You listen to Pandora, we listen to You
It's true: while you're listening to music on Pandora, we're listening to what you have to say about Pandora.
Pictured above are most of the people who answer your email when you write to Pandora. No robots in sight!
We like to keep in touch with our listeners. It's been a pleasure for us to meet so many thousands of you, virtually and in person.
We want to know what works well for you on Pandora, and what doesn't work for you. We answer your questions the best we can and your suggestions directly affect our priorities in terms of what features to add and what music to collect. Indeed, many of our added features and songs over the years have come from your feedback.
We've always responded personally to every email we receive and we read every comment you leave on our blog. Thank you for all of your insightful commentary. We especially love the personal stories you tell us about music and your use of Pandora, and I'll share a few stories next time I post here. (If you're one of the many people who has asked Pandora to marry you or "run away" with you, don't worry, I won't out you.)
It's really easy to get support from us: you just write us an email, and we write back. No automatic reply from "no-reply," no 'thank you for your email, here's your tracking number.' Just one human communicating with another.
As always, you can suggest music at suggest-music [at] pandora.com.
You can suggest features, get tech support and ask questions at pandora-support [at] pandora.com.
Whether your feedback is about the music, your "playlist," the advertisements or the web site itself, you can rest assured that we're sharing your feedback with the people who can do something about it. Pandora's music analysts, music buyers, engineering team and ad team are only a few steps away from our desks.
Besides email and this blog, here's a few more places you can find us:
We're on Twitter: we answer your questions, note your feedback, and post tips and announcements.
We post photos on Flickr.
We have profile pages at MySpace and Facebook. (The Pandora Facebook application is here.)
And of course, we continue to tour the country meeting with you in person.
We love music and our mission is to guide you to music you love. And while you're listening, we're behind the scenes making Pandora the best it can be.
We thank you for your generous feedback over the last 2 1/2 years.
Sincerely,
Lucia, and the whole communication team

Thank you for listening. :)
After Lucia commented on my Pandora profile because of some Tweets related to a station I was testing you guys became my example for how consumer/provider communication should be.
I even received a support response 15 minutes after sending the initial email! Amazing!

You guys are GREAT listeners...thanks for your hard work in IDing that skip-all-the-best-songs-i've-never-heard-before bug. Top notch listening...I feel heard AND I feel like you value my feedback.

Hello Pandora people
I don't even remember how I found you last week ... it was a great day for me. I used to be listening to a good progressive radio (KPFA /Pacifica Network from Berkeley, Ca) here in San Francisco but then the Pandora box opened for me ... I am still in awe with it ... feeling guilty for having this amazing service in my computer 'free', in the back ground of my writing and reading, cooking and eating, all from my laptop ... trying to focus on gratitude and blessings instead and that is why I am writing now - to hug and kiss you all, full of gratitude, admiration, etc. I will continue to explore the site. There might be a way for me to give back ... and I will gladly.
All the very best to each one! I loved the picture of almost all of you. Congratulations and many thanks to this bunch of handsome people! Cesar Brauer, San Francisco, CA.

I do really like how Pandora works personally with people, but I think it'd be nice if there were some automated feedback too. Months ago I recommended putting in an automated listing for music recommendations that would list what's already been recommended and where those recommendations are in the pipeline to be released.
Lord knows I'd love to know when Pandora will get a decent library of folk metal.

hey i just would like to say that my pandoria radio has been acting up for the past mounth now.
i go to a radio stashion and it only plays the song for about 20 before it just STOPS... i know its not my computer, because i have tried it on many others. i have enjoyed listing to you guys for a bout a year now, and i never have had this problem before. i was just letting you know this, and would be exstatic if you guys could do anything about this. just letting you know.
thank you very much

Aw, thanks Abraham, Rachel, and Cesar! You guys are the best. :)
Aufheben - Great feedback: thanks! Did you already write to suggest-music to suggest folk metal bands? If yes, if you tell me the names of the bands, I'll look into that for you. (Lucia at pandora dot com)

This is another lamp of joy, I don't find many in this day and time . Your gospel stations are a GOD send! And the smooth jazz is a comfort for sure.
I have not been dealing with computers long and don't know much but you have turned me on to an oasis of pleasure, thank you and keep up the good work.

I've received thoughtful responses to every email I've sent to Pandora over the past couple of years -- responses that go beyond answering my direct question to mention background behind the questions I ask. It's a bit shocking. I wish I were shocked more often like this.
Very well done and thank you Pandora!

Hi Guys!!
I have realized how much I have been listening to your music and yet I have not taken the time to tell you how much I appreciate you for giving us the opportunity to listen to it and how it has been really great doing so. Man, my music genre has expanded and I am more so aware of what types of music I really like. It has also inspired me to write and play more different type of music. You guys are awesome!
Now that I finally saw your picture, it really helps to know who you guys are and feel a bond with you. Not that I need that, I just appreciate it. :)
Thanks for the pleasure of hearing your music and that God blesses you in all your endeavors.
Stay Great!!!!!

Love this concept!!!! Free tunes that intuitively narrow down to your tastes.. Great buzz... Hey, the deconstructive analysis of the music is helpful on a technical basis. But please keep in mind that people listen to music on the basis of political, cultural, personal, appelations as well (ergo 60's counter-revolutionary or 90's tree-huggers Bjork. Still, you guys are cutting edge in this project (tailored individual segmented programming on an incredible one-to-one basis--micro-marketing!!!!).

Wow. I was so thrilled to find Pandora tonight. I was at a friends house and they were using it to generate music...a really great mish/mosh of music. So I rushed home and created an account. So far (2 hours later), I have found about 7 new artists, was reintroduced to a few beloved forgotten favorite bands...oh wait...make that 8 new artists! Pandora makes me want to quit my career as an art teacher and become a musicologist. I so admire your work and can't thank you enough for creating this site!
Best,

Hi,
This is great!! the more I guide it the better it gets. The old time bluegrass stuff is so hard to find on FM anymore(in my area any how).If I might make a few suggestions---Lyrics in a drop down tab would be nice and more sub-genre categories on the genre stations----For example I really like gospel music and when a mainstream artist makes a gospel track (eg. Long Black Train ,goin through hell, etc)these tracks should get their own genre--Gospel country, bluegrass gospel etc
Thanks again for Pandora this is great
much love--------------knuckle

Nice update with the new pop-up menu...
More features that would be cool to have:
1. Multiple quick mixes
2. Delete stations directly from my profile page.
3. Sort stations by most played / last played.
4. Opt out of all Christian music from my options page.
5. Dump the flash interface.

Yes, we would like to post lyrics on our site, though they have a completely different set of licensing regulations... For now, a web search for lyrics is your best bet.
The genre stations are very general, you're right. They're just some ideas to get people started. Feel free to create sub-sub-sub-genre stations for yourself!

you should really invest in making this website more social based so its easier to find out what music is playing on which station based solely upon the users entries or like an electric library user content influenced site whatever you're doing right now don't stop this thing always picks out my favorite songs and I consider myself to be pretty picky
Posted by: john at April 28, 2008 07:07 PM
I wanted 2 now why is it when something I like come on and it plays a bit then change songs. When I check thumbs up it just change sometimes when I want 2 hear it.Other then that I think it's a great idea for a radio station.

I just wanted to say that I think you guys are doing a great job!
I like the music education material but I think it hits a middle ground, which is probably good for now but it sure would be nice if you had some material for absolute beginners, just in case people need to get up to speed so they can understand your other stuff. It would also be nice if you had more advanced material as well but I'm sure as time goes by your library of educational material will expand. I know that a technical understanding of music isn't requisite for it's enjoyment but I think it can enhance the experience, maybe (how's that for noncommittal?).
If you are looking for more music please see if you can get more from Morton Subotnick. I think the guy just turned 75 and I'm not sure how recognized he is as a pioneer in electronic music, it would be nice if he got some recognition while he's still with us. A couple of works I would wholeheartedly recommend are "The Key to Songs / Return" and "Until Spring" which was performed on the Buchla Electric Music Box (more music history).

Hi Pandorables,
I am so hooked. I'm no computer geek, but this has to be one of the most amazing uses of the internet to date. Just a phenomenal concept. And a winning relationship for all involved-- listeners, artists, producers, music vendors, etc. I've been telling all sorts of people about this. Pandora simply blows away any internet, satellite, or traditional radio.
So I'm watching Juno the other night-- GREAT movie, btw-- and was immediately floored by Barry Louis Polisar in the opening. I couldn't believe it-- my best buddy & me used to listen to him on vinyl when we were in like 2nd grade... So anyway, I'm really getting into the Kimya Dawson music throughout the movie, too. Next day I create a Kimya Dawson station on Pandora, and I'm left wondering only one thing: can stations be somehow filtered for profanity or the like? It doesn't bother me in and of itself, but there are times when I'm in an environment (work, or with young kids around) where it's inappropriate. Any suggestions?
Pandora ROCKS ("I must scream it from the top of the world!")

You guys are great for doing this. i Just found you guys tonight, and let me say that was a blessing. Unfortunately my cd collection was recently stolen. "Pandorables?" That is the cutest, cleverest name ever. I love it.
Thanks for your kind words, and thanks for spreading the love!
If you'd like to filter out explicit lyrics, click on 'account' at the top right of the page, above your music player. At the bottom of the screen that comes up, it should say: "Allow explicit content?" You can change this setting by clicking on the word 'edit' to the right of that question.
And here's a Juno Soundtrack station you might like: http://www.pandora.com/stations/6ecdd3363b968e68fca411426949d997e7c5e7241f96d370

i want to start by saying pandora is awesome. it is probably the best tool for listening to music i like while still being able to hear stuff i have never heard before. it is definitely very effective at finding music i like.
i was just wondering why some songs just cut out after a few seconds though? it actually happens quite frequently.
thanks for everything,

I didn't know where I should put this comment because it's not really a comment but something I just wanted to share with as many people as possible.
I watched a video last night that left me speechless, it was "Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue.", and it explained everything that anyone needs to know about music, completely! I think it's something that everyone on the planet should see because it describes some musical philosophy that's relevant to all of us. If you want to learn everything about music from A to Z watch this video.

Hi Sara -
Thanks for listening at work!
We'd love to offer song repeats, but unfortunately, we can't. Pandora adheres to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act webcaster licensing which restricts what we can do. One thing we can't do is what's called "song-on-demand". That would require a completely different set of licenses and would be far more expensive (which would mean Pandora couldn't be free to listeners). We had to make some trade-offs!
The DMCA licensing is the reason you don't hear a specific song when you launch a station, why there's only six song skips per hour per station, and why you can't rewind. The restrictions imposed on webcasters are intended to allow you to enjoy the music in a radio environment without replacing the legal purchase of music.
I hope that explanation helps!
cheers, Lucia

Can something be done about the song analyzation accuracy? Some songs are absolutely way out in left field as far as how they relate to the seed song.
After about 8 thumbs-downs, 4 "meh's", and one thumb up... on more than one new station... the idea occurred that possibly some songs weren't analyzed right--or that the AI is completely non-functional.
I would listen to Pandora all the time if it even worked like it did three years ago. I just have a feeling that many of the analyzations are not accurate, and done "just to get them done." If there were a way to flag really "bad" matches, maybe someone could look at those songs and re-analyze them.
Thanks
Chad

Thank you for the wonderful job you all have done making Pandora work. Its the best music website I've ever used and it really eliminates the need for any other websites for me.
I've been listening to Pandora for a little over two years and it's been my main and almost only source for finding new artists during that time. I've found dozens of new artists and have subsequently bought their CDs after hearing them on Pandora.
I've started a new job which unfortunately doesn't allow me to listen to Pandora during the day. I'm sure I'll find other times to listen to Pandora and I look forward to finding more new artists.
I guess the only thing I'd really like to have you folks concentrate on more is getting the dates for albums into the database. When I listen to something without a date, I can usually find it by doing some online searching. Since other people will probably be interested in the same information it would be great to have that search done once instead of having many people do the same search.

And Tony - if you click on the album name while listening, an info page will pop out that shows the year the album was published. I'll share you comment with the team. :)
Chad - Our COO emailed you personally to chat about your stations. Don't worry, we're taking as much care as we always did in terms of musicologically analyzing the songs you hear! But if you ever do notice errors (typos, weird song matching, etc.) please feel free to email pandora-support at pandora.com and let us know what's going on.

Hello to all the wonderful people who make my stressful day at work move back into the flow of things!!!
My only feedback about this site..
I love the site... its great, although I was browsing through the genre section, where you can pick a certain genre, I couldn't seem to find anything acoustic... I'm a avid acoustic player/lover of acoustic... I think it would be helpful if you could add an option to the genre's that would include acoustic/the genre it belongs.. that would be wondeful if you could do that, I would be very happy if you could...
hope you all have a great day...
Your listener,
Clayton T.

Hello,
Pandora's a very fine service and I appreciate some of the accessibility hints in your FAQ. However, in talking with your customer serive team about the accessibility of the Flash content, I'm repeatedly told to urge Adobe to do more to make Flash support accessibility.
Adobe has done this and years ago in fact. You can create very accessible Flash content. Details are available at http://www.adobe.com/resources/accessibility/flash8/. I hope Pandora will investigate making your Flash content accessible.

Posted by: LINDA SOSA at May 19, 2008 06:42 AM
Thanks to Woman's Day I found your site and really love the idea of setting up my own music library with my favorites. I spent this past Saturday listening to my favorite music. The only thing that I don't care for - is that I get a lot of Spanish, Cape Verde, Brazilian songs on my Portugues artist station picks. This is probably because Portuguese is considered a Latin/Spanish Language. This is a huge misconception. Portuguese is totally different and not even close to any type of Latin/Spanish music or language. Brazilian music is a lot closer to the latin/Spanish genre. I try to catch and thumbs down every latin type song or singer that comes on my station, but it just seems to play even more of that genre. Is there some way to filter out that type of music and just play Portuguese music?
Posted by: auri at May 19, 2008 08:04 AM
Thanks, Linda and Auri!
Auri:
Usually, if you seed a station with only songs in Portuguese, you'll get a station that plays almost solely songs in Portuguese.
(We don't analyze whether the artist is from Brazil or Portugal, we just analyze the music and the lyrics, not the homeland of the musician.)
As you thumbs down songs that don't fit your original idea for the station, your station will become more and more customized to your tastes.
Feel free to email me at Lucia [at] pandora.com if you have more questions.

Wish there was a way to play Pandora through iTunes so the signal will output through my Airport Express/Airtunes and through my stereo.
Posted by: Russell at May 19, 2008 11:35 PM
Hi Pandora--------
after reading Lucia's response to Auri I wonder if there is away to make the project put more emphasis on lyrics? I often seed with a song that has a spiritual theme and pandora comes back with a match of style but not content.I have noticed this happens on genre stations as well-- occasionally a love ballad will pop up in the gospel station because its style and sound are similar but content is vastly different.
Am I missing a trick or tweak that would help me find the music I want?
much love and appreciation -------- knuckle
Posted by: knuckle at May 20, 2008 10:08 AM
Hi Knuckle -
Thanks for your question!
Lyrical content is indeed one of the hundreds of traits analyzed in the Music Genome Project, but it is weighted in with many other musical traits, so it can sometimes get obscured. We are definitely interested in giving users more control over specific things they'd like to hear in their playlists.
Meanwhile, here's a suggestion. Try making stations based on a number of individual songs that exemplify the lyrical style you are searching for. Stations based on an artist name will usually cover a broader range as Pandora tries to cover the artist's full range. You can add multiple songs to a station by clicking the triangle next to the station name and selecting "Add more music to this station". Look here (http://blog.pandora.com/faq/index.html#88) for more info on creating and tuning Pandora stations.
Thanks!

I have received several emails from Tim Westergren to contact my senator about saving PANDORA radio. When I tried to find something on Pandora's site, I could not find the information. Is there a place I can look or is this an internet hoax? I may just be looking in the wrong place. Thank you,
Mrs. Robinson
I absolutly love Pandora, and have told many people about Pandora.

I really enjoy listening to Pandora, my question is why there is not music from Italy or France I try to find Ornella Vanonni or other great italian singers like Adriano Cellentano, Bobby Solo, Lucio Dalla or Gianny Morandi and any of them are known when are you going to incorporate more music from Europe.
thank you.

Thanks for your question, Raul.
We're working hard to build up our international music collection. You've noticed that Pandora is rather US-centric right now. That's going to start changing as we introduce more music from around the world to our site -- soon.
We started this major effort by releasing thousands of Latin and Brazilian songs onto Pandora; we hope you enjoy them! We have a large collection of other types of "world" music amassed already, but each type won't be released right away because we need to have a critical mass of matchable songs in order to offer a reasonable listening experience on Pandora.
This shift will also require analyzing the music differently than we currently do -- each different style of music requires different listening skills and music theory knowledge on the parts of our Music Analysts. It's a massive undertaking, but we're really excited about it! We're expanding the kinds of music we stream every day. We're of course also working on the licensing rights to offer our service legally overseas.
Please do enjoy the otherwise wide range of music Pandora currently offers!
cheers, Lucia

I have a station called "The Rolling Stones" there is just one problem with it. The station rarely or does not play any songs by the Rolling Stones! It doesn't even comes close to playing music similar to the Rolling Stones. Warren Zevon, RATT, Neil Sedaka or Phil and the Fanatics are not or even close to the Rolling Stones. How hard is it to play songs by the Rolling Stones? The band is fairly well known as is their repertoire of songs. Why can't Pandora play more Rolling Stones songs?

Hi Bryan -
Our Support Team has already contacted you...
Pandora can only play 4 songs from a given artist during a 3 hour period, due to licensing issues. We also have a self-imposed 4 hour limit that applies to playing the same song.
As a result, you might not hear the artist you request as often as you'd like. That being said, Pandora is a music discovery service; we hope you can find Pandora useful in expanding your musical horizons!
