Great Venues: The Knitting Factory, New York

Knitting FactoryThis week is the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, a great festival that spans multiple boroughs and features a wide range of independent music.

We visited the Knitting Factory during CMJ, and were amazed at how smoothly their ship sailed. With three stages on three floors, a single night's entertainment might feature as many as 25 bands, all loading in and out through a single door.

In honor of this week's CMJ, part of which takes place on the Knitting Factory's multiple stages, here is a look at the ways in which the Knit has brought groundbreaking music to audiences for 20 years. From Annie Clark (pictured at left) to John Zorn, the bounty has been rich.

Hello !

That's a very nice picture, the bridge and the reflex of the sun on the water.
That place ' Knitting Factory ' looks great. I never been in NY...maybe I should go there and ask for a bartending job at that place :).

I wanted to share with all you a song/video that has nothing to do with this but its making me nostalgic.... its for my National Team... :)

Interesting video on The Knitting Factory. I've seen tons of really small bands play there and get a lot of recognition after. My cousin even opened at The Knitting Factory in NY for Ghostface Killah, from Wu-Tang Clan. It only takes a few people that are really into your music and a good performance at The Knitting Factory to really help push your career further.

Hi, JenFin -- That's one of the very cool things about the Knitting Factory. The rooms are small enough that a few interested parties can transform the whole spaces.

Good luck with the job search, Morphita!

Oh no! I did not realize this! : (

Tim, what can we do as customers though to continue to support Pandora and your staff. There are so many of us who enjoy Pandora and we want to see it's success.

I am a paid customer to www.last.fm but I don't know if that benefits pandora.com?!

I am praying better times will come! I know they will.

Big hugs to Pandora.com and all its listeners!

Next time I'm back home. I'm going to have to check this place out

Posted by: Roland at October 28, 2008 04:14 PM

Hi, 2Serenity,

Last.fm and Pandora are not related to each other, and are completely separate entities.

Thank you for the well-wishes, though.

And Roland, definitely check out the Knitting Factory. It's the kind of place that you can wander into on any given night, and since there's so much variety going on between the three stages, you're bound to stumble upon something you enjoy.

I am saddened that something as wonderful as Pandora ever has to let anyone go because it is, to me, the best value I can ever imagine.

If someone will hook up a paypal thingy here I will gladly pay a subscription fee for it. And if you do not want to ask everyone to do that, fine, make it voluntary. But I think it is the best thing I can find on the internet.

Regards,

Darryl

I liked listening to your music until I pulled the website up today and found a picture of Obama there. Why do businesses have to associate themselves with one party or another?

Posted by: Deb at November 4, 2008 09:40 AM

Hi, Deb,

The Obama campaign purchased advertising time on our site, much as they did on television networks. We tried to get the McCain campaign to advertise with us as well, but they declined. Pandora was not advocating for one side or the other, merely selling ad space without bias or preference to either side.

Hi, Frank and Darryl146,

Thanks for saying that! Great that you're liking Pandora. If you would like to pay for a subscription, here's how you can:

Pandora,

I too am a huge fan. I hate my own music collection now and am bored with my iPod. It is a drag that you had to lay off people. However, rather than blame it on the times or try to change your model to get listeners to subsidize, which will never be a long term solution (otherwise - you would have used that model in the 1st place)- take a look at your business model and look to it for solutions. Your progress with iPhones and cellular in general is genius - too expensive in my mind, because us consumers get nickel & dimed to death with monthly charges (phones, satellite, cable, etc). As the great Yoda once said,"Fear is the path to the Dark Side." Dont let your fear get in the way of what you are trying to accomplish - advertising is still the answer - how can you get us to see more ads, see them on cell phones....? What if as part of membership we all agreed to receive an email from Pandora every day with a summary or highlights and links to all your paid advertisers...? Just a thought - but I must admit I do not like the pressure pay by turning off my music every 15 minutes. I am not the answer, nor is my $36. You know that is a short term bandaid and probably cannabalistic to your core business - dont piss of your customers (that sounds harsh, and of course I am not pissed off, I just think that your are grasping with that as a solution). Good luck. I have faith that you guys will figure this out - you have a smart Board. If I can be of any help strategically, feel free to contact by email.

Regards,

R

The economy will shape up soon. It may take Obama a term or two, yet a change for the better is soon to come. Your former employees will be alright. Life is difficult. Business is more difficult. You seem like a great person. In Business people do things without a conscious. Its a good thing that you actually are giving those you had to let go some space in your brain. They'll be blessed and you will as well.

Thanks for the comments, people!

@ mthrash - if you donate at least $10 to one of our music education philanthropic causes, you'll get a free Pandora poster!
(if you donate $20, you get all three posters!)

It's rather nice to format my own intrest in music, but quite a nusence to have it shut down so often that I need to click it on constently just to listen in another room from my pc. Yes that was a runon sentence.
