Everything starts with listening... some big changes at Pandora
We're rolling out a batch of changes at Pandora tonight and this time it's a big upgrade.
Since we launched Pandora two years ago we've been laser focused on delivering the best possible listening experience. Our frame has always been that listening is the center of the entire musical experience and that community, commerce, and sharing all flow from listening. Tonight we've launched a new release that brings these other elements to the foreground and ties them into the listening experience.
The new system is called Pandora Extras and it lets us place dynamic content and functionality alongside the music player. Tonight we're shipping four of these Extras:
- Now Playing: tells you all about the song, album, and artist you're hearing, recommends other similar songs and bands, and points you to other Pandora listeners that are fans.
- Friends: helps you keep tabs on all your friends that use Pandora so you can learn from their music discoveries. Find all your friends with a few clicks by importing your web mail address book.
- Genre Stations: lets you explore unfamiliar parts of the music universe by sampling over 100 genre stations.
- Pandora Presents...: features our new series of Pandora-produced podcasts and videos.
What's most exciting about this though is it's an entirely new palette for us to paint on; this is the beginning of a larger vision for Pandora. We've got all kinds of ideas for future "Extras" to add to the system and what we're rolling out tonight gives us a flexible design that will allow us to add literally dozens of new options to compliment listening. It's a whole new world for us.
There are a few other little things tucked into this release for you to enjoy as well. For example, you can now comment on album, artist, and song pages. Have fun exploring and as always we'd love to hear what you think by leaving us a comment here or by dropping us a note at pandora-support@pandora.com.

So a bajillion people in my chat room have said that they've looked for me on Pandora only to no avail...
There's nowhere listed on the site to submit a listing, and so now I say to myself, "how does one get in the listings of the most complete listing of music ever?"

so why do you not *allow* guatamalians to contribute to your website?? americans...very arrogant sometimes.

Pandora Extras is really compelling! I can't stop messing with it. Having this integrated tool to explore the artist, album, and song info is great, but adding in all the other parts (friends!) makes it sing.
This should be good for your advertisers too, since free users will be spending more time looking at the main page.
Way to go guys!

Loving the changes so far, especially the genre stations.
My only complaint? Not enough genres!! :)
Posted by: Eman at November 6, 2007 08:40 AM
Pretty slick. One thing, though, I had some trouble importing some of my friends from my Yahoo address book. It found a couple of e-mails I'd didn't even recognize as already being on Pandora and then another forty of so e-mail addresses I'd never seen before. I know my wife is on here and in my address book, so something wonky is going on. Maybe your thing isn't finding people who are sorted into categories in my address book? Maybe I got someone else's results, I'm not sure but it didn't work for me.
But some neat looking stuff, keep it up!

I am SO disappointed that I cannot listen to Pandora on my Sprint Treo. What's up with that? Why is the Treo not supported?
THAT I'd gladly pay a monthly fee for, since I can listen only rarely on my laptop.
Posted by: Risottogirl at November 6, 2007 12:53 PM
That is pretty cool, i just got on my acc and noticed that. =D
Posted by: Brian H. at November 6, 2007 01:36 PM
hey so i have an awesome idea for pandora. i think users would love it if they could see info about when their selected artists are touring in their area. for example, you'd type your zip code and a pop up would come up with bands that are similar playing that weekend, month, etc.in your city. it would be amazing to see shows of bands they listen to on their radio stations or that sound like the artists they choose.

I am enjoying the new system. It looks quite a bit smoother and it has functionality.
There is one question in the back of my mind, are all these future updates going to come back to haunt us in the way of paid membership someday?
Still enjoying.

The only problem is that when it is time to go home I don't want to because I'm enjoying the music so much Thanks a lot!!!
Posted by: Susie at November 6, 2007 03:36 PM
Oh my goodness, I am lost here. What happened to all my music stations and the songs that were in them. I can't say I love it or don't play it again huh? I could listen to Danny O'Donnell all night though.....

Love the new toys folks on the Pandora face. These upgrades are like getting something cool for xmas
Posted by: Roland at November 6, 2007 04:37 PM
I've been adding friends most of the day, and sending station recommendations to many people I found that are using Pandora without me knowing it.
Thanks for letting us share the work we've been putting in thumbing all these tunes. I did have a script error a few times (on my Mac) when importing my Gmail address book, but I kept retrying because I wanted it to work.
I'm looking forward to you continued upgrades.

This is wonderful. I've been looking for a way to try, say, a trance station for ages, but I don't know enough about the genre to get a start in. Now I can just click the little button- and I like it already.
Thanks!

I'm enjoying Pandora very much, but am amazed Fela Kuti, the great Nigerian musician from the '70's, isn't retrievable in the Genome Project.
Travesty!
You really need to look into offering a World Beat genre!
Thank you,

This is a very nice player! =) The website works seamlessly and flows very nice. Very usable indeed! Thank you for all your hard work..
Posted by: Deitryn at November 6, 2007 09:07 PM
Very nice enhancements, i like a lot!!!
I would like to see two more things, that are very annoying to me:
1. When listening to a radio there is often a very suitable track or artist playing that i would add as additional seed immediately. Could you add such an "Seed Artist" / "Seed track" option, so that i can add this while listening?
2. I want more than 100 radio stations. Why is it not possible to have no limitation here, so i could add as many radios as i want?
Keep up the good work...!
Posted by: Andreas at November 7, 2007 01:43 AM
The genre stations and friends options are great new additions. Those features will help you compete with sites like Slacker.
However, as you grow, please try to keep the UI as simple as possible. For instance, the few new features could have easily been added to the top drop down menus, especially if you replace the fat Help button with another dropdown.
Keeping the UI simple will make it easier to translate the experience to diverse mobile environments without having to reorganize the UI or cut features.
Posted by: Kevin Archibald at November 7, 2007 02:13 AM
Awesome! Thanks for these much needed additions! I love what you guys are doing with the service. Keep up the great work!
Posted by: JMorris at November 7, 2007 06:03 AM
I've been with you since the beginning.
A couple of things Id like would be to record from my PC as it streams, so I could put the music on my MP3 player. Id also like to have the lyrics as an option with the new options.
I do like what youve done. I tell everyone I encounter weather it be online or not about the site and how it Rocks. That is if you like that format. I listen on average 8 hrs. daily.
My only negative is that you dont have seem to have a current music catalog to enjoy; its mostly 90s to 2003.
Posted by: gregg at November 7, 2007 08:03 AM
Once again, you guys prove you're at the top of your game... really enjoy the extras. Thank you.
Pandora provides the soundtrack to my life, much like Peter Griffin's theme song.

just found pandora today, I was looking for African music to download and it said rumba anytime well this is my favourite type Of african music, but it did not reconize any of it but then I then I typed UB40 my favourite fafourite artist you can guess what happened and i've been listening since then that was 10 hours ago and am loving it. thank you so much keep up the good work. would you by any chance play some african music (brenda fasi or some kenyan rhumba?) please
Posted by: MERCY at November 8, 2007 04:53 PM
I hope you offer more options for tweaking ratings of song. I imagine Up, non, or Down, offers a simpler and perhaps more feasible way of showing us more songs. But even if you don't add a "sorta like" button it'd be great to have the ability to bump down songs that are no longer liked to mere "listen/no down or up"
--Also please consider sometimes you make such perfect stations, such as when I entered A Silver Mt.Zion that listeners can listen without adding anymore songs up not meaning they havn't loved the songs. Education on the effects of up or no up is a little lacking
Feel free to email me please, thanks

Please make the Extras window larger, so that more of the artist/album/track infos is readable directly here or add a scrollbar!
I dont want to klick on the "more"-link too much... :-(
Posted by: Andreas at November 9, 2007 01:58 AM
I like the new comment on an artist/album/song feature though I still wish we could make a station based on an entire album and search albums. Even though it has a few things here and there I would tweak, Pandora is all I listen to at work. It is extremely awesome and I would like to thank my co-worker for introducing me to it last December.
Posted by: Mister Basmt at November 9, 2007 08:11 AM
A few more things you might want to think about are giving examples or descriptions for the genre stations. Also I didn't see genre stations for instrumental rock, soundtrack/show music, and scat. I'd love these stations and I don't think I'm the only one.
Posted by: Mister Basmt at November 9, 2007 08:35 AM
Love the enhancements, and here is another enhancement I'd like to see: one of those bars showing how much of the song has elapsed, along with an indicator showing how long a particular song is, and how much of the song has played. Come on...you can do it! Thanks.
Posted by: Steve at November 9, 2007 11:10 AM
Steve, the elapsed time is shown at the bottom of the currently playing song, immediately below the album art.
Posted by: Berniegs at November 9, 2007 03:01 PM
WHY DO BIO ON SOME BANDS.I DON'T LIKE THE FRIENDS ETC.THIS IS GONNA BE CRAP SPACE(MYSPACE)BEFORE LONG.I BEEN ON SINCE THE DAY YOU CAME ON.JUST PLAY THE MUSIC NOT THE OTHER STUFF.ALL THE OTHERS JANGO,SLACKER,LAST FM,FINE TUNE HAVE THAT.THERE SHOULD FULL ALBUMS.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Listening to my 'quick mix' is so great, makes me feel like Pandora Loves Me! And I love Pandora too. Can people listen to my quickmix, or only to one of my individual stations? Because the mix is so much better, I want to share it with everyone.
Thanks so much and the new extras, especially the now playing, are excellent.
Cheers,

When can I buy stock in your company on the NYSE or NASDAQ? This is great! Let us buy in.
Posted by: Dixon at November 10, 2007 06:55 AM
Just discovered Pandora- Incredible concept and implementation!
Further suggestions:
Allow me to click any song listed anywhere on the page for any reason to add as a seed.
Allow me to "preview" and song listed anywhere on the page for any reason.
Search for Albums and add entire album or any of the album songs as seeds.
Allow station "filters" by various attributes (genre and sub-genre, vocal/instrumental, mood classification, etc).
Add additional genres and (important!) sub-genres within the broader classifications.
Keep up the great work!
Posted by: SilverSpoon at November 10, 2007 08:30 AM
'Now Playing' rocks!! Just add the artist's tour schedule in there, so we can find out if they're playing near us soon.
I can't even imagine what else you guys have in mind -- this is great, the new stuff integrates perfectly.

I am just in heaven to be able to listen to such a variety of music, I am not a complicated person, not a pc buff, I like things simple and that's why your my number 1 bookmark. Yes sometimes I can't find a song or artist in the search but not to often.
Being a free music station without commercials and listeneing to what I want to listen to has put music back into my everday life. I am home alone alot and when I'm reading a book or just searching the internet I enjoy turning you on. Now I have to get better speakers! A BIG THANKS
Posted by: oldkoot at November 11, 2007 10:01 AM
Since the update rolled out I love it because it reminds me of the music i used to listen to in the late 70's which i call the oldies for my generation. Plus I love country music coming out today.

I was happy surprised this morning to see all the changes. So far, they rock!
Keep these great changes comin'!

I think we should be able to see ALL of the song traits in Backstage (have a button saying "see all traits" or whatnot). a lot of us want to see the gory details.

Have you heard of the band 'Stop Motion Poetry'?
you should listen to them on
myspace.com/stopmotionpoetry
My favorite sond by them so far is 'North'

another genre needs to be added to the stations now that it's on pandora: classical.
Posted by: Mister Basmt at November 13, 2007 08:51 AM
WOW i just found pandora, i like the old country music and the fact that.
1.its free , im cheap
2. its simple ,so am i
3. i get what i ask for , im picky
im allmost afraid to tell my friends about it becuse if i do surley thay will screw it up..
Posted by: ronnie at November 13, 2007 02:26 PM
My recommendation would also be to add more options to the "guide us" section- "sort of like it", or more importantly to me- "like it but not on this station".
Posted by: Jess at November 14, 2007 08:51 AM
I'm thrilled about the addition of genre stations, however, you don't have a Christian/gospel/etc. station. And you definately have the music b/c I've listed to it. W/ what 100 or so genre stations, it's kind of a shame that there isn't even on - again, particularly since you do have the music to populate it... Make ont. Please. Thanks.
Posted by: lynne at November 15, 2007 05:36 AM
I think the classical music section is excellent so far. Thanks for adding it. You are doing a great job with Pandora.
Posted by: Margo Leslie at November 15, 2007 06:00 PM
This is great, I suppose. Yet if one pays the requested fee, as I did, to avoid the Pop-ups, how did you lose me? I can't login. You, like my teenage son, say I don't "exist". I've been a member for over a year!
Is this the New Deal? All my stations are gone now? I even bought "your suggested" SLIMDEVICE for my music system at home, now, it gets nothing from you.
Thank you. Silence is golden.
That is not the golden rule I was expecting, however. Gimme the ol' times.

Love Pandora. It's brilliant... forget Sirius and XM. And, I would have no problem shelling out a reasonable fee for additional features if it keeps Pandora rolling...
Only thing I have noticed, and maybe it's just me, but I have never heard a longer track on Pandora, say longer than 5 minutes or so. Ther are a lotof tunes that I would love to hear that are 7 - 20 minutes long, but so far, it hasn't happened. Is there a max total playtime of a track to make it on Pandora, under the terms of their agreements?
Just curious.
Posted by: Dave at November 23, 2007 11:56 AM
Although you have great genres, where is the musical theater and broadway? i'd love to hear it on pandora!
Posted by: Sarah at November 25, 2007 01:41 PM
Typo needs corrected... On the Album: Basie is Back, you have the track April In Paris listed as "April Iin Paris"
Sorry I did not find a more appropriate area to post this comment. Is there a "General Suggestions" area, or a "Problems" area?
LOVE Pandora - I tell everyone about it, and have converted quite a few listeners to date!
Posted by: Rob Sanders at November 26, 2007 08:19 AM
Love Pandora! I find myself on your site any moment I get a chance. Great way to explore new genres and artists. I was just wondering whether you had a way to listen to a flowing mix. I am a DJ and would love to hear some mixes.
Posted by: PTMullen at November 30, 2007 04:34 PM
I *thought* I would love Pandora. I put in all Trip-Hop artists (Tricky, DJ Shadow, Portishead, Lamb, Hooverphonic) and then it decided that Belinda Carlisle fit that crowd. Thanks for playing, Pandora!
Posted by: Eric at November 30, 2007 06:00 PM
I also could not find a "suggestion" area to post this. Hope it will be read here.
I would like to suggest a genre of classical hymns, especially like the London Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra in "Hymns Triumphant" by B.R. Hearn.
I was just introduced to your site yesterday and I already love it!!

You guys are really doing great work, and the changes are nice. I listen to pandora for hours every day while I do my homework.
The only problem I have had is that the "I'm tired of this song" is not working, as the song will play within a few hours again. This has happened several times, so it wasn't just a freak thing. Other than that, great site!

Hello, everybody:
Two questions, please.
1. What recommendation have you for a French, Paris, radio station that plays pop and classical but no rock.
2. What is a good download service for French pop songs? Rhapsody doesn't have much.
Thank you.

I heard that you can listen to "soothing sounds" radio on Pandora, but I can;t seem to find it. What am I doing wrong?
Posted by: bivie at December 6, 2007 01:27 PM
Hardcore isn't represented at all, but oddly, a number of weird sub-sub genres are. I think you should personally remove the metal influenced stations from Rock and create a new Metal one, with hardcore, metalcore, death metal, power metal etc.
Posted by: Olly at December 14, 2007 06:44 AM
Been a subscriber of Pandora for ages and love it.
The new changes are great too - but I have one gripe. As the article says the listening experience is all - that's where everything starts and is key. Therefore why not more emphasis on adding new music to the library? I listen to Pandora a lot when I am in the mood. But I am hearing the same stuff I heard 6 months to a year ago. It would be so nice to hear new music on Pandora instead of the old stuff over and over (and it's not just my mix selection as I have several different genre mixes I listen to that I've created).
Therefore before investing in new programming and social networking through music gizmo's I'd much prefer to see more emphasis on adding new music to the library.

*** PANDORA ANNOYANCES: ***
1. User cannot create or name a "station" unless it coincides with title of a song or the name of an artist. This is bad because the title of the song may be misleading or even totally inappropriate for a given user's intent.
2. User cannot see how many "thumbs up" a particular track has gotten from the entire Pandora community.
3. User cannot select a station that consists of specialized conditions. For example, the user would like to say "give me a station that consists of only the thumbs up tracks by cooldude123@foomail.com and groovychick@blah.net" ... or ... "give me a station constisting only of bumper music from cartoon network 'adult swim'"
4. User cannot specify *why* she liked a song. This represents one of the (few yet significant) flaws with the system, which is centered around the framework of the *music genome project* (MGP) and analyst review. Instead, it should be centered around the framework of *personal preference links* (PPL). The attributes flagged by the MGP are a good starting point, but Pandora will not meet its fullest potential unless users can specify (i) personalized attributes; (ii) community-discovered attributes; and (iii) mood-based attributes.
Pandora, otherwise, is pretty good. We'll see if anyone takes these points into consideration.

Since I joined, I've found Pandora to be just what I need (and wanted!!!) I'm a huge Oscar Peterson fan. However due to his recent death, I really find myself wanting to hear EVERYTHING he ever did. Please locate his album, "At the Stratford Shakespearean Festival," so that I can enjoy this really classic work again. Thanks for making it possible for me to thoroughly enjoy your superb listening product. Continued success in the New Year!
