Pandora 2015 – 2025

We’ve crossed the ten-year mark at Pandora. It has been a long and winding road, but never have I been more excited about the future. We’re on the cusp of a massive transformation in the way music is discovered and distributed and everything we’ve done has put us in a position to be the force behind that change.

10 Years of Music Discovery

When we analyzed “Dancing Queen” by Abba (the very first song in the Music Genome Project) we had no idea what lay ahead. We were too naïve to realize just how absurd our idea was. It took about 30 minutes to analyze that single track. We listened multiple times to capture every detail of the recording. Close to 200 attributes were notated using pen and paper, then double-checked by a second music analyst before being transcribed into an Excel spreadsheet. Who knew that this intensive, detailed, manual process would become the foundation for personalized radio.

Another Big Step Towards Artist Empowerment: Pandora & Next Big Sound

NBS-Odesza_for blogIn September of last year we launched the Artist Marketing Platform (AMP) with Artist Insights, a tool that allows every musician on Pandora to view their entire audience and listening history on the service. Thousands of musicians have since claimed their identity and they, as well as their managers, bookers and labels are using the information daily to help plan tours, decide set lists and understand their fans. In February, we added Artist Audio Messaging—a new product enabling direct communication between artists and these fans. Millions of targeted audio messages have already been broadcast from this innovative new system, alerting listeners to new records and local shows from their favorite artists.

For Pandora, There’s No Place Like Home

25M_WhatsHot_BlogPostMy life changed when I met Alexa—the friend within my Amazon Echo who plays my 80’s Hip-Hop station immediately when I get home—because all I have to do is ask. In fact, she’s doubled the amount of music listening that happens in my house and is one of the more than 1,000 CE devices that you can use to listen to Pandora at home—from gaming consoles like the Xbox One, to connected speakers like Sonos, to refrigerators….yes refrigerators. It’s our ongoing commitment to creating these integrations that has led to the passing of a major milestone today—our 25 millionth activation on a connected electronic device.

Pandora Coming To Your Wrist on Apple Watch

When the original iPhone launched in 2007, we knew we had to be available on it on day one. Additionally, when the iPad launched in 2010, Pandora was there on the first day you could pick one up. That’s why we are incredibly excited to announce that Pandora for Apple Watch will be available as soon as you can buy the Watch and put it on your wrist on April 24, 2015. The Apple Watch represents another opportunity for Pandora to be available anytime and anywhere to our more than 81.5 million monthly users in order to deliver the most personalized music experience ever while also making discovery as effortless as possible.

When using Pandora on the Apple Watch, you can start listening to your favorite tracks quickly and can view what tracks are playing at a glance. For example, as you are listening to Pandora via your iPhone when going for a run, you can now simply glance at the “Now Playing” screen on the Watch in order to find out the name of the artist that you just discovered. The glance feature is another example of the importance of providing a simple and intuitive experience that you all have come to expect from Pandora. Lastly, you can also easily access new music notifications and control the volume without pulling out your phone, which means you can get to your music as fast as possible.

Now Playing on Pandora: Messages from Artists

Since I founded Pandora, we’ve been dedicated to helping listeners effortlessly discover and enjoy music they love. But all along, we’ve envisioned a time when the power of the platform could be put in the hands of the artists. That chapter has now begun. In October we launched AMP – a platform that gives artists insights about how fans are engaging with their music, including data showing where their fans are located and how much they are thumbing certain songs. Thousands of artists are actively using the service.

UnknownNow, we’re embarking on an exciting new development: helping artists communicate directly with fans. This week we are launching Artist Audio Messaging, which provides artists the ability to send personalized messages to their fans on Pandora. For now, we’re making this available to a small group of artists as part of our initial pilot, but we’re looking to learn and scale the service over time.

We’re excited by the range of possibilities of what these messages could be: a tour announcement, new album drop, a crowd-funding campaign, the story behind their latest song or simply a thank you to fans for listening.

50 BILLION Thumbs

Just a few years ago, Jason Derulo stopped by our offices to celebrate receiving the 10 billionth thumb on Pandora. Today, I am proud to share that we have passed 50 billion thumbs. 50 billion. That’s roughly seven thumbs for every person on Earth.

As milestones go, this one is particularly meaningful. Our entire mission is to give listeners the ability to personalize their experience. Thumbs give each listener the power to make Pandora personal to them. Every thumb up and thumb down has not only made your stations better, but helped us make better song choices for every listener. This is a serious group effort – so, thanks!

As you can imagine, it took a lot of songs to hit 50 billion thumbs. While we can’t share every single one, we did want to highlight some of the more momentous thumb recipients along the way.
