Pandora for Sprint

phone.png
Want to listen to Pandora on the go? How about at the gym? Walking to school? In your car?

This is something we call Pandora on the Go, and it taps into entirely new capabilities of the Pandora Everywhere Platform. All your stations, all the songs you love, the power of the music genome project -- in your pocket.

We're incredibly excited to announce that Pandora is coming to Sprint. Sprint is without question the most forward-thinking carrier when it comes to digital music. They were the first to market with over the air downloads, the first to set prices at just .99 cents per song price, and they also have the best music phones on the market. With Pandora for Sprint you get the full Pandora experience, but in the palm of your hand anywhere you want to listen.

Pandora for Sprint is available today on 5 phones. Including one that's just $9.99 with a contract. We'll be rolling out support for 5 more phones over the course of the next 30 days including the Upstage Sprint's amazing music phone.

I have a Motorola Q on Sprint, and I'd love to see a native Windows Mobile client for this.

Posted by: sbono13 at May 23, 2007 01:45 AM

What about verizon? I switched from sprint cuz sprint dumps on everybody.

All I need to know is that you guys didn't make a deal with only one company.

Also will this work when the phone is closed?

Thats Great! Now come back to Argeentinaaa!!!

Posted by: has at May 23, 2007 05:54 AM

Yes! Excellent!

...and there was much rejoicing.

Which models and where do I download it from (URL please)? Thanks!

Posted by: Seth at May 23, 2007 09:30 AM

What 5 models does it work with now and what are the coming 5 phone models? There doesn't seem to be info on Sprint's site. Thanks!

This is great news!

Posted by: Matt at May 23, 2007 02:53 PM

any plans for other providers, once network capability catches up (e.g. AT&T), or is this an exclusive Sprint deal?

Posted by: derelict at May 23, 2007 04:09 PM

thats totally sweet will you be planning to get deals with other carriers e.g.) rogers and such.

btw give Canada back Pandora!!!!

Any plans to answer any of these questions?

How about Pandora for w;ndows Mobile?

Posted by: Matt at May 24, 2007 11:39 AM

I also have a Motorola Q with Sprint, and I'd love to see Pandora come out with a client for Windows Mobile. Heck, even if I could download the Java file for my phone I'd be happy.

Posted by: Pete at May 24, 2007 05:04 PM

Will you be supporting the Treo 755p?

Posted by: chris at May 24, 2007 08:15 PM

What bitrate is the Pandora on Sprint using? I tried it on my mm7500 phone and it sounds horrible, much worse than on my PC.

Posted by: Fred at May 25, 2007 02:26 PM

We're really interested in bringing this to all the carriers, but for now this is a Sprint exclusive.

@pete -- We're working on a Windows Mobile version so stay tuned on that front.

@Chris -- we've started looking at the Treo too, but the Palm OS is a bit tricky. We'll see what we can do.

@Fred -- We're using an entirely different codec than what we use on Pandora.com because the bandwidth available to the phone is much lower than what you have on broadband. None-the-less our experience has been that it sounds great; very close to what the PC sounds like. Are you in an area where there is EVDO coverage?

@mykoleary -- you can learn all about the phones we support by visiting http://www.pandora.com/on-the-go. There's a full list there an information about how to get it on your phone.

CTO @ Pandora

wtf tom, no treo? er, guess i should read the thread first :)

Posted by: rob at May 26, 2007 02:24 PM

There are many programs that stream music to the Treo. Pockettunes...or you can do just straight up java.

Posted by: Chris at May 28, 2007 09:28 AM

please hook me with Pandora

Posted by: mike at June 6, 2007 10:50 AM

love ur station

Posted by: mike at June 6, 2007 10:51 AM

Treo (via PocketTunes Deluxe) already supports some streaming music stations (e.g. Radioio, others), so it should be fairly easy for the Pandora team to implement this. As a LONGTIME Pandora listener at home (via Squeezebox), I really look forward to getting mobile access via my Treo.

Posted by: sleepysurf at June 10, 2007 11:46 AM

I just wanted to put in my vote for a Treo enabled version of Pandora. I realize palmOS is a quagmire, but I'd really love to be able to listen to my Pandora stations on the go... especially in the car. Even better if it could work with older units (like the 650). Keep up the good work, guys. I'm hooked.

Posted by: chris at June 11, 2007 10:41 AM

I just hope to put my vote in for more carriers too. Sprint just doesn't work well in my area. I have had 2 tries at sprint and it just won't receive here. Love the pandora, really hope to see it on other carriers. Thanks for the hard work.

Posted by: Jerry at June 12, 2007 01:44 PM

This is pretty exciting. I'm getting a new phone in july, and I was highly considering the Upstage (since I'll most likely stay with Sprint) and if it is supported by Pandora by then I'll definitely get one.

Posted by: jake at June 15, 2007 04:08 AM

windows mobile soon? Much interested!

Posted by: Chris at June 18, 2007 08:00 PM

Hey, I see that you are currently working on the RAZR and I am wondering what the e.t.a. is on that and have a suggestions if it hasn't already been dealt with. I am assuming it will run on it's own program and some of the programs that I have on this phone will leave the back light on, which kills the battery or will only run when the phone is open. It would be nice to close it and still listen. Thanks.

Posted by: Brian at June 20, 2007 04:07 PM

Pandora, of which I LOVE, displays the Sanyo M1 Phone as a potential matter of fact system device that will except Pandora music for a 30 day trial on your phone, actually showing an M1 Sanyo. Once you click on it, it somehow decides to show a Sanyo 900 model phone. Continuing on with further clicks just to see if it's some glitch, you are informed that Pandora's offer is not available on your Sanyo M1 Cell phone at this time. Just more of the same unavailability on my $200 Sanyo M1 Phone. Please Pandora...I love ya ! Figure this out. Oh yeah, thanx.

Posted by: Thomas Austin at June 21, 2007 12:04 AM

So any idea when this will be released for the Upstage? I want pandora on it soooo bad.

Posted by: Joey at June 21, 2007 10:38 AM

Log another vote for the Sprint Treo 755p!!!

Posted by: Damon at July 2, 2007 06:04 AM

Yes - it would be terrific to listen on the Treo 755p. I've ordered about 10 cds of artists I've discovered thanks to Pandora, but they haven't arrived yet. I'm here at work late, and my work pc has no sound card - I really miss Pandora.

Posted by: Mark at July 3, 2007 10:04 PM

Please get this going on the Sanyo M1 asap.

The better Sprint music phones should be supported first.

Posted by: C.Carr at July 5, 2007 03:45 PM

Ok, now that we can breathe a sigh of relief with the internet radio fees being taken off the table, can you please get back on track and release Pandora for the UpStage!!! pretty please!!! Thanks!!!!!!

Posted by: Carlos at July 13, 2007 01:53 PM

Pandora works and sounds very good on my Sanyo M1 in Portland, Oregon.

Well worth the price. Excellent job.

Posted by: C.Carr at July 18, 2007 10:47 PM

I just got Pandora for my Sprint LG-LX570 Musiq phone, & it's great.

It would be even better if you could:

1) Add a clock to the Pandora screen.

Otherwise, I can't use my cell phone as a watch any more. I really don't want to go back to the days of wearing a watch.

2) Enable support for built-in FM transmitters.

The LG Musiq has a built-in FM transmitter. Normally, with music playback from my microSD card, I press the "menu" softkey and then select "music transmitter on." However, the built-in FM transmitter won't currently work with Pandora, since your "menu" option doesn't link to the phone's FM transmitter.

3) Intermittent Sprint network problems (this is really a Sprint issue).

Otherwise, it's perfect!!!

Thanks,
Ron

"but the Palm OS is a bit tricky"

Sounds like a lame excuse to me. That's like saying Java coding is a bit tricky just because I've never worked with it before. I don't buy it. I think it's just laziness. Prove me wrong, eh?

Posted by: Sea Man at August 30, 2007 10:34 AM

Any updates on Treos with Palm OS?

Posted by: chris at October 15, 2007 04:12 PM

One more vote for the treo (650). Generally, people that own treos are interested in and stay up-to-date on the add-ons to their phone. They are technically savy and frankly enjoy having their devise a one stop multimedia powerhouse. I think if you put the resources in to add treo to your list of covered phones, you'll see a lot of instant sign-ups.

Posted by: myles at October 29, 2007 09:27 PM

I can't wait for a Windows Mobile version to come out, keep up the great work guys :D

Posted by: Ian at October 31, 2007 01:13 PM

I vote for palm treo as well. We are tech savy and in my case it is one of the few phones I can use due to a program my phone that I use at work....help get treo on the list.

Posted by: wade at November 1, 2007 01:42 PM

I can access Pandora on my Treo 650 using Opera Mini. Unfortunately, even though I'm in the US using the Sprint network, Pandora thinks my ip address is coming from Norway. With the current licensing "clarifications" this is no bueno.

Posted by: Dank at November 9, 2007 09:40 AM

"Pandora for Sprint you get the full Pandora experience, but in the palm of your hand anywhere you want to listen."
It's not in my Palm as long as it's not in my Palm Treo!!
Hurry up Pandora! Gotta have it on my Treo. Do we have any news if/when Treo will be supported?

Posted by: ammbd at November 28, 2007 04:24 PM

Posted by: Steven at December 4, 2007 12:27 AM

Posted by: David Dearie at December 11, 2007 01:18 PM

Posted by: Sea Man at December 12, 2007 03:57 PM

Just a bump on this thread in support of Pandora for Palm OS. Since my post on June 11, 2007, I've upgraded my Treo 650 for a Centro. Needless to say, I still want Pandora bad! Please keep at it!!

One more vote to get pandora on a treo. Can't be that tricky.

Posted by: pandora.on.my.treo at January 8, 2008 03:23 PM

Tim Conrad wrote nine months ago, in May of 2007: "@pete -- We're working on a Windows Mobile version so stay tuned on that front."

Great, you know, cause it's so much more efficient to write a client for every *single* individual Sprint and AT&T device than to actually write a client for an OS. Meanwhile it's nearly 9 months later and y'all are still operating in phone-by-phone mode. Bleh.

Anyway, I've got an HTC Kaiser (Tilt 8295). When you get done writing the client for the 8525 and the P4351 I look forward to using your service.

Staying tuned...

Support for the 755p !!! yea btw 755p is a palm OS device not windows as stated before.

Posted by: Dave at January 17, 2008 04:26 PM

Yes another vote of support for Pandora on the Centro. It is a GREAT device, young (not too young) and hip users. Pandora would be perfect on the Centro. Perfect Match.

Posted by: BenjaminNYC at January 21, 2008 02:33 PM

I realize this may be a breach of etiquette, but Last.fm, which is open source, has a Windows Mobile client for both Pocket PCs and Smartphones. Guess that's the benefit of Open Source.

http://www.last.fm/group/Last.fm+Mobile/forum/72341/_/364250

Anyway, I'm in the process of migrating over to Last.fm from Pandora. Love the rating engine; not a big fan of the runaround... Sorry but 9 months to market means someone is going to eat your lunch.

Posted by: ibc at January 24, 2008 07:34 AM

^^ What Dave said. I would love Pandora support on my Centro

Posted by: Lunatrik at January 25, 2008 08:24 AM

Hey guys, I've been a huge fan of pandora for years now, and in reading through this comment spread, its really disheartening to learn you still haven't made your site available to windows mobile users... It doesn't seem it would be that difficult to create a midlet for the service, especially if you have the functionality available on different phones..

Can you make the programs/code available to non-supported device users so we can have a crack at getting it to work on our phones. ( I have an HTC 8525)

Posted by: Jake at February 1, 2008 05:26 PM

Do you guys even listen/care to what people have to say here? I mean, a little update would be nice. I'm on Palm, but a lot of Windows Mobile users want a client too.

What's up? Give a dog a bone, eh?

Posted by: Juli at May 1, 2008 07:46 AM

I have to agree with some of the previous posters. Why are you not writing a Java Midlet to run on a bunch of devices? Why has there been no update on the Windows Mobile client? For that matter, why has there been no response at all for some time?

If you can not move with the speed of the the game, get out! Obviously with all of these people clamoring for the service, it only means PROFIT for Pandora. Why wouldnt you want to capitalize on that market? If you dont, some one else will!! Business people!

Hi Yvan -

Just making sure you saw this comment from Tom Conrad, Pandora CTO, on the iPhone blog post:

"Believe me, our goal is to bring Pandora to as many phones as possible -- in fact we support almost 30 different phones right now. We love Windows Mobile every bit as much as that "other phone." The truth is that the Windows Mobile world is much more complicated than the iPhone -- tens of different handsets with different keyboards, screens, input types (some touch, some not), etc. That means it's not nearly as simple as creating a single application that will satisfy a large audience. That said, we're hard at work on it and hope to have some news on that front later this year.

-Tom"

Also posted by Tom:

"Note: Pandora is currently available on approximately 30 other mobile phones. Check http://www.pandora.com/on-the-go to see if your phone is currently supported. While we're not ready to talk specifically about timing, for those of you with smartphones from other vendors please know that we haven't forgotten about you and we're hard at work on versions of Pandora for your phone too. Stay tuned!"

Thanks everybody who's commented, for your patience!

I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere on these blogs that someone with my exact telephone has gotten this to work. Any help please? Thanks,

Pandora is the only place I can listen to music I like anymore all the time. XM is OK most of the time but FM is just awful.

Another pleading request for Pandora on the Palm platform! Please!!

Posted by: Wade at October 15, 2008 07:20 AM

Hey Pandora,
How about making a Pandora application for TouchFlo, the HTC frontend for Windows Mobile applications? I assume it shouldn't be too hard as all HTC TouchFlo machines act the same. (I want to say it should be simliar to the Iphone's app but I'm not sure from a technical standpoint). HTC TouchFlo has their own applications such like the iphone, for example YouTube and such.
Please let us know what you think about that

I'd love to stream Pandora on my Palm Centro!

Another vote for Palm OS, please...Palm rocks, only please don't make it carrier specific but OS specific as I have a Palm T|X with Wi-Fi and so make it for stand alone handhelds as well!

Thanks!

I would love to have Pandora on my new Blackberry...it'll be one reason I'll stop wishing I got an iPhone b/c of all its free apps. That's another question though, if they bring Pandora to the Blackberry (specifically Sprint ones), are they going to charge for it? If they do, THAT would decrease users.

Another vote for Palm OS. I have a Treo 680, and would love to have Pandora on it. I would even pay for it! Seriously, I love Pandora that much. Rarely even listen to my own music anymore. That is, unless I'm in my car, in which case I listen to music off my Treo from the SD card, but would MUCH rather have Pandora!

Posted by: FAB at November 21, 2008 08:10 PM

Thanks folks! The short answer is that Pandora is always gearing up to release on another mobile platform. It's hard to give an ETA on things like this as it takes much time, programming, and paperwork but do stay tuned!

Hi Ramon,

I totally understand your concern and I wanted to take your comment as a chance to mention something about Pandora. A lot of listeners have mentioned feeling snubbed or ignored because Pandora is not yet available through their mobile devices. And we DO hear these concerns! As much as we would like Pandora available on all these devices, these things take time. And we do appreciate your patience as our small but superlatively talented tech team makes sure each update and mobile release exceeds expectations. Take care and Happy Tuesday... I'm pretty happy today because my dog survived a car accident yesterday! He's a tough little guy...

I submit to you that the majority of this response was meaningless fluff.

In May '07, people were calling for WM and Palm versions of the software, and it was said by Tom that the whole situation was being looked into. Now, as late as December '08, the iPhone has already been supported, and the others left behind. After 19 months of nothing, your "small but superlatively talented tech team" has also proven itself to also be incredibly slow. How difficult can this truly be if someone is actually looking into it with any respectable amount of effort? The Palm OS really isn't *that* difficult to work with. On my Centro I can watch any variety of video, local and streaming, and listen to streaming radio over a non-3G connection while downloading other data in the background... so what's the prior excuse regarding codec difficulty all about? What exactly is it that the writers of mOcean and PocketTunes have mastered that your team can't figure out? You have an entire community of highly motivated developers out here that are willing to put in the effort if they were given something to go on. There's really no worthy excuse at this point.

While AT&T has been pulling on their collective antennas to deal with the iPhone 3G data load, there's no reason why even a beta version of a Palm or WM port hasn't surfaced.

If you want us to believe that your company is working on this, we need to see something other than empty words.

Posted by: Mateo at January 5, 2009 01:53 PM

@Mateo--sorry you feel this way. I can't emphasize enough how much time, money, and effort it takes to get Pandora on a new platform, not to mention negotiations with the providers. Our sincere goal is to bring Pandora to as many devices as possible, period. Take care all and happy new year.

-A

Posted by: Alee-Listener Advocate at January 6, 2009 08:24 PM

I have to agree with Mateo on this one. You guys(pandora) should just say you have no plans to have this on a Palm OS. The Iphone came out well after the Treo 650. If you guys can have 2 new updates for the Iphone and not been able to produce even a beta for the treo..I believe you guys are just blowing smoke. The PR spin is pathetic

I can't get Pandora to connect on my Sprint Moto Q 9c. Anyone else with this problem?

Posted by: tracer at January 9, 2009 09:40 PM

I appreciate that Pandora is working hard. My vote is for the Palm Treo 755p too. You see, it’s not just Pandora that snubs us; it’s a lot of programs and applications that don’t work with the Treo. I remember how pumped I was for he NFL network. However, I found myself on a subway watching a kid view the game on his crappy flip phone when it was still currently unavailable on my Treo. WTF?! We’ve all spent a lot of money on what we thought was an incredibly cool phone… it’s annoying to see a phone we could have purchased for a significantly less amount of money function without a problem. Not to mention, the more I see people with the iPhone, the more I grind my teeth at my purchase. Please put some more effort into the Treo. If AT&T ever pay for the Sprint cancellation fee I'll be switching.

Thanks.

Posted by: Jason at January 15, 2009 09:31 AM

My Centro needs Pandora!!! Of course, by the time you guys roll it out, I'll have likely upgraded to the Pre with a whole new OS that Pandora probably won't work with. I have to admit I am a more than a bit skeptical that you are still actively and aggressively working on developing it for the Palm OS given that for all intents and purposes the Palm OS is probably nearing the end of its life cycle (i.e., as soon as the Pre is officially released). Like the others, I love Pandora, but we just would like to hear the truth about whether it realistically will ever be available for our particular phone.

And as for watching football games on the NFL network & other stations on your palm phone, I have one word for you:

Slingbox

Works like a charm on my Centro, and you're not limited to just the NFL network.

Posted by: Pete at January 15, 2009 03:00 PM

@Chris -- we've started looking at the Treo too, but the Palm OS is a bit tricky. We'll see what we can do.

I see no other phone with as many users who are craving pandora.

This is just ridiculous.

Posted by: centro user at January 26, 2009 10:28 PM

Just wanted to put my vote in for the Centro as well. I love Pandora and streaming PTunes just doesn't stack up against Pandora's goodness.

Though, you do have my sympathy... I've developed some small personal Palm Apps before and from the experience I've gotten from that... I'm sure that a Pandora client is not easy.

But, I'm cheering for your devs to get it worked out!

Another vote to have Pandora developed for the Centro!

Posted by: Bryan at January 29, 2009 10:34 AM

I have to say, I fell in love with Pandora just like everyone else. I have lost interest though, because of the incompatibility with my Centro, which I use for just about everything. I too am very skeptical, not believing that it truly takes this long to come up with a solution. But I will say that I am having the same kind of issues with my laptop, which runs on windows 64 bit, nothing is compatible, and everyone still seems to be "working" on solutions. I'm not a very technical person, so maybe there is more to this than I realize. All I know is that when once I listened to Pandora every day, I haven't listened to it in quite some time. I wonder how many more Centro/Palm lover's will gradually lose interest, there are thousands of potential loyal customers that are being shut out. Not a very good marketing strategy if you ask me.

Posted by: DEW at January 29, 2009 08:58 PM

Hi folks,

Just checking in with everyone as it's been a minute!

I want to apologize to those who feel left in the rain with their Pandora-less devices. Our development team is a small, hard-working band of folks with a never-ending to-do list of devices to reach and revisions to existing apps.

But getting Pandora to new devices doesn't completely hinge on them either. Their are the manufacturers and carriers involved with bringing Pandora to a new device and we make a point of working with them when we offer you this service.

Again, sorry for the hold up. Hope everyone has a pleasant weekend--the Bay is looking beautiful lately...

Would love to see Pandora work on Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. I have the HTC Wizard (which in my opinion is STILL an excellent phone), on the AT&T network (Cingular 8125)....this phone can do anything...and there are lots of them still out there by early adopters!

Posted by: meg at February 1, 2009 02:05 PM

after reading the posts here, It seems this is useless but I will put my two cents in. I have a treo 755p, my wife has a centro. So I vote for the palm os. It is truly hard to believe, considering the percentage of posts here that are asking for palm os support, and for how long it has been going on, that there is any intent to make pandora avaialble. if it where carrier issues, would both verizion and sprint have an issue? sprint already has multiple models running pandora. Would palm be against allowing a program that made there phones more user friendly? That made there customers even more loyal? Palm os users love there phones/ devices. Period. We, I, love finding new uses and being able to use this one device for everything. I have noticed that the new palm web os phone, the palm pre will be able to run pandora. Maybe this is what happened. Pandora developed a program to allow the new palm to run, and has decided it isn't worth supporting the 10's of thousands of palm devices that are being used everyday to stream music, video, television, you tube, ect. its not that hard for me to believe, I hope I am wrong.

Posted by: porfirio at March 14, 2009 06:09 PM

Why hasn't a client for the PalmOS been released? Hmm... let's think this one through. Pandora has content limited by restrictive agreements as to both delivery and storage to which it must adhere. Unlike other devices, the Treo line of devices is designed for ease of extension. PalmOS is open source and apps written for it are very easy to crack and hack.

Are we to believe that Pandora can't, after TWO YEARS time, port their app to PalmOS? I don't buy it.

Pandora is a partner with Palm in the development of apps for the upcoming Pre. The technology is purely standard web 2.0. Pandora will be able to control the end product with far greater ease.

I'm not holding my breath waiting for a Treo compatible app. I've resigned myself to waiting for the Pre. It's been over two years; several more months isn't anything. It sucks but what can we do? ::sighs::

Posted by: anonymous coward at March 15, 2009 12:39 PM

I would love to see Pandora become available for the HTC Touch Pro. I am curious what the issue is exactly -Is it the "TouchFLO 3D" that is the issue? -Or is it the "Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro OS"? -Or is it the "VGA resolution 2.8in. TFT-LCD touch-screen"? -Or is it that there are relatively few people (myself included) that purchased this super-Pocket-PC/SmartPhone that has the power to do almost anything you could possibly want, that makes it low on the priority list?
Or more simply, what sets WindowsMobile devices apart from one another -in terms of why some can support Pandora (typically the ones with less powerful processors), and others (with more than enough processor speed and system memory to go around) can't?

Posted by: chris at April 8, 2009 08:49 AM

Pandora won't play on my Sprint Mogul anymore. I used it heavily up until about 4-5 days ago. Since then I try to connect everyday but the program refuses to connect. Tried a clean install of Pandora and still won't play. I wonder if Sprint shut it down from their end. Competes with Sprint Radio maybe?

Anyone have this problem???

Why don't you release a VGA Windows mobile for sprint? You released the VGA version for the Touch Pro on AT&T, but locked it to the provider. I'd gladly subscribe to pandora (pay) if you guys would release the VGA sprint version already. If you are all too busy just release the source to XDA developers or PPC geeks, they would have it done in a week.

Wow, what a call for palm! Here's another voice :) . I've got a Palm Centro for Verizon, so I'd love a Pandora solution that's compatible with any of those. I think a Palm App would be extremely handsome, and would allow for streaming ads, too, y'know, 'cause monetizing it is important :) .

Posted by: Preston at June 3, 2009 10:08 AM

Would also love to see thi on my 755p. I also use and hack on the HTC devices such as the Touch pro. Pandora works well on a TP with a few tweaks. The 755p is an EVDO device on sprint so it should have no problem streaming a pretty good bitrate.

Posted by: Morgan at June 4, 2009 05:12 AM

Ok... i have the Treo 755p and the HTC Touch Pro and nothing!!! none of those SPRINT phones yet? what kind of lame and lazy programmers you have. it takes less than 2 months to create a frontend for any of those OS...

Not having Pandora gave me serious pause, but as much as I love you guys (and have for years), I couldn't rationalize spending another $100 or more on a Pandora compatible phone when the Centro had everything else I needed.
