Pandora on iPad

Tomorrow morning as the first iPads are delivered, we'll be launching an entirely new Pandora application built from the ground up for the iPad.

Pandora on iPad has been completely re-imagined for the iPad's big touch interface. I think of it as the ultimate lean-in Pandora experience. Just tap the Pandora icon and let the music play while you read about the bands and music you discover. Pass it back and forth with a friend and share your discoveries. My hope is that it can play the same role that the album cover did when I was a kid -- something concrete to enjoy and share as the music plays. There's something magical about that, and this really is a magical device.

For me, this is the culmination of an almost 20 year wait. Some kids go to college so they can become a doctor. Some go with the dream of success in business. Some go in pursuit of knowledge. Some go just to have a good time.

I went so I could work at Apple.

That's not a joke, or an exaggeration. I literally went with that singular goal and by some stroke of incredible luck, I managed to land a job there upon my graduation 18 years ago. Working at Apple was an amazing experience; the company is full of incredible people driven by a desire to change the world. During my four years there I saw all sorts of incredible products: some commonplace (the PowerBook), some infamous (the Newton) and some that never saw the light of day. Chief among those that were never released were all manner of "tablet" Macintoshes. Powered by pens and touch, these fabled devices where designed to set the Mac free from the confines of the keyboard. In the end though, it wasn't meant to be. We could never settle on the right combination of hardware, software, and economics that would make the machines practical and popular.

None the less, there was something incredible about even those early experiments, and I've waited almost 20 years for some variety of tablet from Apple that would finally resolve all the issues and get the formula right. So it's with great anticipation that I look forward to the launch of the iPad tomorrow.

I'll be in line at an Apple Store with everyone else to pick mine up. If you decide to do the same, I hope you'll give Pandora on iPad a listen and let us know what you think. We'd love the feedback.

I'm not a techno leader, so I doubt I'll be getting an iPad for years, but it sounds like the app on the iPad will be pretty good. I'll probably be able to try it on someone else's pad.

Since you mentioned content about the bands hopefully this means you'll put a little more effort into getting information about more obscure new bands on Pandora. I find that most of the bands I like tend to be newer, lesser known bands and they often come without any information about the band.

It would also be nice to have the dates available on most of the releases. Newer or more obscure CDs tend to be missing their release year.

I almost always find the information I want on the web and educate myself. A great feature/program would be the ability for people to submit band and/or CD release information (backed with sources of course) to be used by Pandora. Getting a byline on the info would be great, getting a month's Pandora One credit for a certain number of accepted submissions would be even better.

I was wondering what you would do for the iPad. I can't wait to check it out!

Posted by: Brett Ingram at April 2, 2010 7:44 AM

This is awesome! Your app makes me want to get the iPad. Album covers and bios, as well as the style are incredible. This is the perfect direction for you to take. I love Pandora and subscribe to Pandora One. Maybe the Pandora web site could start doing something similar to this in the future? I'm excited.

Sweet post.. As a programmer I view typing as the fastest way to get things done, it's hard to touch n feel your way through code. I'm waiting till they finish the interface to let you control the device at the speed of thought.. Maybe in 20 years..

Also, pandora is actually better on my android than in a browser, now I will definately be getting an iPad.

Posted by: AskApache at April 2, 2010 9:04 AM

I can't wait to try it!

Go Pandora!

Oooh, let me know - if you guys have any good recommendations on Speakers for the Ipad, to enhance listening to Pandora even more! Yeah!

You are a genius! We love Pandora.

Posted by: Michael Meeks at April 2, 2010 6:22 PM

I just got an Android based phone and I LOVE Pandora. I put in one band (Queen, haha) and it's like it knows everything else I like!!! Totally better than stupid satellite radio!

The Pandora iPad app is wonderful, a very pleasant surprise on my new tool/toy. Thanks.

Posted by: Mark at April 3, 2010 2:32 PM

I just got my ipad and went and downloaded the pandora application, its so awesome, but there is a down side of this, it won't play if you want to use another application. so that means that you can only listen to pandora while the application pandora is active, otherwise you won't be able to listen to it if you would like to do something else with the ipad.

can you guys be able to fix that?

thanks

In reading your post, it made me realize how important the album covers were to me. I had never thought about just how often I read the jackets and the song lyrics inside them. The photographs on their outsides made it so easy to find the music I was searching for when they were on a bookshelf with only their spines showing.

One of the many reasons I enjoy Pandora is because, sometimes, I forget the names of some of the groups whose music I enjoyed in the 60's and 70's. I can easily search through names and bookmark those songs that are special to me. I was always a listener who wanted to hear many different artists at a sitting - I rarely heard an entire album and thus had multiple scratches on the records from moving the needle around. Pandora feeds my fickleness in artists and allows me the luxury of axing an artist immediately if I don't care for the song.

I am an elementary school teacher, and many of my students use Pandora after school while they are waiting for their parents to pick them up. They also are big fans!

I don't know about the Apple device you speak of, but if it's as great as Pandora, then it HAS to be good stuff!

Posted by: Sharon Rippen at April 4, 2010 5:41 AM

How do you get one of these and what is the cost?

Posted by: Ann at April 4, 2010 8:00 AM

It took me a few days to figure out that the update to my pop-up blocker was blocking me from logging in at Pandora.

In those few days, I went and listened to the competition which should be called Lackluster. In less than an hour, I became thoroughly frustrated and disgusted with the music they shoved at me that had nothing to do with the musician/style I preferred, the busy-busy screens, the HOW LOUDLY CAN WE YELL AT YOU! advertising, and the 'LOOKIT US AREN'T WE GREAT!' mentality that seemed to pervade the site. It was all about them and not about the music.

I have NEVER been so grateful for Pandora as I am now. Thank you for your clean design, the way you categorize the music you offer your listeners, your ease of use, and the way you get out of the way and let the music speak for itself.

Screw the competition, I'm home with Pandora.

Just realized that there is in fact one way Pandora can multitask on the iPad. Load Pandora, lock the screen, and then hit the small flower icon on the bottom left. Pandora is now the musical accompaniment to the photo slideshow of my family.

Thanks for a great app,
Peter

Love this site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pandora hasn't been playing music for me in a while (at least a few days). I haven't yet used it this month... Is there a technical issue you guys don't know about yet?

Posted by: Ethan at April 5, 2010 12:54 PM

the ipad sounds cool and all but this is just my opinion about pandora one it's really stupid to have someone pay $36.00 a year. Well hope you take the time to read this and remeber this is MY opinion hope you change it to having to pay for pandora (i doubt you will though)

Posted by: Mabel at April 5, 2010 1:39 PM

Love Pandora...which is why this is a waste of time and money. You can't listen to Pandora on the iPad and do anything else, which is the standard mode of operations on both my PC and my smart phone (Droid).

Posted by: Solonor at April 5, 2010 7:41 PM

i couldnt help but notice that i specifically typed in two artist as specific stations and i havent heard that artist until 35 to 40 min into the station. this bugged me enough that i had to blog about this. just letting the big guy know as a customer.

Posted by: steve at April 5, 2010 8:29 PM

it's hard to justify this app until apple allows multi-tasking. I'd love to be able to listen to music as well as read the NYTimes. I don't plan on listening to music and staring at my iPad. But awesome that a App is designed.

Posted by: Kymaro at April 7, 2010 1:55 PM

Well now it seems that Pandora has a lot more commercials than any other radio stations. Congratulations Pandora, you did it!

Posted by: Laurence at April 7, 2010 9:11 PM

What's the deal with not being able to log into Pandora lately. I paid the annual fee and am starting to get a little irritated I can't log-in..

Posted by: Mitch at April 8, 2010 6:45 AM

I have been looking forward to getting my IPAD on April 2nd, I actually sold my PC laptop to purchase it. I have been dreaming off the day I could bring it home, dock it on my kitchen counter, download my favorite cookbooks and Pandora of course and simeltaneously rock out while cooking. Sadly April 2nd came and went and I have not purchased my IPAD, why you ask? I sadly found out you cannot run two apps at the same time, I would have to choose between a book or Pandora! Of course I can listen to my ITUNES in conjunction with reading a book, however my ITUNES library is about 80G. Pandora is so great because it does not take up precious hard drive space especially on the limited hard drive the IPAD has. So I will hold off for now and keep dreaming about the perfect IPAD for me.

Posted by: Alisha Doyle at April 8, 2010 8:47 PM

First, I love Pandora and all it does. The only problem I find, is that you have a Lyrics tab but very few song come with the lyrics. I think its misleading and should be upgrated more often.

Posted by: Frank at April 9, 2010 1:40 PM

I just joined your service and I have to say it's wonderful!!! With iPhone os 4, it's gonna be just magical!

Thanx for all your work and dedication to make this a music lovers dream!!!!

Posted by: Eddie Bermudez at April 9, 2010 6:39 PM

Your passion for Apple should be tempered by the notion that you didn't create an Pandora app for the iPad, rather, Apple beneficently allowed you to do so (in a controlled environment and with final approval...) you were given permission from on high to do the thing that you loved, and that is a good thing in a way, but also, kind of sad.

Posted by: Michael at April 10, 2010 5:52 AM

Was thinking about the Pandora One, but noticed that much of your webpage was in flash, and I can't get that on my iphone (or ipad, if I had one). Are you working towards HTML5 support? I would be more inclined to purchase Pandora One if that were the case.

Thanks,

Posted by: Daniel Pepper at April 11, 2010 11:20 AM

With your continued pursuit of what it seems to me is to not only provide music of similar genres to users but to provide an atmosphere to purchase music from artists that users 'like' (proof based on the buy feature), I was thinking perhaps, you can develop an application or a feature on your website that creates an easily read database/list of all music, perhaps divided by 'genres', that users 'like'. With this feature, users can keep track of what music they have purchased or own. Then the user could further filter their list to music they do not yet own but 'like'. And you can maintain your place as the middle man between between the user and the music they 'like' and would like to purchase and eventually purchase... Just a thought. Please keep me informed if you should develop a feature such as this. Thank you.

Posted by: Richard at April 11, 2010 11:32 PM

I generally love Pandora, but two things bother me.
(1) I agree with poster Steve (April 5, 2010) that when you specifically ask for an artist it takes FOREVER for that artist to come on. I know you want to introduce us to other similar music, but do it gradually by interspersing it with those we already know we like. If we ask for someone, then please give us THAT artist. (2) I'd prefer you not start loading a station - the last station I played - as soon as I open your web page. I usually want to choose another station and it just takes more time, which is an irritant.
Okay, here's one more suggestion for improvement: allow us the option to REPLAY a song that just played. Sometimes I walk back to my desk to hear the tail end of one of my favorites, but I've missed it.

Posted by: Lora Holiman at April 12, 2010 12:59 PM

Thanks so much for the great feedback everyone!

To Aaron, Peter, Solonor and all those who have requested the ability to run Pandora in the background -- Apple has said that multi-tasking will be coming to the iPad this Fall. We're as excited about this as you are!

To those who want help creating better Pandora stations, check out this entry on our FAQ: http://blog.pandora.com/faq/contents/88.html

Posted by: Ryan, Pandora Support at April 13, 2010 4:27 PM

This is great! However the one problem I see you cannot run Pandora in the background while performing another task on the iPad because you cannot multi-task with the iPad. So all Pandora on the iPad is a single radio app where you can't do anything else. I have an iPad ordered but I think I'll continue to listen to Pandora via my iPhone while I work on the iPad.

Posted by: Terry Lyons at April 18, 2010 7:23 AM

well ia'm so glad everyone can hear pandora i can;t because it's not on T-mobile slide side kick so sad get with the times the slide blows away blackberry OMG!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Christina at April 19, 2010 5:16 PM

Nice job on the iPad version, but two improvements would really help.

#1 Give us a volume control, since the hardware control on the iPad itself is a pain to use when it's in the Apple case.

#2 Widen the left column so our station names don't have to be so truncated.

I am loving my Pandora, but how I have a Roku and the instructions to add Pandora don't do it. I had no problem getting netflix started, but that is all I can figure out. I cannot figure out how to get my access code, and I am getting extremely frustrated. Pandora is not an option for me on the opening Roku screen. I am also frustrated that the help menu is completely unhelpful.

I am not able to access the channel store from the Roku. Is that the problem? If so, what the hell am I supposed to do!

Posted by: Karin at May 8, 2010 7:59 AM

I still haven't purchased an iPad yet but reading the posts here makes me wanna borrow an iPad from a friend and try the experience. I look forward to knowing and reading more about Pandora the next time I visit here.

I just found out that I can not "add variety" to my Pandora stations from the iPad. Was very disappointed to discover this, I wanted to and an artist to one of my stations however alas I could only create an entirely new station.

Posted by: Jmaxxz at May 15, 2010 11:40 AM

Pandora is fantastic! Simply brilliant!!

Posted by: Lisa at May 15, 2010 9:36 PM

The iPad version of Pandora is drop dead gorgeous and a joy to use. Cheers to Pandora for having it available so fast. Its a shame the desktop version of Pandora looks so ill formatted in comparison. Heck even the iPhone app with its tiny screen area looks and feels better.

It would be great if Pandora could write Windows Mac and Linux specific versions of the desktop app. Drop the cross platform Adobe Air stuff. Its a jack of all trades a master of none. The web interface is also pain with tiny text and odd formatting. Something's not right when the experience of using Pandora of your home is so easily trumped by mobile devices.

Posted by: minimalist at May 16, 2010 8:02 AM

I don't want your service and you DO NOT have my permission to access or connect with any of my Facebook personal information. All of your directions (and Facebook's) for opting out are bogus - don't work and don't exist. Intentional I'm sure.

Great job on this version 1.0 app for the iPad!!

A few things that are sorely needed, please:

1. The ability to edit stations.
2. The ability to control volume on the screen, without having to fumble for the hardware volume controls.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks,
Scott

I don't know what you guys are talking about, every new band based station I make plays a song from that band first.

Plus the quick mix station seems to compile all my stations to a "best of" my separate stations.

I have the free version.

Since when can you only listen to forty hours of music a month? I thought this was a completely free radio station! of course everyone wants money... but isn't that why we have to sit through listening to those crappy adds? Disappointed!

Posted by: october Van Selus at June 21, 2010 8:38 PM

I have been requesting to hear Kentucky Rain by Elvis Presley but have not had any luck. How do I get this song to play. Today I requested it as a station but it has not played yet. I have heard a lot of Beatles music but not the one song I want to hear.

Seen Tim on the Colbert Report. Jumped online at midnight and now not only am I a grateful old man but a fan and promoter. Neil Young radio? Really? Quit it. This is better than a grand kid mowing the grass for free. Thanks.

Dear Pandora,
I love the station. I subscribed to the free 24-hour upgrade. I had been thinking about upgrading, and I figured that for the extra $24/year, it should be a lot better.
Well, it's already pretty good for $.99/month, and during my 24-hour free trial, it wasn't any better.
I kept getting advertising, as usual. Nothing else was different, so I believe I will stay with the plan that I have.
Thank you.

Editing quick mix is essential. Some people add a variety of artists to one station. That works but it's much more work if you want variety. It seems to be better when you create single artist stations. If you want variety, quickly edi the quick mix station. That way you can instantly listen to one normal artist based staion as usual or add several different artist stations to the quickmix station to get the variety. The later is much more flexible and allows for mixing genres with more control and easy tweaking. You also keep all the stations intact as single artists.

Unfortunately you can't currently edit the quickmix station. It's useless on the iPad unless it happens to be set how you want it already, from your computer or phone.

Posted by: Tony at July 4, 2010 10:23 PM

Can you please make your desktop app or webpage similar. The webpage interface is really limited and both it and the desktop app are in flash which really use a lot of resources on my computer. It's noticeable when running other resource intensive applications. Native app for Mac or Windows?

Thank you for the awesome music.

Have sent this suggestion to Pandora so many times, and for me it seems such an obvious one. Now before everyone throws rocks at me for suggesting a much-needed improvement, please allow me to say that without Pandora 12-hours a day working on the computer would be just that - Work.

As someone given to systems and organization, it strikes me odd that I must waste time "playing with" a the "Saved Station Menu From Hell". I have tried everything, cryptic naming like J1S - jazz, #1 song, Sax.

Can anyone feel my pain?? My brilliant suggestion for the day: Why not look at some other online stations, Jango and Slacker
for example, and at least TRY to put some kind of a menu together that is Just a Little Bit User Friendly?

And before my frustration is misunderstood, I am a subscriber and support of Panda - now and will always be.
