Artist Debuts

SPZRKT

SPZRKT (pronounced Spazzy Rocket) is Xavier Adams, a 24 year-old R&B singer who three years ago, auditioned for The Voice, America’s Got Talent and American Idol but never made it past the first round. Now under his moniker, his eclectic debut album Bonfire is drawing comparisons to artists like John Legend, Gnarls Barkley and MGMT.

The Artwoods were an English rock, R&B and freakbeat band that were active between 1964-1967 and was fronted by Arthur Wood, the brother of Ronnie Wood (of the band Faces and later The Rolling Stones). The band released seven singles and one studio album on the Decca and Parlophone labels, including “What Shall I Do” and “In The Deep End.” They also put out a handful of R&B/blues covers like Leadbelly’s “Sweet Mary” and Sam & Dave’s “I Take What I Want.” But they never landed a hit despite having a formidable reputation as a live attraction.

So What

So What is a San Francisco and Oakland based quartet who aptly describe their sound as “hard gum.” They effortlessly blend the early 1970s inspired hard attack of post-skinhead “smoothie” rock like Coloured Balls, The Equals and Slade with the catchy, sticky bubblegum hooks of same-era acts such as Sweet, Hello and The Bay City Rollers.

New Music

GallagherI Am Who I Pretend To Be

In his new release I Am Who I Pretend To Be, prop comic Gallagher leaves his sledgehammer and watermelon at home to get laughs the old fashioned way—telling jokes!  The stand-up veteran offers a curmudgeonly view of contemporary relationships, weather forecasts and the constant threat French people pose to the American way of life.  Gallagher’s first album since his Looking for Intelligent Life tour in 2011, I Am Who I Pretend To Be was recorded as part of his 2014 farewell tour.

ODESZAIn Return

Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight, aka ODESZA, drop their first full-length recording on Ninja Tune. After opening up for Pretty Lights they’ve solidified their sound into a pleasing mix of hip-hop beats, EDM soundscapes, and indie dance swagger. In Return finds the duo collaborating with a variety of vocalists, which adds color to a very focused sound. If you’re a fan of our Chillstep, Indie Dance or Trap genre stations, we think you’ll find something to love on In Return.

Tito RojasViajero

Tito Rojas, “El Gallo Salsero,” is a living legend of Puerto Rican salsa, with a career spanning almost 40 years. Recorded in New York and Puerto Rico, Viajero is his third release for his independent label TR Records. It features a well-crafted mix of classic and contemporary sensibilities, mixing the folkloric influences of Puerto Rican music with the straight ahead salsa delivery that we’ve come to expect. One part romántica and one part dura, todo bailable!

Robin WilliamsScreen Shot 2014-09-15 at 9.12.10 AMReality…What a Concept! & Throbbing Python of Love

In the wake of his tragic and untimely death, two early out-of-print Robin Williams albums have been re-released.  His Grammy winning 1979 album Reality…What a Concept! And his 1983 follow-up Throbbing Python of Love are Williams at his manic best, ricocheting from character to character without missing a beat.  Both are now spinning on Pandora, so be sure to listen for Williams’ riffs on Soviet communism, white wine, Hollywood life and his Elmer Fudd/Bruce Springsteen mashup.

Genre Station

R&B 2014

The latest R&B music from indie acts to established vocalists. A contemporary take on the soulful, sexy sound of 2014 with new artists like Jhene Aiko, Trey Songz, TinasheAugust Alsina and Jeremih. From hit singles to deeper cuts, 2014 R&B is sure to touch your soul.

Musicologist

I dig all things ‘60s: garage punk, obscure psych, Stax and Motown soul stompers. My first CD purchases were REM’s Out of Time and Boyz II Men’s Cooleyhighharmony. I still own both! I’m pretty much immersed in music – hitting up local record shops, catching live shows at crusty dives, and DJing around town at various venues and bars.
