Pandora/Zing Device: What it is. What it isn't.

Lots swirling around in the blogosphere today after our Pandora Everywhere announcements last night. The one element of last night's event that I didn't blog about here is the prototype connected media player we showed at the end of the night.

There's been some confusion about just what we showed last night and I thought I'd post a couple of photos and give you the direct scoop.

Here's roughly what I said at the event:

"Looking into the crystal ball a bit, there are two changes on the horizon that we're really excited about and those are Muni WiFi which has the potential to bring ubiquitous WiFi coverage to urban centers and WiMax which has the potential to blanket the country in a high speed network that you can access at 60 miles per hour in the middle of nowhere. While these technologies aren't here today, they are fast approaching -- Sprint alone is making a billion dollar investment in WiMax services.

One of the most interesting startups in the bay area right now is a company called Zing. They're building a really cool platform that enables WiFi connected media players. They're the company behind the new WiFi-connected Sansa Connect media player.

Three weeks ago when we started preparing for tonight, I called the team at Zing and asked if they'd be willing to take the Pandora Everywhere Platform and work with us to quickly develop a technology demo of Pandora running on a WiFi connected device. Here we are three weeks later and I've got something very cool to show you.

This is a handmade prototype of a WiFi connect Pandora media player. I should caution at this point that this is a tech demo only -- there are lots of things that need to fall into place before something like this could be brought to market, not the least of which is we need ubiquitous WiFi access.

The really cool things about this prototype is that it was just three weeks in the making. the Pandora Everywhere Platform is going to let us bring Pandora to all kinds of places that you just can't reach with a website alone."

Some important things to note about all of this:

  • It was just a technology demo; it really wasn't a product announcement
  • It was built by Zing and Pandora - SanDisk wasn't involved in any way
  • Pandora has no plans to bring a Pandora-specific device to market

I'm not being coy here. This isn't a "wink-wink-nudge-nudge it was just a demo" kind of thing. It really was just a demo. We're excited to find out where this may lead, but it's still very early days. As I said last night, this all came together just 3 weeks ago. We're certainly not desperately racing off to do direct battle with the iPod. As has been observed in other quarters, that would be a strategy to approach with great caution.

As cool as the Zing/Pandora demo is, the real news last night was Pandora for Sprint and Pandora for Sonos. Both are available now and are quite real.

Have you looked into the Zune by Microsoft? I have one, and it would be awesome to have Pandora on my Zune. Just wondering if this has been suggested before, but you might want to make a phone call if you haven t already. *wink wink nudge nudge*

Posted by: Brian at May 23, 2007 03:22 PM

While it is cool to be brining the expansion of distribution forward, there is going to be a point where you need to actually turn this into a business. With the increase in royalties coming down the pipe, WiFi by itself will not solve the problem.

I personally have played with the Yahoo cousin of this demo unit. I am sure there are some differences under the hood, but in all it is the same device again.

Given that Zing designed that one and now the Pandora one, it would seem to scream that Zune is not a direction that this is heading in, but a Yahoo merging.

As the royalties climb higher and higher, the delivery mechanism is going to be just one small issue in the growth of internet music distribution.

Posted by: michael at May 23, 2007 05:49 PM

Even if it's not real right now.... it would be awesome to see MS integrate this into a Zune 2.0. Does it need an always-on connection, or could it work (like Slacker) with a trickle feed/sync process to buffer music ahead of time plus picking from a users pre-existing content on the device?
I'd be happy to have a (few hours) buffer of content and sacrifice some instant tuning of the algorithm and repeats for something better than an iPod ;)

Posted by: OffBeatMammal at May 23, 2007 10:51 PM

I wonder: are these new developments a sign of quiet confidence that Pandora will continue and hopefully re-open internationally?

Hope so!

Ver, very, very cool.

The product is hot.

I'd pay a subscription for music on a device like this. If it could store a couple of hours of music for the commute that would be an added bonus (the licensing issues with storage would likely preclude this).

Pandora needs to figure out how to drag the music radio concept kicking and screaming into the 21st century and a "transistor radio" like this would be a key element. Eventually the rights holders will understand that the game has changed and start playing by the new rules.

This doesn't have much to do with this blog entry but I'd just like to say that I've been with Pandora.com for a while now and I've loved it a lot. I'm really happy, too, to see a new layout. It's very well done and it have a great colour scheme. Anyway, thanks so much. You've made surfing the internet loads of fun. I've discovered a bunch of artists that I love and I always look forawrd to creating new stations! <3

Posted by: Roxxi at May 24, 2007 01:12 PM

I too would love to have the Pandora service available on my Zune. Before that happens though, you guys are right, their would need to be ubiquitous WiFi access across the country. My Zune playlist becomes pretty stale sometimes and I'd love to transfer my music stations from the website to my Zune.

Any plans for s60 or symbian 9? We have wifi phones (n80, n95,etc). these also come with decent headphones, a media player, a fm radio and even a podcast app. The wifi works well too. In fact I'm posting from my n80 .

Posted by: John c at May 24, 2007 09:36 PM

Wow. I always knew something like this was coming. And it will rock.

Posted by: Parkingstones at May 25, 2007 09:31 AM

We're interested in bringing Pandora to all the places you want it to be. Thanks for letting us know you'd like to see it on S60/Symbian/Zune.

when I first found Pandora I was ecstatic. It's a sound track for life! But what I want it for most is to be able to use it in the field (land surveying). I'm not interested in paying 45$ a month to sprint just for mobile Pandora but I'd be happy to pay around half that for a portable that does nothing but receive my Pandora stations(what this prototype seems to be).

here's to the future!

I was very excited when the news of your "technology demo" hit the web. Now I'm disappointed to hear that you have no plans to develop the product. I am desperately looking for a way to get out of XM radio. My music service of choice is definitely Pandora. The problem with your big announcement is that a lot of us carry cell phones supplied by our employers and they are not going to foot the bill for our "on the go" music fix. I urge you to develop a player similar to the forthcoming Slacker but without the satellite feed. If you just give me a few gig to store music on until I'm back in range of a Wifi connection, I'll be happy. Unfortunately, if Slacker beats you to the market by very much, I'll be forced to settle for that. And once I've committed to the player, I will be reluctant to change services. I sent an email to your support email address and told them, I'll gladly give you the $13/month I'm now giving XM.

Everywhere, eh... howabout on Facebook next? This'd do nicely and it's already got a matching color scheme:

I can't afford gadgetry, but am glad Pandora's going there (instead of, say, caving in under fees).

Posted by: F at May 26, 2007 01:29 PM

Have you looked into the licensing last.fm uses for streaming all over the world? Their stations are less sophisticated than Pandora's, but the idea behind is still the same. Since I believe, they are not streaming illegally to Germany or other countries, you might want to contact them and ask them about the leagal issues in order to bring you back online worldwide.

I just want to say that I think that the Vaseline ad is just so gross! I hate looking at that texture. Eeeeeeeeeeeew! Please get rid of that horrible brown texture. Everything else about Pandora is great. Thank you.

I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate Pandora Radio. I listen to it everyday at work. I was wondering if there are certain bands that we like, and that might not be available on Pandora yet, if there was a way that we would beable to let you guys know, so that you might be able to add it to your archive. Thanks ~A

This totally takes the cake as far as websurfing tuones... Using my computer drives to store the libraries killed its performance-- now I can travel on w/o laggin or cluttering my drives. It is so easy to use and fills in those missing jams I've been missing (& give inner chuckle as the songs take me back when.....) "yeah!" Funny how a set of notes and melody can completely change yer whole mood and take you miles from where u were b4 w/o even leavin yer chair. Thanx, God Bless!

Very Goooood!

it would be great :)

But for example, i'm from Brazil if i buy it (ok, i know its just a demo)... it'll work ok here??

Thnaks :)

Posted by: willian at June 4, 2007 03:49 AM

I love that you can access Pandora on other platforms--but why limit your options to just one service provider? Are there plans to create new opportunities for non-sprint users to access pandora from their phones/portable mp3 players?

Posted by: krisserin at June 8, 2007 01:24 PM

I can't wait to see Pandora on the iPhone! It probably won't take any extra work to port Pandora to it since it runs Flash.

Oh, and I just tried to connect from my web-enabled phone and I gotta say--YOU ROCK. It is such a beautifully responsible thing to see such a tight organization like Pandora handle every aspect of being an internet company with grace and style. Even though you don't support my phone, at least you have the decency to have a nice mobile page letting me know. Sometimes it's the little things that mean a lot.

Only problem with Pandora on iPhone is that iPhone doesn't support Flash. Maybe Pandora can come up with an iPhone compatible interface. Now that would really rock!

i'm a broke college student with a grandma that loves him very much, and i'd also kill for pandora on my new iphone. i would rather listen to a couple 15 second commercials than pay a fee but whatever your service rocks. i know it's something on apple's end right now. gotta get their asses up and enable flash. im told it's happening in February.

Also i would kill for Pandora on the iphone

+1 for pandora on the iPhone!

I am against saying I would pay for something before I've actually used the feature, but this is an instance I probably would figure out a way to scrape together $1 - $5 a month. I'd never pay more than $5 a month and it would have to come with some pretty neat bells and whistles on top of the standard interface for me to shell out $5.00.

But yeah, starving college kid from the states living abroad with iPhone... Please pretty please! I'll be a good boy and stay off of CNN!

Posted by: MacAddict at January 10, 2008 11:55 AM

yes, iphone please. I'd pay $5-10...

i love pandora i am beside myself at the fact that i cant listen to it on my iphone, cant a version be created for iphone? even the pandora widget i downloaded for my home computer does not work properly. a version without the flashplayer would get the tunes on my phone, please knock our socks off we are all waiting to enjoy Pandora on our iphones:)

Posted by: Bradley Neil at January 22, 2008 03:50 PM

OMG, I would so totaly pay 5 bucks a month for pandora on the iphone. This coming from the cheapest guy on the planet. PRETTY PLEASE

Posted by: Austinite at January 22, 2008 08:41 PM

Must... Have... Pandora... *cough* ...on my iPhone!!! That would be great if there was a way to use pandora w/o flash... Even better if Apple would just friggin enable flash on safari. If I understand correctly, iPhone has youtube because apple went through and started making QuickTime versions of all the videos. I'm a little less than optimistic that the same type of thing could happen here :-/

Posted by: ash at March 19, 2008 08:50 AM

I've been listening to Pandora for over a year or so and I would definitely pay for a subscription to Pandora to hear it over my iPhone. I don't listen to normal radio any more, usually hate the radio personalities too much. The only time I'm not Wi-Fi enabled is when I'm between point A and B, so if it did get on the iPhone, I would hope there was a very good buffering system (a dozen songs or more maybe?) to help out when relying purely on the Edge network. Would also be awesome if the advance-click on earphones that come with the iPhone could be used for thumbing up/down.

Posted by: cheryll at March 23, 2008 04:40 AM

I would LOVE a pandora iPhone app, and now with the native development kit that Apple has released it seems like it would be pretty easy to create a Pandora app. I already have a last.fm hacked app, but would love an official Pandora app.

Posted by: kyle Murphey at April 2, 2008 09:44 AM

+1 vote for Pandora on the iPhone.

From a marketing/advertising perspective (my profession), if Pandora is charging per page impression/or per click for their ads, enabling a iPhone version of Pandora would greatly increase total revenues and would pay for itself without a subscription based service that others suggested. 14 million iPhones will have been sold by the end of 2008. That means there could be 14 million potential Pandora subscribers across the globe (if licensing restrictions evolve).

Besides the sheer fact that the masses are requesting it, it makes sense from a financial fiscal perspective. Wake up Pandora! This is your call to action. Apple may be dragging its feet in developing iPhones that support flash, however this doesn't mean you should neglect the opportunity to develop an iPhone only non-flash version of Pandora.

It would be great to have an iPhone app.
It would also be great to have some type of proxy service that I can setup to help reduce bandwidth and argue for turning this great service back on.

PANDORA ON iPHONE PLEASE!!!!

Posted by: ajprius at May 14, 2008 12:18 PM

I would like to join support to the iPhone voices. Part of the reason I have an iPhone is because I won't carry more devices. iPhone is my music, phone, datebook, internet, everything in one. And the brilliantly easy to use and ever-increasing number of developers who are creating iPhone specific software shows how easy and brilliant the product is.

There is already a close cousin of Pandora on iPhone with a web-based application, AccuRadio, which is somewhat customizeable and such. What I'm seeing here though, Pandora is even better! But alas, the flash thing is still a stumbling block for iPhone. But what would be better is if Pandora accessed Apple's Software Development Program, which gives you the stuff you need to create an iPhone specific application that you can charge to download and use if you needed.

Although I might be willing to pay a nominal fee for usage, yeah, a $45 subscription service is way out of the question.

I wonder if Pandora things making it available on Iphone takes away some of the incentive to buy songs.
I'd pay $5 a month, more than they're making off the zero songs I've bought. ;)

Posted by: wassup at June 17, 2008 05:20 PM

I do not like iPods. I don't like the fact that using one would require me to convert my entire digital music library to Apple's proprietary file format, and to use their clunky media player/music service.

I do not like AT&T. Everyone I've spoken to who has used their service has had very little good to say about them, and their network's coverage is piss-poor in my home town.

I love Pandora. I've found more great music through Pandora in the last year than I had previously found throughout my entire life without it.

Those things in mind, if Pandora were to port its service to the iPhone (or even better, to the iPod Touch), I would relent my predisposition, convert my music to Apple's format, break down, and buy it. It's simply to amazing a prospect to pass up. Hell, I would consider buying an iPhone or iPod Touch for the implicit purpose of using Pandora and nothing else, continuing to use my previous cell phone or MP3 player, respectively. Pandora really means that much to me, and to be able to take it mobile would make my digital music life, as I'm sure it would for many, many others.
