Return to Nashville Recap...
Nashville, Nashville. What can you say. There's just no place quite like it. I knew I was headed there when half the people I boarded the plane with were carrying instrument cases...
Had a terrific couple days. Started with pancakes at the Pancake Pantry, with the camera crew from DigForFire who have joined us for the roadtrip (keep an eye out for some cool road trip videos coming soon...they're a very talented bunch - if you have a minute check out their great live video of St. Vincent performing live at Other Music in NYC... check it out) -

I recommend the 'sugar and spice' pancakes. Betty, who's been slinging dishes for 37 years there took great care of us. Sweetheart. The extra carbs wound up coming in handy... what a day it became...
Quick jaunt to Grimey's record store for my usual 'fill 'er up ' of local music, and recommendations for what I should do that night. Great indie store jam packed with music, and knowledgeable sales folks... we dug into the Local Music bin...

Then on to a luncheon with A2iM - local chapter of a budding organization serving indie labels for a discussion about the future of their sector and how I hope Pandora will make a difference.... big priority for us. Thanks to Al "YouTube" McCree for the invitation. It was great as always to talk with the folks on the front line of the biz.

Everyone's hard at work figuring out their future in a digital world. In spite of the pace of change, i think it's a great time to be an indie label. The future is all about being nimble, and about people who have a real passion for music...
Raced over to a radio interview with Trippe Fried. Talked about the 'survival' years. Then jumped in a car to the burbs for a session watching the Gabe Dixon Band in pre-production for their upcoming record on Fantasy. Got to watch them go through painful, nit picking process of prepping a song for the studio, with their producer Neil driving from his mac laptop...

Gabe, Winston and Jano have been through quite an adventure. From Univ. of Miami music program (where they roomed with pandora's own Jeff Anthony), to temp jobs and check-counting in NYC, then suddenly signed overnight to Warner, two months later in LA making record, living in Warner apartments, then 2 years on the road... but without a released CD. Got shelved when their champion left the company. It's amazing how common this is. Somehow they kept it all together and have emerged on the other side with a lot of energy for their next chapter. Funny, kind of the same timing as Pandora... I wish them all the luck.
After waiting for what seemed like an eternity in the frigid night for a taxi, we made it back just in time for a town hall at BongoJava. Man, oh, man. What an evening. For the first time ever we had to turn people away. And that's after Ken did a yoeman's job packing people in.. thank god for his complete lack of interest in fire codes...

We squeezed in 40 more people after this picture was taken... it was the first town hall 'in the round' :)

I felt like we were at some underground bolshevik rally...
And a great audience. Wouldn't expect anything less from this loving city. I met a few people who had moved to Nashville so they could hear more music. How cool is that? I couldn't think of any other place where that's true. And it shows. Respect for music runs deep hear. There was a ton of discussion around how to use thumbs on Pandora. A couple youngsters asked about video on Pandora. We'd love to add that... figuring out how, when. Got a decent pile of Cds from artists in attendance.
Then jetted over for the requisite Bluebird Cafe drop in. Watched a typical Nashville acoustic 'in the round' set from some great local singer/songwriters - Victoria Shaw, Gary Burr and Jim Photoglo.

The Bluebird was recently acquired by a local songwriting organization. Would have gone for a much higher price to a developer but the exiting owner wanted to keep the tradition alive. How cool is that? Amy thanks for letting the crew bring in the cameras. Really appreciate it.
Left Bluebird for a last set at the Mercy Lounge.. a recovered industrial brick building. The Altered Statesmen played a great alt-rock-punk-country set. Six piece band including a slide guitar and harmonium.

Then to bed... for a few hours.
Started early with a couple more interviews, Ryan at the Tennessean, then the great folks at Lightning 107 for their MusicBusinessRadioshow. Should be up in January. Great folks.

Could have talked for hours, but had to cruise over to the Hatch Print Shop (continued the interview in the car with Dave's mobile recorder)...

...for a conversation with Patrick Keely, drummer for the Raconteurs, and founder of the Greenhorns. He's been around the block. We talked a lot about the journey that's brought him here. He toured for a while in a hearse... talk about paying your dues. He's spent a year recording and getting ready for what promises to be a mad touring year with records coming out from both of his bands...
Then raced to airport... just in time for flight home. Bag way full of CDs.
Taking a break from the road over the holidays, but already planning a busy '08 - Austin TX, Boston MA, North & South Dakota, Des Moines IA, Cleveland, Omaha NE, and many more.. Can't wait.

It was an excellent meeting. Tim is an amazing speaker. There was a lot of energy and excitement in the room that night.
I STILL have questions about Pandora, but you really did a good job of answering one of the things about "thumbs up" that has always bugged me: What happens if you don't thumb up or down after founding a new radio station?
"Pandora will just stay right around in that neighborhood," Tim said.
Excellent, excellent. I really enjoyed hearing about how Pandora works. It's very interesting! By the way, how did it get the name "Pandora"? Is it based on the myth? Or is there some other reason?

Hi Tim:
Thanks for an incredible post! Wow, I'm thrilled to see that you throughly enjoyed all that Nashville has to offer. It's a great town that I'm happy to call home after just six months.
Rather than re-write my thoughts, I thought I would share a link to a post I wrote about your visit: http://snurl.com/1v6wf
Thanks again for visiting Nashvegas.
See you next time.

The "town hall" meeting should have been held in town hall. The Bongo Java just didn't have enough room. I ended up on the stage at Tim's feet. It was a little surreal, kinda cosmic. Tim has a lot of charisma and he's certainly passionate. I didn't arrive with any questions but all were answered anyway. Pandora is actually a lot more organized and professional than I thought and it was fascinating to hear how they categorize and organize the music. Overall, I thought it was all worth the time and effort. I might not attend the next one but that's only because I'm less concerned about how and why Pandora exists, I'm just happy it does.

had a great time. enjoyed all the discussion about the history, the growth and future plans.
i brought a 'non-musical' date and even she was impressed...
she went on about how interesting it all was.
i think you should practice coming to nashville more often or even open an office here.

The room was a bit too crowded for my comfort, but the meeting was quite informative. The evolution of Pandora was a remarkable story, and it is great to see it continuing.

Sounds like a fun time. My roomates and I are looking forward to your return to Boston (couldn't make it last time you were here).

Really enjoyed the Town Hall! I still can't believe that many people fit in that tiny room. I'm really excited to see what you guys come up with next; there were some great questions and I learned a lot about Pandora I didn't know; now I dig it even more. What an amazing thing you guys have going. Thanks!!!

I really appreciated the effort of the face-to-face here in Nashville and your openness about issues. Your demeanor lends itself to consumer trust in Pandora.
I would like to see a bigger room next time. I was on the stage with my legs folded and my ass kept going numb. Also if there is a way to moderate the Q&A a little bit. It seemed there were a lot of questions from students or entrepreneurs trying to figure out or add to your business model.

It was cramped, but well worth it. I understand you didn't expect that kind of turn out, which really is a great thing!
I did get to ask questions I wanted to, I would like to have talked more, but that's just me. I could talk for days about music. It could have gone a little longer, but I think due to the space issues people were getting uncomfortable.
I did learn some things that are helpful as a listener and about advertising with you. I like Ed's suggestion above - come to Nashville more often and open an office here! Tim is an engaging speaker and seems very accessible. Thanks for that and thanks for Pandora! I spent 16 years on air at commercial stations in L.A., and from my perspective, this is the best thing that's happened to radio in a very long time.

I spent 6 months in Nashville every Saturday i was dragged to a new country bar never went to the same one twice.I was lucky in that my roommate dated a former almond brothers band member.he had the coolest party's in his basement.many studio musicians would take turns playing all night.my best memory was siting on a Harley Davidson motorcycle beer in hand while rocking to live blues and rock all night long.did you know that its custom to bring a pillow to a bar to sit on in Nashville because you'll be there all night? one more thing to top it off the ice storm we had that year there meant i spent a month in a hotel.best of all a open tab in the hotel bar.god i hated leaving.

Tim - Glad you could make it to Nashville and hear the incredible musical talent and depth that exists there. I venture there on (music) business and have been amazed at the sheer amount of practitioners of the musical arts present there. It makes me wonder how you can have a city that values music so highly looked upon as "other" compared to New York and L.A.
I love what you're doing with Pandora - keep it up.

Thanks to Tim for coming; I enjoyed it. Thanks for the t-shirt; I can't wear a large but my brother probably will. He's the one who told me about Pandora in the first place.

Hi Tim,
Got your email - thanks for asking for our input about the Town Meeting in Nashville.
Here are my thoughts:
Q: Did you mind that we were SO cramped in that room?
A: Nope. Not at all! I like how informal the entire night was. You didn't even want to be "introduced"... I appreciate your candid, upfront & honest dialog with your listeners.
Q: Were you able to ask the questions you wanted?
A: Pretty much. Everyone else's questions were basically the same ones I had.
Q: Was it the right length?
A: No. I would've liked it to be longer. At the end, it felt like someone was pulling the plug on the night abruptly. Perhaps it got too warm or cramped in there for some -- I can understand that.
Q: And what else can we do to make them better?
A: Not much. Hold these events in bigger venues I guess. But I'm not complaining. I'm just so glad you came to see us! Overall, it was a great event.
Can't wait to see you again soon! Hopefully my husband (the diehard Pandora listener in the family) will be able to go this time.
P.S. I wrote a fun review of the night here:

We are hooked on Pandora! Our Q-Bean Wireless USB Headset is a blast with it. I work out every AM with my Pandora Mix and my wireless Q-Bean. That means I can be up to 100 ft from my PC and never miss a beat. I can pause/play and forward to the next song while I'm on my treadmill Woot!
Just wanted to share this is awesome!

im not sure how else to contact you guys but have you considered developing a Pandora visualizer?

I just want to thank you folks for implementing the "Zzz" "Don't play it for a month" feature. It was very necessary and has greatly improved my listening experience. Keep up the great work!

THanks for all the great comments everyone, and fun to read all of your blog posts. THis is all helpful as we plan the 2008 town hall tour. You were all good sports in that cramped room.

I'm excited that you have classical music on Pandora now (how long has that been going on?). I have a small request on behalf of all classical music listeners using PandoraFM (realizing that I may be the only one!). In order to keep my Last.FM charts in order, I have to modify the artist name, putting the last name after the first name, every single time a new piece starts. It would sure help me out if someone could modify all these for me just one time so I don't have to do it every time, or else fix it so that Last.FM modifies them for me. The former solution would also give your service a more consistent look, which I think is in your best interest. Thanks for your time!

Tim, I love the service, but what's up with Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner Radio? Were you guys having a little fun? Do I dare do an artist search for Mickey Rooney? ;)

I'm a newbie with a Classical bent. In a bio on another site I describe myself as "a crabby old fart of 77." I live in Carlsbad CA, near San Diego.
I am visually impaired but, thanks to the bells and whistles Bill Gates built into the system, I can read Web text. Now, as I slog through my news sites, I can have the company of Mozart and his contempories at my side.
I get a better deal than Pandora got. Thank you.

Glad you guys made it to Nashville. You mentioned Lightning 107, its actually Lightning 100, the best radio station in the world since 93.7 the Phoenix went belly up.
Keep up the good work. Cookie cutter country music doesn't deserve the spotlight, homegrown acoustic indie gets my vote. Thanks Tim.
