Glitches, Whirrs, Skronks, Scrapes, Purrs and Screeches
Fans of electronic music, here's a show for you: BlipVert (left) comes into the studio to show how he cuts up samples to make fractured, adventurous compositions in the style of Aphex Twin, Autechre or Squarepusher. We talk about ambient music, vocal effects, tape splicing, and some of the crazy electronic toys that help scramble and twist sounds on stage. Here's that show.
On our video page this week, a show all about Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a stunningly gorgeous outdoor venue. See the stage where Bono waved the white flag and carried the torch in U2's Under A Blood Red Sky, and check out live footage from Augustana, the John Butler Trio, Leftover Salmon and more.
Enjoy,
Kevin

GREAT podcast guys!
I am an IDM junkie, spending many hours transcribing the actually drum parts on Squarpusher and Aphex Twin records then learning to play them live.
Will sits next to me at Pandora and I grabbed the BlipVert cd off the shelve to analyze, and did not know Will was BlipVert, and a few minutes into my analysis I exclaimed to him I was analyze this amazing IDM record and he should check it out. To which he replied, "I know, I wrote it."

Greetings,
I am so impressed with Pandora. As a pastor, I can count on you guys to realize my druthers.
Anyway, I am having the fair head of Obama coming on my computer daily, hourly, minute-by-minute. Though my children (ages 27-31), will be voting for him, I will not. I have contacted the RNC and encouraged them to put advertisements on there as well. It is absolutely your freedom to put whoever, but it sort of makes me feel like minimizing your program on my computer because of the strong images.
Having said that, I am a hugely happy camper with what you do. I have purchased an incredible amount of music that I never would have known about except through your service. I hope you get some sort of royalties for that!!
sincerely blessed by your program and sincerely one of your fans who passes on the word regularly,
Dr. Angus McDonald

Thanks for creating pandora! Check out Angelman's Syndrome - make people aware.

Thanks, Jess and Jeff. (Jeff, I was similarly taken aback by the BlipVert CD when I first heard it -- quite great tracks he's built on there.)
Hi, Dr. Angus and Wayne,
Please understand that Pandora needs advertising dollars to survive; ad money is the only way we're able to afford the costs of providing the service. Political ads, while they might not be in agreement with your opinions, do not violate any of our guidelines for decency or propriety.
We have invited the McCain campaign and the RNC to advertise with us as well, and will gladly accept their ads on Pandora.

I love this site. And I just make the IE window only the size of the currently playing song so all the frames and ads around the Play/Pause, Next Song, CD Image area aren't visible. =)
I wouldn't want them to change anything because this is a free service long overdue. Ads just keep the laymakers off peoples backs because I'm sure Pandora can't just play this music for free!??
Can you?? =b
The music selection is awesome. And I've only tried the genres I'm interested in. I haven't tried listening to new styles yet... sort of afraid that I might get hooked! ^^
Just wish that songs that are thumbed-up in one station don't appear in another, because I have to keep moving them back to that station...
You should also be able to create a station based on the musical characteristics of the style of music you want to hear. Just like the way Pandora chooses music based on your Yays and Nays. As in, I go to edit my station setup and can choose a configuration of drums/percussions, strings, industrial ambience or something with heavy or deep vocals... and see what comes up. =)
Keep it rollin' baby... love this place.

Hello,
I discover your blog with a research on the radio.
I use it to announce you the arrival of the new website of RCM (Small French local radio).
I also offer you to listen to us ( www.rcmlaradio.fr a 'good morning' on Tchat will please us).
Excuse me for bad English, it is not my native language.

I think Pandora's great. Thanks for Faith Hill radio and the associated artists. You hit it right on the head.
By the way, I saw someone ask you to take O'Bama off their screen. You can add him to mine! Thanks

Pandora, you are just the greatest.
I have read of your woes caused by the evil giant RIAA - but I'm rooting for you!!

Thanks, guys! Your support is absolutely crucial for us, and we're tremendously appreciative that you are enjoying the Pandora service and telling other people about it.
Michael -- cool that Faith Hill Radio is working well for you.
RichPea -- We cannot play this music for free. This is why we have advertising on the site. Pandora has paid millions of dollars in licensing fees to the musicians you're hearing, not to mention millions in server space, streaming fees, and other technical costs.
It is true that the tuning choices you make (thumbs up, thumbs down, added seeds, etc.) only change that particular station.
I like your suggestion of station-building based on musical characteristics. Cool idea, and something we can keep in mind for future development.
Thanks for listening, and thanks for the feedback -- we love reading what you have to say about your stations and the music you're hearing on Pandora.

No prob! I would love to have freedom in setting up stations based only on musical characteristics instead of actual musicians, allowing for new artists to be heard.
I also love the fact that you have Daniel Castro in this genome listing. He is a Sacramento native here in CA and I see him regularly whenever he comes to town. So awesome that I found him on Pandora, in the Blues style music. Nice... especially since he will never sign with the big labels, because he wants to have freedom in how he handles his own CD's and releases in the local Central Valley area.
I just can't find anything wrong with this place!
I hope Pandora stays online for a looong long time. So great to have variety in music playing when I'm doing things around the house or whatnot, and I don't have to worry about turning the commercials down, because none pop on, telling us to help donate to keep the streaming online (ahem... like DI radio). You just feed us what we crave and only want us to spread the word about who and what Pandora is.
Much thanks...

You rock, RichPea!
That's great that Daniel Castro showed up on your station. I will keep him on my radar of blues artists to check out in Northern CA.
If you're into blues, you should check out this week's episode of the Pandora Video Series, which takes place at Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago:

Thanks for listening, and for the well-wishes. What you have to say means a lot to us.
