...and more of Pandora's Music Analysts...

Here's one more in our series of blog posts that showcase some of our Music Analysts. Much of the musical output of Pandora staff doesn't happen to be in our collection, but we thought you might like to know of some Pandora stations that feature the men and women who analyze all of the music you listen to! (click here for the first , second and third Analyst spotlights.)

Jeff Anthony, Pandora's percussionist extraordinaire (pictured here), has quite the impressive resume. In addition to playing live with all manner of accomplished musicians, he shows up playing the drums on the following Pandora stations. Sheryl Crow: I think you may have heard of her? Jeff drums on her C'mon C'mon album, a personal favorite of mine. He also plays with the all-Pandora band Michael Zapruder's Rain of Frogs, who just released a new CD (more on them next week). You can find him on the Dahlia station, which is an electronic duo, and on the Tom Varley and the Sun Dogs station, who describe themselves as "good ol' fashion tiki bar music from Portland."

189166109_069c113777_m.jpg

Jeff's drumming can also be found on a Jenny Kerr station, which features roots & blues harmonica-driven Americana. He spent much of last year touring internationally with the Eric McFadden Trio, a brilliant, frighteningly unique psycho rock band that's difficult not to love. (update: Jeff tells me that he also did a lot of touring internationally with Chuck Prophet last year.)

Evan Francis, who may well win the prize for Smilingest Music Analyst, shows up on several Pandora stations as well. He plays sax in The Ian Carey Quintet, which is jazz, and also with The Industrial Jazz Group. You can also hear him on Spaceheater radio, in the vein of instrumental hiphop/downtempo electronica.

Marina Garza, one of our newest hires, is one of our Latin Music Specialists. She plays with the Orquesta D'Soul, which she describes as Latin Salsa Pop. I notice that Pandora refers to their music as having "danceable grooves." I concur.

Tom Griesser plays sax in the Brass Monkey Brass Band, a high-octane 8-piece ensemble in the style of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the ReBirth Brass Band, with a lineup of trumpets, trombones, saxophones, tuba, and drums. In addition to their fiery original compositions, their repertoire ranges from traditional New Orleans favorites such as "When The Saints Go Marching In" to renditions of tunes by Zappa and Led Zeppelin.

Is saxophonist Evan Francis the same saxophonist Evan Francis that played with Mike Keneally & Beer for Dolphins on the Dancing album? And plays flute?

Just came across your service today.

Love it. Makes my Rhapsody subscription more valuable, too. Just a thought......

I am a music lover! Your site is the best. I only been listening to it for 3 days. I have told all of my friends! Keep up the great work:)

the player and the idea are great. but the design and colors could be more fancy (maybe user definied player, different colors, functions,...just individual). thank you for the possibility to listen.

what up, lerch? yeah, its me. how're things? evan

Pandora is pretty sweet and I enjoy finding new music. I have a potential suggestion instead of just having the choices of "I like it" or "don't like it" for rating music maybe you guys could have a further category "It is o.k., but i would like more" and then a further menu appears with the traits of the radio station that the song comes from. Then the user clicks on the traits they want and more music like that is played. I understand that potentially this could provide a problem because the song that is already being played supposedly fits into that category has those traits, but also maybe instead of traits that fit that station, there could be a stock list of traits that the user can choose from. A similar menu could be applied for "I like it" and "I don't like it," but with the added caption "because."
Your service is good even without these additions, but this is just something I thought might be cool. Also if what I said is confusing, I can explain it better.

Just wanted to say I love you guys, too. A friend told me about it last year, and it was a godsent. Been loving it ever since.
Have you heard of Devil Doll? Give them/her a listen!

Hi, I´m from Ecuador (Southamerica) pandora to me is the greatest invention in the internet since Napster. but i think you´ll need more analysis with the music in spanish, the depuration es quite poor, there´s lot of kind of music all over latinamerica, so it must need even more analysis than the other music. PLEASE try to add music of "Los Tres" it´s a band from Chile, it´s my favoryte.

Thank´s alot!

I am not sure if I should post this here or elsewhere.

I tried to find Diane Renay or one of her songs such as Kiss Me Sailor or Navy Blue because I wanted to have a station of early sixties (pre-Beatles) Bubblegum. The system did not recognize her or any of her songs.

Also it took me in a bizarre direction when I put Instant Karma by John Lennon as a song. It sent me to a bunch of Christmas songs.

I like uptempo songs much more than slow songs, but often it would suggest slow songs after I put an uptempo song in the box. Is there a way that you can program it not to mix slow songs with uptempo songs? I will reject most ballads and slow songs.

Let me know if I should post such comments elsewhere.

ok so i just found this site reccently, and God its the coolest thing, its freakin awesome. you guys have done an incredible job. thanks so much.

Posted by: jordan at July 17, 2006 09:43 PM

so, i am definitely digging your site. i think the only things i don't like are that i can only access bookmarked song lists on the computer that i bookmarked them on...i'd like to be able to access them from any computer. 2nd, i am frustrated because i can't buy a bunch of this awesome music i hear on my stations on iTunes because they don't have them yet...but i'm hard at work requesting them. THANK YOU, I LOVE PANDORA

Posted by: Katie at July 18, 2006 05:07 PM

Fantastic sight, not just the ultimate radio tuner, but a very valuable research tool.

Do you only feature "released" music, and if not, how would one go about getting one's own music included?

Posted by: Peter at July 19, 2006 10:12 AM

Great site! My boyfriend just told me about it a few days ago, and i couldn't stop listening to it!
One idea: i'm a huge fan of Broadway showtunes, and i couldn't seem to find any of those...

Posted by: Megan at July 19, 2006 02:00 PM

First, want to compliment you on a great site. A coworker just turned me on to it this week & I'm really enjoying my own customized station.

A lot of my favorite bands are in your database, but I wish you would include more of them, like Vas, Azam Ali & Vox.

Also, I don't see any classical music at all.

Finally, we can add music by song title and artist. However, there are anthology albums etc. where I only know the title of the album/cd. So, I'd like to be able to add music by album/cd title.

Posted by: barbara at July 19, 2006 02:34 PM

Love the way this has bought to my attention artists I had never heard of.
I am very much into the music of the 30' 40's and 50's (Sinatra, Johnny Hartman et al)and I have heard at least 10 new artists (old and contemporary) doing this music.
My only beef is that my other love is classical and opera.
My attempt to create an opera station based around Pavarotti got me an exclusively Christmas music channel B-) and Andrea Bocelli created a channel of Spanish music including Madonna. Greats such as Maria Callas and Tito Gobbi can't be found.
I am sure I just have to be patient (that's a hint.
Keep up the good.

is it possible to export the list of songs I have flagged as the ones I like???

Posted by: Ross Leahy at July 19, 2006 07:59 PM

First, I love this site. Love it. It is my constant companion at work.

Second, how in the world could you go on a roadtrip and NOT STOP IN PHILADELPHIA?!

How did that happen?

Seriously, Philadelphia has one of the hottest music scenes going in EVERY genre. You can't blink in this town without your eyelashes hitting an amazing show of live music.

Check the website, send me an email, let me know when you're coming out here, and I'll give you a list. You will NOT be disappointed.

I like your service. i recently moved to philly from chicago to persue the music field.A curious thing i discovered listening to your service , what do Jeff Beck,Steely Dan and Cameo have in common? You dont know , because you just got into Cameo with "word up",yeah i know you have the older records but your program cant judge what i like by chords. The majikal thing i like about these bands, that they all share is attitude.I asked for a band called Switch i asked for a song by them named "Calling all girls",and you dont have it,i dare every one working there to listen to it and say they dont like it. I myself didnt like it when it came out 25 years ago.But ''Time and distance",in the words of David Lee Roth ,that song is fantastic please add it to all R and b, oh yeah one more if i ask for a band try to stick with that band if you could. I wish someone would have invented album orented funk for the radio maybe you could.Lastly Cameo has a song with Miles Davis called "In the night" maybe you could......

I want to add a radio station for early sixties bubblegum.

The songs that I can think of are not in your database.

I have tried Mission Bell by Donnie Brooks and Please Don't Talk To The Lifeguard by Diane Ray as well as Navy Blue by Diane Renay. I am careful about female selections, because I want it to be distinct from a girlgroups radio station.

Do you have any suggestion for songs from 1960-1964 that are bubblegum and in your database?

For the past few months, while at work, I've enjoyed listening to accuradio. The other day, however, it was temporarily inaccessible, for whatever reason. In my search for another online station I could listen to in the meantime, I stumbled upon pandora. WOW!! I'm impressed!! And, I'm hooked!! Good-bye accuradio!! Hello pandora!! I think pandora is great. My favorite part is the fact that you can personalize it. It's obvious there's been a lot of thought put into the development of this station. It's a winner and, because of that, you can be sure I'll be telling all my friends about it!!

Having said all that, I love pandora just the way it is but since you've stated you're always looking for suggestions, I can make one: have the songs repeatable. In other words, sometimes there will be a song in the playlist I'd really like to listen to again; it'd be great if that was just a click away!!

Thanks for a great station that's a real pleasure to listen to. Keep up the great work, pandora!!

Posted by: Autumn at July 25, 2006 02:47 PM

I think its great.I am hooked - is there a pandora anonymous helpline for addicted teleworkers who dont do any work now they are on pandora?
one thing is that when I put in an artist, such as David Bowie, it played one song from his first album, then a whole lot of folksy guff from other artists of that period, without giving a chance to hear his music from a range of eras- he has gone through a lot of "changes".
after that I crafted stationsmore on individual songs rather than on artists, which gave a better result.

Posted by: David at July 26, 2006 04:28 AM

I'm new to Pandora and only have time to go there occasionally. The last time I visited I put in the artist,Julie Gribble, and found no matches. Her CD "So Typical" is excellent and stands up to many established artists in the folk/country/alternative genres.I'd like to see her included.I'm sure others would this fresh voice also.

Posted by: sue at July 27, 2006 02:32 AM

I tried various things to create an Irish / Celtic station, but no luck. Tried Reel / Lament / Eileen Ivers / Danny Boy. Too bad you are limited to an artist or a song - I would try to enter a descriptor like "Celtic" or "minor key tonality."

(These aren't complaints, just comments!)

Posted by: Don Smith at July 27, 2006 01:17 PM

Just started using the site and I am really liking it. Within minutes I discovered some really cool songs I had not heard before. One thing I don't understand is the deal with only playing so many songs per hour? Something about licenses? I was just getting warmed up when I was shut down.

I've discovered several new songs that I didn't even knew existed before -- but I love this way of finding songs/artists that will help me buy the right CDs/DVDs that will be well worth my investment. THANK YOU Sooooo MUCH for giving us such a way of finding our prefered music styles. This is rocking!

Hey guys, great idea. Love it. Here's a suggestion - you should combine it with an online dating site!! I'd love to find a girl who likes the same mix of bossa nova and funky breaks that I do!! Also could be a good way of boosting the subscription take up...

(... also, not sure why we HAVE to put in a US zip code... considering i'm an aussie!).

I am a 60 year old female, who loves music, but is not a fanatic, a muscian, a napster, or a musicologist...i do not own an Ipod, or any othe electronic gadget past a computer and cell phone (which I only use to make calls!)
I have tried to listen to music through other internet venues, Musicmatch, Windows Media and various others, but they were all too complicated for a techno laggard (personal techno laggard, I own a small market research company and professionaly technology research is one of our special areas)
The point of this is that I just discovered your service through my earthlink account via a newsletter they emailed (I never use my "start page.") I am delighted that there is finally a service that is superlatively easy-to-use. The simple option of entering an artist or song, that then provides similar music all worked out by your analysts is wonderful! I do not have to do any work or complicated set- ups using links, and such to simply listen to music while I work. I ususually end up removing the other programs as I do not have time for all that activity required to hear music, and they usually slow down my computer. I am busy and get frustrated with those "multiple -layered" services. Yours may be the most complicated to date, but it is all behind the scenes, and your staff takes care of the complications. I just pick music and listen in less that 10 seconds. congrats on a really pleasant, useful, winner in the usability field! It is so easy to navigate and much appreciated. Best Regards

Hey Tim and Lucia, I have been listening for a couple of days now and I even pass it to my friend. I am a big Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, R & B, and Reggaeton listener. I have a favorite singer and you complied to my needs. Thank you so much and I was wondering if your making any trips to Florida? If you are please inform me as soon as you find out. Keep up with the good work. Also don't know if you need more input on more spanish artist or lastest songs, but if you do feel free to ask away. Bye for now, A new fan, Peggy

Hey Pandora listeners, whereever you are...

What a great station, even for people like me, who`s musical taste lies somewhere in between Blues (check out Popa Chubby!!NY Blues!!)and Jazz-rock, (like Spiro Gira and Yellow Jackets), there is lots of great stuff to enjoy!!.

Even New York Voices!!! (you never know music `till you listened to the unbelievable musical Arts of NYV!!!)

Thanks!!...Hof

Thanks for all the comments!

Don't worry, classical music and world music (including Celtic) are coming...they're big undertakings, but they'll be worth the wait!

And Mike, try searching 'Guns N' Roses.'

The internet has obvious changed musical distribution. We have entered a future where we will be year end likely be able to download any song or album into our protable devices from wherever we may be litening to music at. The only question that hasn't been fully answered is the one about storage. We are still a bit limited. I think places like Pandora allow us the possibility to get rid of the tendency to want to hold onto some one piece of music. Instead of teying to hold onto some one piece of music that reflects my emotional state, memory, or understanding, I have an entire station that atmospherically capture it. In 24hrs Pandors has taught me to simply enjoy it and then let it go. However, there are still those tunes that pop up that are just too bad ass to let go! How is it all going to be stored? Thank you as one music lover to another.

Just hooked up w/your service for a test drive. Frankly, I don't see how you will be able to match my music tastes using some goofy formula... for example, I only like one song by ABBA, the rest suck. I only liked one song by Daryl Hall, the rest suck. I only like one song by Simply Red, the rest suck. One song by Basia, one song by James Taylor, one song by Foreigner, all the rest suck. See where I'm going with this? So far just about everything you've queued up for me just isn't cutting it...

Posted by: Greg at August 14, 2006 04:04 PM

This website is a godsend for me. It's always been difficult to find songs that I like, but this site has simplified it to a point of ridiculousness! LOVE IT! I have a few suggestions that I think would greatly improve your website.

I think that having a "type" of music to choose from would be great to have. Especially for those who are new to this website and for people like me who would like to experience a completely different genre of music and are unsure where to start.

I think that being able to choose which songs you don't like and then skipping to the next song without limits on how many you can skip in an hour would be highly beneficial to this site. It's sometimes a bit irritating having to listen to a song that you don't like.

Also, when you base a radio station on a song, I think that the first thing that should play is the song you requested.

It would be great if you could repeat songs that you really want to listen to again along with a way to keep the whole song on your personal profile. A way of being able to customize your personal profile (color, theme, etc.) would help put an emphasis on your theme of being able to customize the music you listen to. It would be cool if when you customize your profile you could decorate it with pictures, posters, and album covers of your favorite band(s).

Keep up the great work! Many thanks!

A friend introduced me to Pandora last week, and I couldn't wait to get home and start playing with it. I now have several stations full of great music! I love this concept. I've noticed that there are others who are asking for the same things that I would like to hear: classical, opera (without being given only Christmas music!), celtic and east coast Canadian. Somehow in my searches (probably trying to find classical and opera) I've ended up with two stations of Christmas music!
There are also lots of folk artists I've tried to find that were not there.
This is a request, not a complaint --this is really great and I love it!
Thanks!
