Lyrics, Variety, Gifts, and other Tweaks

We've been quietly rolling out a number of enhancements to Pandora.com the last few weeks and I thought I'd tell you a bit about them.

The biggest of the bunch is the launch of lyrics! This has been one of the most requested features for Pandora for as long as I can remember and the trick for us has always been to find a great provider of legal, fully licensed lyrics to share with you. Happy to say that we've found a great partner in Gracenote and last week we launched the first iteration of our lyric integration. To see the lyrics for the song you're currently listening to just pull up the "about this music" panel underneath the player and select the lyrics tab. We'll show you the first four lines of the song on the home page and you can click through to a second window that will show you the complete lyrics for the songs. Find a song that moves you? Click the share button to send them to a friend.

We've also been fiddling with the interface for adding more variety to your stations. Variety is a tricky subject when it comes to radio. We never want you to get bored with your stations, but a certain amount of repetition is welcome and expected. We're constantly tweaking the core algorithm to impact station variety and we're not done in that dimension. On the other hand, we've always had tools that allow you to expand the musical scope of a station by adding more song or artist "seeds" -- but that interface has been largely hidden and only used by a small minority of our listeners. In a change that rolled out a few weeks ago we've added a "Add variety..." button to the player itself so that it's easier to find and access. We've also updated the Add Variety panel to prompt you with a few ideas about artists you might want to add when you run out of your own ideas.

We also recently launched a "station gift" feature -- this is your chance to make a kind of Pandora "mix tape" for a friend. Just visit www.pandora.com/station_gift, pick some favorite artists or songs, choose a design, and we'll take care of the rest. Think of it as a musical e-card from Pandora.

One last tidbit you may have noticed is that we now support "bulk" purchase through both iTunes and Amazon MP3. Instead of buying songs one at a time, you can now use your Pandora bookmark list as a starting point for buying a whole bunch of music with just a single click. Click the "Buy All" button on your profile page to get started (and don't worry, you'll have plenty of chances to review your song selections before the purchase actually goes through).

We've had a lot of fun building these new features and we hope you enjoy using them. As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback and ideas in the comments.

Hey to everyone over there at Pandora!

I normally don't comment for ANYTHING, but I was so blown away at my first experience with Pandora yesterday that I had to let you know how amazing I think this is. I've heard of Pandora, but I figured it was like those other DIY internet radio stations, so I stuck with listening to my iTunes library. Yesterday I gave in and gave Pandora a try, and right away, my station was playing some pretty awesome music that I had never heard of THAT I ACTUALLY LIKED. I've tried Yahoo Music before, and compared to each other, Yahoo's a 2 and Pandora's a 10. Thanks for the hard work. It's paying off, at least for me! THANK YOU!!

Pandora is absolutely one of the coolest sites on the web and is hands-down the best music listening site on the web! As a former web-marketing manager (now turned junior high teacher by choice) I have 2 suggestions: 1) try displaying ads that meet a personal interest profile; this should increase ad value via relevance; 2) Please add a WORLD MUSIC category with subcategories by global region with additional subsubcatories of traditional and modern. As much as I can, I play a TON of music from Pandora in my history and geography classes.

Keep up the AWESOME work!!!

Tim,

I'm honestly blown away by Pandora. Being a 51-year-old Clevelander, my taste in music has a pretty wide range. Depending on my mood, my listening tastes run the gamut from Herman's Hermits to Kelly Clarkson back to Alice in Chains. That's why I got hooked on Launchcast until it's absorption. For the heck of it today I did a search on alternatives to the CBS surrogate and found Slacker, Last.FM and Pandora. While the others have their attributes, I'm pleased to say Pandora is AWESOME. Your site is super clean and friendly to the eyes and your really personal approach, including a follow-up welcome e-mail just took me totally by surprise!

Keep up the awesome work! All the best to you and your crew from the Rock capital...

Thank you for making and telling us about all these new features! I'm particularly impressed with the lyrics function and hope that Gracenote will have a lyrics database to match Pandora, as so far only more popular artists have lyrics.

Posted by: Lei at April 1, 2009 03:31 PM

The lyrics feature is a good one, thanks.

The rest is minor and much less important user-wise, than:
* GLOBAL BAN LIST. Especially where there user can manually put the wannabe musicians.
* BAN MERGE LIST. You take two thumbdown lists from two stations and generate one large one for both stations. For all stations. That helps reach two-song minimum ban capacity and reduces the risk of getting Eminem on a Beatles/Zombies station.
* Better interface for browsing large thumbdown/thumbup lists. I have more than 500 entries in each, and the browser collapses in its current interface.

thank you! this site is great!! i never close my browser because of you guys. there's a wide variety of music and the list is almost endless.

why get satellite radio when you've got pandora?

keep up the good work. :D

Normally i login to listen to tracks from last.fm, but today I came across Pandora and was very impressed by it. Both sites are great, and in terms of navigation, I feel your site is easier to get around, and having lyrics feature should be an even great pull to those hoping to hymn along to the music.Best wishes to Pandora,Maria Duval

I came back from US few months ago, I really need Pandora in my country. Brazil is waiting for Pandora.

When will the service available in Brazil???
We cant wait.

Thanks for the updates. As a long time listener to Pandora.com I see that besides the lyrics change the new features are really great for helping new users and generating new users.

There are still a few things that I'd like to see and have suggested in the past. I know you have to prioritize additions, but hopefully you'll consider these again.

1) Allow the repeat interval to be changed to 24 hours so you don't hear the same song on a station more than once a day. It appears to be set to 4 hours which is great, but I'd love to have it longer.

2) Allow a person to toggle a station to only play new music based on their seed and thumbs up songs. This would be something you could turn on and off for a station when you're feeling more like hearing new music.

3) Allow "new music" stations or a "new music" switch which only play songs added to Pandora in the last year. I'd love to know about new music as it comes in rather than waiting for it to filter into one of my existing stations.

Thanks again for the great site and service.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful feedback about the new features. Glad to hear you're enjoying them!

As far as being available outside the US, there's unfortunately no ETA on that. At this point, we still have to secure reasonable royalty rates on the US.

At Pandora, we're all about tackling things one at a time. Look at the steps we've made in the last couple months: support for tons of WinMo phones, Blackberry phones, gift stations, and LYRICS, not to mention our analysis division adding new genres like Celtic and Hawaiian...I mean, shoot...it's really quite a lot in the positive growth department.

Which is all to say if we haven't got it covered yet, just wait and see. Onward and upward!

take care,
Alee

I really like Pandora. It is a great. Just a comment, I've noticed lately that the album cover shown does not match the artist or song being played. Just an observation.

Posted by: jerry at April 3, 2009 07:18 AM

Tom, the addition of lyrics is *so* wonderful! As a person who grew up with hearing loss in the middle to high frequencies, I rarely had a clue what songs were about even though I could really enjoy the music. Now I can make a connection between the sound of the music and the meaning of the song, thanks to the provision of the lyrics, which makes the listening experience much more powerful. Thanks so much, Pandora, for finally providing the lyrics!

Posted by: Dana at April 3, 2009 10:21 AM

I listen all day at work. I also listen at home and I have selected bands like Beasties and Run DMC, which are great to dance around the house to with my 4 year old. Your site keeps me going at work all day much more effectively than coffee, but Run DMC and Beasties and my other bands led to Public Enemy, which I like, but I sure don't want my 4 year old repeating some of their more interesting lyrics, or my boss popping in while Rage is screaming "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me". Is there a Tipper Gore button that I could push when I need to clean up my act. I hate to use the "C" word, but if I could set some level of censorship for my station that would be great.
Thanks,
Aaron

Posted by: Aaron at April 3, 2009 03:02 PM

@Aaron--To block explicit content from your stations, simply use our explicit lyrics filter! Here's how it works, from the FAQ:

Click the blue "account" link in the upper right of the page, to the right of the minor's account name. (In certain views of the Pandora Tuner, you must first click the "Account" button which will appear along the top edge of the Pandora Tuner, then select "Edit Your Account.") At the bottom of the "Your account settings" screen, to the right of the "Allow explicit content?" text, click "edit." Then click the "NO. Do not allow explicit content" button. That should do it!

Cheers,
Alee

I started listening at work after I was told that the "other" internet station was not good for our computers. I miss being able to choose the exact songs that I like to hear and then listening to them on my "station." That is not to say that I haven't heard good music that I have never heard of, I am just going through a lot more that I don't like to get to the ones that I do like-

Posted by: tk at April 6, 2009 01:52 PM

Hi,

I have a helpful suggestion if anyone is listening . . .
I love your site, but it would be great if I could turn off artists that come up on my stations. I consider some of them copycats, or cheap knock-offs of some of my favorites. And, while they match the genre I have selected, they make my skin crawl nonetheless.

Posted by: reader_08 at April 6, 2009 02:28 PM

@reader_08--when you hear a song you don't like, just give it a thumbs-down! that tells Pandora that you don't want to hear that song or other ones like it. hope that helps.

-A

Posted by: Alee - Listener Advocate at April 6, 2009 03:31 PM

Alee, dear advocate,

As stated above already, the thumb-down doesn't help when you open a new station.

IMHO these are really important: GLOBAL ban-list, thumbdown list MERGE and better interface (possibly via import/export) of thumbdown/thumbup.

The new lyrics application is fabulous, and I'm so excited to finally get Pandora on my Blackberry! I really like soundtracks to movies and if you could develop an application especially for listening to soundtracks you like and others like them, I think Pandora would be perfect. Thanks!

Truly appreciate the lyrics being added. It'll be nice to have them available here instead of having to load a "lyrics" site for each song. Keep up the great work!

A couple of months ago, a friend of mine asked me if I listened to Pandora radio, I told her no I listened to another internet radio station, one that played a lot of good music. That's when she told me about Pandora. For a couple of days I was loyal to my internet radio station. I didn't feel like switching and getting the same BS. But one day I got fed up with the same frickin' songs and limitations that I decided to try Pandora. AND I HAVE NEVER GONE BACK!! I loved it so much that I recommended it to a co-worker. Now I can't even get her attention without having to wave my hand in her face or throw a shoe at her. We are allll soooo hooked. The best part is we are both Latina listeners and the variety of music from that genre blows me away! I listen to songs in Pandora that I hadn't heard in years...and it makes me a fan once again! I play it at home, while cleaning the house, dancing around, can't get enough ( because of this I invested in better speakers).

My only gripe is as much as I love Marc Anthony, he is not the only salsero out there, he keeps popping up every 5 seconds in my station. And there are also stations I have with other artists, but one or two songs play by them and the rest is something else, and if I listen long enough,t he songs go into a whole other genre all together...not cool. Also I agree with Paul Maloy, I would love to hear global regional music. It would be AWESOME!
OK enough praisin', gotta get back to work...just one more thing I LOVE PANDORA!!!

Posted by: Melissa at April 8, 2009 09:27 AM

I'd love to see you come up with a way for us to type in a couple of lines(lyrics) of a song, and you guys match it up to tell us what artist and song title. That would ROCK!
You know... cuz sometimes my brain doesn't work so well!

Posted by: Amy at April 8, 2009 01:06 PM

@Roman--Noted! Perhaps we can add these as advanced features at some point.

@JC--we've JUST gotten started adding orchestral soundtracks and have many more on the way. To be sure our soundtrack section is wanting for volume and refinement but we're working on it!

@Paul--two thumbs-down for the same artist bans that artist from the station you're listening to.

@Melissa--our international collection is admittedly lacking. However, we're doing better on the Latin artist front at this point with plans to keep adding so thanks for this feedback!

@Amy--along with Roman above, these would be some fancy features that we could eventually offer. Thanks for mentioning this!

Glad everyone's digging on the changes overall.

Yo guys keep it up. New features are awesome. Keep the commercials low though, don't get greedy with money from advertising or the next best thing out there will keep you at the back of the pack.

A lot of a little bit of money is much better then a little bit of a lot of money. That should make sense :)

I was having trouble with my xm station - they took my station and morphed it...:< so when I typed in online radio stations and your site came up I just logged in and well... it changed everything! The guy's name is Matt Haviland and I heard him on my local public radio jazz station the other day, liked it, and couldn't wait to make a Pandora station out of it, but no go! Any word on the status of that?
Thanks!

Congratulations on a great free radio service!
1) I have been building my Pandora station for a couple weeks now, and while I like the variety that seeding provides, there are still too many suggested tracks that I have to give a 'thumbs down' to, and then the limit of skips forces me to listen to many tunes that Pandora hasn't yet learned NOT to suggest.
2) Speaking of Pandora's learning process, imagine, being a pantheist free thinker yet being offered Christian music and artists. Come on, that's gotta be a programming oversight. Such attributes should be part of the genome, so that the algorithm can stop suggesting such tunes.
3) Question: How can one get MORE frequency of some key tunes that are essential to the station? Maybe you could add a 'two thumbs up' selection to move those tunes into a more frequent.
4) Browser question: How can one unblock pop-ups for Pandora in the Google Chrome browser. I prefer to use Chrome -- Firefox and IE are too sluggish handling Pandora (and Slacker)

I realize you need a way to monetize your service but I just can't get used to these Jarring Audio ads, especially the one about College. PAINFUL. Here is an alternative idea. How about you charge 2 or 3 dollars for that excellent iPhone app. People will pay for it.

I used to buy any music I discovered via Pandora using your links to iTunes. I will not do this as long as you are running those ads. I have been a member since 2005. Thanks Pandora.

I have been using Pandora for about 3 or 4 years now. But I used Yahoo launchcast since 2002, and I'm kinda bummed they discontinued customized stations there. They had some good ideas/features.

But I still have loved Pandora more, and it has definitely improved throughout the years - and is still improving!

Yet I can't help wishing some of the functionality from the Yahoo player was available on pandora.

1. First of all, only 2 thumbs down completely omits an artist from a station? That's pretty strict. What if I love most songs by an artist, but absolutely hate a few. I still want to hear music from that artist and artists similar.

- I think one remedy to this would be to allow thumbing up/down of artists and also albums like we do songs right now. A thumbed down artist would never play again, while a thumbed up artist would play more frequently. Similar with albums.

2. Being a computer programmer specializing in artificial intelligence, I understand that "seeding" a song/artist/album is quite different than "thumbing up/down" a song. Therefore I think it would also be nice to have a "seed" button on each song in the player, similar to the thumb up/down buttons. It is a hassle to have to click on "add variety" and wait for the search to find an artist when you are playing a song by that artist right at that moment.

- I do like the "add variety" feature though for adding artists/songs/albums that haven't played in the player recently.

3. Now I know this is pushing it, but these are just ideas for improvement. It would be nice to have more control like yahoo had in that yahoo allowed us to rate songs/albums/artists on a scale of either 0 to 5 stars or (even more control) 0 to 100 pts.

4. Another thing that was nice about Yahoo was the ability to go to an "artist's" page and rate ALL of the songs/albums by that artist.

5. Sometimes a song plays that I would like to add to another station/s but I don't want to 'remove' it from the current station. Yet the "move to" option thumbs down the song on the current station. Would it be possible to allow an "add to station" option? Also it would be create to "add songs" to MULTIPLE stations, not just one. Summarizing, add a song to one or many stations without removing the song/artist from the current station.

I am fully aware that new features take time, and also that new features may be voted against by committee. I do believe that these features would greatly enhance users' experiences. But yes, they are mainly for convenience. Yet, they would be awesome!!!

Thanks for everything you do guys!!! If possible, it would be nice to have an email with any comments about my suggestions, or about features you guys are already working on.

Thanks.

Hi - I been listening to Pandora for a few months now and loving it.

I don't know if this is new or I just missed it but I found a pattern in the sequence of songs. About four songs of the same 'genre' are played in a row. I have several distinct genres on my station and I would prefer that they are randomly mixed rather than grouped. Would I have to rebuild a station for each type of music and use Quick Mix or would Quick Mix end up with the same pattern result?

A negative of using Quick Mix would be that all of the stations would be mixed and I have some stations for specific needs and would not want them included.

A nice feature in this regard would be a setting to control grouping vs. random selection within a station and/or to control which stations mix.

My friends had told me about Pandora for a while now, but I figured it was all a bunch of hype, but this stuff is INCREDIBLE!
I haven't even touched iTunes in a week!

My only complaint, which I can work around, but it is a minor pain, is that when I give a thumbs down, it skips over the song. This is a really good idea, but a lot of these songs I like, but don't think fit in the playlist. And I figure if you can already skip a song with the right arrow key, then one could just do that after they "thumbs-down" a song. An alternative idea I have to this is to just put a button in a preference pane that sets a check-box for other people that would like this. Just my suggestion, but this is still awesome (as if you don't already know)

Pandora Radio is the most incredible, amazing...I have no words for how I feel about this thing! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your features, old and new! Every time I tune into Pandora, it is like opening a present! I have MY stations and they are so delightfully filled with the music I LOVE! I LEARN so much about the artist, albums, songs, lyrics...I just can't believe what you have to offer - and it's FREE. I, however, will be purchasing an MP3 player and buying the music I love from this site! It has given me the knowledge and variety of just what I LOVE to listen to. I don't have to sift, wonder, wish, dig, and frustrate myself finding similar artists. This thing is FABULOUS! I share it with everyone I know! And in setting them up, I show them how to share their stations with me! I am from a very musical family - entertainers, musicians, performers, and my 3 young adults have carried on the tradition. My son, Brian in Boise, turned me on to Pandora. We all love it! Keep moving on...Love you guys. Just wish you had a feather, and I had invented Pandora, and we'd both be tickled!

i want to know how can i down load pandora music

Posted by: mona eubanks at April 20, 2009 05:53 AM

OK, here's what I get for lagging on updates, lots of questions to catch up on!

@Luke--The problem is that you only have one station! Split all those seeds up amongst multiple stations. You can have up to 100 after all! One of those artists must have some Christian music in their catalog which is why you're getting some CCM in your station. Unfortunately, we don't support Chrome so i can't help you there! Pandora works best with IE and Firefox.

@C--If you opt to subscribe for $3 a month, you will not see any ads on the web or on any device when you use Pandora.

@Jacob--Thanks for the recommendation. We'll keep an eye out for this guy.

@Ben--Nice feature suggestions. We're always trying to gussy up the interface with new stuff and some of these would work nicely. We'll see what happens...

@Jim--I can't stress this enough: don't consolidate multiple genres into one station. Split them up! Also QuickMix can be set to pick only certain stations. Use the QuickMix options button located below the QuickMix station.

@Sam--Again, thanks for this neat idea. I think every new feature we've ever added originated with a user suggestion at some point so thanks for these!

@Bonnie--I'm SO glad to hear that the Pandora bug has spread for you and yours! Thanks for sharing this.

@Mona--Click the "Menu" button located on the current song window to find a link to purchase and download any song from Pandora via iTunes or Amazon.

Whew! OK, thanks for the feedback folks and hope your week is starting off right. It's a scorcher in the Bay today so enjoy that if you're nearby.

Cheers,
Alee
