I upgraded the second I saw this. Not even for the features, I'm running Linux and it doesn't look like the desktop app is supported on Linux, I just feel they deserve some of my money based on how often I use their service.
By the way, great video. Thanks!
Kind regards,
Dave

Anyone have ideas for improving sound quality when playing Pandora through a stereo receiver? My sound is muffled and lacks brightness no matter how I set my treble and bass.
Posted by: Brian at June 25, 2009 6:03 AM
I've been enjoying the higher quality of music with Pandora One, and I tried out the desktop app. There are two things that I really miss from the regular horizontal view, though. I miss seeing the last song played and being able to thumb it up or down, and I can't find a way to alter what stations are used in my QuickMix. For now, on OS X, I've been using Pandora Boy, which also works with my Apple Remote. Thanks for all you do. I've discovered (and bought!) a lot of new music because of Pandora.

I'm pretty much sold on Pandora One. However..... will the no-ad and higher quality also carry over to my Blackberry since it's all still on the same account? If not, do you have some kind of a timeline on when this will be included? Also, I typically listen to Pandora at work and at home (three computers total). Does the 'license' allow for having the desktop app on all three? Or is there a limit?

I'll need the backward and forward arrows to traverse the songs that have been played before I'll start using the desktop application. Once that's available, it sounds like a great app.

First of all I just want to say that I love the new desktop app and Pandora One. Having no ads and the higher bitrate are major selling points of Pandora One, but once the app is updated to having all of the same features as the website, it could very well become the best part.
I have no doubt that you are already working on implementing some of the features still missing, so I just want to echo how important some of them are to me. In the desktop app I would still like to be able to see (and provide feedback to) at least one previous song. I want to be able to give a thumbs up/down to a song after I have finished listening to it in the app. Also, I use the "move this song to another station" feature extensively, and it is the one that I miss the most when using the desktop app. If you can implement these two things, the desktop app will be nearly perfect (in my opinion).
Thanks for making a great product and for being a great group of people who have a passion for music and sharing that passion with others.

Bravo!
Just a quick note, I was a long time subscriber with satellite Radio. Recently I just switched over to Pandora|One. Hands down, you are by far more superior to the rest. I went to Vegas last weekend where we hooked you up to a portable Bose system. Needless to say you were the hit at Encore's pool, chillin' over cocktails surrounded by striking people.
Keep up the good work and I shall indeed pass on your name to those who have not yet discovered you...

My only comment is I would for sure sign up for Pandora One if Paypal was offered as a payment method. Anyway to let me know if PayPal is an option to pay for this service? I only saw a a credit card payment option.

Pandora one is pretty awesome. Love the audio quality and I like the look of the desktop app. Couple of quick comments though - the desktop app should really have an option for hotkey and/or media key support. Also, it's a slightly annoying that the player doesn't remember where I last placed it when it opens, so I have to position every time I open it.
But, despite those small suggestions, Pandora One is great, I recommend it to everyone.

love the desktop app - but still room for improvements.
1. it'd be nice to have the volume slider simply built in along the top of the play/pause/thumbs bar - between it and the album art. i adjust the volume fairly often - it would be nice to have it be a one-click affair, rather than a three click affair.
2. i'm on windows (xp at home, windows 7 at work) and one thing i miss is the ability to move the app window to a specific place on my desktop, then hold SHIFT while clicking the 'close' button to force the app to re-open at that spot thereafter. control over my screen real estate is important!
3. echo the request to be able to thumbs up/down already played tracks.
other than those relatively minor desired features, love love love the desktop app, and pandora one. well worth the three bucks a month it works out to. three bucks a month for unlimited music enjoyment - a steal.

great app! I just subscribed. One thing missing that is essential for me is
MOVE TO ANOTHER STATION
I shuffle songs to the appropriate category often, but right now, only have the option to thumb down. I'd love to this this added, as it is important to me.
Thanks, keep up the great work and high quality work!

For the desktop app. Its pretty good as it is. I'd just like to see a "progress bar" in it somewhere. Just so i know where a songs at in time. Its something I think would be cool. Just a thought
Posted by: Dust at June 27, 2009 12:05 AM
@ Dave Schaub: It doesn't appear to be officially supported on linux, but I got it working on Ubuntu (32 bit -- 64 bit poses a much bigger challange) effortlessly -- just install AIR for linux from the .deb, then install pandora from the .air file just like on Windows/Mac. The desktop app is much faster and more responsive than the flash app (at least for me).

I will upgrade inmediately. I heard the new sound quality is fantastic as well as the new features...

I also use Linux and would like to see the Pandora One app ported over.
Thanks

I downloaded the application to my desktop. The high quality audio attracts me more. I appreciate Pandora and I now recommend this to my friends and others.

By default Adobe air is supported on all three major systems (Windows, OSX, Linux) So I am a bit confused as to why Linux support was not stated. Choosing Adobe Air as a platform has it's benefits, as it is technically a glorified mish-mash of Flash, XML, and HTML so leads to quick dev times and low cost. however it opens up some security holes as well, such as being able to rip apart the source more easily than a traditional application. I'd suggest looking into a more secure way of deploying the desktop application, such as using C/C++ with GTK for a cross-platform application.

I agree with Sheldon a progress bar would be helpfull especially with the bigger files.

I love listening to Pandora in my office but sometimes it seems to get "stuck". It might just be my computer so I will look forward to trying out the desktop app.
Posted by: Ogden Chiropractor at June 29, 2009 10:57 PM
There are two things missing from the PandoraOne app.
First is the ability to see the current progress, including how far into/how long is left of the currently playing song. Sometimes a song is playing, and I'm getting bored of it, but if there is only a few seconds left, I don't want to use one of my skips, if it is going to drag on for another 2 minutes, I'll burn it. But there is no way of knowing.
Second, as someone else mentioned, is the ability to see the previously played songs so you can rate them (thumbs up/down) or buy them. There should be a 'history' button that pops up a window of previously played tracks or something.

That is a pretty good apps. I love Pandora but I think there are room for improvements. Can't wait for the next release. Thanks for the great post!

Is there any way to stream Pandora One desktop application feed through Airport Expresses so I can hear Pandora station in remote speakers?
Posted by: Paul at July 2, 2009 9:17 PM
I love the desktop app.
Posted by: Brad at July 4, 2009 11:02 AM
Pandora One desktop app looks exactly like the Palm Pre Pandora application. The Palm Pre is a Linux OS so a porting to Linux should be easy. With the Adobe Air interface, will the app work with Linux?
Check out a pic of the Palm Pre Pandora app at:
http://www.palm.com/us/products/phones/pre/pre-mobile-applications.html
Look familiar?
My guess is that this app is easily portable to every OS.

While you're at it how about a app for android... you're killin me here, id take an ad filled app if it had access to my Pandora stations
Posted by: Johnson at July 5, 2009 7:41 PM
i would actually buy this if i got unlimited skips, no other features required. but as it is, doesn't really seem worth it for me..
Posted by: Ricky at July 7, 2009 10:28 AM
@Chris S - yes, the ad avoidance of Pandora One also carries through to your Blackberry, or to any other device.
@Brian - for higher audio quality, you might want to explore Pandora One's better 192 Kbps streaming audio rate.
@Matt Sweeny - PayPal is not available yet for us, but we are working on it. Soon, we hope.
@Johnson - Android app is in development here at Pandora. We're working hard at it - please stay tuned.
@Everybody else - thanks for the feature suggestions on the Desktop App! We're listening to all of them, and cataloguing them for future updates.

I just downloaded the app and it looks great so far. In addition to some of the comments above, would it be possible to minimize to the system tray near the clock instead of just to the task bar? Many other media players can do this and I've become accustomed to the feature. Thanks!
Posted by: Neil at July 7, 2009 4:25 PM
A couple of things (some have already been voiced):
1. Need ability to move song to different station
2. Need ability to see station history (i.e. what were the last couple of songs to play?)
3. Social Media integration: (1) last.fm scobbling (2) twitter (3) facebook - in that order. Come on guys! It's 2009! This should have been in the initial release.
4. Need ability to add song, artist to station
5. Need ability to edit station details from app

From a Linux user: I too paid my 36 dollars.
Since I have both Android and Linux desktop, I *was* feeling left out.
But! The requirements are misleading. The One desktop app runs inside any platform that supports Adobe Air virtual machine -- and this includes the three most common Linuxes (and perhaps all).
So, do not fret, Linux users. Pandora, please update your requirements page to say "any platform that supports Air (Windows, Mac, and most all Linux)". Thanks.

Anybody know if I upgrade to Pandora One will I be able to get 192 kbps access on my Palm Pre app?
Posted by: Tom at July 8, 2009 6:34 AM
HI
I LOVE THIS DESKTOP APP. VERY MUCH.
THANKS
PLEASE UPDATE NEW FEATURES.
Posted by: sebastian at July 9, 2009 11:41 AM
I wish you didn't have to pay for a year subscription to test the app. I was looking for a replacement for my media player, but version 1.0.0 fails. I should have paid attention to the list of feature: larger album art. For what this is, Dorame is much better: http://dorame.zduo.net/
What I would like:
"Always on top" option. Minimize to system tray. No notification when the app is in focus. Liquid layout. Mode with just the album cover when I'm not interacting with it (Pretty mode). Mode with just controls for song. You guys to fire your designers, and get new ones.
Posted by: Sean at July 12, 2009 3:46 AM
Nice one, thanks for the article. the new app looks great
Posted by: Hoodia at July 13, 2009 7:55 AM
I love the new desktop app for Pandora One. I connect one of our laptops to our media center and play music throughout the house as well as listen at work.
As previously mentioned, I would also like to have a history so that I can thumb u or thumb down the music that I have just heard. There are times when I am not able to rate them while they are playing.
I would also like to see an "always on top" option.
Thank you.
Posted by: Cyn at July 14, 2009 11:03 AM
I'm with Luke on this one. The Pandora app is seriously missing things like scrobbling, even a simple progress bar to tell how far you are through a song.
Posted by: Louis Castrogivanni at July 16, 2009 7:06 PM
Thanks Pandora, for the awesome service!
Posted by: PJ at July 17, 2009 3:40 AM
Thanks for the suggestions, guys. We're always open to hearing what you want to see.
This is merely v1.0.0 of the desktop app, so many improvements are on the way and in progress. Stay tuned...

I love having Pandora on to eliminate the background noise at work. I don't mind the ads, but I DO mind when they are a) louder than the music, and b) stereophonic so that they assault my ears alternatively. This is NOT cool. at all. :(
Posted by: 1RadChick at July 17, 2009 12:34 PM
I'm gonna have to agree with Rob. I love Pandora and am even considering upgrading (I am currently using my 24 hour free trial of Pandora One). The only two things that annoy me is that you can't use the "Move to another station" feature, or be able to rate previous songs like you can on the website, as I use these features a lot.
Thanks and keep up the good work!
Posted by: Nick at February 13, 2010 8:18 PM
I'd like to echo the requests to the ability to view/rate at least one previous song. I often end up waiting to rate a song until a new one starts (because that reminds me that I haven't done so yet.)
That being said, it is great to have this desktop app. Being able to control things from the notification bar is great.
-- A happy new user of pandora one.

Also hoping to stream to an Airport Express.
Thanks!
Posted by: Shane at April 19, 2010 10:11 PM
I think the app is great! I especially like the feature of minimizing to the taskbar; really handy when you shouldn't be streaming at certain places. However, I do think that it would be a great idea to be able to add variety to a station through the app. Another feature that I love but isn't included in the app is the ability to share what I'm listening to, either with Twitter, Facebook, or whatever other options are available...just some food for though! Keep up the great work!
Posted by: Luis Jimenez at June 4, 2010 11:32 PM
Works on Ubuntu 9.10 perfectly.
Just install air, it winds up in /opt/Adobe Air
Run the air installer with full path to the pandora*.air file.
Thanks...AIR is pretty handy.
Posted by: Chris at June 23, 2010 6:46 AM
Now the app is useless... what's the point of a desktop program if you can't see bio, lyrics, or full song info without opening a browser? It's too small, too simple, not enough preference options... sorry, but I think this was a failure.
Posted by: Luke at July 14, 2010 10:11 AM
For me, too minimalist. You can't even delete stations!
I'd also like to be able to see my play history. Sometimes I'm engaged in something and don't check on the artist name before the song is over, and then I've lost a musical lead and the opportunity to tell you I liked it. This behavior seems pretty core to Pandora's mission to me, and I'm surprised the app doesn't support it
