Pandora Server Upgrade - 7PM, Friday June 9th
Now that our servers are all settled into their new home, we're ready for phase two of our capacity expansion project.
Tonight at 7PM Pacific Time, we'll be expanding our radio database cluster. This will give us lots of headroom for future growth and is the output of months of work and planning by the Pandora engineering team.
Like the datacenter move, this is a delicate process and requires that we put our system into "read only" mode while we do our work. Starting at 7PM, you will be able to listen to your existing stations, but you'll not be able to create new stations, give us feedback on existing stations, or edit your account in any way. The system will be in this state for quite a long time -- we estimate that it could be 12-15 hours before the new system is entirely populated and up, running, and able to take your station creation requests again. We estimate that the system will be back to normal at noon pacific time on Saturday June 10th.
We don't like having to put the system into "read only" mode at all; it's something that we always endeavor to avoid. Sadly there's a small set of operations that simply require it. Last month's datacenter move and tonight's changes unfortunately fall into this category. Thanks in advance for your patience. While Pandora will stay the same on the surface for the time being, this change sets us up to scale to a much larger listener base and to bring more and more features online in the coming months.
Update 6AM, 6/10: Things are going according to plan and we're making great progress. Thanks again for your patience.
Update 9AM, 6/10: The upgrade is complete and we've turned the new system on. We'll be keeping a very close eye on things throughout the coming days. Everything went as planned with one caveat: some of you that created a station and later deleted the station may see the deleted station show back up in your stations list. This will only happen if someone had "shared" your station before you deleted it. We're working on a fix to clean that up.
A tiny little surprise: There is one little feature in this release that a lot of folks have been asking about. Each song "slide" now shows the name of the album in addition to the name of the artist and song. Enjoy!

Just wanted to suggest a group that you should add to your project--Seabound. A great group from Germany.
Also wanted to let you know that I LOVE pandora.com and have become totally addicted.
All the best,
Erica

I had heard that you guys use Internap for some of your bandwidth. I've been a happy Internap customer for years and was wondering if that was true? IF so, are you in their datacenter or do you just use their performance IP? Do you use their Flow Control Platform? I imagine there are many techniical considerations to making Pandora work as smoothly as it does. Keep up the good work.

PLEASE DON'T CHANGE. ALWAYS BE FREE. I DON'T RECORD CD'S ARE EVEN BUY THEM. THIS IS GREAT FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME. WHEN YOU GET ON THE INTERNET IF IT SAY'S IT'S FREE, YOU KNOW THAT MEANS FOR A FREE WEEK OR SOME BULL. I KNOW YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE ADS BEFORE LONG. DO IT WITH NOT HAVING THE ADS LOUDER THAN THE RADIO.

i just want to say this site is the best. i have heard alot of online stations. they are all the same. they play the same song a thousand times. here if you don't like it, you don't have to hear it again. for that you are #1.

If you need to do maintenance, just do it. We all have to be grateful, don't worry if your servers are in read mode only.

Posted by: Betsy at June 10, 2006 07:37 AM
Thanks Pandora!! You have given me a whole new lease on life about music! I've often listened to various genres, without really knowing who played what - and whenever I wanted something to add to my iPod, I wouldn't know what to look for. You've given me what I've been looking for. Keep it going - you've got a customer/listener for LIFE! Peace!

Thanks again for keeping us posted.
If every corporation were as careful and courteous about letting its customers know what was going on BEFORE they had to ask, the world would be a MUCH happier place.
Ever think of turning the Pandora Approach to Customer Communication into some sort of training seminar for companies? (Joke. Sort of.)
As usual, I am glad to see you are thriving and look forward to seeing - I mean, HEARING - what you all do next.

p.s. I just got a "reload" message, I assume this is related to the change?
Posted by: jay at June 10, 2006 08:52 AM
Oh! Oh! I just reloaded and I see at least one of the changes.
You have fixed one of my teeny weeny very petty pet peeves in your usual clever and elegant way.
Have I said you all are brilliant recently?
BRILLIANT I say.
Pardon me, I must dance about in front of the computer.

Posted by: troy at June 10, 2006 09:41 AM
Good upgrade, but the music industry got you: You cut short the song skipping from ten to two per hour. Which makes it like any other radio station on the internet.
Posted by: Tom at June 10, 2006 09:56 AM
Hi Tom,
You can skip six times per hour on Pandora. You are right that this is a change -- it had been ten per hour. We recently received updated information about what was acceptable in this regard and it's important to us to respect the artist, labels, and rights societies wishes with respect to this dimension of the service. We do not anticpate having to change this again in the future.

Posted by: Tom Conrad at June 10, 2006 10:00 AM
Sure, you should indeed respect artist, labels, and rights societies.
I created new stations now and as I said, there are only two skips, not six.
Posted by: Tom at June 10, 2006 10:19 AM
This is quite literally the most exciting music resource I've seen in a long time. Cheers.
If you're ever in need of a print designer, please feel free to contact me. I work in advertising as well as freelance in the music industry.
Keep up the good work.
Posted by: Hachem at June 10, 2006 10:28 AM
Hi again tom,
Wow... we really owe you one. Not at all sure how this slipped through the cracks but you are entirely right. It certainly wasn't our intent - that's a bug.
Apparently the problem only happens right after you create the station; if you reload the website you'll get the full six.
We're starting work on a fix right now.
Thanks again,
Tom

so far, I'm digg'en Pandora compared to the others I've supported for a short time....
Posted by: frieda at June 10, 2006 10:33 AM
Hi all,
We've fixed the skip limit problem. You can skip six songs per hour as designed now. Thanks so much to Tom for helping point out the problem.

Hey Pandora Staff:
Congrats your now 14th on google for the search term "internet radio". When I first searched for pandora it was several pages into the results (and I have my results set to 100 per page lol). Keep up the good work. Your well on the way to blowing all competition out of the water.

the new additions are just great! thanks so much for all the hard work and the wonderful creation that is pandora!
Posted by: pbnj at June 10, 2006 03:30 PM
I was wondering why you guys dont make a user interface for some of the more popular interfaces such as Windows MCE available for premium users or somthing of the sort. I would really enjoy being able to listen to pandora in my living room without having to go buy a slingbox and set it up when i already have a computer sitting there. Otherwise, love the project and i wish it were around about 20 years ago when i was just getting into music. Darn internet and its slow progression :)
Keep up the great work

This is the best music discovery/listening service I've encountered though not perfect, but what is? My only REAL problem at this point is that I'm unable to access the definitions of shared stations. I know it's temporary, but wanted to throw this stone in your shoe to encourage rapid resolution of the glitch. Keep up the great work!
Posted by: Stephen at June 10, 2006 05:49 PM
I wanted to leave you a note to tell you how much i love your site. I think that this is a great idea, and it works wonderfully. It is so nice to finally have acess to an online radio station that plays music not only in relation to what you specify in your intrest category, but also to have the song change immediately if you do not like what is playing. I love the graphics of the slides having the album cover on them.
Thanks again!!!
A newly addicted pandora listener,
Calyn

Why did you replace the "Close this menu" with an X? I liked the "Close the menu" better...
Posted by: Pieter De Decker at June 11, 2006 06:21 AM
That explains my confusion! I noticed both your "tiny surprise" and went looking for other changes, and a deleted station that showed up for awhile then disappeared again. Congrats again for a superb and awesome music service. I'm addicted. Part of my routine in starting my computer!

Pandora is such a great idea! Well done. I listen to Pandora all day, everyday at work. It's sometime hard to concentrate as I always want to check out who is playing. I discovered so much through Pandora. Thank you for your work and for keeping this free!
Also, thanks for the new features!
Any plans in adding some french music?
Posted by: Chloe at June 11, 2006 08:07 PM
Just one complaint: After your latest change to the album covers, the artists' names are truncated. (The album names also are truncated, but I care less about that.)
Posted by: DC Fait at June 11, 2006 08:30 PM
Truly amazing project. My students have begun to ask me "Who is it this morning Mr. W?" when they walk into class. This is remarkable and only getting better.
One question; where's the best place to leave listening suggestions? I've got 400+ CDs and I've put in some jazz names that haven't found a match. Rock hits have been dead on. Can't wait for classical to get up and running.
Thanks a MILLION for your efforts.

DC Fait: Just hover your mouse over the name and it should scroll nicely for you in order to read the full text.
Posted by: Andre at June 12, 2006 05:15 AM
WOW! I love that you guys also made it so that titles now scroll when there is overflow, instead of disappearing behind the album cover. The new menu confused the crap out of me for a minute - for some reason I couldn't figure out what it was that I was looking at, but i got used to it.
=) Thanks for all you do!

Posted by: Mark at June 13, 2006 01:54 AM
Love the new album titles. One minor suggestion: lose the "by:" and "on:" labels. It's pretty obvious what they are.
Posted by: Bob at June 13, 2006 01:07 PM
I love the new album titles. I really like that it tells me who the song is by and what album it's on. Pandora has introduced me to a lot of new artists and I would have a hard time knowing which is the song name and which is the group name if it didn't have the labels.
Thank you for all the work you do. I'm still addicted and still telling everyone I know to come check it out.
