New audio episode: all about METAL
Much like spring flowers, Metal pops up in many varieties: Grindcore, Metalcore, Death Metal, Black Metal, and legions more. If you've ever had difficulty distinguishing between these many styles and subgenres (as I certainly have), then this show is for you. Three metal mavens -- Ava, Kurt and Weasel -- enter the recording studio to perform original songs in each of these styles, and to explain how these genres are musically distinct. They don't shy away from Progressive Metal or Hair Metal, either. Get out your black leather, your chrome studs, and your best steel-toed boots and check out the show.
Please remove sharp objects before banging your head,
Kevin
p.s.: What's your favorite metal?
p.p.s.: Any glaring omissions in that list of examples? What do you think we overlooked?

Industrial metal.
Seriously: Bozo Porno Circus, Die Krupps, Genitorturers, Hanzel Und Gretyl, Megaherz, OOMPH!, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Samael, Skold, Violent Work of Art, etc. etc. etc.
Also, please add more IM to Pandora! There is so much that's missing.

Hi, Aufheben,
Thanks for your Industrial Metal recommendations. We love hearing what we should have more of.
I did some Backstage searches (http://www.pandora.com/backstage), and found all of these except for Bozo Porno Circus, Skold and Violent Work of Art.
I'm sending a message to suggest-music@pandora.com right now requesting those three. Suggest-music@pandora.com is the fastest way to make recommendations for our music library.
Are there others we're missing?
Posted by: Kevin Seal at May 28, 2008 10:58 AM
Speed metal, stoner metal, doom metal, folk metal, and nu metal.
Posted by: Eric Schwenke at May 28, 2008 12:47 PM
Yup, didn't have time to hit all of those in this episode. We do have a lot of each of those styles in the music library, though.
Any metal you want to hear that you haven't been able to find?
Or any bands you care to recommend?

Some of my favorites that weren't mentioned in the podcast include TYR, Dragonforce, Korpiklaani, Rhapsody of Fire, Therion, Black Majesty, Blind Guardian, Dark Moor, Elvenking, Gamma Ray, Hammerfall, In Extremo, Kamelot, Nightwish, The Sword, Earthless, and Dethklok (even though they are less real than Spinal Tap).

Nice!
I'm a rabid Dethklok fan as well. I'm trying to track down a copy of Skwisgaar's guitar instruction DVD, actually.
Anybody else? Favorite metal?
Posted by: Kevin Seal at May 30, 2008 11:14 AM
Seriously, I always liked hair metal. Of course, I graduated high school in 1992, when it was just peaking (just as Nirvana came along and ruined it all!).
Death metal and the harder-core stuff always seemed way too corny for me -- all those photos with black leather and scowly faces. Hair metal never took itself that seriously (IMHO).

That's awesome -- I love that you champion hair metal in part because death metal is too corny. Some would view that perception as an odd alternate universe.
Agreed, though, that hair metal always had a sense of humor about itself, and a playfulness to it.

Hair metal mainstream died, so let it rest in peace, Power grove smash metal and anything original works for me ,like Project86, and alot of other underground metal, turn off mtv and find the real music
Posted by: DJ at May 30, 2008 5:33 PM
Is there underground hair metal? Just curious.
DJ, I'll check out Project86.

Honestly, I'm quite looking forward to Rocklahoma again this year. It was great fun last year. True that the guys are a bit older now and don't have the energy they once did, but neither do I. I'm still a big fan of their music. I have created 80s metal stations on Pandora and I listen to Eddie Trunk on XM41 da Boneyard. Rock on!

Rock on, Steve!
(What's Rocklahoma?)

if i have listened to a particular song TOO many times this week how can i "forward" without elimanating the song or the artist?
Posted by: turquoiseboy at June 18, 2008 11:22 PM
Hi turquoiseboy-
You can either "skip" the song (the skip button is above the music player, to the right.)
OR, you can put the song to "sleep" for a month. (click on 'Guide Us' for this option.)
Thanks!

I have to say I'm quite fond of the 80s hair band metal. Whitesnake, skid row, poison, and that sort of stuff. It's still awesome to me today...

You should look into a band out of Florida called Underlined... They are an amazing industrial metal act that are starting to come out of the underground.
