Pandora on Windows Mobile

Windows MobileIt's been well over a year since I first talked publicly about Pandora for Windows Mobile. After a number of false starts and broken promises on my part, I'm happy to report that we've now released our first Windows Mobile implementations of Pandora.

Today we're rolling out Pandora for the HTC XV6900 on Verizon, the HTC Touch on Sprint, and the Motorola Q9C on both Sprint and Verizon. These are free to download and are supported solely through advertising. The entire Pandora experience you've come to expect on the web is available on your Windows Mobile phone: create stations, listen, give feedback, QuickMix, etc.

In cooperation with AT&T we are also launching Pandora support for three additional Windows Mobile phones: the Samsung Epix, the LG Incite, and HTC Fuze. AT&T has decided to make these versions of Pandora available on a monthly subscription basis.

To get started with Pandora on your HTC Touch, HTC XV6900, Motorola Q9C, LG Incite, HTC Fuze, or Samsung Epix simply visit http://www.pandora.com using Mobile Internet Explorer on your smartphone and follow the installation instructions.

We're continuing the work required to bring Pandora to a broader range of Windows Mobile handsets. Keep your eye on this blog and this page for updates on new handsets.

For those of you that have been keeping an eye on this since I first talked about it so long ago, thanks again for your patience. Enjoy!

Awesome. And just two posts ago people were sardonically suggesting, "I know how to stump tomp- ask him about pandora for windows mobile"

Posted by: Tomek at December 17, 2008 05:59 PM

Well to be fair, I pretty well deserved it. Sorry it took so long everybody. Happy listening!

Posted by: Tom Conrad at December 17, 2008 06:21 PM

I love seeing pandora expand to more and more platforms. I'm still crossing my fingers for media center applications like Windows Media Center (and it's extenders...like the Xbox), Boxee, XBMC, etc.

Any hope for my Blackberry?

Posted by: Katherine at December 17, 2008 09:12 PM

By any chance, will this be appearing on BlackBerry at all?

What gives w/ the paid AT&T thing? It's just a web site, and I pay for unlimited AT&T internet, so why does Pandora block me if I don't pay an extra Pandora tax to AT&T? Did you sell out, or what? I don't have to pay extra for any other web site I visit from my phone, so it's obviously something you've done special for them (presumably to get kickbacks for yourselves?). I even have a PAID Pandora account.

Posted by: AndyN3 at December 17, 2008 10:08 PM

As a new Fuze owner I am extremely upset. Why must I be forced to pay for a service that is offered free to other WiMo phones on other networks but also is also offered FREE to another AT&T phone, the Iphone. Absurd. If you guys at Pandora are letting AT&T veto your ability to offer a service that is already freely offered on another of their phones, you can be expect the upcoming loss of a deeply devoted listener.

How frustrating.

Posted by: Miguel at December 18, 2008 01:43 AM

Will you be coming out with a version for T-Mobile customers? Please email me with a response if you would be so kind. Thanks very much! :)

Posted by: Carey at December 18, 2008 05:36 AM

please come up with something for blackberries... the storm would be awesome with it.

Posted by: jery at December 18, 2008 09:09 AM

@Carey, @Adam, @Katherine - truth is that I ended up frustrating a lot of you by talking about our Windows Mobile intentions before we were ready to release things, so for now I'm going to have to stay silent on the particulars of our plans for T-Mobile and Blackberry. Having said that, we are very interested in making Pandora available everywhere we possibly can. Stay tuned!

@Miguel, @AndyN3 - we share your desire to see Pandora be made available for free on our AT&T implementations. In the mobile world, the carrier has all of the pricing power. If you try to go around their wishes they can, and will, block traffic to your application. Our strong preference is for Pandora to be available ad-supported free everywhere and we'll continue to work with AT&T in the hopes that they'll come around to the same view for the Windows Mobile phones on their network.

Posted by: Tom Conrad at December 18, 2008 09:09 AM

Folks, bandwidth on cell networks is shared. What you think is "unlimited" certainly cannot be, or someone would use it all, and there'd be none left for you.

I'm sure whatever network you're on has either 1) decided the hit to shared bandwidth by N users of Pandora is such that they have to charge $M to those users due to $-M in lost "unlimited" subscribers, or 2) they will take the shared bandwidth hit, if they can get Y users to upgrade to new phones that now have a unique (Pandora) feature.

The only thing that's unlimited is how much you'd have to spend to try to obtain it.

Posted by: Wade at December 18, 2008 09:18 AM

By the way, thanks for this update! I may become a Pandora user now! :)

Posted by: Wade at December 18, 2008 09:31 AM

Off topic, but i just heard my first "commercial" -- and it strangled my love for Pandora. PLEASE don't add commercials that talk to us: i LOVE the sophisticated use of ads on the Pandora page -- and recall the advertisers with respect: HP,Apple,Northface,Becks,Intel, etc. I cringe thinking of having to turn off Pandora if commercials are the norm: just say No!

Posted by: Gisela at December 18, 2008 12:41 PM

@Gisela--we're still working on these audio ads to make sure they are as unobtrusive as possible. The brutal reality that we are trying to negotiate as delicately as possible: Pandora needs ad revenue to keep our operation afloat. We totally understand the sanctity of the listening experience and we do offer an ad-free Pandora experience for $36 per year. This is a drop in the bucket and we've purposely kept the price low so as not to railroad our listeners or make the cost of subscription out of anyone's reach. Hope everyone appreciates our stance on this matter. Thank you and take care!

Posted by: Alee - Listener Advocate at December 18, 2008 05:24 PM

@Tom - I don't understand this. How does the carrier have any say over your pricing? I have unlimited internet access and can stream music and video from all manner of sources from the internet. While there are some AT&T branded services, there is also the whole wide internet out there. I can download MP3s using a all sorts of web browsers. I have Windows Mobile - I have the internet. That internet doesn't just deliver text websites but also has all sorts of multimedia services.

Why should your particular service be subject to restrictions and pricing negotiations that other things like YouTube are not? That seems like a pretty lousy way to provide content. AT&T should have no veto authority regarding your specific content delivery method. AT&T doesn't block mp3 downloads in Pocket IE. Why do you let them interfere with your delivery of music through other sources. I have unfiltered internet in my pocket. All sorts of third party applications utilize the internet with no input whatsoever from AT&T.

The heart of this is that I don't understand why carriers should have any input. My desktop DSL provider doesn't work with you to provide your primary service. You don't need their go ahead to decide whether to offer an ad-supported or subscription business model. Why let AT&T push you around? Why are you playing by their rules? They don't block other multimedia sites. I can freely watch YouTube videos. I can freely buy and download MP3s from numerous independent artists throughout the internet.

I can watch full length movies on Hulu by simply using an alternative web browser. And actually, I can enjoy the desktop version of Pandora by using that browser. Pandora is provided seamlessly, in its full ad-supported glory.

I don't like having to use that browser. It looks funky and wierd when I have to peer at your website through a 640x480 window. It works, but it isn't that easy. I would really like to use the sleek application that you have created. However, I am unwilling to pay an additional $8.99 for the privilege to use that service. Not when I already already pay to have the entire internet at my fingertips. Not when another AT&T device, the Iphone, gets it for free. Not when Sprint and Verizon devices get it for free.

I love your content and service. I really do. I would love it have it available on my mobile device and wouldn't even mind paying for it. I just don't want to be discriminated against based upon my operating system. Both the Fuze and Iphone run on AT&T. Setting aside Verizon and Sprint, why must I pay when Iphone users need not? Until they need to or until I don't I will not subscribe. I'll grudgingly use your desktop service on my mobile device. It's not very easy or user friendly, but it is fair.

Thanks for listening and responding. You deserve kudos for your customer service.

Posted by: Miguel at December 18, 2008 05:43 PM

@Miguel - This is all pretty tricky for us. At the heart of the matter is our direct relationship with AT&T which allows us to deliver Pandora on 20 or so different AT&T phones. This direct relationship means that AT&T does in fact control pricing of our application for most phones. The iPhone is a notable exception. We're working hard to make Pandora available ad-supported free on every possible carrier and phone, but at this point we have to abide by AT&T's wishes with respect to phones operating on their network and their current strategy requires that our listeners subscribe when listening from most phones.

We'll continue to work on getting them to change their minds. We share your vision of open access to Pandora on AT&T and all other carrier networks.

Posted by: Tom Conrad at December 18, 2008 09:06 PM

The issue with AT&T regulating access to Pandora, especially on WM based phones with full html browsers, is ridiculous. If I'm paying for unlimited Internet access already why should I have to pay an extra fee to access Internet content for which I have already ponied up $30 a month? If I can access your site for free from my computer why should your site cost anything on a mobile browser? I like the site and will continue to use it on my computer but I'm not being screwed out of another $5 a month on top of my $30 monthly unlimited Internet access package by AT&T just to access Pandora. Make it ad based, your shortcut may not be included in AT&T's default phone image but, you'll get more people listening long term if they aren't being beaten for another $5 every month anyway.

On my Q9h I use google maps/Microsoft Live search instead of AT&T's navigator app because I refuse to pay them another $10 to access the GPS feature Motorola built into the phone. I use mobile Wikipedia, YouTube and other "Applications" that AT&T would sell me through their application mall if I hadn't just gone to the mobile version of their websites and saved myself being charged for nothing. Many people do the same thing because we're tired of being nickel and dimed for access to applications and features of the phones we have purchased. Access to a free Internet based service is just one of those things I and many others won't pay for. Please reconsider/revisit the terms of your relationship with AT&T and keep access to your service free for everyone.

I love that you guys are going mobile and I know you guys are working hard at it. Which is why I understand the switch to AAC+ to lower bandwidth. But why oh why is it MONO???? I know there are two seperate versions mobile and non-mobile so why not Stereo for high bandwidth computers? The listening quality has been diminished. I still listen but am becoming more disheartened by the day.

Posted by: Patrick at December 19, 2008 09:03 AM

Sorry, in my last post I referenced $5, I was just using a generic number and didn't realize it was actually $8.99. Based on that new number, please take what I said before and add an additional $3.99 worth of 'disgusted'.

Is the AT&T subscription version of Pandora free of advertisements?

Posted by: Dustin at December 19, 2008 09:25 AM

Make this for android phones please?

Posted by: T at December 19, 2008 12:24 PM

@Patrick--WinMo should be stereo. What device are you using to listen? Write to pandora-support@pandora.com and we can help you get to the bottom of this.

@Dustin--yes, indeed. No ads!!!

@T--all we can say is stay tuned as more mobile devices come down the pike...

@Jerry and others--like Tom said above, we'll continue to work on getting AT&T to change their minds.

Thanks folks. Have a happy and safe pre-holiday weekend...

Posted by: chris at December 19, 2008 04:06 PM

@Tom - Thank you. I was unaware that there was a preexisting agreement with AT&T. It is reasonable for them to balk at offering a service for free that they currently make money with. The situation with the iPhone still troubles me, but the (positive) hypocracy is clearly AT&T's, not yours. My hope is that you consider terminating or not renewing your agreement with AT&T when the time arises. However, I can at least now understand why AT&T has veto power over you guys. Again, thanks for the thoughtful responses and information. At the very least, I now know who deserves (most of) the blame.

Posted by: Miguel at December 19, 2008 05:29 PM

Oh man, thanks for this finally, I love it. This is going to destroy my battery streaming Pandora all the time but its worth it.

I have to second that a Vista Media Center plugin would be amazing.

Thanks for the WM version though, a great Christmas present to us. :)

Love Pandora. Would love it more than the rest except can't find enough "world". Huge names outside of North America are entirely and weirdly invisible here.

What up with that?

Can find them on Last but would prefer to have them in the Pandora fashion.

people - i have enjoyed the free pandora radio for two months - now it won't play - the screen comes up but it stays on a song it never plays. would i get better reception if i subscribed to pandora? i get my internet from a verizon air card, i live in the country so it is on roaming - any ideas? i am desperate for pandora. thanks bonnie

Posted by: bonnie at December 21, 2008 05:03 PM

@Chris--Volume is controlled with the roller wheel control on the right side of the Q9C. Also, be sure to check your Windows Mobile system volume and make sure it's turned up. Go Into Settings->profiles->menu->edit->System sound volume. You can set this higher to maximize volume output.

@Bonnie--Subscription should have no affect on the ability to play Pandora. If you're having trouble getting Pandora to play, you might want to try some of our troubleshooting tips in our FAQ: http://blog.pandora.com/faq/#75

Take care all,

BLACKJACK II PLEASE!!!!!!

Posted by: B at December 23, 2008 09:36 AM

@jp
Sorry to hear about that. So far everyone who has reported this condition has had it cleared up via hard-resetting their WinMo device. (We think it may have to do with temporary data corruption on the handset, e.g. an infrequent side effect of installing programs since the last hard-reset on that device).

Of course you'd want to back up your device before performing the hard-reset. A solution like PIM Backup ( http://www.dotfred.net ) may be helpful, although we do not support or officially endorse any particular third-party software.

If you have additional issues, or questions or concerns before proceeding, please contact pandora-support@pandora.com for assistance.

I'm also having trouble with volume with pandora on my moto 9qc. Roller wheel has no effect. I tried changing system volume as suggested above, but still has no or sometimes very soft volume.

Posted by: david at December 24, 2008 04:24 AM

David - Try playing an mp3 file or other audio. Then raise the volume using the volume control /and/ the roller wheel. Then launch Pandora again.

Robert, Vito, - We can't say for sure which devices will support Pandora next, but there are quite a few of them in the development and testing pipeline

Restaurant - Thank you for your continued support.

Bonnie - Please email us at pandora-support @ pandora.com we'll try and sort this out

Everyone - Have a very happy holiday!

Just thought I'd point out to those that aren't aware, the Pandora app works on just about any WinMo phone I've tested it on. I have an HTC Titan (aka Sprint Mogul or Verizon XV6800) and it works perfectly. I've also tested it on an original MotoQ (with WinMo 5) and it worked great. Perhaps you guys could add these to the supported list so that when others with these phones point their mobile browser to pandora.com they won't get a "not supported" message?

Posted by: Austin at December 25, 2008 11:08 PM

I am voting for Blackberry too. At least, on my Pearl Flip / T-mobile - to be selfish ^o^.

Posted by: Michi at December 26, 2008 06:10 PM

Very niche market here, but what about us PDA users? We connect straight to the internet, so there wouldn't be any negotiating with service providers, just convincing half a million flavors of Windows Mobile to work.

(Asus A626 here, Windows Mobile 6 classic)

Posted by: T-D at December 27, 2008 10:15 PM

Why is the CAB for Windows Mobile not available on the site? You are trying to "guess" what device I'm using (based on browser headers?) and your site reports that my phone isn't supported. But based on the other models that are supported, I'm sure mine is too. Please make the CAB file freely available--or at least don't try to be too smart about guessing which phones you can support or not. I guess I'll have to troll sites for a copy of the CAB, as one other poster offered, but it would be better to get it from the source.

Oh, and don't assume everyone using a Windows Mobile device would be listening over a carrier connection. Most of the time, I could stream via Wi-Fi. All the more reason not to bow to the mobile operators' refusal to recognize themselves as nothing more than common carriers who should not try to arbitrarily monetize what travels over their bit pipes. I recognize radio spectrum for mobile phone service is a limited (and expensive) resource, but once Windows Mobile devices ship with IE6, it will be near-impossible to determine which device is a phone and which device is a PC. The fact that Pandora is free on iPhone but not on Windows Mobile seems like commercial price discrimination worthy of congressional hearings.

Posted by: JayTee at December 28, 2008 12:09 AM

I'm with Andy S, my vote goes to Windows Media Center and the XBOX. It would be great to have Pandora on those platforms!

Posted by: rogerrep at December 28, 2008 12:44 PM

As far as agreements with AT&T and pricing go, I can understand that those negotiations are with the carrier. However, I'm curious why you chose not to make the .CAB file available to "the rest of us" on other carriers to try it out. As far as I know, my carrier doesn't block any sites or ports or limit my bandwidth, and if they do that's between me and them. But if the .CAB works on one Windows Mobile handset then it'll work on MANY others, so why not make it available for those of us on other carriers to try? Believe me, I'll sign up for my $36/year the day I get streaming to my HTC Touch Pro.

Posted by: Mark at December 29, 2008 08:58 AM

My Q9c will not get any louder than damn near inaudible... I did the profile/system volume to loud, as well as launched another audio program which plays very loud but Pandora (which I am blown away with) still play very low. Any other suggestions?

Posted by: Jonathan at December 30, 2008 07:09 AM

Found the CAB file, installed on HTC Touch Pro and 6800--sounds great on Alltel's Rev A network! Oh, and I signed up for an account yesterday, too! The display is great on the 6800, but horribly mangled on the Touch Pro's 640x480 screen--you can make out part of the text and picture, but you can't read the button labels for the DPad, and the OK and other buttons on some of the other interface screens are far too small.
Love this service! I suggested it to my stylist, who now creates a custom channel for different times of day or for repeat customers. He asks a few questions about the music they like, and next time they come back he plays their channel.

Posted by: Mark at December 30, 2008 08:50 AM

Fist at all I love Pandora a lot. I used it about 1 year whenever I have access to internet.
But 8.99/month this is ridicules, if I already have unlimited Internet plan with ATT.
I have new account with ATT and added unlimited Internet, specifically for access to Pandora, because other Internet pages useless on such small device as cell phone.
But now I realize I need pay additional 8.99 every month. So until ATT will change their mind, I will drop my data plan, and switch to Slacker device, where I can access Internet radio for free, although I prefer Pandora mach more.

Posted by: Alex at December 30, 2008 02:50 PM

I have Samsung Blackjack AT&T which runs windows mobile,, Why is it not supported ? I have unlimited data usage and want to listen to pandora on go,

I believe if it can work on one windows mobile it should work on any windows mobile regardless of phone model..

Posted by: vasu at December 30, 2008 05:15 PM

Bottom line is Pandora sold out their users in order to get the app bundled on smartphones..

Nope. Not going to happen. not in a million years. There is a principal at stake and I would rather boycott pandora all together than even consider this.. I have an htc tytan with unlimited data on At&t. Explain to me why I should pay an extra tariff to visit a single website, when I have already paid to view them ALL anytime anyway i like?

Someone said something about 'bandwidth', but thats a joke. I pay for an unlimited data plan. I stream massive videos from all around the web that take much more bandwidth than pandora and i don't have to pay a tariff on that. if this was really about badnwidth then at&t shouldn't advertise their data plan as 'unlimited', but instead as 'limited with possibility of hidden fees'.

Whats the point in paying for an all- you can eat bandwidth package when you get get an extra charge for eating certain dishes...?

I have no respect left for pandora. Hear that? thats the sound of me switching to last.fm ..

Posted by: Erik hatesatandt at December 31, 2008 08:42 AM

I have 3 stations to try to listen for one song. One month and I have heard it twice. I understand about the licensing issues, however it doesn't make me want to listen for hours to hear one song. Play requested songs more often or I am gone.

Isn't AT&T's service fee for Pandora a violation of net neutrality? All traffic is treated the same regardless of its content? Also, you have no idea how much I appreciate Pandora on my phone. I absolutely love it!

I know that you guys are all in love with the Iphone but the G1 from T Mobile could use some love. Yes, there is a new operating system to contend with, but from all I have read it should be a heck of a lot easier to develop for Android than to get into the Apple App Store. Please develop for the G1 and you won't regret it!!!

Posted by: Jonathan at January 4, 2009 06:15 PM

To responde to Jonathan, Yes the G1 is cool.. No Coorperate email (yes they are fixing that soon) No teathering to laptop's.. bummer.. The G2 is coming out soon, and Flash should be available for it soon.. Now that we got 3G and soon to be 4G, LTE (long term evolution) and WiMax.. it would be great to have Pandora on my storm, and Bold.
I can't wait until its available for all carriers and devices.. But especially Blackberry's.

Posted by: ben at January 5, 2009 11:31 AM

Ok, maybe I've misread something here, but my take is that while I have an HTC touch, since it is with Alltel and not Sprint I can't get Pandora on my smartphone. It certainly seems that way since when I go to pandora.com on my Touch's browser I get the "this application won't work on your device" display.

Posted by: Todd at January 5, 2009 12:43 PM

Hey, I wrote earlier that I was getting a debug error when trying to run Pandora on my HTC Touch with Sprint. Even after restarting, didn't work. What I had to do was upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.1 downloaded from HTC's website. Hope this helps anyone else who may have a similar problem.

You should develop on application for the G1 phone from T-Mobile

I know Tom Conrad is both on record as really not caring at all about Android (and, presumably by extension, the T-Mobile G1) AND a somewhat softened "wait-and-see" stance for the platform, I hope many of us who have been using Pandora longer than our G1s can strengthen your resolve to come out with an Android app in the future. I've been using Pandora for quite a while now and have passed the bug on to all of my friends and their friends and their friends' friends. Currently, however, I'm stuck with Imeem and low-quality Shoutcast stations. Pandora has largely replaced my MP3 habit, but I feel as though I'm let down each time I plug the audio into my G1 and can't continue the smooth, rich transition of related music that Pandora provides.

I understand marketshare, carrier openness, and development roadblocks will all be determining factors for when the G1 and the emerging Android market might see a Pandora app. Nevertheless, consider this yet another nudge that the Android community would can't wait for a release.

Until then, thank you for the endless stream of tailored music when I'm in front of a computer. Your service has quickly replaced Amazon's viral recommendations for me to expand artist recognition and enrich my musical enjoyment.

Why does ATT make it free for iPhone users and not Windows mobile. Is it there way of saying sorry your iPhone has so many problems with it, and sorry you have to load slow down you system, resource hog iTunes.

Despite What some may thing, Apple is not that special. They do have good products in general, but F%&# the iPhone.

Let's not exclude windows mobile from the pandora swag.

Is support coming soon for the HTC Diamond / Touch Pro on Sprint? I am hoping the program is not overly different from the original HTC Touch so we could run it quickly. Ever since I saw the release to the old HTC Touch I keep praying the Diamond's support is right around the corner! :-D

I believe I have a new problem with Pandora on the HTC Touch (sprint). I successfully downloaded and installed the pandora program. I've started the program and went through the setup/create screens However, after I enter my desired user name, password, year of birth and zip code. I get an error message saying that "Pandora cannot find my user name or password"..which I don't have yet because I was setting up my account at the time. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting past this stage. Additionally, I went and created an account via the webpage using my laptop thinking that all I had to do was enter that information on my HTC and still I receive the same notification from pandora stating that my user name and password cannot be located. help....

Got the CAB file from XDA-developers site and installed it on my Verizon XV6800 (HTC Titan) running WM6.1 ROM upgrade...works fine, although seems as if exiting the program requires the 'exit' command via the Pandora interface as opposed to the WM 'X' in the upper right. No biggie.

Posted by: Villanite at January 20, 2009 08:57 PM

Hundreds of companies release 3rd party .cab files every day that install programs on my WM device that access the WWW. Time sync with government server, Web browsers, Email, Instant Messengers, Weather Programs, Stock applications, video games that keep track of my score online, and even stuff like bar code scanners. You act like you don't have the power to release a .cab of your own for free Pandora without ATT backing you that works on all WM devices. Some of these are even just random free programs done by people who have real jobs and do it for fun at home. I don't have to contact Micro$oft when i want to download Pandora for my home PC, so why should we have to go through ATT for your software?

Are these weekend programmers smarter than yours to be able to figure a way around ATT? Does ATT write your programs for you? Didn't think so... good job selling out to ATT.

@knightsbox @howtolosefans

Hi guys, obviously we're interested in getting Pandora everywhere-- to as many people as possible, on as many platforms as possible. But we have to do it in a way that allows us to build bridges instead of burning them.

Our service uses a lot of data, so we're not really in the same category as many other web-enabled applications. Of course we think letting Pandora play for free on every mobile device out there is the right way to proceed, but it takes time to convince others of this. Eventually we hope all the cellular carriers will open up to what their subscribers are saying about this issue.

I had the debug prob on my Touch (Sprint). Did the hard reset (reluctantly) as suggested by folks on the forum and by Pandora support. The app worked GREAT for a few days then one day... debug problems again. I REALLY like Pandora. I can not listen to it via my work computer but thought I could get back in the groove via my phone. I am not going to do a hard reset again. It takes me too long to set my phone back exactly the way I like it. I really wish there were a viable solution. I really enjoy the Pandora site and app. Will there be a fix soon ?

Posted by: Anthony at January 26, 2009 03:56 PM

It's very unfortunate that AT&T wields this much power over the Pandora project. I have a Palm Pro I bought outright and pay for the most expensive, unlimited data package that AT&T offers and I still can't have Pandora? Frustrating doesn't begin to describe my feelings on the matter.

AT&T isn't playing fair at all. Consider the bad PR if Pandora were to open up to Windows Mobile devices on AT&T, only to have AT&T shut it down. That would be PR suicide for AT&T. I doubt they would do it.

AT&T isn't your customer - the users of Pandora are. AT&T is simply an out-of-control behemoth that holds an unregulated, profit driven monopoly on wireless infrastructure. They should be ashamed of their practices.

I have the Verizon Samsung Omnia - your web site said unsuported but the devices that are led me to hunt down the cab file. I found it and it works like a charm, connected to my Motorola T505 BT to FM in my car....Pandora Rocks!!!!!

I feel bad for the WM programmers.....the resolutions on smartphones are getting higher and higher....VGA as in the Touch & Touch Pro are going to be the standard soon...

The image ads are totally fine with me but I implore you along with the others...please limit the audio ads....You should really be hitting the RIAA up for some money...Pandora is breaking me from my MP3 habit and I'm sure it's the same with many others.

I dont know if this is the right forum to post this or not but in my desperation, will try it out anyway. I have a Verizon Motorola Q9c and downloaded the Pandora app on it. It worked fine for a couple of days but today its not connecting to the service.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Posted by: Mihir at January 27, 2009 01:39 PM

You can stream it to your phone without having to wait 'til Pandora has your phone...

Download SKYFIRE for windows mobile...skyfire.com

Skyfire supports java and flash media...

use the Rss feed to access you station list...Use the Rss program that comes with windows mobile. add your station feed, as a new channel, which looks something like this...

http://feeds.pandora.com/feeds/people/hifrom25000ft/stations.xml

now select what station you'd like to listen to and skyfire will open your station if it's the default browser...

i have the HTC Touch Pro pandora does support it...Yet thru this method i'm able to listen to my radio.

Enjoy!

I got a new Fuze without even knowing that ATT and Pandora have teamed up on me to charge a nonsensical fee for radio. Totally disappointed at this move. What made Pandora awesome was its free-ness, and I cant get that on my windows mobile device. I refuse to believe that you cannot make a cab that simply uses the data plan. Shame on you. I can totally understand if u had ads displayed on the phone, even if they downloaded the crap out of my 3G "unlimited" plan. I am also ok with the relatively unobtrusive audio ads, but please make a god damn free cab for winMo devices.

Hi folks,

Ahem, ahem--reporting back for duty with you all...

@Mihir--someone from support will contact you ASAP.

@everyone who wants blood if their device isn't supported or if we don't offer a CAB file, etc.--I apologize to those who feel left in the rain with their Pandora-less devices. Contrary to popular opinion, it's nothing personal! Our development team is a small, hard-working band of folks with a never-ending to-do list of devices to reach and revisions to existing apps.

But getting Pandora to new devices doesn't completely hinge on them either (i.e. don't hassle them! for while they make it for you, it's not their responsibility to bring it to you). There are manufacturers and carriers involved with bringing Pandora to a new device and we make a point of working with them when we offer you this service. Relatively speaking, it's an unwieldy application and it really taxes your phone.

Again, sorry for the hold up. Hope everyone has a pleasant weekend--the Bay is looking beautiful lately...

Posted by: jdubs at February 3, 2009 05:33 PM

I can confirm that Pandora is working on the HTC Touch Diamond using the stock Sprint ROM. The layout of the display is all wrong since its a VGA device, but functionally everything is working fine. It took me a while to realize that you need to press Up or Down on the D-Pad to access the menus, even to quit the program - you can't close it from the Task Manager.

I'm glad that Windows Mobile users are finally being treated with the same respect as our iPhone brethren... just please don't let Tom announce a planned feature again until it's actually ready. The wait was killer.

You guys are doing a great job. I'm just excited that I get my free 1 day trial (HTC Fuze, AT&T-user) -- I'm a little saddened that I will have to pay for it, but I think I will wait it out until you strike a deal with AT&T -- they need to get their heads out of the ground and realize that there are other carriers out there.

Posted by: Suhartha at February 11, 2009 01:35 PM

I just have to put in my two cents. ATT can go to hell! If ATT wants to gouge their customers that aren't "cool" enough to use an iphone then I wont be doing business with them any longer. Pandora rocks! ATT sucks!

Posted by: Gitmo at February 11, 2009 01:59 PM

@Suhartha--It's AT&T that requires the subscription fee. We do petition for Pandora to be free but ultimately, the decision is in the hands of the carrier.

I just got the the HTC Fuze which pretty much rocks once you get all the AT&T stuff off of it. I don't do Apple.
Loaded Pandora today and WHAT?! MORE MONEY!? It didn't even let me test the trial version. JEEZ...I've even got a full freaking data plan!

This sort of misses the point of Windows Mobile. I mean, it's a shared platform. Yes there are different devices with different form factors but you shouldn't need to have a different client for different devices on different carriers. Just release one smartphone version for WM 5/6 and one PocketPC version for 5/6 and you'll have all the devices covered at once. I don't get why you're talking to the carriers at all. The only thing they can possibly do is make the user experience worse. This is like asking Comcast if it is ok if you release a browser client that'll work on my Lenovo laptop.

Hi folks,

The short (and presumably unsatisfying) answer for why Pandora is not available for X, Y, Z phone yet is that we don't have anything ready to release for that phone yet. And we don't want to make any empty promises until we're ready to release something.

Pandora is a relatively small company with a huge listener base; we have to fight battles (like the one currently being waged for royalty rates in Congress) and meet goals (like making Pandora available for new platforms), one at a time. The last year or two has seen a proliferation of smart phones and on our end, it's not that easy to keep up! We're working on it though...

Thanks folks for your support and understanding,
A

Posted by: NanoQ at March 5, 2009 04:42 PM

AT&T just lost some major cool points!
Sprint made them look like chumps.
I was thinking about getting the epix... but now I might just get the instinct... argh!

Another long-time Pandora listener and fan casting a hopeful nod for an Android-compatible Pandora app. I'm currently in the market for a new device (and possibly, carrier). I'd have popped for the G1 in an instant if there'd been a Pandora app available. In fact, Pandora is one of the VERY few services/applications that are sufficiently important to me to seriously influence a hardware purchase decision. It's just that awesome.

For the record, guys, you're doing a great job. You continue to provide a music discovery and enjoyment experience absolutely second to none, even in the face of some not-insubstantial adversity. And what's more, you're clearly dedicated to ensuring that your fans have the widest possible array of choices and outlets for that experience. Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Posted by: Derrick at March 9, 2009 02:29 PM

Allow me to throw another bone for the G1... just bought one... brought it home... and, alas... it is not Pandora compatible. PLEASE!!!!!!!!! How long must we wait???? :(

Posted by: meely at March 15, 2009 04:42 PM

"Pandora is a relatively small company with a huge listener base; we have to fight battles (like the one currently being waged for royalty rates in Congress) and meet goals (like making Pandora available for new platforms), one at a time. The last year or two has seen a proliferation of smart phones and on our end, it's not that easy to keep up! We're working on it though..."

May I suggest you publish and API or an SDK and let the community fill in the holes? I'm sure apps would start to pop up quickly.

Posted by: Ryan at March 17, 2009 07:11 PM

@meely--All I can say is be patient. We don't rush these things as we want to be able to offer a great product that is suited to each individual phone. I know some folks think we're leaving them in the dust but it really just takes time to get the proper thing for all these separate phones.

@Ryan--At this time, we feel pretty strongly about releasing a stellar app for each phone. No/minimal bugs, tailored to each UI, etc.

I have been waiting patiently for Pandora to be available on Blackberry...and finally it is!!! My hopes were crushed when you don't have it on T-Mobile!!! :( I have been a long time Pandora user...How long must I wait?? :( :( :(

How hard is it to make a a windows mobile application, that is free of carrier dependancy?! obiviously you can, because its out on other windows mobile devices. what it boils down to is poor business decisions. The Iphone got an app almost from the getgo, and now even the Blackberry has one.

Just making another plea for Pandora & G1... pleeeease.

Posted by: Kim at April 2, 2009 08:41 AM

I am very disappointed that you guys didn't make windows mobile app that would work on all WM phones and that everyone could download from this website. All other apps for WM are working with all phones and devices that runs WM so I don't understand why you have to have different version for different phones if they all running WM. I have HTC Fuse and even though i love pandora, I really don't feel like paying additional 9 bucks if I'm already paying 30 bucks for unlimited internet in ATT.

Please do something about it

Posted by: Peter at April 10, 2009 01:04 PM

@Peter--Unfortunately, each phone needs its own separate build. We can't assure that Pandora will work effectively with a uniform app for all phones. We're working on getting it right for every WinMo phone we present.

HTC PPC 6800 on Alltel here. Same exact hardware as the HTC Mogul and I can't install it, says my device is not supported. Come on, this is just silly.

Posted by: Brian at April 18, 2009 08:18 PM

I understand that it is imperative for Pandora to have a bug-free application for every device. However, many are looking elsewhere for an application that is supported on their NEW devices. I personally have a Sprint Touch Pro and have been waiting over 6 months now for Pandora to support this device. By the time it is supported, I will be switching to the Palm Pre. I'm guessing I will then have to wait another 6 months to a year for it to be supported.

Long story short, it would be in everyone's best interest if Pandora could start working with the carriers and device manufacturers prior to the devices launching. If this is done, Pandora wouldnt be spending valuable time writing programs for extremely outdated devices. Thank you for listening.

Posted by: Brant at April 21, 2009 06:15 PM

>How hard is it to make a a windows mobile application, that is free of carrier dependency?

It's not. See below.

>Unfortunately, each phone needs its own separate build.

What a load of horse hockey!

Using that logic you couldn't run any program on a computer until you had a build for every manufacture.

You are building for platforms (Windows Mobile, BB, Android, etc) not individual phones. Yes I write software. Including Windows mobile programs and I have yet to change a build for different phones other than screen size but that can be detected and programmed as required.

If your getting support from AT&T (Part of the $9/month in addition to the $30/month "Unlimited" internet) then just say so. I could understand it better, we all need to eat.

But really why would I want to pay $9/month when I can cut out the middle man and get a subscription for $3/month ($36/yr)? That's right, their AT&T and can do anything they want.

It looks like I will have to find another mobile net radio to listen to at AT&T cut my service to Pandora today. Internet, email just fine. Pandora, "We are experiencing technical problems. Try again later" message. Maybe back to LastFM.

Posted by: AppDev at April 22, 2009 06:52 PM

So I have to agree with Brian. Pandora is the first application that I have seen for Windows Mobile that is completely dependent to the AT&T service along with being specific to a single Windows Mobile Device. As Brant, I have programmed for Windows Mobile Devices, and Used the following template in the programming structure:

* Programmed the service to be a stremaing service that provides the data to a player.
* Create a playing object within the software that passes the information from the player to the sound driver of the device (how this information is passed is based on programming language and OS)
* Create a control shell that manages the playing service in the OS

Seeing as Windows Mobile is based on the principles of OOP, and that all Windows Mobile devices use the same drivers and technologies, minus the fact that some have drivers for touch screens, everything else is built into the OS. Sound card, flipping technologies for slide out keyboards, all of that is integrated into the OS. Some might have slight issues, but nothing that should prevent the insallation of the software, nor hinder the users use of the software.

As a Fuze owner and newly introduced Pandora fan (I WILL be a $36/year subscriber), Id like to take a different approach to this problem.

Pandora has made their position clear they dont want to piss off ATT and bypass ATTs money making scheme to charge for yet another otherwise free app (read: Telenav vs. Google Maps or Hulu vs. MobiTV as good examples). I understand thatpart of Pandoras model to sustain itself is by bundling it with ATT apps.

The question I have then is what is the amount that Pandora gets from ATT over the life of the Pandora subscription? I would imagine Pandora gets a monthly cut of the action (maybe $1-2 tops) per subscriber and possibly a marginal payment for the initial bundling of the app itself. Since my unlimited service is no different than an iPhone users AND they are not allocating anymore bandwidth to me based on this subscription than I would get without it (which shoots the whole theory that Pandora users are somehow paying for additional bandwidth for just this app) then I propose allowing me to pay Pandora directly.

Thats right.for that same $1-2 per month I would happily pay Pandora directly for THEIR contributions. ATT is nothing more than a distribution mechanism herethey wont field calls about Pandora, they arent supporting it.just milking it for what Im guessing is $6-7 profit each month over a pipe that is NOT extended by virtue of said subscriptions. So if thats the case, then give me the OPTION of paying the company directly. I can stomach $1-2/month in addition to my $36 annual contribution (or better yet make a PC/phone bundle price) for a WM version for my Fuze. In addition, please consider assisting your users in filing a petition against ATT for what would surely be considered biased and unfair practices by the FCC for content regulation and segregation (iPhone get the service and I don't???). While you may not want to jeopardize your ATT subsidies, I can assure you that the upside for potential profits is much higher when siding with your customers in the long term.

Please explain why the HTC Mogul for SPrint is compatible but the HTC PPC 6800 from Alltel is not? They are the same phone, the only difference being the carrier and branding. sooo? um what gives?

Posted by: Asdf at May 27, 2009 08:13 PM

I'm honestly curious as to why they have not added the Touch Pro to the supported list. They have a version for the AT&T Fuze, which is just the AT&T-branded Touch Pro, so they obviously have a VGA version. Then again, if the version for the Fuze is purposely crippled so the AT&T users have to pay the extra fee, AT&T may not want them releasing an un-crippled version for the same hardware.

Guys, you must tired of fielding all of these requests for specific phone types. We know there is no way you can develop and test every phone out there ... so let the open source community help! Publish an API and let us build our own apps to access your service. You can still charge a monthly fee for access, and you'll have a much bigger potential user base. The open source projects out there right now are all hacks built on top of your flash player and that's crazy. Just give us a set of web services, and you'll never have to field another "my device please" request again.

Posted by: todd at June 15, 2009 08:33 PM

I've been reading this forum, month after month after month, and I continue to hear the exact same thing from Pandora... COMING SOON. How about giving us a date so that we can hold you true to a deadline! Instead of losing customers that get fed up with waiting month after month! I'm not going to make it much longer! I'm going to switch to last.fm soon, as almost everyone I know is doing because you won't get your apps out!

It is obvious, Pandora has fallen subject to some type of influence... somebody somewhere with money is telling them to not release any further WinMo apps because the carriers don't want to deal with the increased load on their network!

Posted by: John Berry at June 17, 2009 09:52 AM

Honestly if people want to pay for music why would they not get sirius or an actual subscription service pandora is by no means what so ever worth paying 96/year..

The funniest part is that on the page that you advertise for windows mobile, you call pandora a free program.. Well officialy you can no longer do that. I will spread to every single user that i see that pandora is not a free service.. even though you could have ad supported the winmo version too, you choose to screw over the very people that put you in a position to get your foot in the door with carriers like at& t in the first place.. shame on your company and shame on you guys for trying to justify these prejudice and downright sleezy business practices.

Here's what's gonna happen.. You're going to try and keep bending over real people so you can side with at&t and other "players" in the group that thinks control to content is king. very soon you'll find that a free player will pop up to replace you.. "what, it wasn't our slick app and crude negotiating skills with at&t" "It wasn't our ability to divide the amount of money we're screwing you by the days in the year to make it look smaller." no it was the free access to content that made the difference. That's right content is king.

I'll guess ill go try out last.fm or look into a subscription from a real content provider.. you know sirius has over 200 stations now with no commercials and had a pretty solid WinMo app over a year ago that works on any windows mobile device...

Removed Pandora mobile from my AT&T phone. I won't pay $9/month to AT&T for a server I should get for free with unlimited data.

Should I pay $9/month for every site I want to visit? What's next, $9/month for youtube?

I just went from a blackberry 8900 to the touch pro 2 on t-mobile's network. My carrier does not restrict what sites and charge us we have unlimited data. Why don't you have support for more phones. I liked pandora was awesome app but now i'm stuck without it thankgod for shoutcast servers might not offer to tailor stations to my needs. But hey i can listen to music.

Okay guys + girls at Pandora. Im not one to complain or even blog and I know you'all get a lot of this but it's become very serious at this point.

You say you support WM Devices, but I wholeheartedly disagree. You supported WM devices 2 years ago when the WM devices you have software for actually came out. Since then you've cmoe out with software for the Iphone, Android, The Palm Pre, and the Blackberry Bold which are all fairly new devices, some of which have come out even AFTER say the Touch Pro or Diamond. WHAT YOU GUYS DEAL?? Again, I'm not one to complain, especially for something thats free. But this is getting quite rediculous. The Touch Pro 2 and Diamond Pro 2 are now out and you don't even have the software for the old versions of the phone.

Word of advice Pandora, learn from your predecessors. Catchup now while you can or you'll be left behind. Feel free to answer these concerns if indeed you'all pay attention to your blogs.

Please please please make a version for the htc ozone. I really wanna get that phone instead of a blackberry, but there's no official release for it yet. :(

I subscribe to the Pandora One service and was bummed out when I found that I couldn't get Pandora on my new T-Mobile Dash 3G (HTC Snap). I realize that it's a tad bit difficult to support EVERY device out there but the least we could do is see a mobile version of the Pandora Web platform for use on our phones. Is that at all possible?

Samsung Saga is technically the i770; its extremely similar to the i760, which is supported. Can't you just tweak it a little bit, please?

After trading my Blackberry for a Windows Mobile phone, I learned the hard way that smartphones are no fun without Pandora! Please support HTC Ozone!!! I have a paid subscription to Pandora, and now I can't use it while I stroll the streets of NY!!!

Helllp!!!

Posted by: Jackie Bennett at October 13, 2009 08:57 AM

Support the HTC ozone already. The CAB from the q9c almost works flawlessly, It just has some wierd 'reconnecting' issue. But you already know this. It's been how many months? I traded my q9c for the ozone. Now Im stuck without Pandora. I'm ready to give up. I dont even use the regular site anymore. Why view your ads if you've given up on my platform? (and you have, You support 4 windows mobile devices, all of which are antiquated and all but obsolete). Thanks.

HTC Touch Pro 2 support please.

Posted by: Sharon at October 16, 2009 07:59 PM

I upgraded to a Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2 yesterday & lost Pandora.

PLEASE add my device.... I really MISS my music!

Posted by: ron at October 17, 2009 02:26 PM

So I switched from a Sprint Mogul to a Verizon Imagio, a pretty neat multimedia world phone. So you don't support my phone.

Well, I installed the Mogul app. It works, though the text is tiny and it isn't aligned right.

I have to ask: why are you supporting individual WinMo devices instead of just supporting Windows Mobile? It's obvious the substructure of the program ports fine. I mean, every other program from my Mogul displays fine.

Can't you guys just come clean and tell us why you take this piecemeal approach? If it's business reasons, we'd be more patient.

Posted by: Frankenbike at October 21, 2009 03:47 PM

Pandora would have alot more users if they added support for more windows mobile phones, but since they dont give HTCRadio.com a try. They offer streaming radio broadcasts in a wide variety of genres. Until Pandora offers something for my touch pro, I am avoiding them.
