Celtic, Cajun, and Hawaiian Music - Now on Pandora

Hello listeners!

Over the past months we've been hard at work readying some great new music for you, and we're happy to be able to say that Celtic, Cajun, and Hawaiian music stations are now live on Pandora!

We have taken great care to come up with the right musicological characteristics with which to evaluate these important genres. We have also been busy assembling the best Celtic, Cajun and Hawaiian music collections available anywhere, and will be continuing to do so from now on.

Without a doubt, you will discover things that we have overlooked, and we look forward to your help in improving and developing these collections and stations. Thanks in advance!

In the meantime, here are just a few starting points for ya!

Celtic:

Altan
Mary Black
Anne Briggs

Cajun:

Clifton Chenier
Buckwheat Zydeco
Nathan Abshire

Hawaiian:

Gabby Pahinui
Iz (Israel Kamakawiwo'ole)
Aunty Genoa Keawe
Sol Hoopii

happy listening!

ps - having general technical problems listening to Pandora? please email pandora-support[AT]pandora[DOT]com

pps - want to suggest music for these genres? email suggest-music[AT]pandora[DOT]com

ppps - and, for those of you who are waiting for us to get to other great genres of music (especially Indian and African music) please know that we are working on those as well. They are immensely complex, both in terms of their musical characteristics, and in the logistics of assembling respectable collections. We are working on it, while taking the necessary time to do it right!

What category is Hawaiian music under?

Posted by: Marty Mitchell at March 6, 2009 08:15 AM

hey marty -

I'm not sure I understand the question - in order to hear our hawaiian music stations, all you have to do is enter the name of an artist or song that is in that style, and Pandora will do the rest.

does that help?

Posted by: Michael Zapruder at March 6, 2009 08:32 AM

Awesome!

I also noticed musicals have made it into Pandora. Is this recent? I hadn't noticed it before.

Also, I just noticed that the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack has made it. I LOVE that soundtrack, so I'm glad it's in.

So glad you're working on world music. Keep up the good work!

I have been interested in checking out some music featuring the bouzouki ... specifically, traditional Greek music like you'd hear in "A Walk In the Clouds." I haven't been too successful. I've searched on the internet for artists but have not been able to have Pandora recognize them. Maybe some day you will bring some of that style to Pandora. Or is there already something there under folk music?

I've been trying to wiggle the Genome into giving me a celtic station for a while, and here it is with a simple click. Brilliant! Thank you so much for your long hours putting this together. This will be such a treasured addition.

Hey, right on!

I LOVE Pandora soooooo much. It's THE best internet radio I have ever come by. LOOOOOVE IT!!! Keep up the great and wonderful job. Man you guys are THE best.

My grand-daughter talked about Pandora on facebook, (she is at college) & I checked it out last night (I am going to be 71) & I just love it, I love all music, so I have a list of catagories & the music just keeps coming, one right after another. Wow, all my favorites & more, at my fingertips, love it. Thanks!!

Posted by: Pat at March 7, 2009 09:21 AM

I suppose this will be a good thing, as long as they play celtic music all the time.

I am currently listening to rush radio - wanting to listen to music by rush. Now I understand Pandora will play different music, but I just finished listening to my 25th song (I counted) and I still haven't heard a Rush tune.

This is something I would like to see fixed

i am panamanian i will love to listing to panamanian
reggaeton we were the the ones that started the spanish reggae but i see no panamanian music here

Posted by: Gamal Mack at March 8, 2009 05:09 AM

pandora should be on blackberries

Posted by: samantha at March 8, 2009 12:48 PM

Any change you all can add Spanish or Flamenco music? I've made my own stations, but others might like ones already made.

Thanks.

I've had a Celtic station on Pandora for 2 years now (Tir Na Nog), and the real problem was not a lack of coverage, but the fact that it was hard to distinguish Celtic songs from Folk, Country and Blue grass with the main genome. The improvements in the selection algorithm you completed last fall already shored up that problem for well-developed stations like mine. Nonetheless, this should help less developed Celtic stations. I did a quick run through my collection and I'm glad Kila has finally received some coverage, and I was shocked that you actually now have some Micheal O Suilleabhain. Excellent job as usual.

hey scott -

the reason your earlier celtic station was drifting was because it was based on some cletic music that had been analyzed in our pop or rock genome - since we have nearly a hundred thousand albums in our collection, a few edge cases inevitably get through.
Now, we have a good collection of matching music, plus we have analyzed these recording using parameters that better fit the specific elements of Celtic music.
In any case, very glad you're happy with the stations!

jive - we have some Flamenco music, and we are working on music from Spain as well.

gamal - please send your music requests to us at suggest-music@pandora[DOT]com and we'll try to hook up some more panamanian reggaeton.

dave - that shouldn't happen - email the support folks at pandora-support@pandora[DOT]com - they might be able to give you some help with that rush station.

teryl lee - we are hoping to be able to get to Greek music at some point, thanks for the request!

and yes eman - we have musicals - they've been in all along, but not too long ago we made a concerted effort to round out the collection.

thanks for the comments all - remember:

I learned about Pandora this weekend. I got to work today and got started. It's great.

Am a senior citizen and been listening to Pandora for about 2 years now. You have introduced me to New Age, and exposed me to many new artists that I never would have encountered otherwise. Hope your issues with R.I.A.A. are over and you can hang in there. I really appreciate your efforts & I recommend you often.

I am delighted to see more Celtic music on Pandora, but I'm posting this comment to say that there needs to be an easy way to report mistakes in album/song information. I've seen a number of songs that were labeled as the incorrect track on an album, and now this morning, I see that on this album, the completely wrong album art(by a very differnt artist) is present: http://www.pandora.com/music/song/natalie+merchant/just+cant+last

There should be some easy obvious way of reporting these inaccuracies to Pandora to improve this wonderful service. I see no direct contact link of any kind. This is the one serious flaw I've found with this service thus far.

Is it just me, or is John Mayer monopolizing this website???? Every other song is John Mayer. And he is getting tire!!!!

Posted by: Matt at March 11, 2009 07:35 AM

That's great I could not find any Krump songs or beats on your site. I was able to find techno beats, but Krump is a large genre I would encourage Pandora to look into.

Thanks for adding Hawai'ian music to Pandora. I would love to see more Hawai'ian artists added to the playlists. Jack Johnson, Bob Marley, John Mayer, Seal and Colbie Caillat are good in there own respect but don't belong on my Israel Kamakawiwo'ole station. The Brothers Cazimero is the only Hawai'ian band that comes up on his station. Better choices would be Keali'i Reichel (pleeeeeeeeez!), Na Leo, Cecilio & Kapono, Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, Teresa Bright, Peter Moon Band and Jake Shimabukuro.

I love Pandora! Thanks for reading my input.

I used yahoo launchcast for 5 years and got very used to chosing my own music. I have been using Pandora for almost a month. I am slowly discovering the ways to groom it more towards my taste but I find it replays music too often. If there is a way to avoid that other than blocking a song for an entire month, I would like to know. I am glad to be finding bits and pieces of Bhangra and Indian music. I hope you keep adding more.

I so love this site & am Happy to see you are adding Celtic music! Keep the music Flowing...ThankYou...Music is Life! <3

I have been listening to Pandora for several years. I tell all my friends about it. It is wonderful service that you have provided. I just became a full subscriber and I am certain that that fee is not anywhere near the value of the site. Please keep up the fantastic work!

how about some arabic music? cheb mami? amr adab? also turkish music? this would be great.. an international music station would be wonderful on pandora!

Posted by: ar at March 14, 2009 09:11 PM

Why does Pandora not play the song you request first ? I have a very unique taste in music and have added many songs to my stations, but they never seem to get played. Instead I get the same songs over and over. How do I correct this ?

I go to a thing called "Irish Fest" and the "South Side Irish Parade" every year.

They play Celtic music constantly along with Irish Dancers. I love going with friends or family. Everyone is so nice and the music rocks.

If anyone hasn't listened to Celtic Music I think you should go listen to it right now.

What about other countries? I for one want to see more Japanese music (both modern and perhaps earlier music too). Out of the Japanese artists and composers I've searched only a couple have been in the genome project.
