CMJ Wrap-Up

We had a great time, and all the music is still fresh in my mind! Here's a rundown on the highlights of the rest of my CMJ trip:

My vote for most stimulating band of the fest goes to the humble yet all-encompassing postmodern americana of the great Califone . I made a special effort to make this show, and I'm so glad I did. This band covers so much ground, creatively, without ever sounding contrived or overly intellectual. Well worth checking out on Pandora, and when they come to your town.

The most interesting band I saw was Pattern is Movement, who play a kind of math-y post-rock that's somehow both baroque and lean. Their records are delicious sounding as well, produced as they are by the great Scott Solter.

I was incredibly pleased by the set I heard from piano-chanteuse Casey Dienel. Her songs were like short stories; or like miniature epics, if there could be such a thing. Vivid imagery, great piano playing, humor, and the like... Excellent.

I also enjoyed:

Willie Mason

Angela Desveaux

Pit er Pat

And finally, much love for the retro-brits in Mohair.

So many bands, so little time...

until next time!

cheers,

I sit at a computer all day ... tedious job, you know what I'm talking about ... have listened to lots of free music online, but Pandora is the best, hands down. Congratulations and thank you.

I like new talent from around the country.

I'm the guy everyone goes to for new tunes and to find stuff they would like. Pandora does a million times a better job than I could ever do. I love it! I would also really love a non-browser based player. It doesn't have to be a standalone app, a yahoo widget or maybe a mini-app for google desktop would be great.
