Profiles
Dear Listeners,
We've just updated our site to make it easier for you to find and adjust your privacy settings. We thought it was important to make this adjustment to better reflect the realities of the internet today. If you're a returning listener you've probably already seen a reminder about your Pandora profile page, something we've offered since we launched.
This reminder provides you with the immediate opportunity to see your profile, make it public, private, or learn more. If you click on 'Learn More,' you'll be taken to some FAQs.
New listeners will see a similar message when they register and we're in the process of sending emails to the folks who listen to Pandora exclusively on mobile devices, encouraging them to access their Pandora account on a computer to check out our new privacy features.
All profile pages on Pandora now have a prominent 'Privacy Settings' link on the upper right. These settings let you specify how public you want your profile to be and, if you're a Facebook user - whether or not you'd like to import your information from Facebook to Pandora.
We're big believers in the social aspect of music discovery and sharing and want to make it as easy as possible, but we also want to make sure we respect each listeners' personal comfort when it comes to this. It is our sincere hope that this new format does just that!
As always - we welcome your feedback about this. It's a very important issue to us and we want to get it right.
Thanks for taking the time to read this through - and keep on listening!
- Tim (Founder)

Excellent. Thanks Tim!
Question: Can we make a comment on a song or artist bio and still have our profile be private? For instance, if I comment on an artist, does that mean someone can click on my name, visit my profile page, and make a comment on my profile?
Posted by: Dave at August 3, 2010 4:31 PM
Pandora is 1 of the best radio stations ever. I love being able 2 put n a song and it creat a station around that song. Great work
Posted by: tyler brickey at August 4, 2010 5:59 AM
On Ubuntu Google Chrome, that Pandora profile question layer won't go away. I can't use Pandora's web site to play now.
I did manage to get to my Profile and make it private, but the profile layer is still appearing.

What is the deal with the lack of "thumbs up" songs appearing in somewhat frequent rotation on a personal station? I have thumbed up over 200 songs on a station, but certain specific songs that I have not thumbed up seem to appear more frequently than songs I actually rated thumbs up. Very odd behavior for the algorithm, you should look into it.
If there is one thing I wish is that you gave the ability to ban an entire artist's catalog. there are times based on things I like, i get a plethora of songs from an artist that I don't care for, but I constantly have to "thumb down" the individual songs.
By allowing to ban an artist as well as like an artist, the algorithm could be even better at suggesting songs.

Hello Pandora,
I'm sorry, but there seems to be a fundamental problem here. Before this pop-up window, I had no idea that there was a profile page that was public by default. I had no idea that my musical choices were being broadcast to the world. And, only now do I learn that if I had used the same email address for Pandora as for Facebook, some Facebook information might appear on my profile, automatically, without asking for my permission???
Haven't you learned anything from the recent debacles with Facebook?
I am now going to stop using Pandora, as I feel that there has been a serious violation of trust.
Regards,
Tony

How do I get rid of the privacy popup? It covers the screen and I don't see an option to turn it off - I can't believe I'm the only one who has this question
Posted by: william kingrey at August 4, 2010 8:05 PM
Waiting for someone to slap me for taking this long to discover Pandora. I absolutely love it! I do agree with Santa that banning an artist would be cool.
Posted by: Izzy at August 4, 2010 8:48 PM
Thanks.. But how do I place a photo on my profile without using facebook?
Posted by: Steve at August 4, 2010 9:48 PM
the pop-up window advertising the profile page is stuck in place and i cannot click any of the links contained in it. i also can't operate my station because the window won't go away. Help…i want to use my station, but this window is preventing it.

Thanks Tim,
My kids were instrumental in referring me to your site.
I love the organization, format and user freindliness of Pandora.
I particularly enjoy the pop up...are you listening. I do leave the office from time to time and the reminder is helpful.

@Dave -- If your profile is private, it will stay private whether you leave comments on other pages or not. Listeners with profiles marked private can still comment on artists and songs, etc. If someone tries to click back to their name (profile page), they'll just get the message that "this profile is marked private".
@Scott -- Unfortunately Linux is not one of our supported operating systems. However, I would suggest trying with a different web browser.
@Santa -- Pandora stations will stop playing music by an artist that you have consistently thumbed down *on that station*, but thumbs are station specific. This means that even if you've thumbed down an artist twice on Station A (thus preventing them from playing any more on that station), you may hear them on your new Station B. Once you've thumbed them down a couple of times on Station B, you won't hear them there anymore either. Your suggestion of a global artist ban is an interesting one, we'll definitely keep in mind!

I, on the other hand, would like to be able to tell Pandora a higher number than 2 to use when deciding whether to ban an artist from a station. Sometimes I will get several songs I don't like from an artist I generally like, and I have to be very careful what I thumb down to avoid banning the artist. I'd rather have an explicit way to ban an artist from a station, with no limit at all, or a very high one, on the number of individual songs I could thumb down without affecting other songs by the same artist.

@Tony -- You're not alone. Before this update, it was possible to listen to Pandora without realizing that you had a profile, or that it could be made public or private. That's why we decided to make this change -- to highlight the profile to all users and make it necessary to choose between public or private before continuing.

Hello -
There is no support page so I am reduced to posting here.
How can I stop Pandora from automatically playing when I start my browser? I like having Pandora in a tab all its own, but I don't want to have to scramble to find the mute button every time I start work. Can you address this?
Thanks.
Posted by: George at August 6, 2010 9:39 AM
@George -- It sounds like you've made www.pandora.com your homepage. Access your web browser's settings menu and change your homepage to another website (e.g. your favorite search engine). When you want to listen to Pandora, just open a new tab and go to www.pandora.com.
Oh, and for technical support in the future, send us an email at pandora-support@pandora.com! Hope this helps.

RE: Blocking of artists using thumbs down. Is there any way to thumbs down a particular album from an artist rather than the whole artist? Why isn't there a management page for your likes/dislikes? I could probably block a litany of artists before you ever play them. Doing this in advance should save you on the fees you pay to start a song that gets thumbed down.
Posted by: Richard at August 7, 2010 8:51 AM
I am not able to access Pandora since you've made the change. Your site says I need plug-ins, via, Java. My security states that Java Toolbox is a security risk and that I rarely use it...so I removed it. Confused as to what's going on.

Is it my imagination or does Pandora play what I would consider a substantial amount of recorded live music relative to studio music?
Posted by: Nick at August 7, 2010 9:00 PM
You guys ROCK! I've been using Pandora for a while now and had tried once before to listen to Indian music with no success. I've recently discovered that you now have quite the selection of Indian music to choose from - I'm SO excited about it! YOU ARE AWESOME!
Posted by: Anshu at August 8, 2010 8:52 PM
@Richard -- Thanks for the suggestion. Please check out this FAQ entry for more information on fine-tuning your stations: http://blog.pandora.com/faq//contents/67.html
@Richard Hartley -- Sorry to hear that. Please send an email to pandora-support@pandora.com detailing the problem and our tech support team can assist you!
@Nick -- We include both studio and live recordings on Pandora. It could be that the artist you are listening to has released a large number of live records. Feel free to give a thumbs down to any live tracks that play if you don't like them...it won't prevent the studio version of that song from playing.

How fun! I just discovered Pandora on my new samsung internet tv and I already love it.
Since everyone is always putting in their 2 cents (sorry!) I would love Pandora to work with other aps... for instance could I use the USA Today ap to read the news and have Pandora on in the background. Possibly that is a samsung thing but I thought I would put it out there...
Anyway, how fun and it does seem like magic worthy of Pandora's gift from Zeus when the new music actually sounds familiar and great.
Have a good one and thx!

I like Pandora in theory, and have to use it at my office since I'm not allowed to bring in a real radio. I wish that Pandora could understand me a little better though. Can't there be a way to BLOCK an artist??? I really hate Michael jackson, but anytime I try to listen to The Drifters - there he is. I end up making new station after new staion, just to get something like what i really wanted. Isn't it bad enough that the song I originally ask for won't play? Do I really have to be stuck with other artists I dont like??
Posted by: Sara B at August 17, 2010 9:35 AM
PLEASE - ENOUGH WITH THE ADS!!!! I love you guys, and I know you are finally profitable. I saw an interview with your founder and CEO a few weeks back - congrats on being profitable after 9 years. Seriously - love you guys and the apps, but PLEASE - enough with the commercials. Maybe once every 30 minutes like a radio station, but sometimes I hear the same shit every 5 minutes. I'm going nuts. I really will stop using this if the ads don't slow down. Yes, I can always by the ad free plan, but I'm broke as of now, and my wife would kill me for spending grocery money on this. Please don't upset your oldest listeners by over saturating with ads. I'm about to leave.

My daughter had a Pandora login and my wife was listening to it. I thought I would create my own login on the same computer and have my own stations!
My daughters time ran out and she couldn't listen any more - and I can't listen either! I went to another PC and can listen OK.
What gives? Should I just close out all accounts and chalk it up to a lost cause?????

Hey, is there any way to include beats per minute/tempo as a critera for songs? So often artists have fast/slow songs and I only want to hear one kind. Haven't found any controls for this nor did I find anything in the help section. I've chosen stations named "Upbeat Blues" etc but discovered that was rather meaningless - still contained lots of slow put-you-to-sleep music. When I listen to Pandora at work, I'm hoping for something with a bit of life and don't want to keep going back to Pandora to 'dislke' slow ones or search for a new station.
Note: the blog was was the only place around for feedback as far as I could tell, so posting my question here.
Posted by: Paula at August 30, 2010 3:50 PM
Thanks for the continued feedback everyone.
@Michael -- You're most welcome to use multiple Pandora accounts on the same computer. However, if one account hits the cap, the machine will be locked for all users, until the person that locked it by reaching the cap pays $.99 to listen for the rest of the month (or upgrades to Pandora One) to unlock it.
@Paula -- While we don't have the ability to choose specific BPM ranges on Pandora, we do have some curated Genre stations that might interest you. Under the music player on the main page (http://www.pandora.com), click on the lower left box that says Genre Stations to see these -- hopefully one will be the right level of "upbeat" for you!
Posted by: Ryan, Pandora Support at August 31, 2010 3:45 PM
You guys are doing a good job. I like the fact that I can assign many different types of music to one station. The problem I have is that you tend to feature a theme too long (e.g. selecting a long sequence R&B (or any particular genre)).
I have tried using the "I'm tired of this song" feature and this seems to work but what I really want to say is that I am tired of this genre for the time being.
Can this be improved?
Thanks

I just purchased an IPhone 4 and the version of Pandora has commercials on it. How do I get music only like I did before?
Posted by: Bob Byrne at September 2, 2010 1:17 PM
Tim,
Pandora is a truly amazing interface that only continues to get better. However you select music based on artists I select is fantastic. I have it on my computer and on my tv, pandora are yet to make a platform that works with my cell phone but I am sure one will come out soon.
I own the samsung mythic If you can put a rush on the development of that I would appreciate it ;)

Hey, I had been automatically given a free subscription to PandoraONE when it first came out and now, after this change, I'm not longer on PandoraONE. Why's that?
Posted by: Gus at September 7, 2010 9:45 PM
99 cents for the rest of the month? 36 dollars a year? There are plenty of sites offering your service for free if I listen to ads. So no thanks. Maybe if you gave a little more control of the listening order. Your thumbs up thumbs down does not allow for frequent listening of favorite songs. I realize your company is original to this service. Unfortunately, your company is like most other companies that start something original. They think their name recognition will carry them through. They refuse to change and offer the same benefits as newer sites. There is no customer loyalty on the internet. Sorry. I wish you well.
Posted by: j gates at September 14, 2010 1:55 PM
Perhaps I'm the only one but I have too often hit the song advance button when I wanted the volume control or the pause. This seems to happen during the favorites of course. We often wait to hear a song until the kids (birds) are put to bed. No way back? Aggravating! Just me? Please change the position of one of these buttons.
Other than that we're on my second year of Pandora and it is time and money well spent.

I love Pandora, but lately I haven't been able to do as much with it. When I try to go to my list of thumbed-up songs for a particular station, it won't work. The help tab won't work and several of the others won't either. There seems to be no way to get to my station information anymore. What's going on?
Posted by: Tracy Musick at September 16, 2010 4:31 PM
You guys still have not addressed the issue of how to get rid of that pop up "Did you know about your pandora profile page" It pops up and freezes out the rest of Pandora. How do you close it??? At least four people above have asked this question...
Posted by: Lorie at September 19, 2010 8:34 AM
I had heard of Pandora some time ago but was never quite persuaded to try its service. While listening to a podcast I heard a reference to Pandora and that it was the one technology that stuck with the podcaster. This motivated me to try Pandora despite the fact that I use an iPod and listen to NPR (in the car). Your service has reconnected me with music that I had forgotten about and shown me some fascinating artists which I had never considered. Given the busy and complicated life we all lead in today’s society this is a refreshingly outstanding use of technology. This is one that is arguably at least as valuable (on a personal level) as my “smart phone.” As a technology professional I really appreciate how you have turned the complexity that goes on behind your service into a simple, elegant way for all of us to enjoy and discover music. Thank you!

Hi Pandora,
I'm sorry to bring this up, but I have one issue with pandora up-why are there trojan ads on pandora. I have to say that these are pretty embarassing, andI actually had to hide my computer from my friend as the pandora screen came up . This is heightened by the fact that tere is a link that says, "laubnch video." Please, I beg you, take these ads away. I may be a prude, but I know I haven't lost the art of blushing or being flustered by such ads.
Thanks,
Kathleen

Hey Pandora
WAKE UP!
I have had two incidents today where the artist did not match the bio.
The first was a group called Caravan, a very good rockabilly outfit. The bio was about an all girl Gospel group. Not the same.
The second was music from Ben Webster, with a bio about Oscar Peterson! Love Oscar, but not what I was looking for.
Someone smoking something in the head office up there or what?

A friend of mine just told me about Pandora last night. I find R. Carlos Nakai the best to meditate to and fall asleep to at the end of a long day. I noticed it played only 3 or 4 songs before it automatically shut off. I did not want to disturb my meditation, so, I just continued in silence, but was annoyed nonetheless. When I looked at the laptop in the morning, there was some sort of comment that Pandora asked if I was sleeping or even still at the computer. Why doesn't Pandora continue to play for at least one to two hours at bedtime? That would be my primary time of usage - what is my best way of handling this?
Posted by: Beth at October 9, 2010 10:32 PM
From the Wall Street Journal:
"Both the Android and iPhone versions of Pandora, a popular music app, sent age, gender, location and phone identifiers to various ad networks."
This is really, really terrible.

How DO you get rid of those Trojan ads on the right. I just got this new computer and I feel IE has built a profile of websites and data I search and now I get these 'less desirable' adsites that I wish not to be displayed. What must I do to get different ads to appear? (eg., ads appear on medical issues I prefer not to have appear for my children to see). Do I need to RESET my Internet Explorer Options or should I choose a less invasive browser. The age of privacy is diminishing to a point where we'll be exposed to everyone.
