NYC Town Hall - March 22, 2010
Man, what a night in NYC. Almost 400 people jammed into the New World Stage theater for a lively conversation.
Tons of great comments and feedback. There was definitely a lot of interest in the advertising side of our business - I guess that's not surprising in NY - how we thought about it both from an economic standpoint, an advertiser standpoint, and a user standpoint. Lots of folks are interested in the ability to target ads over time -both to make them more relevant, and more valuable.
Pandora has over 80 people working just on that part of our business. It's really key for us to optimize that in order to keep up with the incredible growth - which just keeps going and going... just crossed 50 million registered listeners!!!
Also spent a good while talking with folks afterwards about various new projects. One thing is clear, there are many entrepreneurs entering the music space now... particularly in the area of artist services. Trying to crack the nut on how to help artists make the web work for them.
There continues to be a great response to our plans (and they are still in the 'plan' stage) to bring some more targeted artist info to listeners (eg. local concerts).
Thanks again to all who braved the rain to make it out...

Comments
Tim,
I'm sure it doesn't come as a surprise how much of a fan I am. I have a great deal of advertising background and would love to know about other opportunities to hear compelling debate regarding the digital space, specifically relating to Pandora.
Thanks

I couldn't figure out how or if I could e-mail you so I will say it here. I wanted to listen to "Saturday Morning Cartoons Greatest Hits" but you didn't have anything except Spiderman by the Ramones. This would be awesome to have this music available. Hope it helps and that others also want to hear it too. Its fun music.
Thank You

You should definitely make it accesible for listeners to access their favorite radio stations if that can be done.

I just downloaded Pandora onto my iPod Touch yesterday, and I've been listening to it all day today. Very cool application. The music sounds wonderful. I think the playlists that your program creates - music genome project? - are better than Apple's Genius program. I'm a fan. Thanks so much.

Hi Tim,
Don't know if there has already been a THM Los Angeles but figured I could add some ideas here...
I've not yet made the switch to Pandora One Desktop but I believe it could become both a wildly popular and socially interactive platform - essentially taking on a life of it's own. (ie Facebook, Wikipedia)
These are my thoughts for the Pandora One Desktop:
Community Live Tab:
WikiTab - Link(s) to a Wikimedia page(s) where the Pandora community could contribute lyrics, community glossary of terms, reviews, artist info, and events. I believe this will generate an incredible surge in community ownership/involvement, and by tying into Wiki's existing public repository, where much of the above information currently exists, it would save Pandora outside vendor costs (eg lyric providers) and simple data storage/replication.
Member Assigned Attributes - This would be a tab that would show a community weighted top-down list of linked attributes and would be housed/updated in the WikiMedia data repository. The contributor would add their attributes to individual songs from the WikiMedia page and would become a useful search tool for like attributed songs. For the Pandora music experts it could act as a living document to aid in their back-end categorization process.
Granular Controls:
Length of Time - Allowing the individual to set a station with Max-Song-Length would provide the capability to use Pandora for social dances where they may have the correct genre but can't stay on the floor for 9-10 minutes in the case of some swing/jazz songs.
Randomization Mixer Controls:
- Randomize giving control to the community member's station of a greater/lesser mix between new tunes they've never heard and those they've already rated.
- Randomize giving control to the community member of a greater/lesser mix between songs they've rated and a friend(s) ratings with respect to the same songs within that station/genre.
Sorry this was intended to be a quick note but turned into another night of OCD outta control... ;)
BTW I love Pandora... Thanks for the music!

Maybe you could incorporate advertising based on things that are more relevant to the users current station. That way I don't have to hear John Mayer ads every 6 songs when I would obviously never (ever) go to a concert of his.

I don’t usually comment or write in threads. I am this time because I have signed up for Pandora today and after making 5 personal radio stations from blues to jazz to classical to Jeff beck I am totally impressed. What you have done is what I have wanted to do for years. That is play music of a certain type that I want to listen to at the time I want to listen to it. I can’t even do this to the level you do with my own music collection. Your approach to music and how it sounds and feels is not new. Each music owner has taken long hours to setup playlists for parties, private listening, or long drives. What a pain that has been at times. Then there is always the, “I wish I had such and such a song because it would be perfect for my collection.” Now if I hear a song I want I can buy it or the album. Thank you for your work and bringing a team together that has actually created something that really is worth using.

My apologies! I stand corrected. I checked FourPlay's website, and Lee Ritenour is indeed also a member! I should have known this, as it's an awesome force with which to be reckoned!
Again, thanks for your contributions to featuring musical genius.

This is fantastic. Now I can enjoy more listening to my classical music. It is so convenient no more hassle looking on my CD collection. It's just here on line and I can listen wherever I get connection. Thank you very much for creating this. Pandora is awesome.

To Whom It May Concern:
I have never seen a station that isa geared totally ro and by the listener. This is great, I will use it often to hear the music I want to at that time.
Which brings me ot the heart of this comment, I have enjoyed "The Righteous Bros." since the '60's and have them asa a station, what diappoints though, is that this mornin' I needed to hear some Blue Eyed Soul, so I came to Pandora, and put their station on. And for way over an hour....I heard everthing but "The Righteous Bros., I feel that if someone picks a certain artist as their channel, then they want to hear more of the chosen artist, than anyone else.
This isa the first time for me, doing something like this, so I just might be in the wrong place, who knowsa maybe this will get to the right people, I hope!!

Questions for Pandora
You advertise 192kbps for the premium subscription. What is the kbps rate for the free service? In other words, I would like to compare the difference between the two.
Second question: Are these kbps sound quality streams the same or different for web based computer streaming, and Blackberry streaming?
Thanks.

Pandora, you guys have one of the most incredible things going that has changed music listening in such a great way. I'm not surprised at all the great feedback you've received in NYC, it's very much deserved and necessary. Keep up the good work.

I've been a user of Pandora for some time now, but the whole time I have had one major problem. That is the select few Windows Mobile phones that you allow your software to work on. I used to have the AT&T Tilt, and now I have the Tilt2, both of which have plenty of speed and power to handle the program. Especially based on the WinMo phones you have listed. I've tried to download the program but it always says my phones aren't recognized. The programs should run on other WinMo phones, or so I assume.
Is there anyway I can get a copy of the WinMo software to see if it will run on my Tilt2?
Thanks

I'm frustrated and saddened. I listen to Pandora for hours a day. Today I needed/wanted to just listen to the Andrew Lloyd Webber Medley Radio I found posted by you guys. I knew family would appreciate it to so posted to Facebook.
After and hour and a half, I have just NOW heard two songs of his. Usually, all that plays is Les Miseralbe (sp?) and Phantom. He has done so much more.
Anyway to make this truly HIS station, (same is true with other artists) without hours of songs NOT theirs? Would really appreciate that!

How much does it cost to listen to pandora
Posted by: jerri anderson at May 2, 2010 6:04 PM
Maybe I am missing the point of your service. I select an artist and what I get is one or two songs not the album. Along with that I get other artist playing his tunes and lastly artist that have nothing to do with his tunes. Case in point, Miles Davis' album of "Kind of Blue" which you played one cut on the day I signed up. Yesterday I clicked on my preset and got 3 albums of which did not contain anything played by Miles. Is your service a place where I can select what I want to hear or a place where you push albums you want me to buy dispite what I choose? By the way, what's up with the captchas? this is the second time I have composed this letter. Your captcha was not correct and it kick me out and erased my letter. If you do not want our comments just say so.

Please HELP anyone! How is Pandora supposed to work? I am trying to use it on my bluray player. I created my stations on the computer. They showed up on tv. But, I'm not able to put songs in those stations & have them remain there- can't figure out if I'm doing something wrong or if I just don't understand how Pandora works. If it does do this - I'm very interested in Pandora One. Thank you!

Hey guys: Great website. Great listening. Would you all consider adding some more options/variety of what type of music/stations we would like to have: Brass, Horn, Percussion, Woodwind, Strings, or Combination. Thanks for your consideration. Dave
Posted by: Dave at May 10, 2010 6:26 PM
by far, pandora is great and love hearing stuff never experienced! HOWEVER, there's one nagging problem that's plagued all formats (fm, satellite, etc) and that's repetition of artists/songs. i would like your code writers work on the selection logic that either limits play or have an app for the customer to control it. it's self defeating to have such a tremendous musical resource wasted on "the same old songs" dogma. oh, one more suggestion, have "don't show this again" tab when rating song. we get the picture, okay?
Posted by: Phil Lejeune, Needles, Ca at May 11, 2010 9:08 AM
I love what you have but there is very little variety. Each day on all 30 channels I get the same songs that I have already checked that I like. Any chance of a little more variety?

If it is possible, I would really appreciate a volume control in the application available on the Android. In the near future I will be listening to a lot of very boring lectures on my Verizon Wireless Ally, and it would be nice to have Pandora in the background at a lower volume that will enable me to still hear the lecture.
Thank you for this service! I really enjoy it.
Posted by: Brandon at May 28, 2010 4:54 PM
PLEASE GET THE REPETITION AND MIX SOME SERIOUS ATTENTION! I don't want to see Pandora go the easy way and become just another music station as did all the formats before you.
I'm a self-employed glassblower and listen 12-14 hour/day, so consider me your service barometer. The less you hear, the better you're doing on programming.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. DON'T TURN COMMERCIAL ON US AND START TWEEKING SOME GENES!

Re: tom's New York comments:
Wow, don't know what y'all are smoking...Pandora was fine with the visual ads, but the audio ones are innane, vapid and insulting to us listeners...cut the number by 70% or you will contiue to annoy and ultimately lose us listeners.

I'd like to see Pandora use your Genome skills with advertising. I don't mind advertising - some is downright great - I just don't like advertising I don't like. :) So give us a thumbs up or down ability on ads. For instance, I like performance gear, travel, sustainability efforts, wellness, and health. I can't STAND ads for prescription medicine for depression or various physical symptoms. I will never buy products from these companies. They waste their money spending ads on me and I turn off/mute/walk away when such ads come on, thus a complete waste for all. Now, give me a Patagonia ad and I'll listen. Talk to me about solutions for water problems in Haiti, hybrid vehicles, wind energy, etc. In this way, you'd be bringing a great service, even a marketable one, to both your listeners and the companies buying advertising on your site. Win-win for all.
