CMJ Day Two
So far so good. We had our first night of CMJ shows last night, and it did not disappoint. In fact, the fact that it was Halloween made it all the more special, as you'll see with the nice pics below...
The night turned out to be good, but it started out with a whimper, I'm afraid, since the show we were curious about at Arlene's Grocery turned out to have been canceled. I was sad for about 10 minutes, as we had skipped Keren Ann and Suzanne Vega for it, but the fact that 70 bands were playing within about a 7 block radius quickly turned things around.
We headed over to Piano's to see the chaotic and joyful Birdmonster, who would eventually win my costume-of-the-night contest. The lead singer nailed the circa 1984 Bruce Springsteen look, and the bass player looked exactly like Prince. It was eerie, I tell you. Check out this pic and you'll see what I mean.

We got to Piano's in time to see Run Run Run, an LA band, and to catch the entire set by Monsters Are Waiting, an LA-based band that pairs a kind of dark shoegazer vibe with simple, satisfying underlying songs. Their music is dreamy, sexy, and very hypnotic. Think Cars, but with a healthy twist of reverb. A delight.
I headed over to Sin-e after that to see the last few songs by Heavens, which is a side project of Matt Skiba from the Alkaline Trio. Descriptors: elegant, sleek, 80's-inspired, good. Plus he was dressed like Warhol:

Nice.
That's a smattering. More tomorrow. Until then,
cheers from cmj,
mz

I hate it when people post product feedbacks on unrelated blogs, but in this case I feel like I have no choice (is that a valid excuse?). Anyway, I have seen dozens of songs being replayed on my station after I have marked as to be put on the shelf for a month. I wrote to product support and emailed them two of the affected songs as requested, but have heard nothing since. It's happened too many times for me to count, and I'd just like to know why this is happening.

OMG! That looks just like Prince!!! Anyways, very glad to have found Pandora. Truely the most amazing music experience I have every had. Keep up the good work. I think it is safe to say that its perfect (just makes me really wish I could take it with me on the go).

Love Birdmonster! So sad that I missed that show at CMJ, their costumes were fabulous! Caught them a few other times, and each additional time Pete and company were awesome! Besides, they are a great, friendly group of guys. Hope you got to see plenty of other stuff at CMJ.

I think it is wonderful you are checking out the old stars especially of country music. Last week I found Adolph Hofner and there was a picture of his band in 1939 with my Uncle Buck playing the bass fiddle. He also was the one who did the arrangement of "Maria Elena" for Adolp. His widow & daughter were thrilled when I contacted them with the site.
