Play Listen Repeat Vol. 1

plr_header_blue.gif
As Pandora's music curator, my main job is to select the music that goes into Pandora. I'm constantly listening to new bands, researching genres for back catalog, reading books, and searching high and low for music that looks and sounds like it's worth discovering.

There's so much music here, though, that I sometimes lose track of the records I selected, even if it was something I was really dying to hear! They come in to the office, get analyzed, and sneak into the library stacks before I can snag 'em. Sad, I know.

So, in the spirit of trying to catch the ones that got away, I want to know what you listeners have discovered, rediscovered, or have just been listening to in Pandora.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: list your top 3 Pandora discoveries, and what station led you to them.

Mine are:

ChicoBuarque.jpg

Chico Buarque (first heard on Caetano Veloso Radio)

MotherMallard.jpg

Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. (first heard on Brian Eno Radio, I think)

RayWylieHubbard.JPG

Ray Wylie Hubbard (first heard on Tom Heyman Radio)

(And just for fun, here's a station from my top 3 discoveries: Chico's Mallard: Wylie Radio.

best,
mz

ps - thanks to everyone who suggested names a while back. We have a winner! Thanks to Dom for the clear, concise and to-the-point "Play, Listen, Repeat."

Well, I pretty much exclusively listen to my main station here: http://www.pandora.com/people/azhrarn-pandora (which consists of every song or artist I can think of that I like) And I've bought a handful of CDs from Amazon that I first heard there.

Off the top of my head, the last few artists I can think of that Pandora led me to are:

Zeromancer
Gogol Bordello (which I still need to get a CD of)
and Samael

There's a lot more as well, thanks for helping me find them. :)

Fake edit: Oops, looks like the urls to the artist links were stripped.

Chico Buarque is amazing. He did a live album with Maria Bethania and a full orchestra back in the mid-'70s -- '75, maybe -- that... wow... it's just so good.

Posted by: Kevin Seal at January 9, 2007 11:57 AM

Oh, right, to answer your question. My top 3 Pandora discoveries:

Ghost of Monkshood
... (Oklahoman Elephant Sixey psych-pop)

Rapider Than Horsepower
... (scary Jesus Lizardy odd-time rock from Illinois)

Latyrx
... (inventive mid-'90s hip hop featuring Lyrics Born)

This Pandora.com music is Fantastic! I love gospel and it has allowed me to worship and praise the Lord all day long while I'm working. Thank you so much, this great music continues to enhance my day!

My top three new artist discoveries:

Natalie MacMaster

Hayley West

Peter Ostroushko

thanks for helping me discover new artists! :)

I'm going to be lazy here and just put down artists I've been introduced to and bought CD's from since I heard them on Pandora:

Mary Gauthier -- Bluesy great alternative country
Rockapella -- A Capella pop, great arrangements
Eliades Ochoa -- Cuban guitar and vocal, a master

Thanks a million, great stuff.

Posted by: Edith at January 9, 2007 02:29 PM

Ben Folds found on Jamie Cullum Radio

Theresa Sokyrka found on Diana Krall Radio

Tony Furtado found on my son's Led Zeppelin Radio

Posted by: Tom Constantine at January 9, 2007 03:35 PM

Hey Erik, Kevin, Jannwa, Edith, and Tom,

It's cool to see some unfamiliar names on your lists. I'm checking out Theresa Sokyrka, Latyrx, and some of the others.

best,
mz

Posted by: Michael Zapruder at January 9, 2007 03:41 PM

Willy Porter, particularly Angry Words, found on Matt Nathanson Radio

The entirely underated song "Can't Stop Now" by Coldplay on Ben Folds Radio

Gabe Dixon Band (could be the strongest band I've heard in a while) on Ben Folds Radio

Posted by: Cliff C at January 9, 2007 04:27 PM

Rather new to Pandora, so my sample size is small, but it's been great. I used to listen to 3wk.com years ago in search of the ideal music site, but don't see any reason to go back.

Using Joy Division as the initial seed, I've come across a number of bands I've added.

Top 3 'discoveries' that Pandora has brought forth for me:

Skeletal Family
Hot Snakes
Impossible Shapes

Good mix of dark, dissonant, driving bass, with some garage overtones.

Great job.

Posted by: TJ Sarfi at January 9, 2007 05:40 PM

John Reuben. I had never heard of him before but I hear his song "The Boy vs. the Cynic" and I liked it so much I bought the whole album.

Muse. Another great group that somehow I manged to miss.

Most of the cool music I discover with Pandora comes from my customized "The Killers" radio station.

Posted by: David at January 9, 2007 05:47 PM

Just three? Yikes. Let me think back to my earliest days of Pandora-ing (almost a year):

Discovered: VNV Nation.
Re-discovered: Bill Nelson.
Just been listening to: A lot more Led Zepplin.

I have one main station (Before the sale) which is intentionally chaotic. My other station is for testing artists before I tip them into the mix.

I have been buying individual songs from i-Tunes when I can, but their library is a lot smaller. Where's that portable Pandora device dagnabit?

Posted by: Jay at January 9, 2007 06:52 PM

My 3 (but not only) discoveries:

1- Nightwish, an amazing goth metal band
2- Dragonforce, one of Pandora's recommendation
3- Elvenking, folk metal

Posted by: Lek at January 10, 2007 02:31 AM

While I listen "pcm RockProgresivo Radio"

http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh137906254512372306

I've redicovered great artist like that:

Andreas Vollenweider
Premiata Forneria Marconi
Emerson, Lake & Palmer

whose music I listened many years ago.

I'd have to say my three are:

1) Pendulum - from my D&B station (based on Genre: Drum & Bass)

2) Above & Beyond - from my Dance station (based on Tiesto & Armin van Buuren)

3)tie between The Donnas & Little Big Town

Posted by: Mark at January 10, 2007 06:46 AM

Rammstein
-- on my own station named Slow, started from Artists Seeds: Lacrimosa ,Sigur Ros

Elis
Darkwell
-- both from my Female Vocal station, started from Nightwish, After Forever

And I want to add one more rediscovered: Pandora.

I had tried Pandora about 1 year ago. However, I gave up quickly, since it can't even find out Blind Guardian. Now I am back, not only for Blind Guardian, but also for dozens of bands I loved and dozens of bands that I don't know I will love, yet.

Posted by: megu at January 10, 2007 07:04 AM

My top three Pandora discoveries:
Moodorama
I am Jen
Hybrid

Before Pandora my musical palette was limited at best. I've found so many artists. Pandora has so much that's "love at first listen"!

Posted by: Joshua Seigler at January 10, 2007 07:18 AM

Oh also, ditto David's comment on the portable device. Hurry up already!

Posted by: Joshua Seigler at January 10, 2007 07:20 AM

Love the site

Posted by: Sarah Holston at January 10, 2007 09:43 AM

It's not easy to name only 3 bands, but I'll name:
- Epica
- The Crest
- Elis
All of them starting from a radio built on Nightwish.

Posted by: Francesco at January 10, 2007 09:52 AM

Hmm...
De Novo Dahl
The Anniversary
Headlights

wow, that's a great name for a blog!

Posted by: Dom at January 10, 2007 11:09 AM

I can only think of one band that I have really loved... Discovered on my own "Radio Hamster"...

Flyleaf

I've since aquired their album and listened a lot to it.. it's all good(as far as I'm concerned)

ps. Hamster means exactly the same in English as it means in Norwegian

2nd ps. I also know I'm not really supposed to listen to Pandora, but it's just too great! ;)

Posted by: matsr at January 10, 2007 11:57 AM

My top three:

Autumn's Grey Solace (Julee Cruise radio)
Chantal Kreviazuk (The Waterboys radio)
Embrace (The Waterboys radio)

and for good measure, I'll throw in

Coastal (from Magellan Radio, seeded by a Mike Oldfield track)

- Alan -

Posted by: Alan Beale at January 11, 2007 05:37 AM

I love Pandora, its the best thing that has ever happened to music in the internet. I have discovered new genres and bands I have never heard of. Especially because those bands are sometimes so underground that its really impossible to find or hear about them here in Mexico.

My top 3 discoveries (there are more, but I think these are the most interesting because I didnt even know much about that genre):

Fingathing (originally heard in Dj shadow station)

Treva Whateva (I couldnt find it =(. I love the bouncing bomb track though)

Dj Baby Anne (I think it was prodigy)

There are a lot more, funny thing is that my favorite genre is not even on this list (nu metal, I like bands like linkin park, celldweller, orgy, slipknot.. just to name a few.

Posted by: FLaKes at January 11, 2007 08:34 AM

I really only have one main station (WRAH)
My top three discovered artists:

- The Kingsbury Manx
- Diane Cluck
- Six Organs of Admittance

And I've bought albums by all of them through eMusic. The two services are a divine pairing.

Posted by: Ryan at January 11, 2007 11:14 AM

I found Pandora a couple of months back and I've been trying to get all my friends there ever since!

I listen to a very wide range of music but I have to say my top 3 new finds are:

Sleep (Jedi Mind Tricks station)
Andy Caldwell (Koop station)
Gary Puckett & The Union Gap (Andy Williams station)

Keep up the good work!

Posted by: Markus at January 11, 2007 11:52 AM

My Top 3 would have to be:

- Vienna Teng (seeded by a host of different artists amongst which are Missy Higgins, Lizz Wright and Lucie Silvas)
- John Auer (seeded mostly by the Dave Matthews Band, I believe)
- Daughtry (probably seeded by VAST)

I love Pandora! Keep up the good work guys, this is definately the best thing to hit music since the invention of mp3 :)

Posted by: Aeternus at January 11, 2007 12:32 PM

My top three discoveries are from a variety of stations, so I can't really pin down any influences. I don't really listen to any popular music stations, so in some cases my discoveries were well known elsewhere.

Francine
The New Pornographers
Regina Spektor

Obscure top three

The Arts And Sciences
Citizens Here And Abroad
Letters To Cleo

Posted by: Tony at January 11, 2007 02:16 PM

I've found so much music on Pandora--it's a miracle I can still pay my rent. Here are 3 of many:

Portastatic (I almost forgot that I first heard them here--on my "Smart Fellows Radio")

Jesus H. Christ and The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse (on "Nerdy Boys Radio")

Some By Sea (On "Smart Fellows Radio")

And there's always Michael Zapruder's Rain of Frogs...

Posted by: Alyssa at January 11, 2007 03:37 PM

I've been going through and listening to everyone's finds, and I must say it makes me feel pretty great about what we're doing here. So many great bands.

I see a bunch of bands that I know and love: Diane Cluck, Six Organs, Impossible Shapes, Ghosts of Monkshood, and on and on

It's also amazing to see so many names that are (almost) new to me. There's so much music out there! Or should I say "in here"?

keep em coming!
best,
mz

Posted by: Michael Zapruder at January 11, 2007 03:48 PM

Listen to a variety of stations depending on my mood at the time, but my 3 discoveries are:

Within Temptation
Flyleaf
Theatre Of Tragedy

I see Flyleaf is also mentioned in one of the posts above - I must get the album.
Luckily Pandora hasn't been discovered yet by the kiljoys running the censorware on the network - it keeps me sane at work.

Posted by: John at January 12, 2007 03:00 AM

Guitar Shorty would be number 1. I saw him in concert here in Topeka, KS last year, and my Guitar Shorty station has been a revelation.

George Thorogood-Great to hear stuff from the new album. I'll have to end up buying that one.

Bernie Williams-More than a great baseball, a darn good jazz guitar player.

Posted by: News2Know at January 12, 2007 07:23 AM

one over all
THE RAT PACK "BOYS NIGHT'S OUT"
ON FRANK SINATRA RADIO

Posted by: ratatian at January 12, 2007 01:12 PM

Ulrich Schnauss
Assemblage 23
Chemical Brothers

These have become some of my favorite artists! I don't know what I'd do without Pandora. Keep it up!

My top three discoveries:

1. Within Temptation -- Great symphonic metal band. I've been trying to find more bands with a female vocalist, and this band doesn't disappoint.
(Originally found on my 'Dark Vocal Radio'--seeded by Nightwish and Evanescence)

2. Flyleaf -- Great Christian band with *unique* lyrics. I love their vocalist, too.
(Found either on my Dark Vocal Radio or Barlow Girl Radio. Not sure which.)

3. Charlotte Martin -- A girl and her piano. Boy, can she sing, and she can play the piano even better.
(Originaly found on my Vanessa Carlton radio, I believe.)

Posted by: Morwen at January 12, 2007 10:06 PM

I love Pandora.

The fine and beautiful people working there helped me find:

Lungfish - if you like repetative guitars..and you do.
McLusky - the smartest hard punk i've ever heard.
Kruder&Dorfmeister - lovely lounge d'n'b.

..all of which are now bringing happiness into my life. Thank you Pandora.

Posted by: Martin at January 14, 2007 04:42 AM

I have primarily used pandora as an exploration into 'old' music, finding the 'roots' of the music i like.
Started out with Stations like The Doors and Led Zeppelin.

From those my first rediscovery was made:

Jimi Hendrix - havent heard much of his music before pandora reintroduced him to me.

Also Cream has been discovered through pandora.

I know it is some major figures in the history of music, but i would'nt have experienced that without pandora. thx :)

Last of my discoveries were Melvin Taylor, great blues, and from there on i have actually been hooked on blues and jazz, music i have never really listened to before.

Posted by: Philip at January 15, 2007 01:42 AM

I'm newly loving:

Roman Candle
Ben Kweller
Paolo Nutini

and I'm still looking

Posted by: MGT at January 15, 2007 07:02 AM

I've loved goofin with this for the last 2 days straight.

Top picks:
ripplegroove
RJD2-p.s. he's got an unrelease instrumental album that is excellent
and if you got time try and find Jimi Hendrix- the apartment jams of 1968, my favorite jimi all time, its all raw just jimi and a guitar.

Cheer on the quality of all of this music

Momus
Plainsong
The Action

And these are just three I remembered just now. There's more!

Absolutely LOVE Pandora, keep up the great work guys!

3. 'Gotan project' music :)

Cheers and happy listening!!!

Hard to pick 3, but:
-Daikaiju, from "Man or Astroman?"
-(The) Boswell Sisters, probably from "twangy boogie woogie" or "assorted fun", likely due to The Andrews Sisters
-Dexter Gordon, from "Thelonious Monk & Sonny Rollins" (new to me, anyway- wow!)

Three of the many artists that I have discovered on Pandora are:

Scout Niblett (I ordered two albums; one arrived today!): she was most likely discovered on Mary Timony Radio. At least that where she is now.

Songs:Ohia (I ordered one album so far; Coxcomb Red is an amazing song): I think he came off of Devendra Banhart Radio or maybe Joanna Newsom.

Regina Spektor (This was one of the first artists I found on here; I heard That Time and just about died; 1 album owned now): I believe she appeared on my Mary Timony station or perhaps Bjork.

I find that I like about 3 out of every 4 songs at this point. And I'm pretty picky and specific.

So thanks.

Posted by: brandie madrid at January 18, 2007 12:32 AM

I've discovered a lot of songs, some bands and remembered some groups as for three I would list the following three are the best discoveries or re-discoveries

1)Fields Of The Nephilim (re-discovery)
2)Now it's overhead
3)Working For A Nuclear Free City

Posted by: Robert at January 18, 2007 12:11 PM

Wow ! It's been a great time since a started listening to Pandora ! Here are my 3 "discoveries".

- The song "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo", by Bebel Gilberto and Cazuza. A great, simple, powerful, romantic, acoustic song.

- Celso Fonseca, a new bossa nova guitarist and singer.

- Rodrigo y Gabriela, a Mexican acoustic guitar duo playing some dirty rock music (try their acoustic version of Orion by Metallica).

And thanks for the other discoveries (past and to come) !

Posted by: Nicolas at January 19, 2007 07:21 AM

This website is a great music station, I love it.. Thanks to the people behind this.

Posted by: Phillip at January 22, 2007 03:38 AM

Oh so many bands and artists discovered!
Most recently, Kimya Dawson. She has the most adorable voice. Found on Insect Eyes Radio, I think.

Miranda Sex Garden, their album Madras. It's beautiful...old english folk/opera/whatever. So good for unwinding after a long day!
My favorite discovery as of recently, Because (Love Version) by the Beatles. One of my favorite Beatles songs already, but upon hearing the version from Love, I've fallen into it again. Beautiful.
Those last two were from Hide and Seek Radio.

Posted by: Katie at January 24, 2007 11:10 AM

I discovered much great music and also my favourite band. My top 3 is:

1. The Sounds (My favourite band, I got both CDs)
2. Surferosa (makes me get up in the morning)
3. The Weepies/Metric/(insert other pandora findings)

It's really great! I'm buying much more, a lot more CDs then I used to!

Posted by: whaha at January 24, 2007 11:57 AM

Leave me to say to you that have the best work or job of the world, the quantity of bands is incredible that and overdrafts thanks to you. I love the jazz and and had the opportunity to know versions and very beautiful tracks.

Sorry for my ¿gramatic?(Grammar), I am from Argentina and do not handle very well the written English. Thank you for everything.

Posted by: lucas at January 25, 2007 12:07 PM

I really hope you're gonna read this. If you really like Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque, try to listen to Tom Jobim too. He was a brazilian genius and was responsible for the great boom of Bossa Nova throughout the globe. If you don't know him, give it a try, you'll probably like it!

Posted by: Bruno Dantas at January 25, 2007 06:59 PM

all artists come from my "main" station, radio w.t.z - http://www.pandora.com/stations/9caf23038d39ad6b8a1e904b5dddeb47ee56ad17f84d5fe3

1) bonobo - smart downtempo / chillout
2) susumu yokota - japanese experimental ambient / electronica
3) nuspirit helsinki - contemplative finnish nu-jazz
4) deadly avenger - like a superb soundtrack to a film - cinematic might be the right word.

many thanks for these and others, also many "re-discovered" (specially on my friends' stations), as this seems to be often one of the main benefits.

Posted by: AdaMM at January 28, 2007 01:29 PM

Muse ( i now own all of their cd's)
Kamelot (the Black Halo album is awesome)
Flyleaf (from my Evanescence station)
