The Pandora Everywhere Platform
UPDATE: July 10, 2008. We see from the comments that many of you want Pandora on the iPhone. It's available now -- enjoy!
Late last year I wrote on this blog that when we started Pandora we set out to do 5 things, and that we'd so far only been able to talk about four of them.
Well, tonight we can finally take the wraps off a secret project that we started just about a year ago that lets us tackle that "5th thing."
Over the course of the last year, we've had a team developing something we call the Pandora Everywhere Platform.
This is a entirely new system, that allows us to unleash Pandora from the desktop and delivery to any device, in any music format, over any network wired or wireless with capacity for 10's of millions of users enjoying the same simple Pandora experience they've come to expect at Pandora.com.
Using this platform we're going to be able to take Pandora to places that it simply couldn't go before and tonight we're announcing the first two offerings based on this new system:
Pandora for Sprint
Pandora for Sonos

Congrats on all the updates/upgrades! Now I may finally have to give in and get a Sonos system.

I think the nintendo Wii is a brilliant way to get pandora into living rooms ... have you considered making a Wii-friendly page? It should be quite easy! Just need a smaller memory footprint judging by the error the Wii gives me when I try to load it now :)

I hope Pandora is working on support for Symbian S60v3 phones that are WiFi-enabled like the Nokia N73, N80, N95, etc. These are already great music phones (Rhapsody-To-Go already supports the N95). The problem is that I don't want (the admittedly cool) Rhapsody-To-Go, I want Pandora.
What's even better is that these phones are carrier-independent (I use T-Mobile, but they don't even sell my phone) and sold directly from Nokia, so Pandora doesn't have to sell its soul to a carrier to reach its customers. Just let us subscribe and download the software. It's better for customers and better for Pandora.

If you can get a deal with Cingular, I would finally have a reason to get the unlimited data package. We all love what you guys do, keep up the good work!
Posted by: Jeremy at May 23, 2007 09:03 AM
How about a pandora for the Tivo? It's a very simple API, and you host everything on your own servers; You don't even have to make an agreement with TiVo, just design the app. The TiVo remote even has thumbs up and thumbs down buttons already!
If you guys had an open API for pandora, I'd write the thing myself.

Great job on the new platforms, and the new look is great.

Pandora for Wii! Maybe even a Pandora Channel downloadable from the Wii store...?
Posted by: Michael at May 25, 2007 07:11 AM
Pandora Everywhere should be carrier-agnostic. I know the cell phone companies all want something exclusive, but as mentioned in an earlier comment, you could have a Symbian version of the Pandora app and get way more market share than making something carrier-specific.
Posted by: Mr. Gunn at May 25, 2007 01:26 PM
I hope you really follow through with Pandora everywhere. I watched your entire presentation and love what you are doing. I regret to see you moving away from advertisement based service to a payed subscriber based service; although I understand that it is in keeping with current trends, xm vs broadcast radio, cable vs broadcast television, etc. Please make Pandora available wherever possible, Nintendo Wii, TiVo. Not all of us have a couple thousand to drop on Sonos system and most of us would like to learn about new music with the hardware we already have even with the ads.

Need your help downloading your software please
Posted by: david cobbold at May 26, 2007 05:44 PM
Hi David--
Thanks for checking out Pandora Everywhere, and thanks for commenting.
Pandora on the Web doesn't require installing any software onto your computer. It does require your browser to have the very common Flash Player plug-in, which you can get here:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash
[Windows, all versions]
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=BIOW
[Mac OS X, all processors]
If you're having trouble with Pandora on the Go or Pandora in the Home, please send an email to pandora-support@pandora.com and we'll get right back to you.

I NEED Pandora on Verizon! I already use my phone (Samsung sch-a970) as a mini-boombox; and listen to Pandora at home. The two can be combined.
It's possibe.
It's beautiful.
Make it happen.
Please!
Posted by: Greg at May 29, 2007 10:08 PM
I noticed when shopping for mobile broadband service for my laptop Verizon does not allow you to download, stream or upload music, and videos. Youtube, Pandora etc... are banned under the verizon broadband service, as well as sending attachments via e-mail that contain video or music files yet Sprint allows all of that.
I suspect that the Verizon network can not handle the load hence why Pandora is only available for Sprint?
In any event I would never sign up for a verizon broadband account that limits what website you can use, on their "unlimited" plan.
Posted by: Mike at May 30, 2007 12:32 PM
I downloaded the trial version of Pandora through Sprint but when someone calls me it won't come through unless the caller leaves a voice mail and until after I stop listening to music. I intend to pay the $2.99 when the trial runs out but I want to know if the full version will allow calls to come through. Can anyone answer this? Thanks I would love to use the Wii to listen as well. Pandora Everywhere is the best!
Posted by: Reggie at May 30, 2007 06:19 PM
Hi Reggie,
Sadly the Sprint network doesn't support simultaneous data and voice calls so we can't deliver a version of Pandora on Sprint that will pause the music when you receive a call. Very frustrating limitation -- perhaps the worst thing about the entire solution in my opinion.

I know you can't be all things to all people. I was so sad to loose Pandora while traveling in Korea. (I'm an American working in South Korea for the next few years.) Any luck with Pandora worldwide?
Your service is GREAT. I can't find anything that even comes close. I just want to send my encouragement for you to keep trying to make Pandora available everywhere in the world.

Any one know when Pandora will be available on the Upstage?
Posted by: Tom at June 1, 2007 06:02 PM
Most sprint phones have codes you can type in to make voice calls take precedence over the data connection. Im sure pandora cant support such usage of your phone, and i have no idea what it would do to the software if it were interrupted, but you can google it and find out!
Posted by: Travis at June 4, 2007 01:30 AM
I was thinking .. Pandora and Myspace maybe .. If it's not already available, of course.

Yes, Pandora on the Wii would be absolutly fabulous! Is there any possible way to make this happen?
It almost loads now - but then gives a memory error. (Wii uses the Opera browser)
Posted by: Alyssa at July 16, 2007 08:45 AM
Ive been playing with Pandora on the Sanyo M1 ... everything works great, and using the ##3282# code to set the phone to "voice_pri" over "data_pri" makes incoming calls pause pandora until im finished! This only works on an evdo connection however, i dont believe there is a way to set voice priority over 1x vision data. I only wish the program would make use of the external display, and im pretty sure that the bandwidth of the audio stream could be safely upped quite a bit for the evdo people to enjoy greater sound quality. I cant even tell a difference in sound quality between the 1x vision and evdo steams (if there is a difference)... considering the enormous difference in available bandwidth i find that a bit surprising. Still its a lot of fun to have pandora over my car stereo speeding down the interstate!
Posted by: Travis at July 17, 2007 11:07 PM
No doubt you know that existing free or reasonably priced devices such as the Nokia E65 and the Wii console are the preferred end user tool today to tap into new and exciting services such as Pandora's wonderful choice of music.
Wi-Fi/IP enabled mobile devices based on the brilliant Symbian S60 3rd Edition platform will spread Pandora like wildfire.

Pandora on the wii would be great. After finding out about this site, I tried it from the wii opera browser and got a memory error. I even tried an SD card in hopes it would let me store more, but I am guessing it is an issue with ram and not storage space.

I'm typing this on my Wii...
Lighten up the SWF size, use the smaller ads from the pop-up player and limit caching/buffering. Then, create a Wii subdomain beneath Pandora.com and start telling people about it.
Or, create a Wii channel. I'd happily pay money to use Pandora on the Wii.

Another vote for Pandora on the Wii. Finetune works, which is ok, but nothing at all like Pandora. Not even close, really. Please make it happen if you can. Pandora channel would certainly be worth some hard-earned Wii points. Access through the Internet Channel with ads would be great as well.

Yet another vote for the Wii. As soon as I started really using Pandora recently (at work) I went straight home and plugged in the URL in the Wii browser. Much to my dismay - "no workie"! So... I found out that it's because of the version of Flash player that's baked into the Opera browser (can only play Flash 7). Adobe released some sort of Flash kit that sounds like it could work with the Wii browser, but Opera/Nintendo will need to get it updated.
I'd love to get some feedback from the Pandora folks on this though...

Making a 23rd comment for Pandora on **VERIZON** devices please!
I have an LG Voyager and it would be great to play it in my car without the hassle of either:
-purchasing an iTouch
or
-switching my service for the iPhone, and paying cancellation fees...and on and on...

Can someone on the pandora team please look into making it compatable with the wii Opera browser? ... I've been waiting and hoping that this would get taken care of for about a year now. I'm beginning to regret that I like Pandora so much ... it has ruined the other Internet radio that I can get through my Wii. Please look into this.

Pandora on the Wii would be nice, but I'd pay for a Pandora plug-in for Vista Media Center.
Posted by: prexactly at September 6, 2008 10:35 AM
the onjly think keeping you from getting my subscription is the fact that you havent released a Windows Mobile platform that I can use on my Verizon phone. Verizon opened their networks (or was supposed to) so that should no longer be an issue.
The losers and their 'internet royalties' are going to put the smack down on your profits. You want to get a stream of revenue other than just ads. I WANT to give you my money, because frankly, your service rocks, but it's not available to me on my phone. The second it is, I'll be another drop in your bucket.

My daughter introduced me to Pandora and I LOVE it. Please make it work on PS3 or Wii, but you need a screen that changes more. I'm a bit nervous about running the current Pandora listening page on my hi def monster TV because while the ads change, the box and nav around the music are fixed, and might burn the image into my TV. That would be Bad.
I suggest something that changes SLOWLY, so it is not distracting. Maybe have the fixed part scrolling at a snail's pace, so it is still easy to read or hit a thumbs up/down, and rotating the location of the ads vs. music info.

please make pandora available on blackberries. i have heard the reason pandora is not pursuing bb is because pandora doesnt thinkt here is a big enough user base. as a college student that has pandora streaming every minute that i am at home and when i go to open up group meetings on campus i know that there are plenty of people that would use pandora if it were available to us. that is the one thing that urkes me abt pandora. i really do think the service pandora has made available to consumers at no charge is outstanding! so if pandora could be available to us bb users all thhe time e would be ecstaic

I'd like to see Pandora available on Verizon and\or Windows mobile agnostic, and on the Wii.
Posted by: Dan at October 30, 2008 04:18 PM
Please work with the makers of TVersity to find a way to get Pandora working through TVersity. If you do that then you will open up Pandora to a huge list of devices including the UPnP enabled Media Receivers (like my HR20 DVR), Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 which exists in many living rooms today.
It would be great to support devices individually, however if you just added support for TVersity (which does have a Flash based front end on it!) you could make a huge leap in terms of devices that can play Pandora.

I have been waiting patiently for pandora for my blackberry 8830 world edition... It would make my airport and car travels a lot more enjoyable. Until then I have been tethering my blackberry to my laptop in the car/airport and accessing via the web...
Please hurry, I will even test beta I would rather have an app that may crash vs no app at all.

I am also a verizon user who is impressed enough with Pandora to switch to another carrier if verizon/blackberry don't have their act together in a year or so when my contract is up... I have been with them since they were Primeco, 15 years ago? They need to get with the program and realize the nickle and dime game is losing more customers than it is retaining.

Hello there Pandora developers! I have been using your wonderful Pandora service for the past 3 years and have never been more pleased with a free online service.
Like the many who have requested before me I believe Pandora would make a wonderful home on the Sony Playstation 3 (PS3).
The PS3 features large storage capacity, pleanty of memory and processing power for a streaming application such as Pandora, and best of all every PS3 is capable of getting online.
Again I thank you for your years of wonderful free service but urge you to consider Pandora on the PS3. This move would surely be a wise one as PS3 is only going to sell more in the future.

I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that Pandora has improved the quality of my life. So, thank you. However, I'm sad right now because I'm overseas for a year. When (if ever) will Pandora be accessible overseas? Can you give me an estimate? I would like to know whether I can look forward to using Pandora or not sometime during the next 12 months.

Wish list:
1. Pandora for the PS3
2. Pandora for the Blackberry (Storm)
3. Pandora for the Wii
4. Multi-client sync (let me explain)
The multi-client sync would let me turn on pandora on several devices and the music would sync. Whole-house pandora! What could be better?

Hi folks, thanks for posting.
J and DCSUEDE -- We can't give out specific dates for any of our future projects. Lots of things have to align just right for a project to be completed, and we don't ever want to go back on our word. Thanks for checking in, though!
Fred -- I assume you are a Sprint or Verizon subscriber? If so, shoot pandora-support@pandora.com an email with as many specifics as you can, and we'll help you out. If you have any other carrier, the free WinMo version available at http://www.pandora.com/on-windowsmobile does not apply to your handset. Again, write to pandora-support@pandora.com with as many details as you can, and we'll give you the update.

Absolutely wonderful idea, pandora everywhere. My wife already listens to it occasionally on her iPod touch. I like to listen to it on the computer. I love even more to play it on the ps3 though. It does play, though the website looks sorta weird and it's hard to manage. I figure youtube has it's own ps3 page (www.youtube.com/tv I think) that works GREAT. if I could get a super-functional pandora page (or a applet in the system, that would be really amazing, a channel in life with playstation, wonderful idea).

Run coaxial cable from SPDIF out on computer (if applicable) to receiver coxial in, (convert to toslink with adapter if none available) bam, digital signal feed pandora on receiver for almost nothing. Solution until quality pandora plugin for WMC to use with media extender.

Please please Pandora for Blackberry bold
Posted by: K at February 2, 2009 02:02 PM
I read on another forum that Pandora doesn't think BlackBerry has a big enough user base to warrant the effort... kinda odd, since there are millions of us and we all have internet access. (If you design for Voyager etc most of the users don't pay for access.)
What's holding you back, Pandora? I've been asking about this for literally years.
Posted by: Ken at February 7, 2009 09:30 AM
PLEASE MAKE PANDORA AVAILABLE ON THE WII! as a web developer you would just need to make a detection to re-route users with the OPERA browser (which is god-awful but its the only browser that the WII offers) and have a special OPERA page. then i could play pandora through my surround sound b/c the WII is hooked to my TV in the living room!

I believe many more people would use Pandora if Tversity was able to access it.
Is this something you can work with Tversity on?

How about we ask some reasonable questions? We've known that Pandora is, indeed, working on a version for the Blackberry.
Pandora, are all Blackberry models in scope, or specific ones (i.e. Curve, Pearl, Storm, Bold, etc.)?
Has Verizon been receptive to the proposal of having Pandora as a Blackberry application? (Obviously, I'm a Verizon customer, =))
I know that an ETA has not been established/published yet. These sorts of projects take time and when releasing it to the masses, you want to ensure all the bases have been covered. However, as far as Pandora's anticipated milestones are concerned, is this targeted for 2009?
Thanks for your time and keep it up! I'll stick to my iTouch in the interim, ;-).

Pandora for the wii! It has a larger user base than either the iphone or itouch and would not take much work to make it compatible with A. Opera or B. Wii chanels.

Pandora for Verizon LG Voyager VX10000 or I will have to buy a smartphone or iphone
Posted by: aw at February 18, 2009 11:53 AM
Hi folks,
The short (and presumably unsatisfying) answer for why Pandora is not available for X, Y, Z phone yet is that we don't have anything ready to release for that phone yet. And we don't want to make any empty promises until we're ready to release something.
Pandora is a relatively small company with a huge listener base; we have to fight battles (like the one currently being waged for royalty rates in Congress) and meet goals (like making Pandora available for new platforms), one at a time. The last year or two has seen a proliferation of smart phones and on our end, it's not that easy to keep up! We're working on it though...
Thanks folks for your support and understanding,
A
Posted by: Alee - Listener Advocate at February 19, 2009 02:31 PM
I would hate to see pandora loose its listener base to competitors like slacker because it works on the Blackberry. There are a lot of inpatient people, like me that would pay the competition for the service because it is available. With that said I do believe pandora has the better product. Very user friendly and allows for a wide range of customization. However, BB users can feel alienated especially since our phone has been around a lot longer than the iPhone or any other Win-based Smart Phone. Trust me we do understand your pains, and pains of success is a great problem to have, but don't forget that you are in the business to own this unique market. I would hate to see you let it pass by.
Posted by: Bg Fn at February 19, 2009 04:16 PM
To the engineers, developers and support folks at Pandora: You have the best online music product on the internet - bar none! You must develop an app for the Blackberry and soon. Slacker currently has you guys "one-upped".
I know you're a small company with many challenges, but if you can do this. You will be on top of the game. Get your sales people out there and drum up some venture capital!

BlackBerry App still not available puzzles me as I would have thought it woulda been the first mobile version out the gate... Hopefully VZ doesnt shoot itself in the foot and block the thing once it comes out. If they do I'd immagine it would be because of their deal with Rhapsody's crappy service. Then again after buying out Alltel a lot is changing, IE My Circle coming to VZ in the form of Friends and Family.

Posted by: Jason at February 26, 2009 11:34 AM
Where the f--- is the app for blackberry? This frikkin platform has been out forever, and there is a huge user base waiting for this while you make apps for obscuro devices. WTF?! I WILL go with Slacker if you don't get with the program quickly and make an announcement on delivery dates.
Posted by: Joe Blackberry at February 26, 2009 02:11 PM
Come on guys. There is a huge number of Blackberry users that have been impatiently waiting for Pandora. Don't you think it's about time you make Pandora available to Blackberry users?
Posted by: Marci at February 26, 2009 09:27 PM
I've moved on. While not quite the same, Slacker already works on the Blackberry platform and their users don't have to beg. I love Pandora, but I feel like they'll go the way of friendster if they don't open up the platform for all phones. It's not rocket science to develop a platform.

Posted by: Cory at March 1, 2009 11:09 PM
It really does amaze me that the people at Pandora have totally missed the boat on the blackberry front. The blackberry user base is larger than those of all the currently supported devices combined. Why ignore such a huge potential user base? Slacker has managed to completely steal Pandora's thunder, simply by publicizing support for Blackberry and gaining the attention of the wireless forums/tech columnists etc. Pandora's underlying mechanics are definitely nicer, but with all the features and device support Slacker has it's not worth it. Come on Pandora...

Add my vote for adding pandora to blackberry curve.
Posted by: matt at March 2, 2009 09:10 PM
I am a HUGE Pandora fan, I listen to it constantly at work and at home. I found the app for my iPod Touch but that can only help me when I am in range of wifi. What I really need is an app for the BlackBerry (Curve in my case). I find it pretty crazy that such an app hasn't been released yet, because the number of BlackBerry users is ridiculous! There are sooo many of us! Slacker already has a BlackBerry app and its actually pretty good, I am forced to use it for now. So please Pandora, give me a reason to delete this Slacker crap and return to my Pandora addiction! Make a BlackBerry app!

I just started my Pandora account by finding it through my live account. I must say it is amazing! I've been listening to it and customizing it for the past 6 hours! I really think an app should be made for XBox 360, just like the NetFlix one. I know it would need ad support or subscription, which I have no problem with and would readily pay for. I wouldn't even need my home computer to be on except to check emails. My 2 cents.
Thanks for the service!!!

I was wondering exactly what keeps Pandora from having an app for phones on Verizon's service like the Env Touch. Does Verizon have a hold on things where it is not possible?
Posted by: Alan at July 4, 2009 07:30 AM
Alan - It's quite expensive and time consuming to create a Pandora client for a specific cell phone model.
Some phones share a common operating system and have standardized hardware. For those families of phones we can make one version that will work on all devices in that family. This is true of the Blackberry, iPhone, Pre, and to some extent on Windows Mobile and Android phones. That's why we are concentrating on devices in those families. Another characteristic of these families of devices is that third parties can make applications for them that the end user can select and install without any assistance from the mobile carrier.
The enV Touch is a specialized device. It would require it's own individual version of the Pandora application, certified by the carrier and installed through the carrier's infrastructure. Unfortunately we haven't been able to make such an agreement with Verizon. They do have a service called Music with Rhapsody that might fill your needs.
Posted by: Etienne - Pandora Listener Support at July 5, 2009 03:35 PM
I currently have Verizon wireless and am using an enV touch and think that Pandora is great. Although, these factors don't quite mesh too well. It's simple, as long as Verizon can take a bit out of your wallet (albeit a small bite here and there) they will. Why would they allow such a thing as Pandora mobile when they can charge you a fee for their crap Rhapsody music service?!?!?! I get the same weird looks from my friends that use loopt when I tell them that I don't use it because it's a pay application on Verizon which is when they proceed to laugh. It's crap!!!
I'm ready to be done with Verizon all together. Yes, they have coverage and signal where other carriers lack and yes, they have a larger customer service base to handle issues better where, again, other carriers lack but still... do they really need to ding us on this petty stuff??? They're already charging more than any other carriers for their service so why do they want to remain petty on things like mobile entertainment services or ringtones or other items along these lines?!?!?!
Pandora for Verizon will NEVER happen. It's not in the best interest of their "bleed them dry" business model.
