhythm Nation. Being male, that more assertive voice of her earlier work was much more to my liking than the later ballads and sugary pop that expanded her fanbase hugely in demographics. I loved almost every song she did with Minneapolis producers, especially Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam. As with Prince, my love of Janet's work declined when the Minneapolis sound went out of style and was mostly dropped by AAA artists. A shame, but then again I was an alternative DJ in the early 80s, and have a station here with a very large and still growing seed list: 80s Alternative Ultimate On second thought, I think.Control and Pleasure Principle tie for first. ;)
