The Pandora Everywhere Platform

Late last year I wrote on this blog that when we started Pandora we set out to do 5 things, and that we'd so far only been able to talk about four of them.

Well, tonight we can finally take the wraps off a secret project that we started just about a year ago that lets us tackle that "5th thing."

Over the course of the last year, we've had a team developing something we call the Pandora Everywhere Platform.

This is a entirely new system, that allows us to unleash Pandora from the desktop and delivery to any device, in any music format, over any network wired or wireless with capacity for 10's of millions of users enjoying the same simple Pandora experience they've come to expect at Pandora.com.

Using this platform we're going to be able to take Pandora to places that it simply couldn't go before and tonight we're announcing the first two offerings based on this new system:

Pandora for Sprint
Pandora for Sonos

Congrats on all the updates/upgrades! Now I may finally have to give in and get a Sonos system.

I think the nintendo Wii is a brilliant way to get pandora into living rooms ... have you considered making a Wii-friendly page? It should be quite easy! Just need a smaller memory footprint judging by the error the Wii gives me when I try to load it now :)

btw guys, the new skin is GORGEOUS.

Great job guys. Ooh, and I second the Wii idea!

I hope Pandora is working on support for Symbian S60v3 phones that are WiFi-enabled like the Nokia N73, N80, N95, etc. These are already great music phones (Rhapsody-To-Go already supports the N95). The problem is that I don't want (the admittedly cool) Rhapsody-To-Go, I want Pandora.

What's even better is that these phones are carrier-independent (I use T-Mobile, but they don't even sell my phone) and sold directly from Nokia, so Pandora doesn't have to sell its soul to a carrier to reach its customers. Just let us subscribe and download the software. It's better for customers and better for Pandora.

If you can get a deal with Cingular, I would finally have a reason to get the unlimited data package. We all love what you guys do, keep up the good work!

Posted by: Jeremy at May 23, 2007 09:03 AM

How about a pandora for the Tivo? It's a very simple API, and you host everything on your own servers; You don't even have to make an agreement with TiVo, just design the app. The TiVo remote even has thumbs up and thumbs down buttons already!

If you guys had an open API for pandora, I'd write the thing myself.

Great job on the new platforms, and the new look is great.

Thanks for the fantastic service.

Yup, Pandora everywhere - but only in the states....

@ Dan - exactly what I was thinking.

Posted by: Armin at May 24, 2007 01:33 AM

Pandora for Wii! Maybe even a Pandora Channel downloadable from the Wii store...?

Posted by: Michael at May 25, 2007 07:11 AM

Pandora Everywhere should be carrier-agnostic. I know the cell phone companies all want something exclusive, but as mentioned in an earlier comment, you could have a Symbian version of the Pandora app and get way more market share than making something carrier-specific.

Posted by: Mr. Gunn at May 25, 2007 01:26 PM

I hope you really follow through with Pandora everywhere. I watched your entire presentation and love what you are doing. I regret to see you moving away from advertisement based service to a payed subscriber based service; although I understand that it is in keeping with current trends, xm vs broadcast radio, cable vs broadcast television, etc. Please make Pandora available wherever possible, Nintendo Wii, TiVo. Not all of us have a couple thousand to drop on Sonos system and most of us would like to learn about new music with the hardware we already have even with the ads.

Need your help downloading your software please

Posted by: david cobbold at May 26, 2007 05:44 PM

Hi David--

Thanks for checking out Pandora Everywhere, and thanks for commenting.

Pandora on the Web doesn't require installing any software onto your computer. It does require your browser to have the very common Flash Player plug-in, which you can get here:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash
[Windows, all versions]

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=BIOW
[Mac OS X, all processors]

If you're having trouble with Pandora on the Go or Pandora in the Home, please send an email to pandora-support@pandora.com and we'll get right back to you.

I NEED Pandora on Verizon! I already use my phone (Samsung sch-a970) as a mini-boombox; and listen to Pandora at home. The two can be combined.
It's possibe.
It's beautiful.
Make it happen.
Please!

Posted by: Greg at May 29, 2007 10:08 PM

I noticed when shopping for mobile broadband service for my laptop Verizon does not allow you to download, stream or upload music, and videos. Youtube, Pandora etc... are banned under the verizon broadband service, as well as sending attachments via e-mail that contain video or music files yet Sprint allows all of that.

I suspect that the Verizon network can not handle the load hence why Pandora is only available for Sprint?

In any event I would never sign up for a verizon broadband account that limits what website you can use, on their "unlimited" plan.

Posted by: Mike at May 30, 2007 12:32 PM

I downloaded the trial version of Pandora through Sprint but when someone calls me it won't come through unless the caller leaves a voice mail and until after I stop listening to music. I intend to pay the $2.99 when the trial runs out but I want to know if the full version will allow calls to come through. Can anyone answer this? Thanks I would love to use the Wii to listen as well. Pandora Everywhere is the best!

Posted by: Reggie at May 30, 2007 06:19 PM

Hi Reggie,

Sadly the Sprint network doesn't support simultaneous data and voice calls so we can't deliver a version of Pandora on Sprint that will pause the music when you receive a call. Very frustrating limitation -- perhaps the worst thing about the entire solution in my opinion.

I know you can't be all things to all people. I was so sad to loose Pandora while traveling in Korea. (I'm an American working in South Korea for the next few years.) Any luck with Pandora worldwide?

Your service is GREAT. I can't find anything that even comes close. I just want to send my encouragement for you to keep trying to make Pandora available everywhere in the world.

Posted by: Liz Bailey at June 1, 2007 05:01 PM

Any one know when Pandora will be available on the Upstage?

Posted by: Tom at June 1, 2007 06:02 PM

Most sprint phones have codes you can type in to make voice calls take precedence over the data connection. Im sure pandora cant support such usage of your phone, and i have no idea what it would do to the software if it were interrupted, but you can google it and find out!

Posted by: Travis at June 4, 2007 01:30 AM

I was thinking .. Pandora and Myspace maybe .. If it's not already available, of course.

Hi guys,
when Pandora is going world-wide?

What about the possibility to place servers in Latam (e.g. Chile) to broadcast for non-US countries?

Pandora on Tivo please! You'll have a new subscriber (me!) or even possibly thousands... I am a software developer and would love to do it if I had an API.

Posted by: Allen at July 13, 2007 05:29 PM

Yes, Pandora on the Wii would be absolutly fabulous! Is there any possible way to make this happen?

It almost loads now - but then gives a memory error. (Wii uses the Opera browser)

Posted by: Alyssa at July 16, 2007 08:45 AM

Ive been playing with Pandora on the Sanyo M1 ... everything works great, and using the ##3282# code to set the phone to "voice_pri" over "data_pri" makes incoming calls pause pandora until im finished! This only works on an evdo connection however, i dont believe there is a way to set voice priority over 1x vision data. I only wish the program would make use of the external display, and im pretty sure that the bandwidth of the audio stream could be safely upped quite a bit for the evdo people to enjoy greater sound quality. I cant even tell a difference in sound quality between the 1x vision and evdo steams (if there is a difference)... considering the enormous difference in available bandwidth i find that a bit surprising. Still its a lot of fun to have pandora over my car stereo speeding down the interstate!

Posted by: Travis at July 17, 2007 11:07 PM

No doubt you know that existing free or reasonably priced devices such as the Nokia E65 and the Wii console are the preferred end user tool today to tap into new and exciting services such as Pandora's wonderful choice of music.

Wi-Fi/IP enabled mobile devices based on the brilliant Symbian S60 3rd Edition platform will spread Pandora like wildfire.

Posted by: Mario at August 21, 2007 08:59 AM

Pandora on the wii would be great. After finding out about this site, I tried it from the wii opera browser and got a memory error. I even tried an SD card in hopes it would let me store more, but I am guessing it is an issue with ram and not storage space.

Posted by: poncho at September 18, 2007 05:22 PM

I'm typing this on my Wii...

Lighten up the SWF size, use the smaller ads from the pop-up player and limit caching/buffering. Then, create a Wii subdomain beneath Pandora.com and start telling people about it.

Or, create a Wii channel. I'd happily pay money to use Pandora on the Wii.

Pandora for the Wii!!!! Woo-hoo!!! Please make it happen...

Another vote for Pandora on the Wii. Finetune works, which is ok, but nothing at all like Pandora. Not even close, really. Please make it happen if you can. Pandora channel would certainly be worth some hard-earned Wii points. Access through the Internet Channel with ads would be great as well.

I haven't even downloaded the Wii browser yet! I searched yahoo for "does pandora work on wii". It was honestly my first thought of website I would browse to on the wii browser.

I'm out to buy the browser now. I would pay for this to work, ads don't bother me either, I'd probably visit a few too.

Yet another vote for the Wii. As soon as I started really using Pandora recently (at work) I went straight home and plugged in the URL in the Wii browser. Much to my dismay - "no workie"! So... I found out that it's because of the version of Flash player that's baked into the Opera browser (can only play Flash 7). Adobe released some sort of Flash kit that sounds like it could work with the Wii browser, but Opera/Nintendo will need to get it updated.

I'd love to get some feedback from the Pandora folks on this though...
