A Name Game

Hello once again from the busy world of Pandora's music collection!

It's been an amazing few months since I last posted, and the first thing I want to do is to thank everyone who has sent in either music or music requests to us. Your suggestions help us immensely, so thank you! Please, keep the ideas coming.

Starting next week, I will be resuming my weekly blogs about some of the most interesting records in our collection, and I would love to hear peoples' ideas for a name for these blogs.

As a few of you (hopefully!) might remember, the previous blogs went by the name "No Mainstream Fridays," which let's face it is pretty dang unsexy when you come right down to it.

It's time to switch to a name that's more lyrical and inspiring than that; a name that can hang with the incredible music the blog will be highlighting.... And that's where you come in....

Since our collection benefits so much from your suggestions, it stands to reason that you folks will have great ideas for a name for this series, too, right?

Here are a few possible titles to get things started:

gemology
the miner's headlamp
ghosts in the machine
silver surfer
proto-leaf

leaves of grease
the undergrounder
the listening eye
innocence mission
white papers
succulents
dinghy
catcher in the rye
roads girdle the globe
the complicator
tom waits for no man
music for air, land and sea

suggest away...!

ps - and here's a little treat for this weekend: They Cannot Let it Expand by Midlake.

Comments

My advice is to refrain from being so clever that newcomers can't tell by name what the blog is about and therefore don't bother to stop by.

I'm all for something that is to the point. "the undergrounder" suits me. Or, how about ...?
* pandora's most peculiars
* pandora's box of bibelots
* featured freaky fare fridays (if you blog on friday)
* mz's music marvels and mutants (OK, so, obviously, I'm an alliteration nut.)
* off the beaten path
* pandora's curiosity shop

P.S. FWIW, since there can be no gradations of uniqueness, something can't be "most unique", only "most unusual".

Hi, I just wanted to let you know how mush I enjoy Pandora. For me personally I'm a Jazz lover and untill about a year and a half ago there was a smooth jazz FM radio station in the area where I live. I found lot's of music that I herd and then went out Purchase . But the station went off the air. Pandora has replaced it with jazz plus so mush more of the great songs and music I've never heard before. What a great site, Thanks

I love this site. After losing most of my stuff - including music back to the sixties, yes, vinyl - I moved to California with my son. Genius man he is, I now have a new computer, woofer, great speakers and he told me about Pandora. I am disabled after a tortous bout of cancer so I could never replace all my music. Pandora has done that for me and I am so grateful. As to her name? Please don't let go of Pandora. Even something from my generation - Pandora's Magical, Musical Starship, big grin! I can see it now ... an old VW van -purple flowers, peace signs, lots of speakers, and the magnificent Pandora carved as a masthead for the bus. Now there's an image not easily forgotten, smile.
Honestly, everyone - this grandma who has quite a bit of writing on different websites - thanks you for the wonderful things you are doing.

"what's in the box?"

Posted by: dom at October 21, 2006 05:27 PM

Hi,
What about

- Pandora, what's in the box?
or
- Pandora, please open it!

Keep the great work. One suggestion, once in a while you hear a song that according to the mood you had when you listened was ok, but when you hear it again you say, it is ok but not a full thumbs up. I would like to have an option to say something like "Yeah, I like it but not enough!" .

I live in Mexico City and in the 80's I listened to a radio station that before end of song would introduce a voice in off making brief cutting edge or killing comments on song's music, lirycs, content, performer or album. Could you add comments from the community or Pandora team(both are good reference) that can help us understand many whys of the song:
Why written?
Why released today and not before?
Why included in this album?
Why the album?

All this as a brief side note. This would be a great add-up to your excellent work.

Regards,

Posted by: Alex at October 21, 2006 06:24 PM

Since we're talking about blogs, here's an idea: Would it be possible for pandora users to have their own individual blogs on the site to talk about their favorite music and their own local music scenes?

Just a thought. (Even if you can't, the site is still great!)

Posted by: Phillip at October 21, 2006 08:27 PM

I'm partial to playing off of "Pandora," either those referenced above, or from a further wikipedia plunge, "Pyrrha" (the daughter of Pandora and Prometheus).

Random other thoughts:
* Talus (not the band, rather the rocky debris piled up at the bottom of mountain or cliff)

Or for song title references:
* Minstrel Boy (Dylan: "Who's gonna throw that minstrel boy a coin?:
* There Ain't Nothing Like a Song (Elvis)
* Ain't That a Groove? (James Brown)

I second all the lavish praise from above and can't believe i haven't had more people tell me about the site (instead of the other way around).

Posted by: joe at October 22, 2006 01:19 AM

New here, thanks to my friend Dave. This is a magnificent thing! For a name, I like (lacking my own originality) "miner's headlamp." But for the theme it might be "Out of the Box," perhaps "Pandora's Candelora!"

Posted by: Merrill Wallenstein at October 22, 2006 09:57 AM

Another suggestion/question, not necessarily related to the topic. What about comedy tracks? I wanted to add comedians to a play list such as Lewis Black, Mitch Hedberg, or Dane Cook. From your viewpoint, I understand it would be hard to compare one comedian to another (like classical music) and maybe it doesn't even qualify for Pandora (or the music genome project) as it's not music. But it'd be a nice avenue to add.

Posted by: Bryan at October 22, 2006 10:27 AM

Hey all -

Thank you for these great suggestions. Very interesting... To address a few of the specific questions/comments:

1. I stand corrected for using the phrase "most unique." For all you youngsters out there, do not try using the phrase "most unique" at home! It's incorrect!

2. For those of you who asked for user blogs and wiki-style track and artist information, that's a great suggestion. I can't speak for our engineering team, but I do know that people here are looking for ways to incorporate those kinds of features, so please stay tuned.

3. As for stand-up comedy, that's a bit of a long term prospect, as we'd need a whole new genome for spoken word stuff. You never know...!

best,
mz

How about Strawberry Fieldtrips?

Posted by: Denis at October 22, 2006 11:20 AM

How about, "The Freedom of Radio". This is from a classic Rush tune - listen to the lyrics - it's perfect!

Thanks!

Posted by: AEngelsrud at October 22, 2006 02:16 PM

Hi. I've only just recently joined, and I'd like to add my own voice to the collective approving murmur I'm seeing. I have a pretty eclectic list of favourite bands, which made it pretty well impossible for me to find a radio station to draw from all my tastes. The idea of customizable radio is a masterstroke of genius, and I hope it makes you all filthy rich. You deserve it!

Anyway, for suggestions, "Pandora's Box" is painfully unoriginal I know, but it gets to the point and fits the theme. Alternatively, "Pandora's Aquarium" has a nice sound (also acting as a less-than-subtle nod to the great Tori Amos (who's just come on Pandora as I'm editing this!))

Can't think of anything else right now. Keep up the good work!

-Justin

Posted by: Justin Joschko at October 22, 2006 02:36 PM

I think the absolute best title is the one suggested above: "The Opened Box".... because that's uniquely evocative of what you've done and continue to do.

And I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you that your service is one which quite literally brings tears every time I listen.

Thank you.

How about:

Pandora Sounds Great!

and the word sounds can be a noun or a verb...tho if it is seen as a verb, great should really be "greatly" which of course is not correct...but it is food for thought.

Posted by: Lynn at October 22, 2006 03:26 PM

I always thought Dreams of reason would make a great name for a band(after mick kanr's album, but I guess that means nothing here... How about something like Dora's Fry -up....Groan, I know..
Great product by the way. Only problem is I'm discovering so many great new artists and buying so many cd's that I'm broke...Cheers again. Pitt

away from cliche.. i like ghost in the machine of the first ideas because that deus ex machina (spelling?) you get from having an imaginary personal dj is cool, sort of like oz. names on that idea... yellow brick road, behind the curtain, the wizard (thats you). i also liked the pandora-related ideas. ghost in the box?...

Posted by: chuy at October 22, 2006 10:50 PM

Chasity -
I don't think you're meant to mention that you're not US :-) .
The punk collection is good, but there is a shortage of smaller bands - I hope that eventually they will get included. How about doing a Pandora for new bands to publicise themselves. Without this need for barcode etc (I know it's a copyright problem and you're trying to keep legal and not rip off the artists etc. - it's a good way of documenting the plays) but maybe a Pandoracode could be worked out so a band could send a CD - even a voting system for them - and get plays interspersed with the main playlist.

BTW, how about Panblog for the blog - no need for fancy names and pan.. means everything.

Hi,
I'm from the Cayman Islands and I think Pandora is great.
Just wondering, is there a way to simply play music from one artist. I have created different "radios" for different artists, but of course, a variety of artists play on those radios. I would like each radio to be purely for one artist. Is that possible?
As to names: How about:
Pandora's Box
Pandora's Awesome Discovery
Pandora's Temptation
Unleashed
Keep up the good work. Its truly Awesome.

Pandora's secrets?

Posted by: Sneaky Pete at October 23, 2006 09:32 AM

Love, Love, Love this site. It would be nice to be notified when requested music finally makes it into Pandora. You guys are probably too busy to send notification e-mails, so I guess I'll just keep checking. And it would be nice to have a users forum.

I agree that the blog name should not be too obscure, but it should be unique. Don't use box, since pandora really opened a jar or 'pithos' and box has some crude female conotations! Maybe that's a good thing? At least use Pandoras Music Box , not just Pandoras box!

Since Pandora was a beautiful woman who was supposedly evil inside or led to mans downfall, how about these song titles:

Black Magic Woman
Witchy Woman
She Ain't Pretty
Evil Woman
Lady Evil
Bad Girl

And Blue October has a song "Conversation by Radio". I have never heard it. Is it any good?

Thanks,Lo

Must be halloween soon.....

Here's a name suggestion:

"Inside the box"

It's subtle but it simultaneously touches on two other phrases.
- Pandora's box
- Thinking outside the box

Someone else had a similar suggestion of outside the box. That would also work. Inside the box, gives insight into what's going on inside.

Posted by: Greg at October 23, 2006 12:04 PM

I found Pandora through "stumble". I really appreciate your service and could've saved $$ had i found it earlier. lol Heres a suggestion for name:
The ELUSIVE BOX.

Posted by: sokessensei at October 23, 2006 01:02 PM

How's about:
'Pandomanium' - or you could even spell it correctly, but it would be less fun.
I liked 'The/Pandoras Quicksilver Messenger Service'... but it would seem that the band of the same name still lives.

(Most) excellent idea though, but a pity you don't have any GROBSCHNITT in your collection.

Regards

Phil

PS. Bill & Ted said 'most unusual' type things all the time - and they were on TV, so it must be OK ;)

Posted by: Phil at October 23, 2006 02:07 PM

How about some global connotation ? I'm still hoping the world music collection will expand, though I created successfully a station that features early electronic music, which is german music for a large part.

Here's some suggestions:
Pandora Earth, or Global Village Music

Or, on another track:

Pandora unboxed or Pandora unleashed

"outta the box" or "onto the soapbox"

I am a 59 year old grandma and I am liking what I hear. I am not one to surf the net , but I was looking for some music to listen to while I oppened and answered my emails and did some business on my computer.(my daughter does it all the time) she set me up with "Lime Wire" but man I just can't get the hang of it.

Yours is so simple to navigate and I am listening instead of downloading , and getting songs I would never otherwise even thought of.

I am still negotiating the waters but really appreciate what you are doing. If you sell shares in this I would want in.

I wonder if you really realize the full potential of what you are doing?

Keep going , I really like it and will tell all my friends (and my daughter)!

Goofy sugar-fueled suggestions:
~The Cire Perdu Method. Or just Cire Perdu. Forgive this incredibly complex and stupid pun. For those of you have lives: Cire Perdu = Lost Wax (a method of casting bronze) Wax = What music was recorded on a long time ago and until the CD overtook vinyl, slang for a record.
Hey, I said it was stupid.
~Ein Kline Music Genome.
~Mini-Me's G-Gnome Project.
~Tunes from the lab.

To alter Aaron's suggestion just a bit: Freedom _from_ radio to make a pun on the Rush track.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but I live just outside of Washington, DC and my tuner was gathering dust before I discovered Pandora, so that's what Pandora means to me.

Otherwise, I vote for Freedom of Radio or Pandomanium [Pandemonium].

OK, I'm going to shut up and add Rush to my station.

Posted by: Jay at October 23, 2006 08:02 PM

I love your product :) I am have found a new band that I enjoy and the album has made my x- mas wishlist :)

2 features to consider:

1) Highlighting a song or artist so the artist/album/ song goes into a wish list ..that way when I hear something I like it can remind me of what I want :)

2) Access to above wishlist, and if it could be copyable or even emailable that would be great...but I think marketing wise for you making it printable, with your logo / website watermarked onto the printing (and mabe even the (gasp) ad on the right hand margin. If you could also make it "copy and pasteable" the users could even save you the expense of hooking up the whole email service and copy and paste it themselves, thereby also copying and pasting the ads of your sponsers.

Again, I truly enjoy this service and plan to be "tuning in" to my favorite DJs :)

Posted by: shdwfriend at October 23, 2006 08:44 PM

so many great suggestions so far. thanks again to all who have posted, and to those who will post!

shdwfriend, I'm happy to be able to tell you that the wish list features you are asking about are already available! from the pandora tuner (the music player), you can bookmark songs to your profile page by putting the cursor over the album art, then clicking on the up-arrow there (the menu). there's an option there to bookmark any song or artist. try it!

best,

Helloooo!!

This site is phenomenal! Music is a hobby of mine which can absorb huge amounts of my time. To those not prone to the "disease", my devotion of hours is an enigma. However, I'm reassured there are other "crazies" such as myself thanks to the existence of Pandora.

Having never taken music theory, major and minor tones etc. are a mystery to me; I just know when I like a song. Thank you for spending countless (!) hours breaking down songs into tangible components. When you play songs I love but didn't request, it proves there's an effective methodology in place. And then there's the thrill of being introduced to music I've never heard but find appealing. Please don't wake me from this fabulous dream! I'm soooo happy!!

I haven't spent enough time exploring the site so I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to request a band be "pandora'd" --but, please add "Marth and the Muffins" to your ever-expanding list. :)

What about "Round the Bend" or "Side of the Road" (both Beck) as possible names?

I like simply, "The Box".

I get great instrumental music with a station called "Al Hirt" radio. Try it!

How about "Carbon Dating," which is a scientific method to figure out the age of an object? It could also be taken as a way to date alot of people at the same time...or copycat dating?

Ey, why not call it That is What I Want?

I think there's a song by that name...

I have not only been living under a rock but under a boulder! O.M.G! I absolutely LOOOOOVVEEE Pandora. You are a life-saver! I have been in mourning for months now because our only adult urban station in Boston (WILD) disappeared into the night--literally. Granted it wasn't the only station I listened to but I really enjoyed listening to classic Shalimar, Luther, Minnie Ripperton, Midnight Star along with the mix of the new with Eric Bennet, Donnell Jones, Lionel Richie and Chris Brown in the mornings. *sigh* BUT PANDORA has altered my musical listening world! I had planned on buying a XM radio but this is the next best thing to it! Your service is amazing and I will be telling "my whole world" about it! Starting with fans of the Van Hunt website. They will absolutely love it too! Woo hoo! Radio may be dead but the music rocks the box at Pandora!
