CMJ Day One

Well it wasn't a CMJ show, but since we got here early this year, I just had to go see some music last night. Feeling that I'll probably get more than my fill of indie rock in the coming days, I decided to cleanse the palate with something else. Checking the listings in Time Out NY, I noticed that Les Paul does a weekly show every Monday at the Iridium. That's five blocks from my hotel! Choice made.

The show was charming, and Les Paul told a great story about being a kid dying to learn the third chord in a certain song (I admit, I have forgotten which song it was - anyone know? maybe he's told this story before...). He and his friends went to see Gene Autry in concert, and every time that chord came around in the song, Les's friend would turn on a flashlight and Les would draw in another one of the notes in the chord. Autry stopped the show, saying he'd played that song hundreds of times in hundreds of towns, but he'd never had a light come on every time he played a D7! He ended up bringing Les paul on stage to ask him what they were up to. Can you imagine? Gene Autry and Les Paul on the same stage together? Amazing.

One other cool surprise was the cameo by Harold Bradley, who is the most recorded guitarist of all time. He played on Crazy by Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison's Only the Lonely, Roger Miller's King of the Road, Jeannie C. Riley's Harper Valley PTA, Tammy Wynette's Stand By Your Man, and so many more. I was totally starstruck.

Here's a pic of Mr. Bradley:

We're headed out to see some shows... Will post highlights and pics tomorrow...

cheers,
mz

OK, am I the only one who reads this blog who has no idea what CMJ is? Communist Midget Journal? Cabbage Mabob Jabber? Colossal Monuments to Jagermeister? Crazy Monkey Juice? :)

For those of us out of the know, do tell. Is this related to the town halls that Pandora has been doing? Or the music that you are adding to the library?

Thanks.
