Pandora on the iPhone & Apple Store Madness

As you now know, you can get Pandora on your iPhone. Our staff is of course very excited about this, and so are music fans!

Pandora staff fanned out to several Apple Stores around the country last night and early this morning to meet Pandora fans, demo Pandora on the iPhone, and....stand in line. Reports are that hundreds of iPhone fans queued up outside Apple Stores from very early in the morning, some even camping out overnight to be the first to get the new iPhones.

I'll let the pictures tell the story...

Damn, I have been on pandora for years but im a big black berry/tmobile fan. WHAT TO DO!?

I wasn't even considering the iPhone until now.

Prime example of how great Pandora is.

1. Congrats on your deal with Apple! I've been listening since '06 and you all seem to improve on a monthly basis.

2. Must. Have. Hat. Please say they're for sale.

Pandora for iPhone is so awesome. I've been listening for a whole day!

Posted by: Ming at July 11, 2008 08:31 PM

Very, very cool. I hadn't tried Pandora before (that I recall), saw the app, and have been using this as my radio station since last night. Huge kudos, I'm hooked to both Pandora in general and the iPhone app.

Pandora + Apple= Awesome
I'd love to see Pandora+ Apple+ Myspace

Posted by: Chris at July 12, 2008 11:43 AM

Rob's right? Where can I get the hat? Or the "thumbs-up" t-shirt? Way cool!

Posted by: Todd at July 12, 2008 12:22 PM

I downloaded the pandora software for my iPhone and it is indeed very cool. However, I have a few pieces of feedback about some areas where you could improve the usability of the application.

I'm sure some of this may be due to the limitations of the iPhone SDK, but I think they are important enough that you should pester apple to fix them.

1. The first issue is that, unlike the IPod application, the pandora radio application will not play in the background. This means, for example, that if I want to check email, send a text message, or browse the web that I have to stop listening to music. That kind of sucks. I imagine that this may be a limitation of the iPhone OS because they don't want a bunch of programs running in the background sucking up battery life. However, I think they could change it to enable one "audio player" application to be resident in the background while I do other things. You should push apple to make that change if you can. I might be able to accept that the music will stop if I do other things if it meant that when I came back into the app I could resume listening to the song I was listening to when I quit, at the spot where I was when I quit. Howevever, what happens now is that when I go back into the application it picks a different song. That is kind of frustrating, particularly becuase Pandora often plays really cool music I've never heard before. If that happens and I accidentally hit the home button, then that song is lost forever. I can't finish listening to it, and I have no idea what it's called. That kind of sucks.

2. The second issue is the behavior of the button the head phones. Normally, hitting the button the head phones will cause the ipod music to play or pause. This has gotten me used to hitting the button on the head phones any time I want to pause the music and is really convient. If I hit the button on the head phones the pandora music stops playing and the ipod music starts playing. It would be really great if you could get the app to use the head phone button to play and pause the music.

I really digg pandora but I can never find any Brazilian Funk or K Pop, why is that

Posted by: Tonio at July 12, 2008 04:05 PM

Todd - Thanks for the feedback!

1) You're correct, this is a limitation imposed on all apps on the iPhone. This may (hopefully) change in the future, but for now Pandora is not allowed to run in the background

2) I'll pass this along to our engineers and hopefully they can consider adding this feature in the future.

Tonio - Yes, right now our collection is very US-oriented, though we're making strides to improve that. We're working hard to increase our World music collection right now, and hopefully with that will come a much better selection of Brazilian and Asian music. Thanks for posting!

Is there any way to log into a different account after the initial setup? Maybe I am just missing the option. That way when friends are using my iPod they can listen to their own stations.

Posted by: John at July 12, 2008 08:29 PM

Is there any hopes for a WinMo version? I love Pandora Radio, and I really want a nice mobile version for WinMo. I'm not of any official/unoffical Pandora apps. for Windows Mobile, so I'm really hoping you guys work on one.

The iPhone version looks nice by the way. I'm just crossing my fingers for a good Pandora app. to hit Windows Mobile sometime.

i'm new to pandora radio a week or so , so far i'm not very impressed. thier slogan " only the music you (i) want to hear " right, i type in a group/artiss and a name of a song it plays everything but what i request and/or want to hear.am i doing something wrong?????

Posted by: jeffrey at July 13, 2008 06:44 AM

when I add music to the station I WANT TO HEAR THE SONG I ENTER, now or very soon. the message says you will add similar songs....so I have to name a song thats similar to get the song I really want to hear and hope for the best?????
Don't get me wrong I love what you got.......but I am a fixer and I will let you know when you need to fix it....got it get it digg it?(this is the new catch phrase) use it & u 2 will b cool!

PS it can be boxed (digg it got it get it!, get it digg it got it....etc)use it as a question, an answer, or a statement.....

great app for the iPhone. I've spent the last 3 days creating dozens of stations. I'd like to delete some of the stations, though. I can't do it from the iPhone app and I can't get to the pandora website from the iPhone because it always takes me to the "download itune app" page. Any suggestions?

Posted by: matt at July 13, 2008 11:18 AM

Thanks for the iPhone app. I was tempted to get the 3G phone, but our "older" models are working JUST fine right now, so why go crazy (I'll wait for the next iteration). I am SO GLAD to see PANDORA working on EDGE network so well. Far better than AOL's, which is not too bad but too many commercial stations I already get on my radio and in the car. This is far better, and extends the music capabilites well.

Tell people that the side button DOES work to increase volume..worked for me anyway, and it seems people are saying it doesn't (maybe not on the 3G phone?).

Keep up the good work. As a music teacher in NYC, I am thrilled to see these kinds of well thought out apps I can tell my kids about.

Posted by: Julisu at July 13, 2008 12:23 PM

John - The only way to sign into different accounts is to delete the app and reinstall it. Then, just choose the "I have an account" option and sign in as that person. It's not ideal, but the installation process doesn't take very long at all, so hopefully you can still sign in and out easily.

matt - You can delete stations on your station list on the iPhone. Just swipe across the station name left to right, and a red X will pop up, allowing you to delete that station.

Julisu - Thanks for pointing this out. The side bar volume (the hard keys) does work to control the volume, but there is a known bug that does not update the software volume bar. Because of this, we strongly recommend that listeners try to only use the software volume control. But you're correct, the side bar volume should always work as well, just that the screen's volume will not update.

Posted by: Johnny at July 13, 2008 12:41 PM

This is probably one of best applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch that I've seen so far. Great work!

I know you can organize your stations online by the name of the station. Any plans to add that capability to the iPhone/iPod Touch version?

Posted by: John at July 13, 2008 07:45 PM

I have been a paid subscriber to Pandora for many years now and I am the owner of an original iPhone. I updated the software and downloaded a few apps. I was so excited to see the Pandora app. I tested it out at home on my wifi network and it worked great. But what about out in the wild on Edge? I wasn't expected too much, but to my surprise it worked superbly on the Edge network. How cool is that?

I agree with Todd's first comment on letting Pandora play in the background. I have a different experience with the button on the iPhone earbuds. When I hit the button the music momentarily gets real loud and then volumes down completely (paused?). Hitting the button again to unpause it does nothing and I can't use the buttons on the iPhone. I pretty much have to switch out of the Pandora app and then come back in to it and start anew.

I can live with that for now. But thanks for a great service and now for making it available on my iPhone.

I want an iPhone badly, I wish they made 8GB white.

Posted by: Ali at July 15, 2008 05:42 AM

Hi there,

Any chance of fixing Pandora for iPhone so it streams in stereo? A mono stream kinda kills the greatness, IMHO. Also, what bit rate are you streaming at? Is it the same over Edge/3G/WiFi?

Posted by: foobar at July 15, 2008 06:49 PM

Pandora is the reason to buy an iphone, period. It works great everywhere, in my car I have a Pioneer DEH-P700BT unit hooked to my Iphone 3G and Pandora works awesome! You just have to make sure you have at least 1 song on the ipod portion of your phone, or else it will say "no music" on the display and you won't be able to play Pandora.

To the guy who questioned the world music... My friend is a huge fan of French music. I typed in Edith Piaf, and Pandora played 4 hours of music for my friend, and he loved every song that played, AND he paid over $3000 for his French music collection, but he doesn't use it any more, he just listens to Pandora. If that doesn't speak for the amazing quality of Pandora, I don't know what will.

I do hope Apple will allow Pandora to play in the background. I am so annoyed by Apple right now. Yes, it's a battery drain, but who cares.

Last but not least....Does anyone know what audio format Pandora uses? The QUALITY IS AMAZING!!! It's better then most of my 192kbps files in itunes. In fact in a lot of files I am hearing much more detail in the music then I did on the radio or other sources.

Posted by: Rob at July 15, 2008 11:33 PM

Whoever it was that complained that you can't listen to the exact song you request... are you kidding? Free? You're thinking of limewire dude. This application is fantastic. I am not allowed to stream Pandora at work because of bandwidth limitations. Now I just plug the iphone into my computer speakers. All those other suckers bought satellite radio. Suckers.

Love Pandora on my iPhone! Especially in the car. However, I have to second the comments about Pandora running in the background. Lots of interruptions to my cool tunes when replying to incoming texts. Thanks, though for developing the Pandora app. iPod is great, but sometimes you get tired of your own collection, no matter how vast.

So where's the Windows Mobile Client? Looking back in your archives real quick I see a post by "Fred" on May 25th of 2007 stating that yall are working on a Windows Mobile client. But now we have an iphone client, and still no Windows Mobile client? Here a copy of the post from May of 2007:

Posted by: Fred at May 25, 2007 02:26 PM

We're really interested in bringing this to all the carriers, but for now this is a Sprint exclusive.

@pete -- We're working on a Windows Mobile version so stay tuned on that front.

@Chris -- we've started looking at the Treo too, but the Palm OS is a bit tricky. We'll see what we can do.

@Fred -- We're using an entirely different codec than what we use on Pandora.com because the bandwidth available to the phone is much lower than what you have on broadband. None-the-less our experience has been that it sounds great; very close to what the PC sounds like. Are you in an area where there is EVDO coverage?

@mykoleary -- you can learn all about the phones we support by visiting http://www.pandora.com/on-the-go. There's a full list there an information about how to get it on your phone.

Hi all -

Just making sure you saw this comment from Tom Conrad, Pandora CTO, on the iPhone blog post:

"We hear you on the Windows Mobile front. Believe me our goal is to bring Pandora to as many phones as possible -- in fact we support almost 50 different phones right now. We love Windows Mobile every bit as much as that "other phone." The truth is that the Windows Mobile world is much more complicated than the iPhone -- tens of different handsets with different keyboards, screens, input types (some touch, some not), etc. That means it's not nearly as simple as creating a single application that will satisfy a large audience. That said, we're hard at work on it and hope to have some news on that front later this year.

-Tom"

Thanks everybody, for your patience!

Pandora on my iPod Touch is a killer app. Not sure if Pandora or Apple will benefit most here.

I love Pandora, have for years, but have been stuck on this iMac... always been looking for a way to get Pandora on my stereo and set it free.

Pandora, on my touch, which is docked to my stereo ... i have pandora anytime i want through my stereo with good quality sound. This is perfect .. just wanted to say thank you for developing this and getting on the touch/iphone development circuit.

Hi Lucia,
Thanks for putting what your CTO have mentioned on this blog as a lot of us have read his last year's comment and weren't sure what's the latest.
As you know there are many many people expecting Pandora on their Windows Mobile and glad you're working on the app. We realize it's hard to make such because of the OS's diversity, maybe you guys should look at some other similar application that have been made for WM O/S, like TomTom for example,GoogleMaps, games, facebook and many others. They all have their apps on tens of WM cellphones.
Please keep us posted with your WM progress, Pandora rocks!

i am an owner of the original iphone and was pumped to hear about the pandora app. i updated my phone to the latest 2.0 version from itunes and downloaded the pandora app, which is now on my main page, but when i try to use it, the main pandora screen comes up for about 2 seconds and then the screen goes back to my main phone page like i hit the bottom button. i know from watching the tutorial that the loading circle/sign is supposed to appear below the "radio from the Music Genome Project" but it doesn't. I have deleated it and reloded the app, but the end result is always the same. any ideas as to what the problem is?

Posted by: brian at July 22, 2008 08:16 PM

I also have the issue that Pandora is streaming in MONO on my iPhone 3G. Is this normal? If not, how do I get a stereo stream?

Tony

Posted by: Tones2 at July 22, 2008 09:00 PM

Travis, try buying a phone from a manufacturer that truly cares about it's customers' experience.

People keep complaining about the iPhone's price, even after the 3g drop... and then turn around to complain cause all these things the iPhone does can't be done on a phone with "equal hardware". You get what you pay for with any phone, but Apple is trying as hard as they can to give even more, cause that's what their business strives on. It's that simple

Posted by: Mark R at July 23, 2008 07:14 AM

I would just like to say a huge thank you to all the people at Pandora for creating this! Pandora has rescued me from many hours of extreme boredom at work and helped me find countless bands that I have come to love! Great job!
I do however have one suggestion: It would be so great if maybe you could search for a song (on a station or just in general), or click on a previously bookmarked song and have it play, then have the music genome work its magic and branch off from the requested song? just a friendly suggestion :-)

Posted by: Christina at July 23, 2008 09:37 AM

I've been using Pandora.app on my 1st gen iPhone since the 2.0 software update was released. It's an awesome app, but could really use a few features to better inform the user about the state of the stream.

A buffer status/indicator would be perfect; I get very intermittent results when using Pandora at work over EDGE. It would be great to be able to see the buffer and how well the EDGE network is keeping up with the stream.

Posted by: Dave at July 28, 2008 10:36 AM

@brian
Sorry about that. You may need to delete the app from both your iPhone and your iTunes list of Applications before re-installing. If that doesn't do it, try signing out of the iTunes store, syncing your iPhone, then signing back into iTunes Store and downloading again. Feel free to let us know how it goes at pandora-support@pandora.com

@christina
As you may know, a version of these features is available on the Web version of Pandora at www.pandora.com/backstage (where you can see similar songs) and on your Profile Page (where you can hear samples of your Bookmarked songs). Thanks for suggesting we include these features on the iPhone!

@everyone
Thank you all for your input and comments. We're always excited to bring you new features and improvements. Thanks again for listening!

I love Pandora on my iPod Touch -- it is without doubt the killer app!

One problem I can't figure out... Every now and then the currently playing song just stops abruptly in the middle and then a new song starts to play. Its as if the player just decided to skip to the next song on its own. Very annoying, but it only happens once in awhile. Any clues?

Posted by: donbondio at August 7, 2008 01:35 PM

I am having the same problem and it is driving me nuts! I downloaded the app on my 2nd gen iPhone a month ago and it started skipping over songs immediately without me pressing anything. Sometimes the songs play 3 seconds sometimes 3 minutes right until the very end of a great song and then, bang it's on to the next song and I miss the ending. Since then, I got my new 3g iPhone 3 days ago, downloaded pandora and it immediately did the same thing, I love this app but fear as I'm going to have to delete it forever as it's driving me nuts. I saw somewhere that I should delete the app on my phone and computer and then redownload it, as I've I only deleted and redownloaded it on my iPhone (about 10 times now trying to fix the problem) any other suggestions?
