Pandora Podcast #18: Quiet & Loud
From timid to bold, whisper to a scream, gentle to hammering, and all points in between, the volume levels of songs -- and the volumes of specific phrases -- are central to their emotional and dramatic expression. A soft sigh can draw you in, and a fierce wail can blow your hair back or knock you out of your chair.
Those changes in volume all fall into the field of dynamics, and this special episode sifts through the nitty and gritty of crescendo, decrescendo, pianissimo, mezzo-forte, forte-piano, sforzando, staccato, legato, and all the other dynamic tools in a musician's utility belt.
Our guest this time is a Pandora analyst who is building our new Classical Genome, but has analyzed all stripes of dance, hip-hop, metal and pop in the past. Matt Cannon is his name, Baton Rouge is his hometown, and marimba is his instrument.

This is such an interesting project and concept!!! I can't believe the hard work you guys put into it... Being a music lover and singer, it's great to see how different aspects can be analyzed and put a "fingerprint" on a song... I'm spreading the good word and hope to see this project expand... And definitely thinking about applying to your Chicago location... I'm remembering songs I forgot about and discovering songs I never knew.... Keep up the good work, it's paying off.... Rob

How can you know what I listened to 20 years ago?
thanks for being the best site that is on this crazy cyperspace thing that I never even wanted or supported --hey, change is hard, especially when you are a music addict---everything you play brings back all the good in my life. I used to put on my records, yes I have all my albums---now I put on you---you are my albums---it's amazing!

Having my musical coming of age during the British Invasion of the 60's and 70's, I've had a LOT of time to allow my musical tastes to develop over a wide base of musics.
Pandora has not only kept me up to date with the newer sounds you kiddies are listening to today, but to also be reminded in brilliant flashes of memory of the music that I loved back in my day.
