Instrumental stations
Do you listen to Pandora while you work? You do, right? And sometimes when you need to work without distractions you might prefer to listen to music without lyrics. Me too.
I made a few instrumental stations that I can enjoy when I need to concentrate and let the music fade into the background a bit. Try these out, or make your own. All you need to do is pick a few songs that you like that have no lyrics. Start a station from those, thumbs down any stray songs that come up that have lyrics, and you're done.
You might be surprised at how much great instrumental music there is out there. I find most of these stations quite lovely, whether I'm normally a fan of the musical style or not.
Instrumental station samples:
Country
Bluegrass
Folk
Jazz
Soul
Ragtime
Reggae
Flamenco-inspired
Cuban
Electronica (IDM)
New Age
Minimalist Rock
If you've made or discovered instrumental stations you'd like to share, tell us about them in the comments!
Enjoy,
Lucia

One of my all time favorite stations to listen to while I work is The Album Leaf Radio that I created, largely based on their soft harmonal tones. Check it out:

I've been tweaking my Ambient station for over a year now. It's not all true ambient music, but more a variety of subdued electronica that I enjoy both as background and as music to actually listen to. Currently it has about 40 song seeds and 560 songs rejected.

I've noticed that there are no hip-hop instrumentals on Pandora! I've been trying to make a station like this for a long time...

Thanks for the stations!
And Mic-B, I'll look into that... If you're thinking of specific songs or artists, please let us know at suggest-music@pandora.com. Thanks!

Thanks Mic-B! I'll share that list with our hip-hop music buyers and see if we can't get some instrumental hip-hop. Also, I'll let you know if they have any tips on instr. hip-hop that's already in our collection.

I've been working on an a capella station called Only Voice. Starting with Take 6 as a seed band, it hasn't taken much tuning.

If you want instrumental hip-hop, I recommend some RJD2 Radio. Mine is peppered with a bit of DJ Shadow, too:

R2D2, didn't hear of him until i read this post, creates a very sw33t station. I created a station based on his intrumental album, but a little bit of lyrics show up from time to time.. kind of hard to scratch a record without some vocals..
Posted by: Joe Wilson at July 23, 2007 12:36 AM
I have been listening to the instrumental jazz station you created for the last few days. I am REALLY enjoying it and I've never really listened to music while I worked before. It's lovely. :)
Posted by: Jeniffer at July 23, 2007 03:35 AM
This is another great addition. Thank you!
Posted by: whitney at July 23, 2007 07:16 AM
Thanks for the input, everybody!
And here's some instrumental hip-hop songs from which you can start a station:
* RJD2.....songs: Here and Now, Solomon Jones, Cornbread Eddie and Me, Fire
* Fat Jon.....songs: Romantic Misery, Your Purpose
* Fat Jon The Ample Soul Physician......songs: Day, Beyond Love
* J Dilla.....Any song from the album "The Shining (Instrumental)"
Enjoy!

thanksfor the thread Lucia...
one disappointing find was while I was adding to my ambient station was that there were no results found for one of the BEST ambient albums out there:
Dreams Of Freedom_ Ambient Translations Of Bob Marley In Dub
Some other cool/non-elevator versions of tunes have been done by the String Quartet Tribute... to Tool, Maiden, Perfect Circle, Nirvana to name a few by Mark Rubenstein out on Vitamin Records...

@Lucia... thanks for your reply via email! I've added a few of your seed suggestions and i'm pretty pleased with the results. I added them to my favorite station, "I Dont Have A Radio", and come across quite a few new instrumental albums! Its great to know there are passionate people behind this project!
@Kevin Seal, Joe Wilson... I dont know why RJD2 wasnt on my list! He's one of my favorite producers, I just spaced him I suppose... Also, aside from the instrumentals, the new Pharoahe Monch album just dropped (desire), and "FREE" (Track 2) IS THE DOPENESS!!! check it!
Peace

I came to Pandora because it was the first place I found that allowed me to create my own radio. First thing I did was look into creating an instrumental station I could listen to while writing. It hasn't really let me down yet, and that's a major reason I've stuck around.
Posted by: FlameStrike at July 23, 2007 11:35 PM
Thanks for all the tips and feedback, fellow listeners!
Posted by: Lucia at July 24, 2007 02:26 PM
Great tips! I love instrumental of all types and have several stations. Different kinds of jazz, funk, surf, "new agey". Anything of mine tagged with an "I" code toward the beginning of the station name will be most/all instrumental.
Posted by: DIana at July 27, 2007 10:31 AM
This was great idea! I spend most of time with Pandora at work. In fact, my boss as a joke revised my job description and through in listens to Pandora. Because she noticed that my productivity increased. I love my Blue Grass Station, and my Ragtime is great back ground music when hwhen interviewing applicants and going through my inbox and reading all those boring emails from people inquiring for jobs. The Flamenco music make a little hyper mixed with Starbucks but it has its place too.
This is why keep you guys around, because you're one of kind internet station. I cant wait when you've conquered the classical market.

Yep, I can't code without my instrumental stations. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Roots Dub Radio

I tweaked this for a few weeks prior to a trip to Amsterdam.
Enjoy.

is there any good "elevator music" stations that anyone knows of? Elevator music rocks.
I too am a coder and find myself needing something (whether elevator type music, hip hop, jazz, etc) that doesnt have lyrics or at least a minimal amount.

I just stumbled onto Pandora and already it is my favorite site. As an avid jazz lover, it has a great selection of both old and new jazz, both vocal and instrumental. It is great to keep on whether at home or at work. I have told all my friends about it. You are a gem of a find. Keep the great music coming.
Posted by: fbaly at August 13, 2007 10:04 PM
This is a wonderful Spanish/Latin guitar station I've worked on that is entirely instrumental (well, 99% probably) and quite beautiful. Not to mention having some very impressive playing.

I've started a Quantic radio station. There's a lot of stuff in there that I've taken out and started other separate stations but this one was my first station that I constantly came back to. Lots of groove in it. Let me know what you think!

I'd like to chime in with a few stations I've made:
New Age Piano - http://pandora.com/stations/c1841367bed5b9f8f12814500b3e95f8097373da80590865 (Great for rainy days and background music for studying/reading)
Meditation - http://pandora.com/stations/37267f6347a29169466f64cb40ae795c57d5e439c5c55d83 (I like to put this on as I go to sleep. Lots of tracks with nature sounds on this one.)
World Folk - http://pandora.com/stations/664eab8dd7ae05c1735253788ffeb1e8fb0c2cad41b899d3 (I created this one recently. Has a lot of Celtic influences. I was going for a station with a heavy French accordion influence. Actually turned out pretty well.)
Enjoy!
Posted by: Eman at October 16, 2007 12:57 PM
Thanks for all the stations everyone. Eman, that new age piano is kind of what I've been looking for. It's the best I've heard yet other than Classical for when I settle down w/a good book. Can't wait until classical is thrown into the mayhem.
Quantic looks to be another excellent one as well.
Here's one I created from the band Tortoise. It's very helpful in getting me through the workday.
