SAN FRANCISCO TOWN HALL ROUND UP!
Wow - what memorable evenings we have had!

Thanks to everyone who showed up for the Zeum and SWIG gatherings over the past week. They were great opportunities to hear from the hometown crowd directly - long overdue. Particularly enjoyable for the many Pandora employees who were finally able to attend a town hall meeting in person, rather than rely on blogs and emails. Special for all of us.
We had 230 folks show up at Zeum... !!

Thanks to Ebba and co. for being, shall we say 'flexible' with the firecode! We had well over 400 RSVPs and had to quickly figure out another place to host the 150+ folks who we had to redirect. Fortunately, we had an event on the calendar with AMP3 for the following week. Smaller, but just as much fun.

Lots of great questions and comments on both nights: UPC codes on homemade CDs, "add this song to another station" style feature requests, the need for greater variety on playlists, suggestions for Norwegian music, more granular feedback options, community features, and a lovely testimonial on a Mahalia Jackson-driven discovery of little known gospel phenom Sister Gertrude Morgan... to name a few.
We really do learn a lot at these events. A number of the engineering team working on the features attended both events, so they really got to hear firsthand what people want. I know I speak for everyone from Pandora in saying that these are profoundly rewarding and motivating for all of us. Thanks for sharing your passion, enthusiasm and affection.
Cheers.

I really appreciated being there. Thanks for being so open and for listening to your listeners!

I can't figure out who to write to to say WOW! I just discovered Pandora and literally had to tear myself away to go to bed. At first I entered "Drive=By Truckers," and now I've heard four different artists who I have never heard before. I am so very excited about this site! Thank you to those who put "Pandora" together!

I've been a Pandora member since the very beginning. The town hall meeting was very informative but that wasn't the best part. I left really feeling like I was an integral part of Pandora's community. Of all the social networks I belong to, Pandora is far superior because people at Pandora are passionate about music and they go above and beyond to really listen to their members.
I feel so proud to be a Pandora user.

Would be nice if some of the attendees would post accounts of the meeting, and what they tought about it. Maybe someone even has a protocol?
You can post this in the www.pandora-forum.com.
/me still waiting for Tim to come to Europe.

I commute weekly from Chicago to San Francisco and the SWIG event was very enjoyable. I love the energy and buzz in the room!
Here are some comments:
(1) any plans to format, stream Pandora to mobile devices?
(2) website look and feel - since this is a direct-to-consumer service, could you "jazz up" the website. Right now, it has this "Mies van der Rohe" feel to it.
(3) Mac formatting - the look and feel should be the same on a Windows machine or a Mac...I only bring this up because an investor at my first start-up brought this up to me as a "pet peeve". He's an avid Mac user (although they account for only 2% of the population). His firm invested $5 million in us, so we had 5 million reasons to make it "look right" on a Mac. :-)
(4) Roadshow - could you add Chicago to the next town hall roadshow in the Fall?
(5) Squeezebox - could you bring / promote the Squeezebox at the town halls?
(6) User Rewards - any plans to reward / incent super, uber Pandora users (maybe for turning in CDs, providing feedback on "beta" features & functions, referrals to Pandora, etc...)?
(7) Celebrity Users - maybe as a "fun thing to do", could you get celebrities to provide Pandora testimonials? This is similar to the way radio stations ask listeners to get their celebrities friends to call into the radio station to support charitable causes. I'd like to know what Pandora "radio stations" Abe Vigoda listens to. :-)
Keep up the great work and continued success.
See you in Chicago.
Cheers,
Shaunak

Tim is clearly among the bay area's great Founders, having stuck with a vision way ahead of its time to manifest it into something so useful, impactful and joyful for all! Great companies are often defined by how closely they stay in touch with their users and Tim's effort to stay in touch and gather feedback is admirable. Bravo!

Please *don't* jazz up the site as another poster suggested. It clean and simple -- no more than it needs to be.

You have to come to montreal. Something's happening deserving your attentive ears. Should come for the Osheaga festival.

How about adding song lyrics to the Song Backstage pages?
Posted by: Adam at July 28, 2006 09:52 PM
I thank God everyday for the Internet and what it's done for music - primarily given us access to bands and sounds previously given broad exposure by big labels and their marketing budgets. Pandora is incredible. I've been telling all my friends about it. The first station I made was We Are Scientists and immediately I learned about three other bands I had never heard of.
As far as the interface, please keep it the way it is. It's simple, it's lite, it's all it needs to be.
I would love to be able to toggle back to songs that have already played and listen to them again.
Great work guys. Can I have a job?

Explicit Lyrics Problem in Workplace Environment.
Hi Pandora!
Can't tell you how much we all appreciate the service here at Uchicago. But, one thing that sometimes comes up is the problem of explicit lyrics in the workplace environment..
For example, all of a sudden, we'd get Dan Bern's "No missing link" song about aliens fucking the monkey (again and again...). While we can give it a thumbs down, it would be nice if we had a preference to "censor" songs with explicit words from certain stations.

I don't know why I haven't heard about Pandora until now. I think my friends are selfish and mean-spirited and are conspiring to keep this delightful thing to themselves. Not friends. Frenemies.
Thank you, Tim, for Pandora. I love the simplicity and the user-friendliness. I love that if I say "hey, I don't like Jack Johnson so much" you cool it with the jam bands and get back to my sweet, silky REM tunes. Thank you for showing me new stuff I might never have stumbled upon otherwise.
I look forward to becoming more familiar with this service. So far my jaw drops with every click. I would hug you if I met you. Thank you, again!

Two big changes have happened since discovering Pandora: someone else is programming my playlists which makes them more interesting!, and my street cred has gone up since introducing my son and friends to Pandora.
Keep up the marvelous work!

This may not be the place for this comment, but I can't think of another... There seems to be a quirk on my jazz station. It seems to like to stick to a particular type of soloist for a number of tracks (guitar, piano, bass, etc.) Takes away from the random feel. Is this accidental or on purpose? Is it a way of avoiding it feeling as if it is chopping and changing??
Posted by: John at July 31, 2006 02:43 PM
i would rather it not take any longer to load than it has to, i already have a really slow computer, and i just wanna listen to music and not wait for stuff to load, besides, why are you wanting to try and pretty it up if you're only going to be listening to it, unless you are watching the player the whole time

Hi Tim and Lucia,
I just wanted to stop by and tell you and your extremely talented staff how grateful I am for all of your hard work. I'm a former musician as well as a (former) avid music listener -- I'm at "that age" where some but not much of the mainstream music I hear on the radio doesn't appeal to me anymore. Pandora has turned me on to bands and songs that resonate perfectly (underscore "perfectly") with my tastes, and I know I would've never found them on my own. I love listening to music again!!! Thanks so much, and I look forward to more!

What About Covers? Would It Be Possible To Create A Station Playing Covers And Hopefully Pandora Gets The Hints And Recco's More Of Them?
Posted by: Oh By The Way, at August 1, 2006 04:00 AM
Hello, I was just wondering if there was a way to keep track and playback any of the songs we listen to? It would be nice if we could keep a rolling archive of all the songs we liked, instead of just bookmarking the song?

Hi Tim
I want to thank you and your staff for all the hard work you guys do for all of us, i'm from Venezuela (South America) and if it wasnt for your site i would be still listening that punishment from God called "reggeaton", your radio is the escape window that i have from this music and thats the reason why i made it my home page, i even have the link for pandora on my msn nickname because i think this is the best website ever.
I can't ask you to come to Venezuela because i know is like asking the Pope to come to my house, but now you know that you guys have a fan down here that listen to your radio everyday and it thanks God every single day for it.
Posted by: Michael at August 1, 2006 09:19 AM
Hey guys,
Great job with the site. One thing I would definitely appreciate would be a "mix radio" station, which would randomly bring up songs from all of the radio stations I've made. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Although I would have loved to make it to the town hall meeting, I was out of state at the time. However, after using Pandora's wonderful service for three months I have a few comments.
The interface is wonderful. More importantly is that the system of using the Music Genome Project to identify similar tastes actually works, whereas other services (using algorithms based on similar purchases, etc.) do not. I really love Pandora for this.
I have often wondered why when I give a thumbs up for a band and it's song, I rarely hear more than just that one song on my radio station. This possible might be that you only have permission to play that one song, but if I'm going to purchase an album, I'd like to hear everything that artist has done. It might just be one song of theirs that I like, but I'd like to know that.
Streaming to other devices would be wonderful. Mostly, I listen to Pandora on my home and work computer, but I have looked into other possible options and the Squeezebox just isn't something I'm interested in. With the possibility of future Wifi enabled DAPs, I believe that streaming Pandora to other devices other than flash enabled devices would be nice.
Keep up the great work!

Well, I've been listening to Pandora for a year now and it's become more addictive than ever. It seems like I hear a band that I've never heard of 2-3 times a week. I thought I knew my music but Pandora has proven me wrong. I am right now listening to my Nine Inch Nails station and heard a band called Severed. No clue they existed but they definatly got a thumbs up. This is still the best thing going bar none. The new Backstage feature is friggin awesome. I live in the Cincinnati, Ohio area and would gladly show up at any event you might have. I would also like to congradulate you on the clean but effective web site. No muss no fuss.

Hey guys, I really love your work here at Project: Pandora. Do you have any plans to head down to Southern California by chance?
I live eight hours away from SF and that sort of trip with gas prices the way they are isn't really feasible!
Posted by: Ikari Gullwing at August 2, 2006 09:45 PM
I was in Europe last week and couldn't come to the SF event. I love Pandora.
1) Don't jazz up the interface. Keep it simple. It's bad enough as it is (oddly placed buttons, odd labels). If you want, create multiple interfaces and let people choose their interface. And add skins.
2) Sometimes, it shuts off by itself. It loses the connection. Can you have it check for the stream and restart itself?
3) Stream to a MP3 player: Finally, a reason to buy one.
4) I'd love to replace my car radio with Pandora. It really stands out how much better Pandora is than every radio station in the San Francisco Bay Area. No idea how this could be done.
5) And please add Arabic music, Indian raga, and many more genres. A bit-of-everything showcase station might be a good idea.

Hey programers in the box!
I am a loyal, addicted, listener of Pandora radio. In fact work just doesnt get doesnt get done at the office as fast unless I'm plugged in, and my boss knows it.
Anyway this situation has happened in more than one ocasion. I have had radio stations appear on my menu that I didnt request or design. It's not a big, big, deal to me because all I have to do is delete them. But it is a big deal, because my Pandora stations are personable and I dont like invaders attaching then selves to my list.
Thankyou for your eyes and your ears LOL :)

Two thumbs up from me! I will tell everyone I know about Pandora...no one should be neglected.

Some friends of mine told me about Pandaro last month, i was in a hurry because of my studies so i couldn't take a look before, but now i'm really glad i did.
It is very nice to see how much passionate you are. You really involve yourselves in that site and for us, listeners, it's a god send.
May you be thanked by all music fans from all over the world.

I just saw Chorus Line at the Curran and tried to make a station from What I Did For Love, a most beautiful song, but it didn't come up. Can you add it?
Thanks for this amazing Web site.

So who thinks there is nothing good for you that is addictive? PANDORA IS ADDICTIVE AND GOOD FOR YOU! I f*$($&(#&%#ING think the site rocks, trances, bounces and pounces...all over my musical moods! I can jam from speed metal to radiohead and on...sometimes i wish i could replay a "session" but then again i like the randomness of it, like life -it is unpredictable and that my friends is a F($*%($%&(#ING beautiful thing! I want a bumper sticker that says J'ADORE PANDORA!
Sweet people you are great- sharing music is very spiritual,
I'm off to Pand...

First of all, Pandora is THE coolest thing going...
I don't know how to phrase it but, when searching for my favorite band in San Fran, the mother hips, i was suprised by the songs that played. I was not bummed at all, I actually was impressed by what i heard. But I was looking for bands that I personally know that have been associated with them. For example, the band itself has broken off into different directions creating their own solo sounds. Tim Bluhm solo, with the Involvement featuring Pinata (5foottuesday), Greg Loicanno with Billy Midnight in The Sensations. More than that, Jackpot, is another band that could fit in there too. So what Am I saying? I don't quite know. Take it or leave it, But
Keep it going!
Thanx for listening to my babble

I love Pandora. I just found it yesterday. Can you have songs in a differnt language. When I put Edith Piaf I thought I would get other French singers of her genre. Or for instance Spanish singers etc.
I hope you keep it up. Elsie

Guys, you're coming to L.A. I know that, you know that. But let's seriously think about this. You've got only ONE trip to southern california. The two biggest cities? San Diego and Los Angeles. But since you can't hit both of them, and odds are a citizen in one won't drive out to the other (2 hours, much more with L.A. traffic), why not establish middle ground, primarily Anaheim or Orange County. Especially Orange County. If you go to Orange County, primarily South Orange County (can you see me trying to move you guys?), why don't you try to go to these places
A) Trabuco Oaks Steakhouse: Great steakhouse near Irvine, like twenty minutes away, whose served the liked of Ronald Reagan and William Lyon (Lyon Houses). Seriously, try the Cowboy steak. It's a couple pound steak that'll make you puke. Delightful
B) Have your meeting at one of the colleges, which have absolutely huge rooms. Just come here
Posted by: Cliff C at September 17, 2006 02:34 PM
You guys should add The Negro Problem and Stew. Stew (who is black) basically is TNP, though it started as much more of a group. His albums under both names have many wonderful tracks. Think Jimmy Webb meets XTC and gets them to record with the Fifth Dimension with guest lyrics by Stokely Carmichael ... and that's just a start.
Also, while you have a live Plimsouls album, what about their others?
