Welcome Backstage

When we started designing Pandora in January of 2005, we set out to create a service that would do three things:

  • Instantly create on-target stations
  • Provide the best music discovery experience anywhere
  • Reward listeners that want to "lean in" and learn more when they hear a WOW! song

We're finally ready to make good on that third promise.

logo.jpg

Starting tonight, whenever you hear a song you love, just click the song, album, or artist name to learn more. That click will take you "backstage" where you can browse an entire universe that tells the story of more than twenty thousand artists and their collected works.

Sample entire CD's, read about the history of your favorite bands, look at artist photos, build your musical profile, buy albums and tracks from iTunes or Amazon, and get all kinds of great recommendations for songs, albums, and artists you might enjoy.

Find something you like? You can create a new station with just a single click. Have some time on your hands? Just want to browse? Want to settle a bet about how many albums The Cure released in the 80's? Hop over to http://www.pandora.com/backstage and search for your favorite artist or song to get started.

...

Ok, I have a confession to make. We actually started out to do four things... so stay tuned, there's still a lot of great stuff to come. You haven't seen anything yet...

Nice work guys!! What a great way to explore music!! I've been waiting for something like this! And it's getting better and better with this new backstage add-on!

Can't wait for the fourth enhancement! Keep it up!

One suggestion/feature-request: A button to 'move' a song/artist to another station... Sometimes a song comes along on a station not specially designed to play that kind of songs....at moments like that, I hate to press the "I don't like it" button bcs I do but not for this particular station.

Cheers Jean-Paul

Hey guys.

I was told about this site by my mate. It's absolutely fantastic. It's got all the music I like on it. This is the best music website I know, bar none!

So yeah, I want to thank you for the service and the fact that you've opened new doors for me in terms of music artists and music genres. And for that, well done.

Again, thanks very much,
-CuZzA

Posted by: CuZzA at June 16, 2006 7:22 AM

Very nice. The Artist page becomes an excellent way to track which of the artist's albums you've managed to cover to date. Today is major step forward for the site. Congratulations.

Posted by: Mertseger at June 16, 2006 7:29 AM

Thanks so much for this feature! I keep thinking that Pandora is such a clear example of what the net was supposed to spawn, and then you add another perfect feature, and I get blown away again.

Posted by: nursegirl at June 16, 2006 7:37 AM

So I love the new upgrades! One thing tho, ever since the move from "favorites" to "bookmarks" I get runtime errors on every page of Pandora I click through. Could just be the computer I am using - I mostly listen to Pandora at work.

Posted by: Daniel at June 16, 2006 8:17 AM

I can't even imagine the work that went into compiling all that backstage information - it's staggering...
wicked wicked wicked wicked

Posted by: allan at June 16, 2006 8:27 AM

I already thought this was the best site ever. A lot of sites that upgrade themselves end up upgrading themselves into the toilet. This just keeps getting better.

Posted by: thomas dorton at June 16, 2006 8:33 AM

Wow, very nice. This is very good. I'm very impressed. Thank you.

Posted by: Toad at June 16, 2006 8:37 AM

Oh my gods, I may swoon.

Come on, admit it. You all just sit around and plot: "How can we make our devoted following leap out of their seats and bounce aruond shouting 'YES! YES! YESSSS!' today?"

Also, is it me or did you do something to improve the sound quality? Not that it was bad before (OK, some songs were a little quieter than others but so what?) However, the song I'm listening to right now sounds a lot cleaner today. I'm hearing things I did not hear when it played yesterday.

Whew. I need to calm down. I'll just say that if you ever work out a portable Pandora interface PLEASE warn us with gentle hints over a period of a month or so. The shock and joy might be too much for our little hearts.

Enjoy the weekend, you have earned it.

I would like to say what a magnificent archival music library you have the compet. cannot get near. you guys are doing such a great marketing job that even though there is no phone number to contact you I may actually uses my credit card and buy a cd or2

Posted by: fausto at June 16, 2006 9:30 AM

Does Pandora sell shares on the NY stock market? If you keep these kinds of incredible improvements up, you'll soon be growing faster than google!

The new interface with the easy-access thumbs up/down is awesome too. Now all you need to do is start putting lyrics on the backstage site and I can forget about all the other music sites I've ever used.

Better yet, team up with lyriki.com for lyrics and wikipedia for some of the backstage info, and I can forget about half the rest of the internet too!

Posted by: afgncaap at June 16, 2006 10:26 AM

Gotta agree - the new interface is excellent. Keep innovating!

Posted by: DCurt at June 16, 2006 10:30 AM

Still reeling from the Backstage shock, I just noticed the little icons.

OK, you win, I grovel at your feet. I'll have a child just so you all can have my first born.
My eye teeth are in the mail.

I especially like the idea of separating the up and down icons because I HAVE clicked on the wrong one before. I know I can correct it but onr feels a little stoopid when one cuts off a song one likes.

If memory serves, this makes six or possibly seven improvements to this site since February. I look forward to the next set, or leave it as it is. I'll be listening either way.

Many thanks!

Posted by: jay at June 16, 2006 10:40 AM

Just wanted to say that I think that Backstage is pretty terrific. I especially like being able to find out about the "genomes" of music I like, without having to actually set up a station. Though I will admit, there are certainly some surprises here and there in your data base. I'm astonished to learn that Ruby Tuesday has "political lyrics", or that Black Diamond Bay has strings.

It is wonderful website! I wanted to thank you for creating it! I have found out that I actually like many musical styles that I never thought I'd ever listen. The site only gets better and better! I have found the songs I have loved, so now I know who sings them.

Thank you guys!

Congratulations on the great work and many many thanks!

Posted by: Manuel at June 16, 2006 12:09 PM

This site keeps on getting better and better. The only thing that bugs me is when I put a specific song to search for it doens't show up immediately. Sometimes it does later in the playlist and sometimes it doesn't at all. But nonetheless, Pandora has inspired me to further expand my musical knowledge and tastes. Keep at it

great job with backstage, one really neat feature you could add is to view all the songs you have from a specific country and by this feature of course list what country a given artist is from and give an option to "view more artists from this country". Great job

Posted by: cody at June 16, 2006 12:58 PM

of course great work. been a user (and yes it's addictive) since Jan 06. sorry if this comment is a bit out of place-

I was wondering if there's a way to get an automatic playlist in text format (or .xls or .doc) of what I"ve been listening to for a few hours. It would be real nice to have that instead of scrolling all the way to the left on the station and manually writing down the ones I really liked. Just thoughts... maybe I can do this and I just don't know how.

Posted by: Eric at June 16, 2006 12:59 PM

So, I just signed up for pandora since every one else at my office uses it. I have noticed that the artist and album will highlight when you put the cursor over it, but I can't click on it to bring up artist/album info. If there is any way that can be done, that would be swell. Otherwords, thanx for the site.

Kerstin

Posted by: Kerstin at June 16, 2006 1:26 PM

Backstage is a nice idea, but it does not always work properly. For example try to find Zorn in the artist search. John Zorn will show up. If you click on that name you will see Zorn's discography, name and ... the bio of Jamie Saft. This bio has link to John Zorn again. If you follow that link you will end up on Naked City entry, but with the bio of John Zorn. Seems like the DB IDs were somehow messed up when the data was imported from AMG. Also, since the Backstage data is just a copy from AMG, it would be great to see all info including full discography, credits, etc or at least have the link to the page of that artist at AMG.

PS Unrelated question: Is there a chance to get more artists? For example Otomo Yoshihide has plenty of records both in Japan and in the US, but his name is totally unknown to the system. I'm sure though that Scott Rosenberg is familiar with that name.

Thanks,
Peter

I've been enjoying your site for the last 4 months or so now...picked up on some great new stuff like the Great Lake Swimmers, Celso Fonseca and lots of reggae sounds I wasn't familiar with.

Technically, everything's great except for the 'Minimize' button- it's just an 'Reset' button, basically- which is tricky, because clicking on it I thought would simply minimize the screen and not turn off and reset the player...

The backstage upgrade is especially proper...cheers

The only thing I could ask for from Pandora is a higher-quality stream. 192 or 256 kbps perhaps? Maybe this would be a good feature to differentiate subscribers versus everybody else.

Excellent improvements!

I have noticed that certain albums only offer a couple of selections. For example, "pushing the salmanilla envelope" by Jimmies Chicken Shack is constantly giving me the same three songs and nothing more. I have tried making other stations under other song titles off of that album and still get the same 3. What about the other 8?

Same thing with these albums..

Blind Melon "Soup"
Queensryche "operation mindcrime"
The Church "Uninvited like the clouds"

Pretty much all albums by "the church" have been only slightly represented.

"Hail Social" by Hail Social is an excellent album but I always just get 4 of the 9 tunes on that album.

When I type in "David Bowie", I should get more of his stuff from the 70's and 80's. Im getting mostly stuff off his newer albums. This is true with a lot of artists whos career spans decades.

Please bring back the "printable list" feature because its much easier to scroll through your selections.

Also, I second the opinion posted earlier about a complete discography being available when clicking on a band.

And lastly, I think a wonderful feature would be to give the year of the release nxt to each album name or song name that appears on the playlist. I think that would be a very neat feature.

I know Im complaining but dont get me wrong, I love this site and Im on it all day.

I simply love the new thumbs up/down feature. Great work. Pandora's my homepage. ^_^

You can find plenty of surprises if you simply click "why did you play this song" often enough.

This song by Britney Spears features a male vocal:

http://www.pandora.com/music/song/fb7d42bc3b0057d2

Some rather interesting things pass for upbeat lyrics:

http://www.pandora.com/music/song/e7716f05d8f06ccb

A sample of the lyrics: "If you don't like my attitude, then you can F off." "New York is not for little pussies who scream."

That might seem upbeat to some, especially if you're used to downbeat lyrics and find yourself thinking "at least Madonna seems to be happy," but to really see upbeat lyrics in action, you need to listen to "Way of the World" by Jump5.

"I'm lost in you. I've got to be. Spinning and flashing and dashing... With every turn I'm taking. It's heaven in the making. The moments race right past me. Sometimes I burst out laughting. It's the way of the world of you and me. It's every wish I ever made or ever thought I might. All I know is I love the way I feel."

I'm also surprised by which songs have "political lyrics," particularly because many of them are songs which I believe have "upbeat lyrics," but I've never seen "upbeat lyrics" mentioned for them. This song, "Bring It All Back" by S Club 7, for example:

http://www.pandora.com/music/song/7be31b4993c8cec0

A sample of its lyrics: "Don't stop. Never give up. Hold your head high and reach the top. Let the world see what you have got. Bring it all back to you." Perhaps motivational, but I fail to see how a song which fails to express a political opinion can be said to have political lyrics.

Then there's Mustache T.V. by Atom & His Package:

http://www.pandora.com/music/song/9e0972a6f5f94dd4

I'm not sure how a song about throwing away your antidepressants because you no longer need them failed to get the upbeat lyrics stamp. The only thing offensive in the song is the F word, its otherwise very positive and upbeat. You have to look at the context in which he says "you're a god-****ed genius and a mother****ing idiot." The very next line is "but I can never stay mad because I'm forever in your stupid debt." It's clearly a matter of being in the habit of using extreme language whenever emotional, but it's a very positive emotion in this song.

I've sent email about the first two before, but they're yet uncorrected. I haven't yet said anything about the others and many more because it basically comes down to "What is Pandora's defition of upbeat lyrics?" and I don't know.

Do we define upbeat lyrics as lyrics that express a positive outlook on life? Do we include lyrics that express a positive future but a negative present? What about lyrics that express happiness with something via critisism of everything else? Are upbeat lyrics any lyrics which merely aren't downbeat? I know what I think upbeat lyrics are, and I'm sure everyone else knows what they think upbeat lyrics are, but if the entire Genome isn't based on the same definition then it means less when two songs share the "upbeat lyrics" attribute and they you're playing a song which may not be so related after all.

It's hard to say that anything is wrong without knowing the definitions that The Music Genome Project uses. Without seeing the complete data, it's also impossible to say what is missing.

Lyrics are perhaps one area where it may be beneficial to apply listener feedback to the song selection. When I'm in a hardcore listening mood, I wouldn't mind if a box poped up to ask "do you believe this song has upbeat lyrics?" Including user feedback in song selection should of course be optional for the listener, but for lyrics in particular, I believe it may do more good than bad, provided when asked "does this song have upbeat lyrics" the listener is also presented with a clear defition of what upbeat lyrics are, so that everyone is applying the same metric.

It often seems Pandora is more interested in romantic lyrics than upbeat lyrics. I unfortunately don't have a good example, except to metion "What Dreams are Made Of" by Hilary Duff.

http://www.pandora.com/music/song/f41b459a663af362

It also has romantic lyrics. Some romantic lyrics are upbeat, but most are not. They're usually either "I love you, I love you, I love you" or "why do I love someone who sucks so much?" It's lyrics such as "I could almost kiss the stars for shining so bright" that I want to hear.

However, it seems that if a song is even slightly romantic, and I mean very slightly, it gets the "romantic lyrics" stamp.

Spinnin' Around by Jump5:
http://www.pandora.com/music/song/bd5de67f9fb23dfe

Here we have a song that in all likelyhood, like every Jump5 song, is secretly about God. This song's romantic lyrics consist entirely of "make it last, take it slow" and "I'll keep my heart, my eyes on You" and yes, the lyric site I pulled the lyrics from capitalized "you" and we all know what that means. Nothing else in the song is even remotely romantic, so I don't understand why it is marked as having romantic lyrics.

I'm happy that the Genome missed (either intentionally or accidentally) the religious nature of Jump5's lyrics. I don't particularly like religious lyrics, I simply like Jump5 because the religious aspect of most of Jump5's lyrics is so subtle that if you're not paying close attention you won't even notice it. Being so subtle, it shouldn't be included, unless it can be included as "subtle religious lyrics" or something of that sort. The upbeat lyrics, however, are so obvious... Vertigo may not be something that adults enjoy, but kids intentionally make themselves dizzy all the time. It's a very happy and fun song.

"Upbeat lyrics" vs. "romantic lyrics" is a good example of what I was talking about the other day; how it is difficult to hear a particular attribute without hearing the songs which it is most prevalant in. Most songs with upbeat lyrics are songs with romantic lyrics, but most songs with romantic lyrics do not have upbeat lyrics. It isn't too difficult to create a station with a fair bias towards upbeat lyrics, but when I start thumbing down those romantic lyrics, my favorite songs disappear because many of them also have romantic lyrics (according to Pandora). There aren't enough songs with upbeat lyrics to thumb up to make Pandora realize that my love for upbeat lyrics outweighs my hate for romantic lyrics.

Here's an idea... Does the algorithm place a limit on how much someone can like a particular attribute? For example, it might limit everything to a number between -1 and 1, so that after I've surely pushed each coefficient to its limit, it thinks that "+1 * upbeat lyrics + -1 * romantic lyrics + -1 * some other attribute I only care for in songs with upbeat lyrics" equals a song that I don't like. While it seems logical to limit them, those numbers really have to be allowed to go as far as feedback indicates they should. Upbeat lyrics really are an attribute that can make me like a song despite many other things being wrong with it. Take "Penpals" by Sloan for example. I nearly thumbed it down as quickly as I thumb down every Sloan song until I noticed just before clicking the button that the lyrics were totally unlike other Sloan lyrics. By the end of the song I was quite willing to forgive everything else that I didn't like about it.

On the plus side, "What Dreams Are Made Of" seems to be a particularly awesome station tonight. "Electronica influences, disco influences, danceable grooves, groove based composition, mild rhythmic syncopation" yes! It seems to also be stuck on minor key tonality, but whatever...

I'm starving myself listening to it. I'm afraid to go and eat. I know there's no reason why it should be different when I return, but Pandora seems to go through phases and I hate to miss the good ones because they are so bloody awesome! I fear it may not be the same tomorrow.

...or 30 minutes later, despite no feedback whatsoever on the station. Those first 20 songs were awesome. I just wish Pandora would match songs so well all of the time, or at least that giving feedback would cause it to match songs better. Pandora is now saying the same things when I click "why did you play this song," but whatever the magic element was, it's forgotten and is now simply playing ordinary songs from the 80's again. At least I can go eat now. Maybe I will be similarly blessed tomorrow.

Hi Peter,

You got us -- with over 20,000 artists and hundreds of thousands of song and album page, there are linkages and connections that aren't perfect. The Zorn bio is one of those mistakes. I'll se what we can do to get it corrected.

I am a true pandora fanatic - so far your site has helped me discover over 20 artists that I would otherwise have never known about. Truly, what you people are doing is just nothing short of brilliance.

I think you should try to create a code so, when people are using MSN Messenger, it can take advantage of the "what I'm listening to" command. Think of it, you could display messages on hundreds of thousands of MSN Messengers that say, "I'm listening to (artist and song) on Pandora.com!" Talk about free advertising ;)

Fantastic! Almost the coolest website I ever seen!

I love Pandora and thanks for you guys, stunning job!!!

Hi

Your website featured in todays 'Daily Telegraph'
So glad I found it. Know its going to provide me with hours of entertainment.

Read your article on Bill Haley and his Comets and found it to be the most honest and well written that I have read so far. Being one of those lucky enough to be in at the beginning of Rock 'n' Roll I can never understand why he has not been given the credit he deserves

Definitely the Father of Rock 'n' Roll and still greatly loved by us old timers

Katarra B.

You really get into this. Just about wrote
a book up there.

" It's hard to say that anything is wrong without knowing the definitions that The Music Genome Project uses. Without seeing the complete data, it's also impossible to say what is missing."

I believe you are refering to lyrics above.
I asked Pandora about including the lyrics
of a given song somewhere on the screen as
the song was playing. That would be plenty
for me. They said that there were legal
problems and it wouldn't happen.

The most upbeat lyrics I've heard recently:

Piece of it all (by Jann Arden)

Some of the saddest:

Calling God (by Jann Arden)

You're obviously a serious listener.

I love your site i vist it every day. No to seem like a critic or a picky person but since i'm so honest i'll say that song rating system sucks. If you guys have ever been on yahoo's radio you see that there rating system is more effective. Most of the songs you play are what i like because of the ways you make the station but there are some that aren't good enough to give a thumbs up but not that bad to give thumbs down. On yahoo this particular is a solid 3. I suggest you make this minor ajustment and i'm sure you'll get more subscibers. Great site though. Good Job.

Posted by: emerald at June 17, 2006 8:23 PM

Tom-CTO One way you could make Pandora more visible is to write a plug-in for IChat and the other IM programs similar to the one that enables you to set your status as "Current Song in ITunes" Whatever you are listening to shows up as your online status message. "Current Song IN PANDORA" would be awesome. The people at http://yreuxsoftware.com/iChartwork.html have a great plug-in for Mac that changes your avatar in real time to the album cover of the song you are listening to.

Pandora rocks!

Just wanted to say thanks for a great site!! I work nightshift from 8pm to 8am 7 days a week and without this site feeding my brain with great music I could never handle it. You have stopped me going AWOL on many occasions. Don't ever stop!! Pandora RULZ!!

If I can make a request, it would be interesting if we could search new songs from instruments.
In fact, I would like to listen harmonica but I don't know any people or music names and it seems very hard to find them without name.
I think it could be an useful option.

Dear Pandora people

You guys have developed the most amazing thing that's happened to online music. And I thank you for helping me while the hours away at work.

I haven't stopped telling everyone about it from the first day Pandora was recommended to me by a friend. Oh yeah, I've also stopped listening to other online radio stations :-P

Keep up the wonderful work that you guys are doing at Pandora and I'll keep the feedback n suggestions coming in future.

X.

Posted by: cosmicsultana at June 18, 2006 8:29 PM

I'm enjoying the site. A friend of a friend told me about it at a party, so this site is definitely spreading by word of mouth.

The cool about Pandora is that it's helping me break out of my musical rut. There's a lot of cool music on the edge of my favorite genre, electronic industrial. I've been hearing some interesting techno, trance, house, breakbeat, jungle, electro, and downtempo. The artists and labels would love to hear the fact that I've actually been purchasing CDs of these newly found artists so I can hear this music in my car. Yeah, there are lot of misses; but, there are enough diamonds in the rough to keep me listening. It would cool if I could somehow listen to and control my station from a car radio.

The only problem I have with the site is that it seems to hog (or possibly leak) a lot of memory and over time I get a lot of Flash script warnings. It doesn't seem to matter what browser I'm using (Safari, Firefox for OS X and XP). Eventually the UI becomes very sluggish.

i hope you guys dont stop with it!

I wanted to give my thanks for all you guys do. I love the new updates to the site. I just found it recently, and I've visited almost every day since then to listen to music while I browse the web. I told all my friends and family already! GREAT GREAT GREAT idea!

Posted by: Neil Martin at June 19, 2006 9:25 AM

Thank you for my online "music appreciation" class! I love hearing new stuff from people I never would have heard of, and by singers I already like. This is like having the music collection of all of my friends right here in front of me! This is now what gets me through the workday :)

I have one request (I feel bad making it, with all of the great stuff you've already provided). Is there any way to have the song title appear in the title bar of the radio player window? It would be great if I could see the name and artist of the song without having to maximize the screen, especially if the boss is hanging over my shoulder, as is often the case.

Thanks, thanks, and more thanks!

Posted by: Adaure at June 19, 2006 9:37 AM

I'm happy we have you, but I feel like there are some things you do half assed. Most channels for things that are beyond the mainstream are pretty weak. you have an opportunity to really HOOK an unrepresented audience! But i can't sit down and listen to any of the stations of bands that I LIKE. BBut ofcourse a matchbox 20 station sounds like a matchbox 20 station. I like wierd music like theresidents and stuff. You have it all in yoursystem but the stations suck. I dont mind mixing a little pop music in with my wierd music, but there is some underlying thing that you are missing here.

AND WHY USE ALL MUSIC GUID FOR BACKSTAGE???? ALLMUSIC IS FULL OF FALACIOUS INFORMATION.

A big thank you to everyone connected with Pandora.

I have indeed discovered new artists that I would maybe not have done had I not stumbled upon this site.

The only draw back is that Pandora is setting me back quite a few bob buying CD's!!

Cheers again.

Posted by: Chris Roberts at June 19, 2006 6:36 PM

Ditto to Kevin Archibald's comment about the slowness and flash problems. And I also second Tommy's comment about the trouble with less mainstream stations.

Posted by: ObiWanKeenobi at June 20, 2006 8:06 AM

Thank you for adding the "Backstage" feature.

Pandora is easily my favorite streaming media. For the last few years, I had been worried that my musical tastes were growing stale, and that I was missing out on new music that might appeal to me. Since I signed up with Pandora, I've learned about other artists whose albums I could add to my collection, as well as new releases by my favorite bands that I wouldn't have been made aware of, otherwise. Thanks for all that you do.

Posted by: Bojan at June 21, 2006 11:13 AM

Incredible idea.

One suggestion though, would it be possible to select the specific musical elements to explore? I love how the music connects by it, but Pandora does occasionally misunderstands what I like about a particular song.

If I could tell pandora that I specifically like "minor key tonality" or "tight bass" I'm sure we could get along a little better.

Just an idea.

Posted by: Opticon77 at June 21, 2006 11:39 AM

I'm In Lovee... With Pandora :D
But please, don't go do things like going to the stock market! Shareholders are killing creativity in ANY way!! Be wise pease. But i'm not realy afraid, looking at the wise ideas and creations ou people have made(Y)

Hi. I just found Pandora - wonderful. Thank you very much. (why is there no charge for this?)

Posted by: Colene at June 21, 2006 1:02 PM

Love the new stuff, keep up the good job.

A suggestion: I use the Bookmarked Songs feature to keep record of bands I like and I've never heard about, so I can check them out later. But it often happens to me that after some time I can't remember well what did I like about a patricular song. So, I thought it would be nice if I could add a personal comment or description of the songs on my profile.

You guys rock and roll and country. Got one little problem. It seems to have slowed down between songs for some reason. Could it be my puter or is it just so many people know about this site now?

Posted by: Paul Gibat at June 21, 2006 1:48 PM

Pandora is one of the greatest projects in the music history. Thanks for the great effort.

I also have a suggestion. I think there must be a feedback type like this:
"I like this song but this song mustn't play in this station"
I may be hard to process this feedback unless user doesn't specify which station this song must belong to. Anyway, I know you can do it :)

Best Regards

I just found your station when I was searching for free internet radio to listen to in my lab and dorm room. I am very grateful for the site and appreciate the fact that people are allowed to listen to quality music and learn new songs without having to pay. Most stations make you pay for listening to the radio music by playing ads every few minutes. This is not very attractive when all you want is to listen to music. Students don't have much income and cannot afford to pay for most luxuries, like ad-free radio. I really appreciate your generosity and ingenuity. I am telling everyone I know about your site and hope that after I graduate I will be able to support your good work!

Thanks a lot!

Since 1/006 I have requested several artists that y'all didn't recognize, but later you'd find them and play them for me, and I've gotta say, hooray! Hooray! Hooray!

Even so I do ask for yet still more. You tend to play about 5 songs per artist-maybe this is by design, but I suspect you are busy gathering a wider variety of songs as well as artists, even as I write this. Oh,boy! ! I can hardly wait...

I can't put into words what Pandora has created for Jazz lovers. Dallas is not a Jazz city so you see we're isolated from old and new stuff. The only thing I have to say. No man can withstand the elements in which prevails against his heart to the extent that he knows nothing.
Pandora has created new life for the Jazz constituents.

Posted by: Kikie at June 23, 2006 5:32 AM

A great idea, a very professional and complex set of musical criteria with impressive sorting results. The final results look like using artificial intelligence in categorizing music. I was so impressed I instantly started to inform all my 'musical' friends about your project.
I can finally listen to new (for me) music that seems to be exactly what I like. I was stuck to my old playlist for a few years, never being able to expand it ...
I have but one comment about the player interface that looks kind of 'out of fashion' and rough, although it is very logical, organized and user friendly. I would agree to contribute freely with a new skin style that would bring a more stylish look to this wonderful product (I am a graphic designer, and a pretty appreciated one too.. :)). Contact me if interested..
Cheers

Posted by: yvonne at June 23, 2006 6:14 AM

love this stuff! everyone i introduce to it, loves this stuff! it's just great stuff!

one suggestion:
don't play the "thumbs up" songs so often. i can be listening to a radio station for a couple hours, and the same song(s) will play 2-3 times in that span. but, the only option to get it not to play so much is for it not to play for a month? that's a bit extreme.

other than this, everything is balls, yo!

Posted by: nathan at June 23, 2006 7:02 AM

Pandora is awesome. Just one feature is missing...It so that you can forward the song and listen to the track in the middle. Some intro's of songs are really (yawn)...Anyway, keep up the good work.

Posted by: Leonard at June 23, 2006 1:26 PM

I reccomend the site to all my college friends.

I have an idea for a good improvement. How about occasionally requesting songs (or albums) by the artist that inspired me to create the station. This would save me from switching stations and help refine the station developing process.

Thanks for the time

Posted by: Bryan at June 23, 2006 2:28 PM

I keep telling folks about this site and they keep saying "Thank you!" - so first of all, let me please pass these thanks along to the Pandora team!

Secondly, I have got to second what someone said up-thread, about having a feature where you can move a song or songs from a less-appropriate station to a more appropriate one.

Keep up the good work, Pandora!

Actually, I suspect that you guys are out there reading my mind. The programming is what I want to hear about 95% of the time.

You've got such a variety of music available. I've programmed K D Lang, Chris Botti, Lou Reed, Count Basie, Prince, Ben Taylor, Barry White, Duran Duran....in other words, all over the map.

Our computers at work are set so that we can't pick up any streaming audio. Drat. It would sure make the day go by more pleasantly.

I have to thank my daughter for telling me about Pandora. I've since become a devoted listener. We got home from dinner about seven, discovered that even with satellite and cable there was nothing on tv I wanted to watch, so I've been here for a little over three hours happily listening to my Annie Lennox station while I've been in chat rooms or playing games while my wife is making a quilt.

Live long and prosper, and may God bless.

First: You guys are simply "Truly Masterminds." You all were already the best, but now you have turned the best into Better. I no longer listen to the radio anymore, no one trying to sell me anything.

Second: A request/suggestion- could you add the video to selected songs, and allow song swapping between radio stations.

I have a small suggestion for you...i'd like to see the videos for all the songs that the radio is playing...

Posted by: cory at June 26, 2006 11:15 PM

How about a point-scale (1 to 5?) rating instead of just a binary 'like it' / 'don't like it'? I suspect this request has come up before.

BTW, I really like the speed at which you make changes.

Posted by: Ram at June 27, 2006 1:27 AM

You may have hundreds of thousands of songs on your database, but I've noticed that not all of those songs are actually "genomed". Many albums, for example "Everything you Need" by Slightly Stoopid, are only slightly represented; only tracks 1 and 11 actually HAVE MUSICAL INFORMATION, while the other tracks, while enterable in the database and in creating a station, DON'T HAVE ANY GENOME INFORMATION ATTACHED. So what happens when I input "Runnin' With A Gun", which isn't genomed? I honestly don't know, but this seriously undermines Pandora. Is it that you just don't have the time to put textual genome information for all songs on the Backstage page, so you only choose a few highlights, or do only TWO out of FOURTEEN songs actually have individual genome information?

Posted by: arnold at June 27, 2006 6:40 AM

I have to voice dissent on the idea of moving songs from one station to another. In my opinion there are far more pressing improvements needed. Even though it might be heartbreaking to thumbs-down a song that you like but doesn't belong, the fact is that Pandora played a song that didn't belong. Lets work on fixing the problem, not making dealing with it less uncomfortable.

Thanks.

I just wanted to say that this site ROCKS! The sound quality is excellent and you play a lot of music that I like or am begining to like. The only suggestions I can think of is to try and do a little more with the home page. Give it a little character. Keep Jammin!

I'm blown away what I could do after a couple of practice hours. Pandora could become an addiction for me...

EXCEPT... I don't yet know if I can listen to my stations while on my online forum. Pandora goes off when I click to another website. Can somebody please email me and/or click over to my forum & tell me whether it's possible to listen to my Pandora stations like I do with streaming music? Then I will just need Apple to male me a jacket which is a computer and I'd live in it. LOL

Hey arnold, thanks for bringing up that point in the proper thread. I think the fact that I put my June 20 comment on it in the "...more of Pandora's Music Analysts..." thread made it destined to oversight. And thanks again to Pandora for adding Backstage. When I noticed that the songs that actually have "features" are, when applicable, the singles from the album, I realized that Pandora is meant more for the casual top 40 listener looking for underground stuff than the underground listener looking for other great under-discovered bands. I think Pandora thought people will type Ashley Simpson in and we'll be able to feed them great undiscovered female led rock bands, not that fans of those underground bands will type them in and get Ashley Simpson. Who needs help discovering the top 40?

Sorry, I'm a hopeless cynic, but love what Pandora is trying to do and hope that you'll succeed

I don't know if this is the right place to mention this but Pandora is seriously flawed.

I really like the premise, that you are trying to introduce music with similiar qualities to analyze what attracts people to certain music but while you relate music in some complex ways you seem to completely forget the basics....

I'm sure there is a connection between something like Il Divo (The group) and "Ruby Jean and Billie Lee" by Seals and Crofts but I Just don't see it, and after about the 50th (literally) thumbs down on the channel you would think Pandora would try to go back to WHAT I STARTED WITH (Il Divo) and try again instead of giving me country and pop music (It actually tried to have me listen to that guy who was married to Jessica Simpson...as if his vocal talents even match up to a 1/10th of Il Divo or any other real singers for that matter).

I think what would help is to allow us to choose certain things that we like about the music, for instance the voice type (At the very basic male or female). So far I have only had one channel come out as something even close to what I was looking for (A country channel based with country love songs). Any classical station I even try to begin sends me on a crazy path and good luck getting a foreign language station (Does pandora not get that after I send a thumbs down to 60 english songs and give a thumbs up to ONLY foreign language songs that maybe, just maybe, I don't want english?)

I think the stations need to start slower and instead of after the first song sending you off on some crazy random journey based on tiny little aspects of songs it needs to start with actually similiar music to establish if you like the music merely because it has "Major key tonality" or because of a combination of things.

Posted by: Brian at June 29, 2006 10:57 PM

Do you think a choice of "This song's ok" would work well? Just a suggestion.

Posted by: HV at June 30, 2006 8:29 AM

Hey Brian, I feel your pain. You should check out the May 17 blog post on "Care and Feeding of your Stations" to get an in depth look at how Pandora chooses songs for you. I thought the same thing, but apparently Pandora is unable to cross reference what you've input. So instead of compairing Il Divo and "Ruby Jean and Billie Lee" looking for shared similarities. It treats them as separate inputs. It will play a song similar to Il Divo, them two like Rudy Jean and so on. Frustrating I know, but I'm sure they're working on a way to intergate this kind of input, right? Anyone?

Posted by: ObiWanKeenobi at June 30, 2006 8:40 AM

Please tell me how to keep my Pandora radio stations playing when I am online at other sites. I use Mozilla Firefox.

Right now if I want to google or post on forums, I can't listen to Pandora. Is there something I need to change about my browser, or does Pandora only work when I am no the page supporting my music?

The artist catalogues are a bit thin. They should have all the artists work available.

On the other hand they do have some wonderfully obscure stuff like Matching Mole & Happy The Man (one one CD though)

The other problem I have encountered is the buffereing stream can be disrupted if your computer is doing too many tasks.

I have fallen in love with this site. You have turned me on to so many songs and artists that I had never even heard of before. I tell all of my friends about this site, because even though other sites like Yahoo create products like Launchcast to try and tailor songs to listener's tastes, this site is way more dead-on with its reccomendations. Keep up the good work, you've got one more devoted listener.

Posted by: David at July 1, 2006 5:59 PM

Your music selection process has repeatedly failed to distinguish folk music from country & western music. Granted, there are performers, mostly women, who can and do sing both kinds (Lucy Kaplansky is one) but they usually don't mix folk songs with C&W on the same album.

Wasn't able to read every prior posting, so not sure if anyone else had this suggestion - it would be helpful if the running time of a song was listed on the song profile. When it comes to 70s progressive rock, songs can be quite lengthy. When I get one I don't like, with the limited ability to fast forward past it, I would like to see how long I have until the next song.
All in all, a very enjoyable experience.

this website is one of the most progressive if not attentive to the listeners that i have run across. i have discovered that i like more of a variety from multipal genres than i previously thought possible. some are not so well but those same artists or groups do perform some amazing music. i am shocked at what i may enjoy and what i may discover along the way. i make it a point to introduce as many people as possible to this website. i have made some very happy listeners to the many friends that i have on the web. i only wish that this website will become the superior media in audio entertainment. i will happily spread the word to the masses as i wander through this wild untamed cyberworld. i must diligently wish that the people at the project keep up the fine work that would otherwise would never have been initiated otherwise. the detail in categorizing each and every song by specific and numerous characteristics that make up a songs signatures are so far advanced of simple genre selections. i enjoy this site and will be a listener for life.

The best part is, you guys have not only mainstream, but also indie and even other languages! I was so shocked that you recognized Gackt and Utada Hikaru that I had to smack myself to see if I was awake (still have bruises to prove it).

In other words, you guys are wonderful. If you have a section where we can donate money or time to, I would be happy to contribute to your amazing idea.

Great, impressive , amazing.

As one other user put it "this is all i demand from web" - i like the idea of adding lyrics as well. The background info completes the package. An Addition to have a link to the artists homepage / and Concerts would fit nicely as wel. Pandora could become a one-stop-source for music and information on the web.

Go on maties!

I discoverd all what I needed about American and European English language music.

I want to beg you for somethying! PLEASE if you have finances and energy do include in your list ITALIAN music.

The Italian Divas - Mina, Milva, Marcella Bella, Ornella Vanoni, Anna Oxa and Alice are outstanding. I also like very much Fausto Leali and Zucchero.

For the moment you only have Eros Ramazotti and he sings in Spanish.

You will have a great admiration from European fans if you include in your archives as well at least the first ten songs of the Eurovision competition or San Remo festival.

With real admiration yours

Wow, seriously. This is the coolest thing to happen, ever. I am always looking for new music, and it's hard to find with ClearChannel dominated radio. I'd say about 85-90% of the songs on my playlists get thumbs up! And this has given me something great and more productive than random games to do during the 9-5 at work!

I found out about you guys just recently and have since told just about everyone I know, inlcuding my parents who love it.

I think you guys, and i odn't make claims like this lightly, have created the best website since skype. An exceptional idea which has been brilliantly executed.

Genuinely, thank you.

Posted by: menes at July 22, 2006 4:01 AM

The product is brilliant, and your move to partner with SqueezeBox even more so. Rock on!

How 'bout a slider for "loose" vs "strict" matches?

I was also very pleased to see that you chose not to use "clean" versions of songs. I don't need the religious right censoring my music listening experience to please their personal SkyWizard.

Would also like to see a list of definitions for all the descriptions you use. So I can learn what you mean by "extensive vamping".

Also, what's to keep a competitor from running a script to just vacuum the classifications you've spent a lot of time applying?

The bookmark feature is crucial too, because I'll likely buy the full albums from some of the artists you dish up for me.

You folks are the Sh#*!!! I love hearing both songs that I've never heard before, and songs i love, but forgot about 'cuz it's been sooo long. I do agree with there being an option to move a song to another station if I like it but it might not fit with the station that is playing.
Also, how can I support you folks so you can keep on doing what you're doing? I mean, I have no problem with the ads, but I also would like to send you the sign-up cash. However, I don't want to deprive you of the revenue from the ads. You know, kind of NPRish.

Incredible. I can't imagine the time that had go into creating this...I have pretty eclectic music taste (at least on the surface) and this does a great job at finding the music i like.

Posted by: tyson at July 26, 2006 11:25 PM

I like it - mostly, but it seems to me the music has a bias for the newest releases, and my music tastes all lean towards the oldies.

Posted by: Sally at July 27, 2006 12:18 PM

I like it mostly but here's my beef. I don't understand how when I have a "radio" list for women singers, Pandora keeps playing men singers. That's kind of an elemental choice of music tastes, isn't it? And on my wishes for acoustic, folk, oldies and the like, Pandora keeps trying to throw in some twangy country. Yuck. But as I said, I mostly like it.

hey pandora..maybe you should look into other ways of finding music that is attractive to people. Right now, everything i listen to on a certain radio station sounds exactly the same...iwant to hear something new and original not a rip off of the band name i entered.

I have added a few artists and now I hear what I like with a few suprises thrown in. Thanks again and again and again!!!!!

hey
this site is excellent the amount of music ive been exposed to that i otherwise would never have is mind blowing.... thanks alot!

i do have a suggestion though. maybe if there was a seperate bit where we could see the different categories that you use to associate the songs(like major or minor tonalities and electric or acoustic guitars etc) and could enter in what we want rather then having to compare it to a band we already know. This way we could listen to stuff that was TOTALLY new to us

Amazing. Ever since I signed up Pandora has never played music I don't like. with all the improvements it has made since I joined (which wasn't that long ago) You really should consider a stand-alone software based version of pandora (I know you can compile flash EXEs for windows to start with, don't know how to do it thoughg but you guys probably will).

Posted by: Olga at August 26, 2006 10:52 PM

This site is really great. I just have one suggestion: Pandora should have a way to search through genres of music. For example, I have just recently gotten into techno, but I don't know many artists, this could make it hard for Pandora to find the right kind of music I want to be listening to.

But, remember this is probably the best music site out there. Everything my playlists have given me have been a thumbs up, and it has gotten me into diffent types of music and artists. Pandora is truely amazing.

I love this SO much. My own personal radio stations. I have created one for every mood... Everything from soft indie, to grinding electronica, to postcore punk, to music I can be "footloose in my velcro shoes" to. I even have a "just for work listening" station. Oh god, I'm discovering hundreds of new bands everyday. Thank you so much. It's like you answered all the people who are passionate about music's prayers!

Only one request though.... WHAT ABOUT IN THE CAR?????? I would be more than happy to spend a pretty penny for a device that could be installed into my car. Screw Ipods, if you can have more music than you can buy in the stores anyway. Plus it's an endless shuffle. You know what's on your Ipod. With Pandora, I never know what it's going to throw at me next.

Anyway, you should seriously think about it.
For now, I'll just keep spreading the word to help keep new and undiscovered bands flowing through the music scene.

You guys rock my socks, even though you're missing Half Man, Half Biscuit, you do have my newest favourite: Pink Mountaintops. Rock on.

If you guys need cash, don't be afraid to put up a donate page (rather than more ads). I'd be happy to chuck a few bucks your way. You guys do great work.

Amazing!!!!!!
Thank you sooo much. Finally someone out there gets it and has found away to cater to individual taste without pushing certain types of music. Tastefull, masterful, wonderful. And on top of all this-it is so obvious that you CARE about MUSIC not just the almighty $.
Thanks again-

I've even done a speech on Pandora for a college project. and I'm currently doing a big research project on Heavy Metal music and I plan on using Pandora in my project to let them listen to how different each genre sounds, I wouldn't be able to stream music like that without Pandora. Cheers from Connecticut, USA.

After all these years, I finally found someone who listens to me... a few months ago, I searched for an artist not found in the Project, searched for him again tonight and found volumes of his music. With a little effort, we can make Pandora ours. And now I don't have to listen to the tripe on broadcast radio anymore. It's the little things, y'know?

Posted by: Scot at October 23, 2006 4:42 PM

Hiya dudes and dudettes :-)

Trying to find a way to make this mail "memorable" to you so it doesn't get lost within the incredible pile of incoming love-hate mail :-))))

*My main gripe is that there must be literally thousands of users out there who like me have created their stations. It would be great to be able to browse them, no?
*What about some kind of MySpace embed function or link? Matter of fact a link should be one of your highest priorities. People in forums would def. put it in their sigs...
*Oh yeah...why can't I run a blog on my own radio???
*If I give a thumbs-down to a song in a playlist, the app should ask me if I want to trash the song or the artist alltogether (I still appreciate the possibility of moving a song elsewhere, thx!!!)
*Oh yeah - the backstage "clickie" doesn't work for me (Mac OSx, Safari or Mozilla FFX)...

All for now... will eventually be back for more :-)))

I have an idea that I think if you incorporated would really be wild. Imagine if you could take your radio station that you made here and embed it on a site like myspace.com. It would be wild to have your radio station on your profile. People would be able to hear the station you made, be exposed to the music you like, as well as find out about pandora. I know its possible and would be pretty amazing.

Your search engine was unable to find any of my music. I believe it is available on iTunes and other digital distribution outlets as well as some internet-based radio stations. What is the procedure for an artist to submit their music to your website? Is there a limit as to what can and what can not be included in your library of music? What are the ctiteria to qualify for your acceptance? Thanks, Les Blachut www.lesblachut.com

there is nothing I can say that has not been previously stated above. I literally stumbled onto this site by accident, but it is by far the most ingenious, informative and user friendly site I have ever used. For someone that spends $100 on CDs monthly its a treat to not have to play craps everytime I want to try something new. I have not stopped talking about this site for three days to whomever will listen...my wife acutally told me to 'shut it already, its not the reinventing of the wheel'. I couldn't disagree more, I have no doubt someday soon you will be mentioned with the likes of google or YouTube. Thankyou, thank you
