Studio Stories: The Plant Studios
In the latest episode of the Pandora Video Series, our guests are Arne Frager and Mari Tamburo, the leaders of the Plant Studios in Sausalito, CA. The river of great albums made there is stunning, with notable records by Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Fleetwood Mac, and Rick James just skimming the surface. In the video, "Studio Stories: The Plant Studios," we talk about the ways that the lavish studios of yore can adapt to survive in a changing music industry. We also look at one creative way that a recording studio can involve itself in music education, as the Plant has done.
If you want to download the full-sized video rather than stream it from the page, subscribe to the feed in iTunes or any other feedreader.
Enjoy!

how do you go back and listen to a song after you pass it on a station you create?
Posted by: priscilla at May 19, 2008 07:46 AM
This is probably an inappropriate place to post this.. but I'm looking for an email address I can write to about setting up another "genre" category for pandora.. Thanks!

Oh good! i'm glad there's a holding period for these comments. More specifically, I am wondering if there could be a "wedding music" genre/category of music on pandora. Thanks!

Thanks for your comments!
Jeffery and Priscilla:
We'd love to offer song repeats and whole album plays, but unfortunately, we can't. Pandora adheres to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act webcaster licensing which restricts what we can do. One thing we can't do is what's called "song-on-demand". That would require a completely different set of licenses and would be far more expensive; we had to make some trade-offs!
The DMCA licensing is the reason you don't hear a specific song when you launch a station, why there's only six song skips per hour per station, and why you can't rewind. The restrictions imposed on webcasters are intended to allow you to enjoy the music in a radio environment without replacing the legal purchase of music.
Allison:
You can always write to pandora-support {at} pandora.com with questions and suggestions.
To make a wedding station, just pick a bunch of songs you like and find appropriate for a wedding, and make a station from that! You can also search Backstage to see what others have done: http://pandora.com/backstage?type=station&q=wedding

Wow, what is that like a 72 track mixing board?
Amazing, in the A/V field myself but I've never got my hands on one that large.
Very impressive to say the least.

Indeed indeed, molto impressivo. That does appear to be a 72-channel board.
Rather astonishing gear over there at the Plant, certainly. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for providing us with exposure to so many artists, and so much material in each genre. You have peeled back the darkness to reveal a detailed galaxy. Your service will focus my research time on Napster, and I Tunes. I will be purchasing several albums from Amazon this week because of the music I listened to on your stations, and I will be downloading a paying for the tracks I heard on your station, from my subscription service with Napster. Please plan more workshops in music analysis.
PS Yay for you!

Thanks, Pam! Anything that encourages people to buy more music, we're very very happy to hear. Enjoy the new tunes, and thanks for listening.
Haley, Glad you like the songs. Do you have several stations? That may ease your frustration a bit.
Talizi and Misael, agreed that the Plant is fierce. An amazing facility, that one.
I'm off to go refresh myself on some Keith Sweat...

Pandora is a blessing! My employer recently stopped alowing us to stream, so my e-listening dried up and so did I.
After a few weeks of death through local talk radio, my cube neighbor discovered Pandora!
I'm back, baby and better than ever!

Yay, we're so glad you and your cube neighbor found us, Chaz!
Welcome, and thanks for listening!

I love Pandora, and have been listening to it for several months. I have been unable to let Pandora for the past three weeks or so and I miss it! Is there a problem? Nothing has changed here. Please let me know.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. This concept for listening to endless music has exposed me to many artists I never knew existed who's musical styles are comparable to those I am already familiar with. Being a musician music is so integrated into my life there isn't a day that goes by when I'm not either listening to or playing music. This creative process allows me to retain my sanity and helps temporarily divert my attention away from all the negative situations that are occurring in our world.
