Sardines in Orlando!

HouseBlend1.jpg
Well, somehow we managed to squeeze over 70 people into a space meant for 35. Thanks for being good sports everyone. Really great evening of food and music talk. Wonderful to see so many people show up, especially as the spot was a little out of the way. Walked away with some good insights from the evening (including the fact that I may have Journey in my genome...). Lots of discussion about celebrity playlists, artist-based stations, and improving the buying experience - too many songs/artists not available. Definitely something we'd like to figure out.

Also pleased to have picked up a good collection of local CDs from musicians in attendance. They've been handed to the music genome team.

HouseBlend5.jpg

If anyone has any pictures from the evening - I"d love to post em... send them over.

Tom, thanks for the post on The Practice Room, and to friends at the Digital Media Alliance. Love the online, indie network.

And Tim, thanks for this one too: http://timvansant.com/otoh/

Coming back to Florida in a few months for the Winter Music Festival in Miami. Should be fun.

Cheers. Tim (Founder)

I was emailed this address to listen and I was really pleased. This so enjoyable to listen to because I'm introduced to a lot of artist that I would have never experienced but yet they are exactly what I want to hear plus I get to listen to my favorites. I think you guys are outstanding and I have switched from listening to my saved tunes on iTunes to listening to you all day at work.

Hi!
I'm a Chilean guy that enjoy your great Pandora Radio.
It's really the best thing in the web.
I hope you still improving, and i still enjoying.
Thank a lot

Well, I just read Jacks comment and I think I will go a little further...this is craZzy brilliant!!! Love it!! I live in the Bay Area and I had heard-through-the-grapevine type of thing about the Music Genome Project. I thought - yea, that's a really great concept, I hope it works out...so fast forward a bit and (randomly) I stumble on Pandora while web searcher-ing (for any music at that point) O.K. - I'm pretty hard to impress but WOW! I don't think I have to go searcher-ing any more...(ps-for kicks, I hooked my mother up with a station and she is having a ball...the only downside is she wishes you ran a match-making service and would find me a husband...thanks a lot guys)

Hey Tim,
Come to Santa Fe, New Mexico and hear this wonderful singer-songerwriter named Lisa Carman.
(I noticed that Santa Fe isn't on your trip)
She's one of many great artists here but I think she's great. I back other artists as a bass player at times but I'm really impressed with her music and would love her music to be in the Genome Project.
her website is:

I plan to use this site a lot, its great. I think you should save the artists that people like, or give the thumbs up to or something, to their account so that they can come back later and know what albumn to buy. also, you dont know slowreader, check them out, they're fucking wonderful. thank you so much, good by.

I am thinking that a more complex rating system (maybe a 5-point scale) instead of the current "like it/ don't like it" scale might work a lot better. Sometimes, I like an artist a lot, somtimes I sort of like them, etc, but there's no way to express strength of preference. Otherwise, I love Pandora!

Posted by: Jen at August 10, 2006 08:05 PM

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!
Best "Radio" concept, and better radio than in my car??? Can you package it to go please. This will spread like wild fire on a hot summer day, grats!

So many people will be opened to new music that they would have never the experience in this life. Keeping on Listening, Life Tunes.

Can one select an artist, i.e. Wilco, and have only their music played as opposed to similar style type music?

Posted by: paul at August 11, 2006 03:52 AM

I absolutely cant say enough good things about Pandora, so I will mention the only thing I dont like... I wish I could block an artist altogether, if I dont like one fleetwood mac song, I dont want to hear any more, and I certainly dont want to hear Lindsay Buckingham or Christine McVie... anyway can you tell what came up on my playlist that made me go what? I absolutely love the service, and have it as my start up page on every computer that I have to interact with at school, home and work. Keep up the fabulous work, and thank you thank you, thank you!

And still no one bothering to make the player work with the latest version of Flash (9)...
Update your flash version, and you can no longer use Pandora. Oh joy!
:(

Hi 345,

Pandora works fine in all our tests with Flash 9 (Mac, Win in IE, Firefox, Safari and Camino). Can you tell me a bit more about the problems you are having?

One tiny request - it would be great to have more buying options besides iTunes and Amazon -- the RealPlayer Music Store, for example. I also agree with the person that suggested a more granular scale of like/dislike. Keep up the good work!

Read about U in USA Weekend, checked U out and am enjoying U.
MARKETING IDEA!!!!! I am marketing manager for the touring stage play "The Life of Marvin Gaye". We start on Sept 5-6, 2006 in Montgomery, AL and will play cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, as well as the smaller cities like Montgomery and Jackson, MS. The tour is scheduled to run until the end of 2007. Is this something that U would like to be involved with?
Please give it some thought.

Posted by: Steve Myers at August 14, 2006 03:19 PM

anyway, hope Pandora could find more and more unknown and low profile bands under the scenes.
Who knows, that someday Pandora could create something great better than Yahoo Music Launch :)
All the best Pandora and staff!!! Love this site!!!

1. Like the concept but not sure what differentiates from other music services(Rhapsody comes to mind) which also allow user defined radio stations based on one or more artists and then play music by similar artists. Perhaps marketing could address what sets Pandora apart?

2. Would like to be able to fine tune the Pandora selections by give weights to the various attributes captured about an artist or a song. For example I have tried to set up a radio station comprising British Pop artists from 1980 onwards. No matter which artists I select, Pandora insist on adding non-British artists. So if for example, country of origin or artist' decade were two of the attributes captured by Pandora and I could tell Pandora to give these attributes additional weight, I could better tailor the decisions made by Pandora.

3. I saw you are looking for a music analyst specializing in German music. Sehr gut! I am a fan of German rock (Kraftwerk, Amon Duul, Neu! etc.) and am planning on using Pandora to expand my horizons. I asked Pandora to set up a station based on the music of F.S.K. (Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle) but it couldn't find this artist, so your new analyst has their first assignment!

Posted by: Bill Z. at August 14, 2006 06:54 PM

i tried searching for an artist named "Lea Salonga", and i was somehow disappointed for not having her included in your artists collection. she may be an unknown(?) but she made the Philippines proud by winning the TONY for her portrayal of Kim in Miss Saigon, she also sang the theme song in disney's Mulan. she's a great singer, hope you guys take time to listen to her music. your Genome Project is great, keep up the good work...

Hi And congrats on a well thought out concept and site...
Its a great piece of work that would seem to have an awesome potential..
I`m a musician and have ..for years toyed with the concept of a database to correlate for particular musical tastes..it started with the familiar -paying $15 for a CD and liking only a song..if I had a few more programming skills I`d probably apply for a job because I find it intriguing
My perfect future interface might have a "too much" dialogue that came with the thumbs down button with however many factors/qualities
to choose from ..such as say .."too many notes" or "too quiet" "too busy" "too dark" "too light" "too much country" "too much rock" etc..you probably get the idea by now ...If you told me it was too complex a dialogue to incorporate I wouldn`t be surprised but perhaps you could limit the factors to say 20...
Anyhow feel free to tell me its a stupid idea if you really think so..
and thanks for the site and music

I would really like to be able to place an emphasis on some of the genomes. I find that sometimes adding a new song takes the music in directions other that I was looking to go. While I appreciate the idea of widening my palette of musical taste, I am also on a journey of band/artist discovery in my long favored genre.

Stupendous effort, everyone! Definitely a timely idea, with a sweet website to match.

However, it has a long way to go before I will be raving about it to anyone.

First, I agree absolutely that it should feature MANY, MANY more artists. I think your roster is just too small to be able to match effectively. And I think your focus should be on more lower profile, underground, and/or lesser-known artists. I don't want to hear music I already know - I want to hear NEW music!

Second, I 100% agree that more musical taste direction is necessary. One must be able to pinpoint exactly which features of the artist's music they like and, ideally, mix n' match with any other styles, genres, moods, qualities, etc. to create the ULTIMATE, truly personal stations.

Thanks guys.

Hey, Has Anybody Created A Station Made Exclusively From Cover Songs? What Results Has THAT Yielded? I Was Just Curious As To What Playlist Pandora Would Generate Since The Original Tracks Would Already Have Lots Of Street Cred, And Yet The Twists Would Really Add A Little Sumthin Sumthin, Know What I Mean Vern? If Anybody's Tried, Post The Prelims Here. Thanks!

Hey Tim,
This station is the sweet gideon. You are, essentially, putting what people want to hear right in their laps in the most direct way possible. One thing that I think is great is how quickly one can access great music on their first visit, no nonsense. Honestly i think you are working with one of the best vehicles for promoting music. Thanks so much.

I live in Maryland between Washington DC and Baltimore. Are you coming in the area? I would love to attend one of your meetings. I play music with a group of guys, collectively named Anapra, and we would love to participate in and promote this project, an act much more readily undertaken if we were able to put some of our own music on there *wink wink*. How would I go about sending you music?

Thanks for your artistic integrity and passion to pursue excellence on your work.

I'm thrilled with Pandora - I listen most of the day at work.
I don't think that a scaled preference would benefit (and yes, I have at times wanted to shout I LOVE that Song!) I have a hard enough time just giving a thumbs up/down. My advice is to K.I.S.S.
Much appreciated new music and Kudos to all of you involved in producing it :)
Thanks!

hey, i just found your site at work a few days ago, and it's pretty good. Great spread of genres. i mean, they've got good metal, jazz, and alternative. but do you think you could add some of the better classical music stuff like Rachmaninov? i love his piano concertos.

Posted by: archangel at August 16, 2006 12:05 PM

hey its well, jeremy. i was just contiplating the idea of possibly providing a section of radio that would allow us as listeners to enjoy the songs that we already selected as the songs we like. meaning compile the songs already listened to into a good pile and discard the ones we dont like to a memory in attempt to not hear it again. that was redundant i know but hopefully u get my drift and if u already ironed out this quagmire then i apologize. but, i love this program keep it up. my discovery lies in pandora. cheers!!!

I think it would be really neat if you could take a song that is playing and move it to another station. For example, I have one station with is called "so very sappy" and it has sad songs or one which are really slow. if one of those types of songs came on another one of my stations, I would love to move it over to my "so very sappy"...
How could would that be?
Just a thought though...

Two things:
1. I LOVE PANDORA!! Im a huge music fan, but was only introduced to rock and metal about two years ago, and this site has helped me find new artists I enjoy listening to.
2. Just a suggestion, can u add something to the radio that shows how much time the song is and how much time remains? I think I have a slight OCD because this bothers me a lot, but wont keep me from listening. Thanks!

Posted by: Coleen at August 30, 2006 05:19 PM

Hi Hanne,

If you look VERY closely at the tuner slide displaying the information for the currently-playing song, you can see a teeny tiny little progress bar at the bottom of the album art.

This teeny tiny progress bar gives you a visual indication of how much of the song has played, and how much remains.

Hope this helps your OCD!

Thanks for listening!

I really like the service it has been great. But I have to ask who thought "Air Attack over Kabul Airfield" by James Whithead should classify as "New Age" It just isn't quite the right fit for relaxation music. If I ever start a military theme station I'll consider it. :)

Excellent idea this project is! I was so happy to find Pandora... But, why can't you suggest a song and have it actually played, instead of something similiar? And, if you type in an artist's name, can it play only that artist's songs?? That would make things even better!!!!!

i would just like to say that the music genome project just saved my life because my dad decided that he would go and delete all of my music off our computer. I had just heard about pandora.com from one of my friends and it has been a life saver for me. I think that there should be a way to also have the option of listening to songs with similar lyrics of the song that you want, so if that is not a huge amount of work that would be awesome then people could also explore music outside of some of their favorite genres just cause they like the lyrics. Thank you all so much. Landon W.

Pandora has been the backdrop to my working day since I followed up on a recommendation a couple of weeks ago. My station is really getting to know me now, it plays me so much stuff I already like and I get some great leads for new bands to explore.

I am a musician myself and I really enjoy songs using particular cadences, and devices such as keeping a constant bass note and using lots of inversions ... Genesis and Yes did a lot of that. Is there any scope for adding classifications like that to the genome?

I read also that you use a greater range of attributes when cataloguing jazz and Latin music than for other forms. Do you/could you also extend the range for progressive music, which is on the whole a lot more complex than more mainstream rock?

Don't stop the rockin' guys ... go Pandora!

- Ian.

Tim,
Thanks for a wonderful evening in Orlando. My wife and I atended, and learned a lot about what I consider to be one of the best Web sites around; it is my favorite site. I really enjoyed the history of Pandora, and am glad to see that you are still focused on keeping it a Web radio station. I have my whole office using pandora (it was real easy!), and now my wife has her office using it as well.

Thanks for all of your hard work, many of us are benefititng from it every day. I hope you return to Orlando soon, the Pandora word is spreading.

In Florida's Lake County (25 miles west of Orlando), try visiting the local bars with music in historic Eustis. On every "first Friday" of the month, they usually have 3 different local bands playing on the street and people walk the historic district and listen to different types of music. Tomorrow, Nov. 3d, it is Margaritaville night with a Jimmy Buffet tribute group plus others. If you come to this area, let me know and I can get more specifics.

What I would like to have the ability to do is pick my station based on true music genre such as Gospel, Contemporary Gospel, Rock Gospel as so on. Your pick is by music or song and since the Gospel music I listen to is close to R&B I also get R&B music on my station, which is okay but I would like to be able to have the option if I wanted to listen to just that type of Gospel music, Gospel and R&B mixed or just R&B.

I'm having a Pandora / flash 9 player problem in both IE7 and Firefox 2.0.0.1

I'm running under win xp sp2 fully patched. I have an intel pentium on an asus board, with an ATI AIW 9600 graphics card

Pandora works great when I downgrade to flash 7; but with flash 9 I get an error message telling me that I have to go to the settings and enable local storage. In fact, however, flash local storage IS enabled. At the 1MB level.

I love this concept.. it lets me hear so many artists I wouldn't otherwise listen to, be exposed to. just love it. I work to music and I love all the new influences. I am a painter and music is an integral part of the creative experience. come to Melbourne, Fl. the coast is much more laid back than Orlando,

I know the meetup was a while back, but Orlando/Central Florida has some awesome music ;)

You guys should check out Little Reggies, they do booking for local bands and such in and around Florida, really great, and have put together some great shows; with great bands and music.
