Pandora One gets an upgrade: Desktop App 2.0
I'm pleased to announce that we've released version 2.0 of the Pandora One desktop app. You've been telling us that the desktop app is one of your favorite features of Pandora One and it's great to have the chance to begin the process of refining that experience.
With this release we've tried to keep the interface very simple while adding several of the most-requested features:
* You can now view your song history. Just click on the album art to reveal arrows to navigate through the last hour of your playlist. Thumb up (or down) or buy any song that played in the last hour.
* We've added a progress bar. Want to know how much is left to play of the current track? Just click the album art to reveal the time elapsed and remaining for the current track.
* Windows users can hover over the system tray icon to see the name of the currently playing artist and song.
* The app remembers where you placed it on your desktop and how loud you like your music. The next time you start it, it's right where you left it.
* Song transitions have been sped up so you don't need to wait long for a thumbs down to get rid of the current song.
Our goal is to continue to improve Pandora One over time. Hope you enjoy this first little step in that evolution.

Excellent, love the new features. This is a great little app. Look forward to more in the future. :)

This is excellent; the desktop app is now exactly as I hoped it would be when I first signed up for Pandora One (which was right when it came out, because all of the features were just too good to pass up). Thank you guys for listening carefully to the numerous feature requests and for always striving to improve our Pandora experience! Keep up the great work.

Great updates. But still cannot use the media keys on my keyboard? Even the web app let me do that. What gives?
Posted by: Keith Mueller at September 1, 2009 10:28 PM
Great modifications! I love the song progress bar! And reviewing previous tracks, I tend to forget to rate songs.

Folks-
FOLKS!!!
I run up on this just now: been looking for something like this for many a long decade of years. I am grateful. I despise commercial radio with a strangely heart-felt passion. I like National Socialist Radio (er = NPR) but they ain't enuff songs and not near always to my taste.
You have my highest compliments, regards, obeisance and shit-eating grin big and wide. Keep on. Like what I just read about improved desktop. NOW i will get back home from offshore & whomp down jack to upgrade my ratty whore =OOPS= WHOLE house music system to permeate my entire space, the air we breathe the electromagnosphere & the scarily thin gas blanket under which we dwell with music that resonates in what I call my soul (tho' I unbelievalator), my little green world is a better place for the work you have done. May you find happiness thoroughly and to the fullest. Hats off, I salute you. My wife salutes you 2.
I remain,

Awesome additions! I didn't realize what the change included when it downloaded, now that i see the changes i'm really glad to have them!
Only thing i'm still curious about... call it a Feature Request for V3. Any plans to allow adding new artists/songs to a station from the Desktop App? I used it a lot on the web app, and can't use it now that i'm on the Desktop App.
Minor request, great changes! Thanks for adding the functionality!
Posted by: Matt at September 2, 2009 02:30 AM
$36 is more than I want to pay for radio, and putting a $0.99 charge on my credit card every month is a PITA. Why isn't there a $12/year option that offers unlimited listening with ads?
Posted by: mjfrombuffalo at September 2, 2009 03:46 AM
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I love all of the improvements in 2.0!
A few more to consider:
1. The ability to delete stations and rename stations, currently you have to go to the website to do these things.
2. A toolbar style interface option that can be docked to the bottom, side, or top of the screen. Would need song title, artist, album, progress bar, station, and buttons for all the features offered in Pandora One.
3. A suggested artists tool like that of the one in the website version.
Thanks again for improving upon a program that was already above and beyond the quality of any broadcast radio available anywhere in the world!

Love the update! It was quick simple and painless! Progress bar is a very nice feature! It just keeps getting better and better. New updates are exactly were you would expect them to be. Nice job guys!!!
Posted by: Joshua Fechter at September 2, 2009 05:22 AM
appreciate the update, especially the progress bar and the app remembering where i put it. but you know what would be awesome? an android app.
Posted by: Terry at September 2, 2009 05:27 AM
I love the new improvements! I use Pandora One on my mac and the elapsed time & playlist history were two of my biggest complaints when I started using the app - now you've fixed them, thanks!
The only thing that I notice is some songs end up with a thumbs up but I don't remember giving it to them. Maybe this occurs after a certain number of plays? Either way, I'd like to be able to remove a thumbs up or a thumbs down. Some times I click it by accident but my only alternative is to go the opposite direction - I'd rather just go back to neutral :-)
Thanks again!

Thanks for Pandora and for this app...

Fantastic job guys! Those are the best features you could have focused on for the first update. I was VERY pleasantly surprised this morning!
Keep up the great work!
Posted by: Justin at September 2, 2009 07:00 AM
Great news! If I might be so bold... another enhancement for Win users that would be MUCH appreciated would to hide it from the taskbar when minimized (and just leave the system tray icon).
Posted by: Mark at September 2, 2009 07:11 AM
I think that it is great that Pandora is so good at listing to its user's feedback and implementing requested changes. I the progress bar and song history were defiantly needed.
Yesterday and today when I tried to launch my PandoraOne app (the old version) at work I did not get any connection. Today I checked the blog and noticed the update. Once I installed the update it restored my connection.
It would be nice if the app would give you a notification when an update is available so that we do not have to go to the Pandora Website to check periodically (because like any program I'm sure there will be future updates).
I'm not sure if the lost connection was actually due to the update or not (my work is some how blocking streaming from the website while I have access through the PandoraOne app). If they cut that off then I will just use the PalmPre (which also has a great app).
Posted by: David at September 2, 2009 07:26 AM
I've tried twice and v2 does not have these features when I install.
What gives?
Posted by: Korey at September 2, 2009 07:31 AM
Great update!
One thing I'd like added to the app is an "add variety" button. I virtually never use the website anymore, but if I want to add something to station I still need to open the website.
Posted by: jason at September 2, 2009 07:34 AM
These are exactly the changes I was wanting to be made, I had just never gotten around to suggesting them. You're mind readers. Keep up the good work.
Posted by: Tim at September 2, 2009 07:44 AM
I love the desktop client, and I like many of the additions made here, but can anyone explain why the popup song titles now fade in and out so slowly?
It's a small gripe, but it's incredibly annoying to have that little window around for even longer than it used to linger when I'm trying to get work accomplished. It has a pesky habit of obstructing things I'd like to be clicking on right when I'd like to be clicking on them.
The old speed was occasionally annoying, but fine. The new speed is far too slow. Please change it back.
As always, thanks for the great work, everyone! You make my workday much more enjoyable.
Posted by: Vic at September 2, 2009 07:46 AM
The changes are great! My only issue with Pandora One was accidentally thumbs-downing a song and having to go to the edit page to fix it, and the song history helps fix that (among just being generally handy).
Thanks for the music!
Posted by: Erik at September 2, 2009 07:56 AM
Will my current version auto-update? There is no 'Help > About' in this app so I have no way to know what version I'm running (a minor gripe btw).
Posted by: Brad at September 2, 2009 08:33 AM
Ok nevermind - the version is in preferences. Cool.
Mine didn't auto-update when I re-launched it so I'll update it manually. Thanks for the update!
Now, get those devs busy with android!

I liked that app when it was for everyone to use
but now only pay memebrs get it, thats bs
y not have 2 air apps one for pay members & one for free memebers & for the free members air app will have ads on it.
i use the old air app for the fact that i hate running pandora in a browser for the fact that
pandora in a browser eats up way more CPU & Ram
but in the air app it does not do that.
yes i use the old air that you guys Fed up
so every time i hit a button it trys to open a pandora.com page. i ended up blocking pandora.com in my browser so i can keep useing the old free air app.
Posted by: E-TARD at September 2, 2009 08:55 AM
Exactly what I've been thinking the app really needed. Great job, and thanks a bunch!
Posted by: Pandora Fan at September 2, 2009 09:01 AM
The song history feature doesn't work for me. When I click on the album art I see the progress bar, but I do not see any navigation arrows.
Posted by: John Cradock at September 2, 2009 09:34 AM
Awesome - I tweeted you guys when I first got P1 and all the things I was hoping for have been included in this release!
Posted by: Sean at September 2, 2009 10:29 AM
The UI for the song history and progress bar is sweet! Well done!
In the next version, I hope you'll add the ability to modify a station (at least add new music) within the player.

I subscribed to Pandora One yesterday. The above is no help to me.
I prefer the web interface to any desktop application, you see.
What would actually help me: improve the BlackBerry app, specifically increasing the amount of caching to at least 3 minutes. Currently I mostly use it in my car (at home I have computers around) and whenever I cross a cell boundary, there's an incredibly irritating stutter that can last for an entire song.
Posted by: Carl at September 2, 2009 12:32 PM
Awesome guys...
One of the suggestions I gave Mike back in May has come to pass in V2, (minimize button).
Keep it coming!
Posted by: JohnH at September 2, 2009 12:55 PM
So I was getting an excellent error from Adobe AIR when trying to install v2 of ONE:
"Sorry, an error has occurred
The application could not be installed. Try installing it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author."
Great work Adobe - very informative. Turns out, you need to have administrator access in order to install the upgrade (something that Adobe should point out in their error). Now you shouldn't be running as admin because you mind Windows "best practices" of course, but you can install the AIR package using the runas command. I used runas to spawn a new CMD shell with my admin credentials, then ran the AIR package - now my Pandora ONE goodness is back. Yay!

When will the higher quality streams be available to Sonos users?
Posted by: Jim Vaughan at September 2, 2009 01:42 PM
I love Pandora, love the desktop app, and I'm glad you're improving it. I'm not thrilled with the upgrade process. It's rather jarring. The app starts up normally, then behaves as if an error occurred and starts throwing up dialogs. It wasn't really even obvious that it was upgrading. Almost felt like a virus had infected Pandora. No way to cancel, no way to use the old app (at least on the Mac). How about a *notification* that an upgrade is available and an *option* to upgrade?
Posted by: Dietrich Schultz at September 2, 2009 02:10 PM
Sweet, now when you going to add in the ability for us to add music to our stations? :P

I don't know about your desk top YET.
But I work at a desk all day and pandora is the greatest thing I have found in a long time.
Thanks so much. ALLEN

These are great improvements and appear to work flawlessly. Thanks for a great application.
One request: as an OSX user I'd love to see the player controls (pause/play, next, etc) show up in one of the application menus. That way I could assign them to keyboard hotkeys and thus control Pandora while working in other apps. This would be hugely useful.

My son told me about your site, and I am thrilled. I am officially a senior citizen (65) and I am learning so much about the various artists. It is also good to review those songs of my younger days. You have a most invigorating site. Thank you.
Posted by: Hanshi at September 3, 2009 10:29 AM
The new features are great! I subscribed to One a few days ago, and was disappointed that there was no progress bar, song review or minimize to tray options but you got them to me less than a week later. Major thanks.
My only (relatively minor) gripe is that there was no notification that the program had upgraded. I came here trying to figure out what happened when the app "crashed". Next time, please give an option to upgrade immediately or on restarting the app, or at least a clear popup indicating that there was an upgrade and what new/changed features are affected.
Thanks!

Such a great discovery from my son in law. I'm not that tech'ee & yet this app is so simple to go about. Thanks so much for this.

Posted by: B3L13V3R at September 4, 2009 08:00 AM
One bug: If you leave the desktop app paused for a long period (like coming back from work and having it paused all day) the song will cut out and give a connection error unlike the web version which does not care how long you have been away
sidenote: Any chance of HQ streaming to mobile devices even if wifi restricted?
Posted by: Mike at September 4, 2009 02:43 PM
I love the new app, and the additional features, I have been wanting them from day one of Pandora One! I agree with the above requests for new features, but I suspect your current level of features in the Pandora One are more geared towards keeping the interface simple. Maybe a way to implement the new features may be to use interface options. A tool bar mode, a simple interface like the one now, and an advanced interface that allows all the station management options available on the website.
Keep up the great work!!
Posted by: James Shattuck at September 4, 2009 03:52 PM
My housemate is trying to create a channel with all female vocalists ... and Pandora keeps offering males.
Isn't the pitch of the singer's voice as important as the rest of the instrumentation? Acoustic versus electric guitar, horns versus strings, soprano versus tenor?
Posted by: Tsu Dho Nimh at September 5, 2009 12:39 PM
Everything is perfect and pretty minimalistic just like I like it. Only thing that would make perfect for me would be the ability to play the music over an alternative playback device in Windows, like say I have my headset as my main audio choice which is connected to my on board audio, it would be great to be able to playback via my sound card over the speakers. Otherwise you made a good desktop app!
Posted by: Brett at September 5, 2009 06:45 PM
Sounds great but, when can I pay with paypal?
I use debit card for real life (school books) and paypal for online life. I don't want to subscribe until I can pay with paypal.

I saw it mentioned by someone else, but I would also like to see the station associated with the current song when I am listening to QuickMix in the desktop app. I hesitate to use the thumbs in this situation because I don't know which station I'm affecting.
Other than this minor complain, the additions to v2.0.0 are great and cover a lot of functionality that was missing in the previous version. Thanks Pandora!.
Posted by: Gregg at September 8, 2009 10:32 AM
The only gripe that I have with Pandora 1.0 as well as the recently released 2.0 is that you cannot edit stations for your quickmix station. until this feature is added, I will be a disappointed user.
Posted by: matt at September 8, 2009 08:30 PM
Great improvement, sounds like to me! Is the price twelve months or calendar year (ending in December)?

I have always loved Pandora and am always telling friends about this amazing station...but now I am being hit in the wallet. I agree with mjfrombuffalo, I do not mind the ads as much when I can listen to my choice radio stations.
Posted by: Christiaan at September 20, 2009 05:54 PM
I have personally owned 78's, 4 tracks, 8 tracks, reel to reel, cassettes, 45's, 33's, CDs, flash drives, tube radios, crystal radios, transistor radios, and satellite radios. I have never experienced something so terrific as the Pandora Radio. Not only have you actually heard of and have the songs I select, your accuracy on the genre is spot on. I just discovered Pandora and I am now a huge cheerleader.

Thanks for this site, I love finding new bands in certain genres. Instead of having to just search "pop punk" on myspace or whatever, I go here and put in my very favorite bands and it finds ones that sound similar. You're awesome.
Posted by: jason at September 22, 2009 07:46 PM
LOVE the app!
I have an idea: sometimes the album cover is incorrect for the song (i.e. Kiss Me by Sixpence none the richer on Sixpence none the richer shows the album art for Natalie Imbruglia's album - white lillies island) . You should make a way for us to be able to submit a different album cover to the song.
Whenever we submit it, other users who view the suggstion could thumb up or thumb down it, and whenever it hits a certain threshold of thumb ups then the album cover is changed. Only one user thumb up per suggestion, that would enforce enough variety to ensure the validity of a suggestion.
Posted by: Stephanie at September 23, 2009 04:56 PM
It's unfortunate that there is not a way to edit the quickmix from the desktop app.
It has become such a part of how I listen to music that I had to uninstall the desktop app and go back to web until I see a resolve.
LOVE PANDORA - keep up the dev work.
Posted by: noel at September 25, 2009 07:31 AM
Good update, except is there any way to make the song popup an option? I would like something that is unobstrusive, especially when I am listening to music and working.
Thanks.

Still waiting for social media integration: Last.fm scrobbling, Twitter, Facebook.
Posted by: Luke at October 8, 2009 07:15 PM
Just started using Pandora (tonight, actually), decided it was great, subscribed, and installed this application. However, I quickly searched around for alternative apps and am now using OpenPandora instead. No hotkey support is a huge disappointment. Not sure how anyone could stand using a standalone media player - one they HAD to pay to access - without having the ability to quickly pause the song without bringing up the window when there are FREE alternatives that do so much more. OpenPandora also scrobbling to Last.fm was simply a bonus, not a requirement of mine.

Add Variety button to the desktop app. Love it, love it, love it.
Posted by: Joel at November 6, 2009 05:44 AM
Excellent product, however it owuld be nice if I could turn off the notifications when the song changes.
This would make it easier to use in a corporate environment and less intrusive -- you can turn off outlook pop-up notifications,a nd I'd like a similar feature.

@Noel
That's a cool idea, we'll definitely keep it in mind for the next version of the Desktop App.
@Luke
Hope you're enjoying our new Facebook and Twitter integration!
@Mike
The popups are optional! Click on the triangle menu, then choose "Preferences". Make sure "Display notifications on song change" is deselected.
