Children's Music on Pandora

We're proud to announce that we've officially added a new genre to Pandora: Children's Music!

We've hunted down some truly excellent children's music for our collection, and our Music Analysts have spent months listening to every one of these songs. They've categorized the songs along hundreds of musicological traits so playlists are kid-friendly, musically interesting, and combine a great mix of familiar songs and fun new discoveries.

With Pandora's built-in variety, never again will you have to listen to the same CD on repeat for weeks at a time. Anyone who's under the impression that most children's music is cheesy or that there isn't much out there, is in for a treat.

Brady_Thumbs_UP.JPG

Steve Hogan, our Music Operations Manager and co-curator of the stations below, has been listening to these stations with his 4-year-old son Brady. He hands the iPhone over to thumb-happy Brady, who has become quite enthusiastic about crafting his personal radio station. Sometimes he thumbs downs a song after only a few notes, but he's always decisive. :) At left, he's giving a thumbs up to a Raffi song.

If your child has a favorite children's artist, start a station from that artist's name. Or, read on to try some of the kid-tested stations Steve and I made for you.

Radio for Kids --- Meant for kids 7 and under, this station is fun, educational, and not too baby-ish. For kids who are moving on up from Toddler Radio. Many musical genres are included here, and due to the variety and quality of songs, it's enjoyable for kids and adults!

Rockin' Kids Radio --- Meant for kids 7 and under. This one is my personal favorite; an energetic station good for dancing, room-cleaning and high-energy play. This station is a winner for kids (and adults!) who love upbeat music. Rock out, kiddos.

Toddler Radio --- Meant for kids 4 and under, this station is educational and fun! A variety of toddler-friendly themes and music genres are explored. Look for Sesame Street, Disney, & The Wiggles among others. :)

forthekids.jpg

Sleepy Time --- Meant for kids 5 and under, this station is designed to prepare your tyke for a nap or bedtime (or any time you want to bring the energy level down a notch). It's full of mellow sounds and sweet lullabies.

Kid's Folk Music --- Meant for kids 7 and under, this station features quality kid-friendly folk music. It's a pretty mellow station... a nice quiet-time alternative to Rockin' Kids.

Tween Radio --- Meant for ages 8 to adult. This station is appropriate for those too old for children's music but a bit too young for rock 'n' roll's more adult themes. It includes pop music like Miley Cyrus, the High School Musical cast, The Jonas Brothers, and the cast of Glee.

Personally, I'm thrilled we've been able to fulfill this frequent listener request.
And for "aunties" like me, it's very handy to have all this children's music right at my fingertips.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the new stations. My kids will love it.

Myself, I'm working on a station of IDM and mellow electronica for my kids. Boards of Canada, Trentmoeller, Ulrich Schnauss and even a little Plaid, Aphex Twin & David Kristian.

I have three small children, and have luck putting them to sleep with many of these songs on a long car ride (And it keeps me alert and awake), or a slow dance while rocking my children to sleep.

I call it "IDM songs for your sleepyheaded children'. Check it out---

I'm trying really hard to stay with soft songs, mellow beats. The Music Genome Project doesn't always categorize these songs the way I'd like, so it's a bit of a challenge.

I have been a user for the past 6 months thru my iphone. I recently got my 7 yr old daugter an itouch and she loves to use Pandora. It would be nice if there was a way to restrict songs for her that would be age appropriate. Is it possible to get this added to the mobile app or as a feature to her account? I know managed filters are somewhat a risky endeavor, but at least this could filter out profanity and more "adult" topics that are in so many songs.

That station is amazing! I'm totally impressed. Do you mind if I share it with others?
(On twitter, for instance? http://twitter.com/pandora_radio )

What a great idea, and such a nice compromise for kids / adults.

Yup, you can turn our explicit lyrics filter on (or off) any time, on any account.
On the web, after signing in at www.pandora.com, click on 'account' at the top right of the page. On the slide that opens, look for "Allow explicit content" at right, and click on 'edit' to change to 'yes' or 'no.'

I've gone through more than a few attempts to make stations for my two daughters. I'll give these a spin while I continue to refine "Daughter music" (http://www.pandora.com/stations/8851347f260c17b8693375fa03ae714267dcb5f5c19f6840).

Thanks for these!~

I actually know a friend who owns some online radio stations! He's pretty good with web stuff, we could actually be a pretty kick-ass team. Nice music!

This is excellent! I didn't even think to look on Pandora for music for my kid.

I absolutely love Pandora! It's like someone gave me a subscription to satellite radio, or a zillion CDs all categorized the way I want them. Thank you so much!!!

Posted by: annie at February 7, 2010 8:27 AM

Pandora plays children's music as well, including the beloved Laurie Berkner, Justin Roberts, and more. What a great way to find new tunes for the classroom or music therapy.

Posted by: dsi r4 at February 8, 2010 3:11 AM

That is very impressive.

Posted by: wik at February 8, 2010 8:23 AM

I have just discovered Pandora and think it's great BUT how about a category for clean hip hop for kids. I have been an XM subscriber for years but have had to block all their hip hop stations because they are explicit. Hip hop is the music of urban kids and there is a great need (and a market) for filters for age appropriate material.

I am listening to the Tween station for the first time right now. Hoping it gets better because so far it all slow and pretty dull.

Posted by: SusanMoir at February 8, 2010 12:11 PM

That Pandora is very interesting that was helpful to many kids. Many will love to attempt to play that Pandora. Since I'd have my nephew i will share it with him and i know he will like it better. There's no need to request coming from the station its Pandora now is best solution we that we need.It also the easiest way to play around again and again.

Posted by: lexie alexander at February 11, 2010 4:41 PM

This is great news! I've been enjoying Pandora myself, and now my little one can get his tune on as well. I have to agree with the comment about clean hip-hop or urban channel. The kids love those beats, but so much of the lyrics are negative. I'm not a prude, it's more the way some of the words glamorize violence while demeaning women. And I do NOT need my little one hearing the n-word.

But seriously agreed, this is awesome. Thanks!

Posted by: Robert Goldstein at February 12, 2010 8:46 PM

Thanks so much, these are fantastic! I'm really glad this has been launched. I think Toddler Radio is going to be popular in our house... the kids can't get enough of the Wiggles :)

Posted by: Wiggles fan at February 13, 2010 1:38 AM

My daughter-in-law introduced me to Pandora. The best thing that's come my way for a long time. It's better than Itunes and my Ipod, and I have gotten so much use out of it. Plus, I'm learning all sorts of new artists that fit in with my preferred music. Thanks so much for all you do.

Posted by: Judy at February 13, 2010 11:42 AM

I love that Pandora has expanded it's collection to include music for children...but is there any way to keep the Kidz Bop versions from coming up in other stations? Just because it's a good song does not mean an adult I wants to hear that version.

Posted by: Stephanie at February 13, 2010 4:25 PM

I don’t mind the advertisements, but the anti discrimination against Christians at state universities have to stop! It is me or them, one of us can’t stay on Pandora! I hope its them.

This may be just the excused I needed to get my first iTouch. Now I can surf over to Pandora at bedtime and play sleep music for our babies.

Thanks!

I found Pendora when I was complaining about DIRECT TV going with SONIC and not XM/Sirius. I lost my channels. This is awesome and will brag you up on my blog tomorrow (2/17/10).

One thing - I listened to DEEP TRACKS on sirius - anything thing like that. You guys have me pumped!!!! TY.

This is the BEST website! I just love the adventure of finding new musicians or groups that aren't saturating our airwaves. It's difficult listening to radio stations playing the same old music and all the disc jocky banter. So PANDORA is such a gem!

I've shared Pandora with friends and family and will continue to do so as long as they keep the format as it is which is simple, easily accessible, no to low cost and continue to expand my "stations" with newly discovered music like Sleepthief and more.

Many, many thanks!

Posted by: sillygirl7 at February 18, 2010 5:18 PM

This is entirely unrelated (of course). I can't find the feedback section.

PLEASE increase the efficiency of recognition of the fact that I hate live music. I've skipped every single one and they still occur. They should appear as a 'block this type of music' option, just like bands that are skipped 3 times in a row. Please please please. Please!

Posted by: Anika at February 19, 2010 6:17 AM

I love the service and will likely upgrade my account. Is there an appropriate place to post artists that we would like to see on the service ? I am not sure if this is right place but here it goes: I am looking for Jacqui Hunt, and the CD is called Auraphonic. It is down tempo stuff. Very Nice actually. Anyway thanks for listening to me. If this was not the appropriate place please let me know. -Thanks , Bob Hamme

Posted by: jeff at February 21, 2010 10:51 AM

Pandora is so great for every age, my son loves music as much as I do. I truly wish I could get Pandora in the car the way xm or sirius works. I wonder if there is anything like this in the works? I'd buy it for sure!!

Posted by: Heidi at February 21, 2010 8:22 PM

This may not be the place to send this, but I can't find a suggestions page, so, with apologies for inappropriate placement, I would like to make a suggestion.

It would make me (and, I assume, a lot of other fans) very happy if there was a way to restrict a station to songs in a particular language. I keep trying to listen to stations seeded on Japanese bands, but I end up with most of the music being in English, which I then have to thumb down. I've had similar trouble with German music, though I listen to that less often. Perhaps it's a problem of there not being enough non-English bands on Pandora? But I'd honestly rather have a repetitive selection in the language I want to listen to, instead of constant intrusions by other languages.

Thank you for your attention to this concern,
tealeavesgreen

I am only a recent subscriber to Pandora but am thoroughly impressed. I am a music lover and would love to find out if there are any employment positions that could utilize my talents and interests. I have a degree in Public Relations. Is there such a place to find out?

Posted by: Tom D at February 22, 2010 5:31 AM

I'm new to Pandora. I don't see a button telling the system I DON'T want to hear certain songs or artists. Is there a provision for that?

Posted by: Vinnie at February 22, 2010 11:25 AM

How do i get my own music on pandora radio? do i have to go threw a copyright system or anything?

Posted by: Eric at February 22, 2010 2:49 PM

That's a great life-saving genre that only can be realised to its fully strength by working parents who have to struggle with their little monsters like me :) Thank you very much.

Thank you for the kids stations! I'm thrilled to have this option and plan to add some of them to my stations list! Great job!

Posted by: Teri at February 23, 2010 5:25 AM

@Eric -- Please check this page on our FAQ for information on our submissions process: http://blog.pandora.com/faq/contents/31.html

@Vinnie -- If you click the "thumbs down" button while a song is playing, that song will never play again on the station that is currently playing.

@Tom D -- Feel free to check http://blog.pandora.com/jobs/ for current openings.

Posted by: Ryan, Pandora Support at February 23, 2010 11:35 AM

Are you going to force the kids to listen to live versions of songs too? All because you are too lazy to classify music as live or studio recorded and include an option to shut off live versions. Love your product, but when I email you about the issue, you tell me the solution is to thumbs down my favorite songs and that you will not ever fix this problem.... im left wondering if you even care about your customers. To be honest if you fix it I'll upgrade to Pandora ONE right now. But you wont, cuz its something your customers care about.

Posted by: Jim at February 23, 2010 1:10 PM

where has this been? There is no question music stimulates the young mind and anecdotal evidence is not the only proof...science has tested this too...nice job Pandora

I'm an elementary music teacher. The educational possibilities of these stations for children is mind boggling! Thanks so much!
We just managed to have our firewall lifted to allow streaming audio. I can't wait to build a station for my school kids!

While your adding music people would like if you could add the artist Grieves (he's a rapper) that would be fantastic. He is the only artist I haven't been able to find on Pandora and i would greatly appreciate it.

Yeah! I am so excited. I have a 2 yr old who loves music and dancing. I can't wait to try out some of these new stations with her today. We have 3 cds she loves and have listened to them hundreds of times so this will be so nice to hear something new! THANKS!

Posted by: Gina at March 11, 2010 7:15 AM

A suggestion--add replaygain support!

Honestly, it's a little frustrating when a song will go from a low volume to a high volume, so that I have to adjust the volume frequently. Especially when I'm trying to sleep.

I can't be the only one having this problem... So, please? :)

Posted by: Tristan L at March 12, 2010 11:53 PM

Hi there. Awesome idea about adding children's stations. I listen to Pandora almost exclusively now. Love you guys and gals!

So anyway - I have a comment - it would be really cool if you could add stations without actually going to them. I.E. sometimes I hear a great song, want to add the band to my station list so I can listen to the genre further - but I'm currently happen with the station I've got on.

Currently I can't add a station without going to that station, correct? That would be cool if I could.

XOXO

"The Man with 29 Cats," by Treehouse 10 is available as a free download on www.wigglenation.com (left side link), also currently from the Twitter widget at www.treehouse10.com. A family of 29 cats have the run of the house, the roof and the piano.

The song is from the album Bug in a Puddle. Hippos, monkeys, a thoughtful bug, a best friend frog named Red, a merry-go-round a hot air balloon ride all figure into this. Listen to samples of all their songs at www.treehouse10.com.

Treehouse 10 has been played all over the country and the world.

I just want a button that says NEVER OFFER EXPLICIT LYRICS. NOT EVER. for any age. Meaning ONLY provide the SWEAR-SAFE version. PAID account or not, in fact.

Provide us with that button. Kids' music oferrings are great, but even some adults think rap with swearing is bull**** (do you see what I did there?)

Also, btw, off topic: The ad blurb about signing up for annual Pandora One was explicit in itself that we could skip more songs than 6 per hour. I don't see that being the truth yet. You might want to fix that before I ask my CC for a refund. Like, maybe by tomorrow.

And I will post a screenshot of this, just in case you dont feel like approving it.
