Seattle Town Hall: March 17, 2010

Wonderful meetup in Seattle on Wednesday evening. Lots of great feedback as usual, and some cool ideas. One was the ability to launch a station by typing in a favorite radio station's call letters. Also clearly a lot of interest in ability to control the stations in a more granular way - ie. by attributes. I'm also continuing to hear a steady drumbeat of developers wanting access to an API to start creating new apps. It remains a tricky one for us because of licensing and monetization issues, as well as raw resources to support.

The other thing I'm hearing, and heard last night, was the growing use of Pandora on things other than a computer. Lots of folks have ONLY used it on a bluray, or a Sonos, or a iPod touch, etc. I really can't wait to see the growth of devices in the home - we're clearly beginning to hit an inflection point there.

Thanks to the great staff at the Library who were a great help getting this all put together. What an incredible monument that place is.

Next up Monday night in the Big Apple...

I would like to see more native support for Pandora on personal media players and radios.

I also want to see Pandora supporting F.L.A.C so that for Pandora One users or just Pandora in general so that I can play F.L.A.C encoded music on my personal media player or mobile phone.

Cause hardcore music lovers tend to also be audiophiles you know... :D

As evidenced by my $500 dollar Shure head phones and Sansa Clip mp3 player which by the way... SUPPORTS F.L.A.C.

Thank you for the nice event. I appreciated the information and feedback. I especially liked the huge and big variety of guests that were there. It proves the truly great expansiveness and variety of people and music that there is enjoyed in Seattle.

I too was impressed by the diversity of the audience. Music is a strong and far-reaching bridge.

1.
I'm eager to be able to get Pandora on my smart phone (WinMo - I'm at 6.x but heard you mention series 7 -- I can wait). I'm a TMobile subscriber, but only a few of their models now have a Pandora option. Don't know how you do the business relationships, but miss my music! Can't wait to plug my little off-brand phone into my car and get the music flowing for the mood of the moment.
2.
How I got introduced to Pandora: My son was working in a little coffee shop in a small town in Chile. He told me about it, I found it, and shortly thereafter the coffee shop lost it. Not as disappointing a story as your great Saturday nights in small-town Yugoslavia ... and their experience when world-wide access was cut off ... but your explanation of the legal implications softened the disappointment.
3.
Remember to promote the Discoverometer and the Cockpit Interface(a click away from the simple mode). Seattle was interested in both of these. Plus ... some sort of method to see where musicians are performing, perhaps?

"I really can't wait to see the growth of devices in the home - we're clearly beginning to hit an inflection point there."

I couldn't agree more. I had been a very infrequent listener of Pandora in the past - mainly because I'm not often in a position to listen to music at my PC. But last year I added an internet radio (Grace GDI-IR2000) and in the last week, a Blu-Ray player (LG BD570). Both have very good Pandora integration, and as a result my Pandora listening has increased quite a bit. And the less frequent, less intrusive ads with the Pandora service via these devices doesn't hurt one bit (though no doubt you guys are looking at ways to better monetize these streams).

Posted by: John Doyle at March 23, 2010 12:28 PM

Hey, maybe you've heard this a million times. But wouldn't it make sense to allow people to upgrade to Pandora one if they do some song purchases? wouldn't this be a great way to drive song purchases?

Posted by: Marc Katz at March 23, 2010 2:30 PM

After listening to Pandora on my iPhone for countless hours, it only today dawned on me (months later) that Pandora is accessible via the web. Then I wondered how many other listeners have not yet made the connection? You want an inflection point for usage? Advertise this over Pandora (10 second ad): Do you have an internet connection? If so, you have access to Pandora - the best way to listen to music since the invention of music.

Then you will truly see how many others didn't make the connection yet.

Keep up the good work! And Thank You!

Tim,

I just tuned into Pandora for the first time in a while and was in the middle of the best mix that I've ever gotten. I mean a real delight; Joe Cocker, Van Mo, The Allman Brothers, Santana and then an audio commercial from McDonalds. I listened to Pandora specifically to stay away from people trying to sell me underarm deodorant, but there it is.

If you keep track of such things, let me know if you ever drop the commercials and I'll be back.

Until then,
Rodney

This is great, especially while I'm stuck in my cubicle for 8 hours a day.

I commend you on streaming music this way and helping the music community. I worked in the Music Business for 10 years licensing music for ventures just like this one (digital jukeboxes, etc......and I've helped those companies acquire some of the hardest publishing out there!

Keep up the good work, you're making my day!

@Irving - those are media players working with FLAC though and accessing locally saved FLAC files, yes? at this point, Pandora One isn't actually accessing your media library at all, though it does stream at a very high bitrate - 192 kbps. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

@Kris and @Denise - thanks for joining us, eh!

@ghino01 - what kind of devices are you referring to? we play on several portable devices as well as media players - here's more information about that: http://www.pandora.com/on-the-go

@John Doyle - HEY! Glad those devices are treating you well. We love the way Pandora runs on those too.

@Gretchen - Yes and yes. Thanks for those reminders in #3. ;)

..yes i agree.. it was awesome because you cannot only listen it on the i phone but also you can access it in the internet.. !!! great job!!!

I'd love to see a Pandora app for Symbian / S60 (like the Nokia N97). If you're unwilling to develop one, I have no doubt that others will do so if you set up a decent API.

Posted by: Kevin McCoy at March 26, 2010 12:04 AM

I actually prefer listening to the radio than mp3's when I am walking, so thanks Pandora.

Posted by: Daphne at March 26, 2010 10:14 AM

I asked about this in a small group chat with Tim after the meetup (thank you Tim for the extra time), but am going to ask again since I tried finding the feature I am looking for and I am still not seeing it. I would like to be able to search on moods or themes, such as romantic, happy, sad, energized, dance music, etc. I know that my son, who is 22, had the same request when I told him I was coming to the meetup and asked what he wanted. I want Pandora to play dance music for a party or romantic music for an evening with my hubbie. Any chance this could happen? When I put in a mood, I get titles with those words in it and the station is not what I want. P.S. All the free parking vouchers were gone when I left but the Seattle Library gave me free parking anyway! Awesome.

I have added the pandora radio to my portfolio of stations, and i had became a big listener of the station in the recent couple of days, but my main concern is that i wanted to hear soft music, mostly and hip-hop at times, so i want the system to be compatible with my mood..

Whenever I wish , I could hear the songs as per my mind and heart.. hope to get the station on my mobile too..

Also I am a great listener of news and working in the General Liability field, so would love to have news about general liability!!

best of luck for the quick success of station.

Pandora rocks..

Posted by: In4trac at March 27, 2010 5:38 AM

Again with the Symbian question: is there any chance for that to happen? I would really love that. Pandora rocks!

Posted by: Stargate Gamer at March 27, 2010 10:08 AM

. . . im just throwin this out there. . . but i would like to see a pandora "community". In a sense how rotten tomatoes is for movies, and myspace is for the social experience. I think that pandora can be the community for music, thusly (in my opinion) furthering the music genome project. In the way that music is for the people, made by the people, and ultimately controled by the people.

all im sayin'

Posted by: toast ninja at March 27, 2010 2:04 PM

It seems like there are some people who want Pandora to consider cultural factors for music selection. I (and most users) completely disagree. Keep basing decisions on your analysis of song structures and the current 400+ qualities. Though there is a place for cultural traits on other radio stations, Pandora is PERFECT for doing it the way you do. Keep it up.

So far, I'm very impressed by the variety music that I can choose to listen. I love very old country, you might say, Traditional, but the variety of old country was great. Looking forward to listening to more musice when I am online.

Make an XBox 360 app and I'll subscribe forever! C'mon, Netflix did it, jump on the bandwagon!!! :D

Posted by: Shay at March 30, 2010 1:34 PM

LOL, like Mike mentioned in an earliers post I also only realised Pandora was not just available via my iPhone but over the web too! doh!
Advertise this fact over Pandora!

I was turned on to Pandora by a friend of mine, and now it's my only Internet radio station.
This is a great site. I really love all the music on here.

I love the variety I can choose from, just recently found the site but will be frequenting from now on, I wonder if there is an andriod app for my g1.... gonna check, thanks again!

I just want to add my support for the ability to control the stations by attributes! I LOVE that on Pandora I can create a station based on the sounds I like--as opposed to being locked into genres or someone else's definition of what a music type is.

Every event held pandora attracting more attention, thank you for this event

Its true that every event held by pandora attracts more people and more attention. That shows the most relevant event pandora has.

A lot of good tunes on the program. Four of my cousins in Freemont, California are in some bands that sounded good on You Tube. I sampled 24 of their songs from six of their albums.

I really thank you for your service!

Posted by: Knights Of Columbus at April 15, 2010 7:35 PM

I would like to the following options:
o no vocals, instrumental only
o primary instrument: piano, sax, etc.
o male only, or female only vocals

There seems to be a continual effort on the program's part to introduce more and more variety, even after defining lots of likes and dislikes. This detracts from the main stated feature--that is to play music I "like".

Thanks for listening!

Posted by: RickA at April 18, 2010 6:55 PM

Pandora is just awesome. I was looking for some new 90's punk to add to my collection and I got Lagwagon and MXPX. 2 bands I always had heard of but don't get any radio play here on the east coast.

The service is incredible.

Hello. Thanks for a great idea!
While listening to some of my stations, I noticed that sometimes the full lyrics to songs were available, and not at other times.
Can you tell me why, and if you'd consider a way to make it possible to always get the full lyrics no matter what song is playing on any of my stations? What a great thing to be able to see the lyrics to many of the songs I'd been wondering about (and loved anyway!).
Just thinkin'.......
Thanks.

What about a way to share my favorite stations on my Facebook page? No way to do this other than send a link to myself (which I'll try)...but quite a round about way of doing something that should be one-click.

I am obsessed with Pandora! First time I heard it was in the Verizon store when I bought my Droid phone. The music was so good, it was distracting me. Pandora was my first AP I downloaded! I too didn't know it was available on the computer until a few weeks later (my kids told me). Now, I listen in the car via my phone (that's how I discovered I could make calls too - by accident listening to Pandora!) instead of the radio, my iPod and even satellite radio! I'm thinking I might get rid of the XM because the variety is much better here (never heard the same song twice in a day) and the portable device is too expensive. I also listen at home on my computer ALL day since I work from home. I even fall asleep to a calm meditation station that makes me sleep deeper because of the delta tones. I just wish I could listen to it when I'm off-line when I'm on an airplane. I don't skip too many songs because there are things I've never even heard before! Love being the DJ in a sense. I could NEVER EVER buy all the music I hear on Pandora! Next I'll learn how to "share" stations.

OK, done with the devotionals (I know...Creepy huh? Too much???);-) Now for the questions

Are town halls for everyday people or just "industry" people and will there be any town hall mtgs. in Dallas, TX? How do we find out about them/get invited? Are the stations intuitive, meaning when you thumbs up a song, does the station automatically add more songs that sound like that and do they avoid songs you thumb down? Love the mood suggestions!! Do it! Would also like to see it on Wii, like the XBOX comment - just got my Netflix CD for Wii yesterday. Lastly, I'd support some creative way to hear local ads for concerts, events, etc.; that's the only thing I miss from the radio - what's going on in my town, but not too much because the music is what keeps me a Pandora groupie!

Thanks!!
Chevelle

I like the more hard to find groups that are in the world. I've noticed that Pandora only has one song by Sweetbox. Personally I would like to see more Sweetbox in Pandora. Thank you very much for all the work you've put into this project.

Posted by: Robert G Cook at November 12, 2010 8:16 AM

I see that you support Pandora use on certain Sony devices. What about PlayStation systems? I am in the market for one of their game systems, but I am interested to know whether Pandora can stream through PS3 or higher, since it is equipped with Blu-ray. If not, is that something you could make happen?

Next time you're in Washington, it would be sweet if you could come East of the Cascades and visit Spokane. With a large collegiate and tech-oriented community, and a diverse underground music scene, it would be a great addition to your journey.

Thanks!
Glenda
