Pandora SXSW – Day Two: Americana

The Strumbellas set the tone for this year’s Americana Discovery Den with some next level, pop-savvy, twang-rock. The Cactus Blossoms then serenaded us with heavenly harmonies that are adding to the canon of classic country brother acts like The Everly Brothers, The Louvin Brothers or The Delmore Brothers. Lydia Loveless and her band brought the house down with a blend of rowdy, ’90s flavored alt country and classic rock tones laced with punk energy. English tunesmith Jake Bugg channeled a blend of early Bob Dylan and John Lennon before honky tonk angel Margo Price reminded everyone what real country music is supposed to sound like! Meanwhile, Sam Outlaw is keeping Los Angelino country rock alive and kicking with that bygone Laurel Canyon vibe. Wynonna And The Big Noise played a raucous set of smokey blues rock that would sound right at home on a stage at Sturgess. Knowing she’d be a tough act to follow, Hayes Carll took a different Americana road – one that closely resembled Dylan’s Highway 61. Asleep At The Wheel are keeping the western swing torch burning bright! But it’s Jack Ingram who understands that if you’re going to close down Pandora’s Americana Discovery Den, you’ve got to crank the amplifiers and kick out the footlights.
