Pandora Goes To Hollywood: Making Music For Movies

Ben PachecoThink about your favorite movies.

Star Wars.

Edward Scissorhands.

Citizen Kane.

The Incredibles.

What would those movies be without the music that John Williams, Danny Elfman, Bernard Herrmann and Michael Giacchino composed for them?

Here's a video we made about the craft of composing for film.

Tim Westergren's whole concept for the Music Genome Project came out of the years he spent as a film composer, actually. The challenges he faced while getting directors to articulate their musical requests led him to think about a better way to make recommendations...
hence Pandora. But he can talk more about that.

Since we're on the topic, what is your favorite film score? Mine is Ennio Morricone's score for The Mission.

Thanks for watching,
Kevin

I love the new North Face advertising shell on Pandora's homepage! Great graphics... Kudos to you for getting great advertisers.

i am somewhat ashamed to admit that it is Moulin Rouge. LOL

Posted by: fordmontgomery at November 19, 2008 06:38 PM

Where's the shame in that? No shame!

Posted by: Kevin Seal at November 19, 2008 06:53 PM

my friends think i look at nothing but action flicks, frat comedies, etc. they would probably have heart attacks if they knew i even have a copy of the Moulin Rouge CD.
you are correct with there being no shame. thanks for the comment back.

I'm a big fan of removing the guilt from so-called guilty pleasures. Why guilt? Why shame?

Thanks, Ford.

Who else? What film scores are you into?

Posted by: Kevin Seal at November 19, 2008 07:06 PM

The first time I saw "Planet of the Apes" at 12, I was mystified by the unusual and tense music at the beginning of the film. I wouldn't say its my favorite, but its probably the most distinctive.

You can't go past the classics like Star Wars... but more recently I love the atonal drones in movies like The Dark Knight (technically it's the Joker's theme) and There Will Be Blood. They're just so intense.

Hi, I have a question. Can I update my gtalk status with the song being played in pandora?

Thanks

Posted by: Steve at November 20, 2008 07:50 AM

Pandora.com is an awesome site. I love it and I tell people about the site all the time.

I'm also kind of a Facebook addict and I was thinking that it would be nice, if I heard a song I liked on Pandora, to be able to click on a link or a button on Pandora.com to post the song information and/or link to Facebook.

It would be good marketing for Pandora and it would be convenient for users of both services.

Just a thought.

Regards,

David Flanagan

I just wanted to add the score for "Alien" (as composed by Jerry Goldsmith, creator of "Planet of the Apes" and countless other scores that you don't know you love) and "Mulholland Dr."

Cheers,
A

Hey Steve - it's currently not possible to update your gtalk status with your Pandora status automatically. Thanks for the suggestion!

David -
Thanks! We do have a Facebook app, as you may already know. There isn't a "post this song" button, but it does display your Pandora stations and bookmarks on your Facebook page.

You can find it here: http://apps.facebook.com/pandora/

If you have any troubles or questions, just email pandora-support@pandora.com.

Thanks!
Lucia

Favorite film scores? So many, but probably a tie between Ennio Morricone's score for "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" and Joe Hisaishi's for "Howl's Moving Castle."

Posted by: Tim at November 20, 2008 04:16 PM

My favorite was The Shawshank Redemption. Thomas Newman. It's also my favorite movie, but the music is absolutely sublime.

Ennio Morricone -- Once Upon a Time in the West (Charles Bronson, Jason Robards)...sends a chill up and down my spine every time I hear it.

Yada yada...I've just been blessed with the god known as Arbitron. Imagine thier shock when they find out that I listen to Pandora multiple hours a day. They didn't even have a box to check for "internet radio". Poor Sean Hannity. Soon to be replaced by CHOSEN sounds. Stay tuned. I'm drunk.

Another honorable mention is the soundtrack to "The Man From Snowy River". I think I've memorized the score by now.

Posted by: Jesse at November 23, 2008 06:41 AM

i love pandora, but recently i have been having a problem with it. the music often cuts out, stops playing for an extended period of time, and songs end before they are supposed to. i thought at first it might be some interference due to other programs or websites, but the problem persists even when nothing else is running. it happens quite frequently. do you know what the problem might be?

Last of the Mohicans, Jurrasic Park, Dragonheart, Gladiator

Posted by: joanne at November 24, 2008 11:09 AM

Hi, Jake -- I'll get our great support team (pandora-support@pandora) in touch with you. If you ever have technical issues, writing to them directly is the fastest way to address those problems.

Jesse -- I don't think I've ever seen Man From Snowy River! I'll have to add that to my queue.

Joanne -- Oh yeah, Last of the Mohicans has a great score. I'd forgotten about that one. Jurassic Park is by John Williams, the modern master. Hard to find any John Williams score that isn't epic, beautiful and melodic.

Posted by: Kevin Seal at November 24, 2008 12:39 PM

I would agree with Jake, The Last of the Mohicans had one of the best musical scores that I have ever heard.

Posted by: Houston Electrician at November 26, 2008 07:20 AM

Blade Runner is a score that has the spine-tingling effect on me.

Vangelis is a genius.

Posted by: Jeff Jones at December 2, 2008 12:47 PM

Vangelis is great, agreed.

Have you ever heard the band Vangelis was in before he started doing film scores? He was in a progressive rock band called "Aphrodite's Child" back in the late '60s and early '70s, based in Greece. So great:

Back then, Vangelis went by his full name: Vangelis Papathanassiou.

I didn't realize when I got into Pandora that it was really just for advertising. I followed every direction and yet when I clicked on play I got a list of products I could purchase. Free music was never a part of what I thought Pandora was for.

love the Kundun sound track

Posted by: Karen at December 9, 2008 05:26 PM

also sound track for The Hours.

Posted by: Karen at December 9, 2008 05:27 PM

Thanks, Karen. Good calls, both.

Kundun and the Hours = both by Philip Glass.

His score for Koyaanisqatsi is my favorite Glass film work.

Posted by: ALICIA at December 9, 2008 06:59 PM

Dude, just reading the blog and your reference of "the Mission" score and you are right on the money! Also the movie that made me a DiNiro fan. Epic in every way.
