Thanks for Asking: New Features at Pandora

Over the course of the year since we launched Pandora, one of the most gratifying things for me personally has been the chance to correspond with many of you about the things that you love and hate about Pandora. We've been able to answer some of your feature requests with little tweaks here and there, but some of your great ideas meant we had to make some big changes. I'm incredibly excited to tell you that tonight we've launched a version of Pandora that tackles some of those tougher problems.

We've heard quite often that you want ways to get a wider variety of styles in one listening session. Some of you are looking for stations that are an eclectic mix of all of the kinds of music you love, not just one style. Tonight we're rolling out a brand new feature called "QuickMix" to answer that request head on. When you visit Pandora, you'll discover the QuickMix button at the bottom of your station list. Click the button, tell us which of your stations you want to mix together, and click "Listen Now". We'll automatically create a station that shuffles those stations together. You can also share your mix station with your friends.

You've also told us that we sometimes play a song that you like, but it's just not a good fit for the station it's on. Our new "Move this song" feature will let you take it off of the current station and move it to one of your other stations. This is one of our most-requested features and now it's an option under the song menu. When you hear something you want to move, just click the album art and select "Move this song to another station."

Finally, some of you have taken us up on the offer to create 100 distinct stations. One thing is clear: with that many stations it can be pretty hard to find the one you're looking for. Especially since we always sort them in the order you created them. Not anymore. Now you can choose to sort the stations alphabetically too. Just click the "Your Stations" line above the station list to choose your sort preference.

Thanks for inspiring us here every day at Pandora. We love your ideas and suggestions. Keep 'em coming!

Hey Tom,

The QuickMix solution is incredible. It really solves one of the puzzles for maintaining a balance of taught song based stations and an eclectic 'fill the room' playlist.

Is there a way to extend the Station Name column so that a station name can show more than 20 characters?

Posted by: Paul Costigan at October 13, 2006 12:49 AM

No, thank you!
Thanks to Pandora, I don't even listen to my CDs or MP3s anymore, for months already!
You're doing a fantastic job there, keep it going on!
Your fan,
Vitor

is there any difference between creating two artist stations and QuickMix-ing them and creating one station with the same two artists associated with it?

I'm currently using one station with 9 different artists (ranging from hiphop to metal) and it seems to be working OK

will I gain anything by splitting them up into thematic stations and then QuickMixing them?

Posted by: Luka Kladaric at October 13, 2006 02:59 AM

Strange.
Yesterday I thought that I would have to mail to ask for that function.

Apparently I am not the only one longing for that function. Is it also possible that you can split stations? That would be useful as well.

Great features :o) as always...

Looking forward to try the QuickMix possibilities, and might find the "Move this song..." feature handy along the way.

The long awaited feature to sort my stations is the real treat for me (thx), though it still has room for improvement I have to say. Because the only way to get my favourite stations and thereby make them the easiest to chose on top of the list regardless of name or date is to rename all of them in order to make them begin with 01, 02 etc, which is possible with my 14 stations but not with a larger number of stations, and then there is the future need once in a while to reorder them when I make new stations... That´s quite a task and furthermore not ideal since I can't rename the shared stations from friends.
Couldn´t there be sometime in the future an easy feature for numbering my stations as I wish and sort them by those numbers, perhaps something looking a little like the menu, where the QuickMix stations are selected?

Anyway great to have the possibility now even though it takes a little work, thx and keep up the amazing quality of improvements :o)

Posted by: Joan at October 13, 2006 04:06 AM

Awsome! I believe that you solved at least 95% of all requests in just one update!

Posted by: Stefan at October 13, 2006 04:19 AM

You don't need to be in your 70's to appreciate the music of their era. I'm in my 40's and love that music. Have you considered letting people choose alternately by type of music. For example....Crooners (New and Old)....Big Band...Good Old Rock and Roll...Classic Rock....etc.
Also how about some more Canadian content. There are many great bands which are not in your search list. Trooper, for example, from the west coast.

Posted by: Anne at October 13, 2006 05:32 AM

Actually to elaborate on the last comment about resizing the station names, I would like to see the whole interface become resizable. This would really make the whole application more versatile.

But overall, great work! The new features are awesome, but I have loved Pandora from the start!

Keep up the good work!

THANK YOU for the "move this song" option. I brought up pandora this morning, not knowing about the changes, and the second song I heard I wanted to move. I went to bookmark it, and there was the new option! Happiness =) So thanks for the new tool, and thanks for designing all of pandora so that even new options are intuitive to find & use.

Hi Tom,

I'm living the cubicle life at work, and when I put on the headphones, it's all Pandora all the time. Compared to Yahoo, Shoutcast, and the others, I've found Pandora to be the best at being able to create a vibe that fits my mood. I had no complaints before, but the new features are outstanding. The shuffle is perfect for me. And you all are doing a great job with this. Keep up the great work, and thanks!

Posted by: Curry at October 13, 2006 07:26 AM

I'm trying out the QuickMix feature now and so far it's not doing a great job finding what I like. I tend to think that although I like the qualities of each of the stations I've put into it, when one mixes them together there's some real dreck that gets put into the QuickMix. I think however that I need to do more listening before passing final judgement.

I'm still holding out for two features. First and foremost, I'd like quicker and better access to the information I have saved on Pandora. I have taken to listening to Pandora with an Excel spreadsheet open. I save the songs that I like to the list including a grade rating (C- through A+), album name, release date and further notes.

I would love to be able to get the artist, song, and album info in csv format or something similar. I went through the painful process of listing the "Songs I Liked" lists for my biggest stations and typing them into Excel. That was about 700 songs when I went through the process.

Secondly, I'd like a way to ban artists from all of my stations. Some of my stations have similar criteria but subtle differences, so the same artists that I can't stand on one station come up on my other stations as well. I'm tired of having to listen to these artists on my newer stations.

Other improvements I'd like to have include:

A broader rating system, thumbs up, thumbs down isn't enough.

More specific criteria for stations such as female only vocals, no vocals, piano dominant, etc...

Allow me to turn off a song for a week as well as a month

Allow me to play a station and select to hear only unrated songs. Some days I want to listen to completely new music and other times I want it mixed in with things I liked before

I'd like a better algorithm for playing songs I liked on stations. Some of my stations have lots of songs I liked from a particular artist, yet those songs are rarely ever played. I've also noticed that certain songs for certain artists play more often than other songs even though I've chosen all of them as songs I've liked.

I still love the service overall. I find that you often play music that I can't get on other services. I also like the way that stations I make from new artists often bring up artists I've liked for a long time showing that finding music I like really works.

I have noticed however that as I play my stations more I find less and less good new music and get more dreck coming up to give thumbs down to. It seems like my stations are becoming less enjoyable because you're having to reduce the criteria for picking new music so that it's getting further and further from what I like.

I'd also love to have a paid Pandora service which would allow me to stream songs at will and build my own mixes. Although Pandora offers a great way to listen to new music, I find I have to stop listening to Pandora to hear what I really want to hear sometimes.

Thank you for listening and I look forward to discovering a lot more songs and artists to love.

Tony

Congratz! you've done it again.

The Solution to sorting the stations is simple, yet effective, and the move this song function is plain "Genious"

Keep up the great work

Posted by: TheSpamHere at October 13, 2006 07:30 AM

Wow Tom,

These three features will all combine to make my Pandora experience the best ever. Honestly I don't know how it will get any better than this. I've been trying to customize Pandora every day at work for the past two months, and now I think I'll finally be able to tweak it just to my liking. (Don't tell my boss, but sometimes it seems like I spend more time on Pandora than on my work!) I don't think I can thank you enough -- Pandora has definitely enlightened my music listening experience.

Posted by: Patrick Bailey at October 13, 2006 08:03 AM

I agree with Curry that the ratings need to be a little broader, I'm liking the new features though :)

Posted by: Olly at October 13, 2006 09:07 AM

Now let's make life hard...come up with a way to categorize by genre, say, Classical Guitar or Honky Tonk Piano--you get the idea. Or, possibly by composer. I know that I'm asking a lot, but I'm an old guy and I'm simply very demanding!

Posted by: FEO at October 13, 2006 09:28 AM

Quickmix was a great move! Now I'm less likely to mix two only-slightly-similar genres in one station to try to hear both. I imagine that would confuse even the most brilliant algorithm. Now I can have my Dragonforce and my CCR at the same time!

In the words of Guiness commercials:
BRILLIANT! *clink*

Posted by: Roy at October 13, 2006 09:32 AM

Boooooooo!!!! Boo I say! Am I the only one that thinks that the move song option is an utter waste of time and ingenuity? Seriously people. If a song is playing on a station that it shouldn't, why are you wanting to move it? The problem is that the algorithm choosing songs for that station screwed up. I say fix THAT problem. Don't offer me some band-aid solution to lessen the annoyance of a problem at the core of what Pandora is trying to do. Booooooo!

I'm still waiting on a way to cross reference stations to narrow their focus. I'm already getting FAR too much variation in what I want. A way to generate MORE variation in what is being played is the last thing I need. Boooooo!

Posted by: ObiWanKeenobi at October 13, 2006 10:11 AM

The second I read about the "Move this song to a different station" feature, my love for Pandora grew! Unfortunately (altho not really unfortunately) I have been listening to Pandora for such a long time now that many of the songs that I would have moved to a different station have already been blocked from whatever station it played on. I'm sure I will still find ways to use the feature tho.

Thank you for everything Pandora is. It really helps me get through the work day! (or waste it away)

Posted by: Daniel at October 13, 2006 10:22 AM

I was trying to mix stations manualy yesterday.

I turned on Pandora this morning and immediately saw the new buttons. I was thrilled, this is just amazing. I might stay on QuickMix for most of the time, turning on and off the component stations as my mood varys. So would it be possible to "Move this song" when QuickMix is activated? Should be simple to implement.

Anyway, thanks for being the best source of music on the net.

Posted by: droid at October 13, 2006 10:38 AM

Any other FoxyTunes users notice that artist/song info is no longer populating? Other than that, love the new features. I also agree with Anne about resizing the UI.

Posted by: Doug at October 13, 2006 10:44 AM

Thanks for adding QuickMix! I just emailed you asking for it last week. You did it just for me, didn't you?

Posted by: Eric at October 13, 2006 11:32 AM

Wonderful --- just tried the quick mix and it works wonderfully (I suggested this back on 11/09/05).
You all have been doing a fantastic job of making Pandora a great product.
THANKS!

I don't know if this is the best place to post this; however, I'd love to see a Pandora skinning initiative. Give artists/designers the information for building custom skins, and allow users the ability to choose from them in the Pandora menu system. Have it of course save the current skin so that a user won't have to change his skin everytime he logs in.

Nice features. Thanks for improving Pandora.

Time to think up new features and send them in :)

Posted by: Pimm at October 13, 2006 01:12 PM

In response to the big post by Curry//Tony - If you added all of the songs you liked to your bookmarks, all you would need to do is go to the printable version of the list, right click, and click "Export to Microsoft Excel"

Could have saved you all of that painstaking time you had to spend going through your "Songs you liked" lists

Posted by: Daniel at October 13, 2006 01:51 PM

Like the improvements. Next suggestion: Unshackle the music. I've done some experimenting and it appears that the only songs that will be played from an album are the ones listed in the "try track .." list on the backstage pass for that album. Why aren't all the songs available? I understand that you can't have every song, ever made available. I understand you have to make some value judgements about what to include.

I suggest instead of making that value judgement on a song by song basis, do it on an album by album basis. What I love about Pandora is that it suggests songs on empirical musical similarities. If I wanted people to decide what songs are good for me, I could listen to the radio. I want to decide if a song is good or not myself.

Thank you.

Posted by: Adam at October 13, 2006 02:03 PM

Here comes another fantastic idea: Allow users to get rid of the QuickMix button if they don't need it. I like listening to punk rock and country music, but never at the same time :-) My suggestion is to add a new button to the "Your Stations" menu: "Hide/Show QuickMix". Thanks :-)

I've run out of superlatives for you all. Soon, you'll have to go back and read some of my old posts to previous blog entries and recycle a compliment. But for now: Pandora is the best invention since the pulley.

One teeny weeny request: A "Go To" function in the Favourites/Profile section. Clicking through 16 pages (hang on) make that 17 pages one at a time is a little tedious.

I just discovered Pandora recently and just last night I was wishing there were a way to deal with songs I liked but didn't want to hear on a particular station.

So really, it's one thing when you do such a good job analyzing my musical preferences, but stop with the mind reading already.

:) Seriously, I love this service and chattered all evening to my girlfriend about it and have pimped it to another friend. I plan on mentioning it to my mother as well.

Curry's idea of playing only unrated songs, but I like Olly's idea of allowing us to create a station based on a specific genre!
The Quick Mix is terrific!

Hey, I like the Move Song and the QuickMix, but I'd like them even more if I could use the two together. The QuickMix is great for throwing together new stuff (let's see what Folk station + Power Metal station + Nature/Trance will get me, eh?), but it seems like it would be best if I could then use what that gives me to "broaden" the former stations with only a click or two.

And I second the desire for even more available organizing functions.

Hello everyone,
thank you very very much about Pandora, it really helps us to discover more music. I think it would be nice to have (besides the "Backstage" fuction) the ability to see the complete list of songs that were played in one station while the station was active. This feature would allow us to review the songs we've heard, to see our comments (i.e. I liked it or not) and to spot interesting albums. With this feature would be much easier to locate albums that we want to buy.

Thank you,
Dimitris

Posted by: Caroline at October 14, 2006 05:30 AM

The Quickmix feature is a nice addition. Any chance users could create more than one quickmix, and give them different names (if this is possible, it's not clear)? This way, we could check and uncheck different combinations of existing stations.

Thanks.

Posted by: Jonathan Sibley at October 14, 2006 10:33 AM

Agree with Curry about some sort of "I don't like this artist - never play them again - in fact, send them hatemail" feature. There are some bands that might be categorised similarly to ones I like, but who I would rather eat my own foot than listen to.

I've lost count of the people I've recommended Pandora to. Thanks.

one suggestion for those of us who like to sing along, could it be possible to include the lyrics of the songs (or a linkg to) in the song page? (as part of one of the categories: information of album, similar songs, buy it from, etc)
that would be great!
thanks

I would love to know the kind of Music I am listening.
Wouldn't it be great if every station could tell what musical properties are exclusive to it, just the way you let us know why you selected a song for us.

Posted by: Jeet at October 14, 2006 04:51 PM

This website is extremely creepy - well done indeed. Is the Internet getting intelligent - is it downloading my brain? Thought I'd beat it straight away asking for an obscure UK 70s band called Patto - oh no Pandora knew about them!
I've now learned about new artists - marvellous.

When you've fed artists and songs into the machine - what about some different controls e.g. more uptempo - softer, more pop, less metal or whatever. And even for musicians "more minors!" (It seems to think I just like a major key). I'd like to hear a few 13th flattened fifths.

Oh its not heard of Mylene Farmer - she was very big in Canada and France (mylene.net) and there's loads of remixes of her work?

All the same great stuff.

Posted by: marco at October 15, 2006 12:31 AM

I love all the new additions to Pandora! I decided to check it out when Tycho linked it on penny-arcade a while back, and I'll never look anywhere else!

Theres only a few things I'd like to see coming:

A way to add and subtract genres to stations. I added an artist that does two entirely different styles of music, and I only like one of them. So, while I like half of his work, the other half I don't at all, I'd like to see a way where I can keep the half I like, and never hear the half I don't again.

I'd also really appreciate it if there was a way to use the "move to a different station" feature so that I heard the rest of the song. I'm trying to get some stations just by genre, and sometimes I really like the song that comes up, but I really don't think it fits. I'd like to hear the rest before it gives it the thumbs down :P

Thanks a bunch! Keep up the great work!

After my itunes library crashed, and I lost thousands upon thousands of songs I loved, I was forced to find a new way to listen to Music. After searching the internet for a very long time, I finally came across this. Not only helping to satisfy my need for tunes, it showed me new music.

However I can't help but wish I still had acsess to my old music. As mentioned above, I wish the music wasn't limited to the "try this" songs on the albums. I know you have to draw the line somewhere, but I ask that you put an entire album on or none at all. My favorite song on Blazing Arrow by Blackalicious (the sky is falling) I can't listen to even though I can hear the preview. It's frustrating. Please add the rest of the albums to your database.

Everything you do just gets better and better. I only have one request, is there a way we can see your list of hundreds of attributes that go with a song? well I have to say this is by far the most interesting music site out there. The bookmark option is great for constant listening and then going back and making a purchase of a new artist's music. Though there is alot of "new" music here that I've recently found there are some artists that have had radio air play (at least in the Detroit area) that I've tried to get into my channels they don't exist in the database here. What efforts are made in regards to matters such as this?

the quickmix is nice, but when you click on 'why are you playing this song' it should probably include the station that the song is from in the text, just to clarify a bit better than a bit of subtle orange highlighting in the station list :)
good work though. and for the sorting option. Resizing the player might be nice too...

Great job, as usual. I would note in the FAQ's that you cannot move songs when listening to your QuickMix. I'd like to be able to do so.

The new build encourages you to build more tightly focused stations, and let QuickMix switch between them. I like guessing which station the song that's playing is coming from which encourages clicking to the page even more frequently than the urge to give feedback does which should be good news for your sponsors.

Speaking of which, I've been collecting the sponsored stations, and I really like that marketing program. Do, however, encourage them to put more than one artist or song on the station is was the case with Alternative Smirnoff Black Cherry Radio.

Lastly, as always readers of this blog are encourage to join the fans to talk over at http://pandora-forums.com and to share your stations over at http://pandorastations.crispynews.com/.

As many of the other commenters have already pointed out, the new features on the Pandora player are awesome. I get tired of music players with too many cumbersome buttons and swtiches; the listener ends up spending more of his time trying to work the player than actually using it. The new features make it so much easier to organize and enjoy multiple playlists. Thanks guys.

I can not thank you enough for pandora, but I was curious if Beats per minute is a factor in decieding if two songs are similar. Sometimes when you search for similar songs, and the song you list has a fast beat, the next song th engine chooses has half of the speed. For me, beat is important, because if a song plays at half speed, the song is radically different. Even though pandora is beautiful as is, factoring in beats per minute would make good better. :D thank you again.

I am amazed and thrill to finally find a Internet radio station which appeal to my taste. So far, I have created 6 stations and in the process of developing more. The quick mix is a wonderful addition and "move this song" is the answer to my prayer for type of catagory songs I feel belong in the different format of station.

So far I have e-mail and "deliver the word" out to my friends to listen to this station. Keep up the wonderful work and you will hear from me soon. I have a list of songs and artists to submit for your consideration and perhaps add to your growing list.
Thank u again

Hi,

Just a thought for a feature that might help in identifying some new records to buy:

Throughout using Pandora, there will be hundreds of Thumbs-Up and Thumbs-Down decisions made. Would it be possible that when, say, 3 songs off an album have received a Thumbs-Up then the album and/or artist could appear on your Bookmarked Artists section - perhaps even with a link to Amazon..?

I would personally find it incredibly useful since I listen to Pandora during the day at work and don't always remember which songs I liked and which I didn't (other than through rating them) so having some kind of aggregation like this on my homescreen would save my having to trawl through the hundreds of records I liked in the player.

Awesome work though, guys.

Sill looking for a Graphic Equalizer. Almost every music player I ever used online has at least a three band equalizer. Even the free WinAmp player has a beautiful ten band Graphic Equalizer, which makes even low speed streams sound really good. Now it's time for Pandora to do the same.

I only wish I could listen to Pandora in my car.

The quick mix feature is great. But Pandora has been soooo SLOW since that feature went in! Is there a connection? thanks, Heather

Posted by: Heather at October 17, 2006 02:40 PM

slow? hmm.. in what way? i haven't noticed any change at all.

Hey, I just wanted to say that I really like Pandora and thank you for taking the time to make something so wonderful! I've already found some amazing bands because of you guys.

This is definately one of my favorite websites.

Thanks again!

Hello Pandora Staff& Affiliates, I"m the new blood on the block!!!My biggest anoyance w/some of Pandora's feature is this particular one;It is that; while I"m programing the music of my choice; I"m finding that constantly when my imput button ceases to operate; I"m always stuck w/ a seletion that without fail; I do not like!! That feeling stuck IS NOT COOL!!!! It is; what it is JUST PLAIN ANNOYING! Could ya fix that PlEEEse?THANKS.

PPS:Please broaden the horizon on European,Brazilian,World music etc. There are some Tight tracks out there unknown to most but not to me.The real fresh tracks are just waiting for the right one to discover.Pandora I hope it's you!!!!

Posted by: Evelyn Harre at October 18, 2006 09:13 PM

thumbs up. I like quick mix a lot.

it would be cool if there was a way to get lyrics for the songs as well - for example only a link to Google search with "lyrics" and "" opening in a new window? imho, this would nicely avoid any legal issues.

other thing I'm missing is "ban this artist" - I can't help it but there are some who pop up every now and then, despite of thumbs down..

Posted by: mojbordel at October 19, 2006 01:26 AM

I thought Pandora already was amazing before, but with all these new features it's even more than that.

Thank you so much for this service!

Posted by: Frankie at October 19, 2006 02:07 AM

Great new features :)

Do you what would be cool? If I could use Pandora via the web on my mobile phone...

Posted by: Daniel at October 19, 2006 02:23 AM

When you say country music is music of all ages you hit the nail on the head. This comment caught my eye because the other day I went past my 16 year old daughters room, there she was with four other friends danceing and singing to country on Pandora they all say that Pandora is the gratest. So if you got there attention you must be doing something right.. LOL Keep up the good work

Blessed BE

Two requests.

First: please consider expanding your horizons beyond pop music. I'd love to have an early music channel, or world music.

Second: is there any way I can set up to pipe my pandora.com station into where I am in Second Life? That would be a wondeful thing.

Please keep up the good work, and thank you especially for not jumping immediately to Flash 9, so that we Linux users can take advantage of your most excellent service.

Well, first of all i want to say that your website is one of the most exicintig on the internet. Thanks to pandora.com i discover a lot of new alternative groups.
I'm from Spain and I'm glad to listed spanish groups on the site but, (always if you can), i like to listen more Spanish groups, i think that Spanish and English are the two more common languages in music world. And actually, the US are quite influented by Spaniard music like (hated) reggaeton...
Well, that's all i want to say thanks for all and continue with this page, it's really wonderful

Posted by: Jose Ignacio Martinez at October 19, 2006 01:24 PM

the "on tour" feature is brilliant as well. it's just one of the many reasons that pandora will become the best thing to happen to the future of music. pandora will be the genuine, uncommercialized benchmark for interacting with music, musicians, and other music fans.

one suggestion: add yabby you's music to your database. he's one of the essential godfathers of reggae and dub.

Posted by: chris timmins at October 19, 2006 01:49 PM

Awesome new features, brilliant. I have gone so far as to setup a surplus laptop in the living room totally dedicated to Pandora. Bought the best set of Altec Lansing 2.1's I could buy, popped in a Audigy card for the notebook and have been loving it ever since.

What I would love to see is a bigger interface, so I can control it from across the room with my remote.

Also, would love to see a version for MS MCE, that would be an awesome addition.

And like others I too would actually pay to have Pandora in my car or on my cell phone if you did an interface for my Sony Ericsson.

Stream it everywhere.

Thanks Pandora for making music enjoyable again.

Pandora is so great! I love the new additions to the greatness!

I was wondering, is it possible to make the QuickMix station renameable? I like having the QuickMix--I like it a lot--but I don't necessarily like the fact that the name of the station automatically displays my username when I share my stations on the web.

Thanks for all the awesome work!

Posted by: !Xabbu at October 20, 2006 08:05 AM

Thank you so much for both of these features. It's highly appreciated!!

Posted by: Nysidra at October 20, 2006 09:45 AM

It's a great project! Keep it up!

This may not be a new suggestion, but you can add a graphic equalizer to the interface.

A nice feature would be to be able to search for people with similar musical tastes.

Adding more rating options is also a good idea, as well as having different songs to play in the morning/day/evening. There could be some kind of 'mood' option which would make the station play the right songs depending on the listener's mood (the right songs for every mood are also defined by the listener). With more ratings there could be a chart of the top rated songs/artists - and an option to play only the station's favorites for some time.

I just found Pandora and I really enjoy all the amazing features. I realize what a great benefit it is to allow a song to be moved to another station, but I'm having difficulty with genres showing up in a station that are thoroughly inappropriate. For example, if I have a Christian station with only Christian artists selected, I wouldn't want secular music played. Likewise with Country music. For future enhancements, could you consider "Restrict Genre" as a selectable option?

Posted by: gina at October 22, 2006 01:51 PM

A few ideas:
When "adding to station" you should be able to add just a particular album from an artist. For example everyone knows that the Taking Back Sunday CD Tell All Your Friends is by far their best cd, so I dont want my station to include any of their other songs.
Also, you guys make sort of a "profile" of the station by saying something like "subtle use of acoustic piano" "punk roots" etc. A user should be able to add those little things (i dont know what to call them) to their station. For example I really want a station that only plays acoustic songs from all of my favorite bands.

Posted by: Alli at October 22, 2006 02:50 PM

The Quick Mix is a great addition. I just saw it, and like many here I've been wanting something like that for a long time.

I think my only real remaining wish is an ability to widen or narrow the flexibility of a station depending on my mood. That is, presumably you consider each song a point in some 200-dimensional space of qualities, and a station based on that song plays songs within a certain distance of the chosen song; I'd like to be able to increase or decrease that distance. Sometimes I really want stuff exactly like X, and other times I'm feeling a bit more exploratory. This would also help with Pandora's number one failing, which is a tendency to repeat quite a lot after a few hours.

But I love the Quick Mix--thanks from a fan who has been using Pandora for over a year now.

Posted by: James at October 22, 2006 04:02 PM

Would it be possible to have the QuickMix button able to play only 1 station, instead of requiring at least 2 to be selected.
Obviously this wouldn't exactly be a "mix" but have been hoping for some easier way to find my favourite station out the hundreds I have listed. It must be a relatively simple change to allow quickmix to require only 1 station to be added.

Just an idea!
thanks for the great program

Posted by: david at October 22, 2006 04:50 PM

Last (and first) time I posted in your site I was saying that Pandora is just perfect, that I would only add one or two details (for ex: "move this song to another station"). Now I see with great delight that those features already exist!

You guys are really making a great work, listening to users' requests while keeping the things simple.

I really see the future of the radio here (since I discovered Pandora, it became almost my only source of music...) I hope you manage to keep this concept nice, simple and neat 'till the end; and that you get the credit and profit you deserve, even going through the giants on this business ;)

Posted by: Jorge Alfonso at October 22, 2006 08:03 PM

I can understand the difficulty of adding classical music to pandora (not a matter of music structure but feeling of interpretation) If you make it you will actually bring all pandora to a total different level. what we all expect of course.

But what about world music?

Something I would love from The Music Genome Project, apart from listening to it on Pandora, is to actually see it. Please! show us the tree, take us to the forest!

Pandora is better than sliced bread....you guys rock!!! Ha Ha some pun intended.

The new features are great - especially the sorting.

Posted by: Shongelolo at October 24, 2006 07:09 PM

I love pandora! But, there is one large glaring thing that seems to be missing. Why can't I play my favorites? Shouldn;t there be a favorites station or play all favorites? It seems really odd to be missing that.

Posted by: krissy at October 25, 2006 12:52 PM

I really want an equalizer. I added pandora to winamp hoping I could use the winamp equalizer. Do you guys know of anything that would work as a general windows equilizer so that I could get better sound out of pandora. I realize flash hardly can attempt to equalize music and that if you were to add an equalizer you would have to be doing the transformations on the server which could be very intensive. So maybe a add displaying desktop player with an equalizer would be the way to go. I love the adds. Happy to pay you guys by checking out your advertisers.

Thanks,

Hey!

I love this website, it's so cool what you guys have done! I have one suggestion/question: is there any way you can make it so I can go back and listen to a song again? That would be awesome! Thanks!

Posted by: Emily at October 26, 2006 01:25 PM

I am new to Pandora and I must say that I am really impressed. I do have a suggestion, though. There needs to be a way to ask for music by genre. I love to listen to classical and instrumentals. I love movie soundtracks - instrumental and with words. However, when I put in John Williams, the composer for "Star Wars," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," etc., Pandora could not find him. I put in Mozart and Wolfgang A. Mozart was not to be found. I do like some contemporary - like smooth jazz - but I do not know the names of all of those artists nor do I know the names of all of those tunes. Do you see my delima? Being able to sort by genre would be a wonderful enhancement and I am sure there are others who would appreciate the ability too. Keep up the good work. I am singing praises about your site to all of my friends.

Posted by: Litwit at October 31, 2006 01:46 PM

Is one of the new "features" to HAVE to register to listen; I would not have signed up for this thing if I didn't get to listen first. Why would you make something worse?

Posted by: Jill at October 31, 2006 04:41 PM

Awesome new additions. I would though like to have some ability to have a pandora made and mixed CD. Sometimes I get music in such an order that just flows really well (minus a few songs I'd like to get removed or just tweaked around a little.). The only problem I see with this is that I would want to pay for songs I already own. I don't know, there were a few times when I'd be all over a mix and Im sure that time'll come again.

Posted by: Mark at November 1, 2006 10:12 AM

I also vote for being able to search for music by genre. This would be most helpful when one doesn't know the artist or song. Also, I'm finding that Pandora keeps playing the same songs over and over rather than finding new songs. I also have found that the more popular songs by a particular artist are not played. Why is that?

I'd like to see a way to set parameters like 'I don't like live music' or...OK, that's the only one.

Posted by: Marlene at November 6, 2006 05:32 PM

Being able to select instrumental vs. vocal would be Very helpful

Posted by: Sue at November 6, 2006 06:34 PM

I would also like to be able to search by genre and would love some classical music. I'm really enjoying Pandora! Thank you!

I just wanna say thank you, i am so greatly that i found this site. music is my life, and finding this site has increased the amount of my music knowledge and the selections are amazing i've found so many that i think i would have never encounter if it werent for you guys.you guys are awesome, this is such a genius idea, mindblowing really ..never stop!!

Posted by: Stacey Cooper at November 7, 2006 03:36 PM

You need to add an artist! Check out alihandal.com

I'm loving this, by the way, and telling all my colleagues about it!

Posted by: stephanie at November 8, 2006 06:05 AM

Firstly, love the quickmix feature - though sometimes I think it incorrectly identifies the station that a song came from.

For example I have an upbeat dancy station and an acoustic style station. The quickmix played an acoustic song, but had an orange box around the dancy station and when I clicked on 'like it' the song was added to the dancy station! Is this a bug in the feature ?

Other than this excellent work!

Posted by: Nik at November 23, 2006 07:23 AM

Nik is right, I noticed the same bug. Please try to fix that, station feedback doesn't work if a station is not correctly identified.

Please please make PANDORA.COM for Windows Moble Phones!!!

I got part one done. I installed Flash 2.1 lite for windows mobile 5. And i get an error message.

"Flash 2.1 lite for windows mobile 5 Will support flash 7 content authored for mobile devices only".

This has got to be an easy fix. I would even pay fir this service. Thanks For all you time.

Oh done forget to get pandora.com on cell phones!!!!

Thank you so much for giving us Pandora. I have discovered so many artists that I would have NEVER have known of before. I am always asking who is like this group, or where can I find more of this when I go to buy an album - in holes that they will have a direction to point me in. They never do and I keep listening to the same crap. Now, I keep a post it next to me at work where I write my new discovered artists. THANK YOU!!

This is one of the coolest things I have come across lately. Mass Kudos to Pandora.

Please make this available for the car. PLEASE!

Posted by: Amy at June 29, 2007 07:10 PM

I love Pandora, I have found so many new artists that I never would have known about without Pandora. However, I would like to inquire when and if Pandora will become available to listen to in the car. I am tired of restlessly searching for music and never finding anything on other than the top 20 hits.

Posted by: Raine at December 10, 2007 07:25 PM

I found this via a google search for pandora in the car. (It was indented under the #1 google result, which was about pandora in the home.)

Just wanted to give the idea of pandora on the go (via iPhone maybe?) another bump.

Why is it taking so long for this next logical step to take place?

Cheers,
Chris Heath
