Viewer Mail - What is Pandora doing to promote musicians?

In our ninth Viewer Mail installment, we take on a question about the artists and creators of the music you hear:

WHAT IS PANDORA DOING TO PROMOTE MUSICIANS?

If you have any questions that you'd like to have answered, just flip on your webcam or other video camera, tell us your name and where you're from, and then record yourself asking the question. Then, send us that video file and we'll do our best to answer your question on-camera.

We're also pleased to announced our new Pandora channel on YouTube. Here's how you can subscribe for free.

I hope you're able to deliver on the ideas Tim talked about it this video sometime in the near future. I've been hoping that Pandora one day could be my one stop website for music.

There are a few other things I'd love to see in improving your artist information:

1. Up to date band information - The band information you have is interesting but doesn't appear to be updated on a regular basis.

2. Release dates - Even if an artist's new music hasn't made it into Pandora yet it would be nice to know that they have released something new.

3. I know Tim mentioned being able to know when bands you like will be coming to a venue near you, but simply knowing they're on tour would be useful too.

I know that most of the music purchases I've made over the last three years plus (since I started listening to Pandora) have been driven what I've heard on Pandora. I also don't think I would have purchased as much music as I have over the last three years without Pandora. I just haven't heard as many bands as I enjoy anywhere else.

So keep up the great work and I look forward to your new artist related features.

BTW I love the new Paused icon that appears over the song information when I pause a song. Another great feature!

It sounds good. I hope that this site grows to an even bigger medium. I like what I hear so far though. Do major labels listen to the music on this site?

I absolutely love my Pandora radio! I have it on my computer at work and use it every day! I also use it on my blackberry in the car because my wife doesn't like my kind of music. Thank you so much for Pandora!! It really is a lifesaver!

Oh yeah. This is a great thing to help musicians to promote. Internet is the place where information spreads immediately, so such a promotion via web works better than anything. Thank you all so much for doing this great job.

hello well one thing i think you should change is that after a serten number of songs you skip you can't skip anymore. some of the songs yeah i like that i skip but i only skipped them because i've heard them a lot during the day.

How can I put a link on my blog to Pandora? I'm still in the planning stages but I think people should have some music while they read my blog! LOL!

Is there any chance Pandora will be available on XM radio anytime in the near future, I would love it in my car without having to plug in my I-Phone and running down my battery.

Posted by: Jeff at July 7, 2009 10:40 AM

@Amanda -- The number of skips is limited by our webcasting license. There is a finite number of skips you can do before it becomes "on-demand music," at least in the eyes of the law.

@John -- Thanks for recommending Joyce Harris, eh! For future suggestions, please feel free to send them directly to suggest-music[at]pandora[dot]com.

@Jeff -- To play Pandora in your car, you can currently do so by getting it on any mobile device, and then either using an RF transmitter or plugging into your cassette deck or Aux input on the dash. Here's info on which mobile devices are currently supported: http://www.pandora.com/on-the-go

The old model of record companies controlling what music people heard is dead. Here's to a new model open to all
