So we thought we'd try something new and start posting video answers to the most common questions listeners have about Pandora. We're going to start doing this regularly.
If you have burning questions, please feel free to post them. We'll keep a close eye on what we're seeing around the blog. Thanks again for being so engaged.
Cheers. Tim (Founder)

whin i reduce and put the tab at the bottom of the screen after about 2-3 hrs. the music stops and it ask me if i am still listening. this is a pain how can i listen all the time without this interuption.
Posted by: ron elliott at February 25, 2008 11:52 AM
Hi Ron -
Pandora "times out" after 3 hours. If you interact with it any time in a 3-hour period, the music will continue uninterrupted.
Thanks!
Lucia

where do we post these burning questions? I have a great idea for a station-generating mechanism.

I think you ought to add a "futures" marketplace feature to Pandora. It would be just like the Nasdaq, only in lieu of stock symbols, participants would pay an annual subscription fee to bid the prices of their favorite artist stations up and down using real money in a real Ameritrade account! I'd love to short-sell some of that Heavy Metal music! ;-)

Hi Tim!
Software Suggestion:
It would be ultra handy when "detailing" an album
(looking at it's song content)to have a box by each song to click and ad that particular song to a given radio station while reviewing the album content.
Another (really more of a question):
How come when Pandora's main page is up (showing station names, what's playing, etc.) if I go to visit any pages listed across the top (Home,Radio,etc.,etc.,) I lose sound? It would seem one should be able to listen to what's playing while working/looking at options inside Pandora.
Lastly:
Rusty Weir, extremely well known throughout Texas and the country music field as a great singer/songwriter and a given that he is "The Greatest Saloon Singer" in Texas, has no music on Pandora. Wha's up?
Thanks again, we really appreciate your concept and availability.

So I guess here is where.
My idea is to have stations be able to not only be seeded by Artist and Song, but also by musical feature (or "gene"). For example, I want to have a radio station that is based on the "tight kick sound" feature. Of course it would be better to be able to select multiple features too.

Thanks for your ideas and questions, guys --
keep 'em coming!
JC - We'll look into Rusty Weir, and I'll have Support contact you about your browsing question.
Dan - We hope to at some point offer listeners more musicological control over their stations... it's a pretty complicated feature, but we're working on it!

I must say I'm not a fan of the video answers, but I just won't use them myself. What annoyed me though was the fact that going to the Blog page started the video playing even though I didn't want to see it. Please make playing the video a choice rather than a default.
Posted by: Tony at March 20, 2008 09:09 AM
Thanks for the suggestion Tony -- We agree! We're in the process of deactivating the "autoplay" feature.

Hello, I am enjoying pandora. Except for a few things. I really enjoy music, but it seems that I can never find what I want. I want to listen to Hi-NRG music and I make a station with an artist that is in that genre. However, at this moment, its playing someone name Minty, who I have never heard and is definitely not Hi-NRG. Also, when I went into the Latin genre and chose Mexican, all I got was rancheras. Theres much more to Mexican music. Also, I typed in Proper Dos last night and the station started of well with chicano rap. The second song was shockingly by Proper Dos, but after it ended it started going into mainstream rap and not chicano rap anymore. Anywho, I guess what I am saying is, will there be a better way to control the genre in the future? Just clicking I dont like it, usually brings in even more music that is not related to the station.
Thanks!
Posted by: Charlie at March 20, 2008 02:13 PM
Hey Charlie -
Thanks for your comments.
We do indeed hope to give the listener more musical control over their stations in the future.
We may not have enough Chicano rap in our collection; feel free to write to suggest-music at pandora dot com to suggest some artists to us!
Entering a song to create a station is often better than entering an artist. This is because sometimes artists have broad repertoires. This can lead to some eclectic results.
Give feedback: thumbs up songs that do fit in the station, and thumbs down songs that don't.
To ban an artist from a station, just give two songs by that artist thumbs downs. Keep in mind, this is station-specific; it will only affect the station you're currently listening to.
Look here (http://blog.pandora.com/faq/index.html#88) for more info on creating and tuning Pandora stations.
I hope that helps!
Cheers, Lucia

You've done an excellent job of announcing and then delivering features (mobile, Classical, etc.) over the last two-plus years. What's coming up?
Now that Pandora is available on ATT, am I going to be in the market for an iPhone anytime soon?
Can we expect a fix to song-search to allow us to select individual movements from the Classical collection as seeds?
My work is now filtering Pandora (which is probably appropriate), and so I'm on the mobile-version all day now. I know that the memory constraints must be extremely tight, but it would help my on-going station development greatly if you could display the source station when playing tracks via quickmix. Can we expect some attention to the mobile application this year?
Thanks for all the music as usual.

I luv your website, it is perfectly beautiful, and as soon as I can get past some of these problems I,m having, I will be buying music from you, because I have cd players in everything I own. I luv several types of music and you seem to have covered everything. Keep up the good work, hurrah, hurrah.

I wanted to alert you to an artist who is absent from your site.
Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe. He was a French composer of early music and was an accomplished viola da gambist. The film Tous les Matins due Monde was a protrayal of his life.
You do have Sainte-Colombe le fils, which is his son.

When will pandora be available in Canada again!?!?!! i miss it so much!!! I found so many new great artists, and i want it all back! Bring it back to Canada!

When is Pandora going to be compatible with the iPhone?
You list every other provide, but no iPhone?
Even if you had to upgrade to a pro account, it would still be worth it.
Sadness...

I have been having problems adding certain predominantly classical pieces to stations. For example, I can find the "Dies Irae" movements of both Mozart and Verdi's Requiems by going through the composer page, but not by the search function (and thus cannot, I believe, add them to a station). Do you have any suggestions? It might also be nice to have an "Add to station" link on song and composer pages.

I think Pandora should have places seperate from the blog for music suggestions, troubleshooting, technical suggestions, and feedback.

Thanks Mertseger - We're working on lots of interesting stuff, and as soon as possible, we'll fill you all in! Thanks for your suggestions about mobile Pandora and about classical; duly noted.
Phil - Thanks for the music suggestion! Any time you'd like to give us a suggestion, you can email suggest-music at pandora dot com.
David - Sorry about that! We definitely would like to be a truly global service. We'll continue to work on it!
Darnell - We're not sure about our availability on the iPhone yet, but we'd love that!
Mr. Basmt - Music suggestions go here: suggest-music at pandora dot com
Troubleshooting and all else go here: pandora-support at pandora dot com.
We answer every email. : )

Does Pandora get anything when I go Amazon or iTunes through the links on song/album information pages? I ask because I have been buying CDs from artists I've learned about through Pandora, and if it is any extra benefit for you I'll remember to use your links to Amazon.
Posted by: Amy at March 25, 2008 06:12 PM
John -- Thanks for your comments and suggestion. We would like to make classical pieces easier to add to stations, yes. :)
You can create a new station from any classical piece by finding it Backstage. And you can always QuickMix several stations together that were each based on one specific classical piece.
Hi Amy -- Yes, Pandora does get a small percentage whenever you buy something by clicking through Pandora - thanks!
Cheers! Lucia

This site really needs a forum.
:)
Also, I want to be able to "Zzz" songs for longer than a month (the default should be more like 3+ months). There are a growing number of songs that I've heard a million times, and don't want to hear again. I find myself having to "Zzz" songs all the time.

I was wondering if it was at possible to somehow make a technology available to stream your Pandora playlists through a music application of choice, perhaps by offering a playlist streaming service of some kind?
Posted by: Zack at March 27, 2008 12:00 AM
Thanks for your comments and suggestions, DJP and Zack. We'll keep those in mind while we're working on new features!

Great idea guys! But i have to agree with Lucia @ Pandora - this site could really benefit from a forum. Great place to build communities and increase your viewers.

Now that Pandora is opperational, isn't it possible that the library could be expanded without a human having to filter every song? It seems like an applcation could make a reasonable guess at what the "musical fingerprint" looks like, and by keeping track of which stations the song gets thumbs up/down in, fine tune the fingerprint. You said pandora takes the song you enter and "goes looking for its neighbors". My point is that instead of a person giving the song an "address", Pandora could guess its neighborhood, and the song could wander around until it finds where it best fits. Just a thought.

Hi - I love your site and listen to tunes while I do other things on computer - thank you!
I wonder how artists can submit to you - I have 6 CDs and like many artists don't sell through Amazon Advantage which seems to be the point of entry. Please advise - is there a mailing address to send product?
Also, just wondering, in Tim's excellent video (nice to see the man behind the plan!) he said you listen to each song and check descriptors - but many artists have different styles on each song. In the case of Pete Seeger for example, he does a great deal of traditional American folk music but he also has an important contribution as a singer of protest songs. Yet creating a radio station around him only brings up the traditional music. It looks like he was put in a pigeonhole and can't be "more than one thing." How do you avoid that? How could you improve that? Thanks again, Kristin/*

I and many people I know would love to see Pandora expand on their mobile phone brands. Sprint and AT&T are fine, but how about T-Mobile, or Verizon mobile phones? Please expand Pandora on phones. This is a good investment to Pandora as well as there is potential for more money and sales since this expansion is so open and possible for mobile phone users. Please think about this. Thanks

Thanks for the comments, all!
dlittle - We find humans to be much better at listening and categorizing music than machines!
Kristin - Here's all the info you need on how to submit your music to Pandora for possible inclusion: http://blog.pandora.com/faq/#31
Regarding your Pete Seeger comments: Each song is indeed categorized individually, so we'll have a variety of Seeger's styles represented in a station based on his work. Keep listening: stations play in sets of 15 minutes, so if the current set seems to pigeonhole him in a genre, the next set may be more to your liking. Each set should represent a part of his overall repertoire.
What you might do is pick out a few of Seeger's songs that you like, and make a station just from those. That way the part of his repertoire that you want to hear is represented, but not all the rest.
You can see the Pete Seeger albums we have here:
http://www.pandora.com/music/artist/pete+seeger
Karen - Our hope is to make Pandora available on as many network-connected devices as possible, and we're working on it, so stay tuned!
Cheers,
Lucia, from Pandora

I've sent this email in before, but when are we going to see the ability to search by musical/soundtrack? I know I have Rent on my pandora, but no Chicago... and I cant remember how I searched for rent.
Posted by: L at April 1, 2008 05:26 PM
What's the best way to search for classical music by a particular composer (e.g. von Williams) or music played by a specific orchestra (e.g. The Philadelphia Orchestra)? The artist and song search features don't help.
Posted by: beth at April 2, 2008 08:27 AM
L - We don't have much music from broadway / musicals in our collection yet, but we're working on it! Meanwhile, there's some soundtrack stations here: http://www.pandora.com/people/genrestations2#tbl_stations_table,all
Beth - There isn't a way to look up classical performers (i.e. a specific orchestra) at this time, but I'll share your comments with the team!
If you're looking for Vaughn Williams, he's here:

I'm having a heck of a problem getting a Celtic station made
It wants to throw in too much country and too much rock that isnt by celtic artists.
maybe also a way to ban certain artists from appearing in stations instead of just songs?
what i really would like is to be able to make a station that plays only celtic folk/rock/punk , help me obi-wan pandora. you're my only hope
Posted by: Crystal at April 10, 2008 10:17 AM
Amy -
Due to licensing laws, there's no 'rewind' on Pandora. Sorry about that!
Crystal -
Your station is straying into other musical styles because our Celtic music collection just isn't broad enough yet. We're actively working on our Celtic music collection, and when we release the new music onto Pandora, your station will be fantastic. :) May the force be with us all.
To ban an artist from a station, just give two songs by that artist thumbs downs.

I see you already answered David the Canadian's question, but could you please expand on what Pandora is doing to make your service available to non-Americans again? What are the major roadblocks/showstoppers? Is it worth checking back every few months or should it be more like every few years? :-(
Posted by: Steffen at April 15, 2008 05:24 AM
I knew it would happen someday but I'm still completely unglued that when my station launched today there was an audio ad. Bad enough when they started popping up on the screen but now I have to listen to a soundbite of a song being (mis)used as an ad. Please, please, do you have to sell out? That's like public television playing car ads--they sold out long ago. Does corporate greed really have to be everywhere, even on a classic music project?
I love Pandora,
C.

Caitlin -
Thanks for your feedback; we value your opinion and we're glad you love Pandora.
Pandora is an advertising supported business, and though we do our best to place inoffensive ads on our site, we do realize that some ads and some types of ads occasionally offend listeners' sensibilities.
We do offer our listeners the choice to avoid advertising through our subscription offering. We work hard to deliver the best music discovery experience and hope you will continue to listen and enjoy Pandora.
Currently, most audio ads (the ones in the right-hand ad display) only play when selected by a user. The only ad with audio that is automated is the video ad that displays in front of the music player. Never fear, that ad is displayed for each account infrequently.
Thanks for your feedback,
Lucia

Just wanted to tell you, that this concept is awesome! I am very pleased with every aspect of this site...I have found new music, expanded my audio horizons, and simply enjoy playing my 'stations' whenever I am otherwise doing work in my office...I appreciate the work all have put into this...

Jinx - Our hope is to be on more phones and more cell carriers, definitely. We're working on it!
Steffen - The roadblock is the licensing regulations in each different country. We're absolutely still working on it, though some countries will be easier than others. Though we don't know what the timeline will be, you can rest assured that it's a priority for us!
