Pandora on the Road: Georgia

Welcome to Roadtrip Central! This is a continuing chronicle of my journey around the country, as I meet with Pandora listeners and musicians to learn about what you want to see happen with music in this digital age. I hope you enjoy reading about my past stops - from a three person meet-up in a Biloxi diner to a packed get-together in a huge MIT lecture hall.

I hope you'll take a minute to share your favorite bands, clubs, lodging and eateries in your city. If you don't see your state on the blog, just post to 'Other States' and I'll make a note to try and visit! I look forward to meeting and hearing from you!

Cheers...

Laura Reed & Deep Pocket :: Concert Series :: Vol. 4

Tift MerrittThe response we've gotten to our new Concert Series has been intense and really positive. Thanks for watching our daily song updates, and for letting us know who you want to see on our stage.

We have two new shows in the on-deck circle for you.... first up, straight out of Atlanta, four songs by the neo-soul big band Laura Reed & Deep Pocket:

"Well"

"Why Have A Frown"

"Don't Go" (my personal favorite)

"Forces At Play."

That's Laura and part of the crew, pictured at left.

Enjoy!

More Studio Stories, and some Dissonance

James Chambers

When we were last in Atlanta at Tree Sound, we checked out
how the studio has reduced its carbon footprint to zero,
and saw how this space-age recording facility champions its "ecophonic" style and design.

We've returned for two more episodes at Tree.
First, we meet James "Groove" Chambers,
a producer of great R&B and hip hop records who built his reputation working with the Nappy Roots.

Then, this week, we hear more about Atlanta's laidback and cooperative music community,
and hear how that supportive approach has shaped the great records that have come out of that city in the last few years.

There's also a new episode of "The Musicology Show,"
all about consonance and dissonance in classical music.
Russell Johnson lays out a bit of the history of modern dissonance, from Renaissance to Baroque to Classical to Romantic and all the way into contemporary atonality. The page has sound samples from these different eras as well.

As Edgard Varese once said, "The modern-day composer refuses to die."

Amen to that,
Kevin

Atlanta recap

We'd like to thank all of our Atlanta listeners who joined us for our "Walk Through the Genome" party at Tree Sound Studios on March 9. It was a pleasure to enjoy the positive live sounds of Laura Reed & Deep Pocket, as well as those of the great new band Folk Festival. We loved getting to meet a great bunch of Georgia listeners, and answering some very thoughtful questions.

You can hear more music from Laura Reed & Deep Pocket in our new video about Tree. Here are some photos from the event, courtesy of Pandora's Jennifer Zeidler:

Our new video series, "Studio Stories" - first up, Green Recording

Tree

Meet the man who is revolutionizing environmentally-smart recording. Paul Diaz of Tree Sound Studios has turned his Atlanta studio into a completely eco-friendly zone. See why artists such as Outkast's Andre 3000 choose to reduce their carbon footprints by recording at Tree.

This show marks the first in our brand new video series called "Studio Stories." We'll be introducing you to many of the people behind the scenes who record, mix and produce the songs you love. Stay tuned as we meet these fascinating musical minds and hear their tales of creativity.

Cheers to Atlanta!
Kevin

Atlanta, GA

Terribly belated blog entry for a great visit to Atlanta, GA. Spent the morning with folks at Turner, then met a rowdy bunch of music enthusiasts at the Mellow Mushroom.

Very animated conversation over pizza and beer. Some local radio promoters, musicians, technologists, bloggers, web designers... then headed out for some live music...
