....more of Pandora's Music Analysts....
Last week I shed a little light on what it's like to be one of the people who analyzes all of the songs you hear on Pandora. Here's a few more stations on which you can hear the musical skills of some of our Music Analysts. It's fun for me to get to showcase such great and widely varied music, all coming out of the people in our office!
More next week...

René Peña-Govea (left, with Melody at right) sings and plays the accordion in her family band, La Familia Peña-Govea. You've got to hear this; it's two parents and their two daughters playing traditional Colombian, Tex-Mex and Mexican music.
Ariah Firefly, up-and-coming pop star and long-time Pandoran, sings lush R&B-inflected pop that's both ethereal and powerful. Take a listen: you'll like it!
Darian Gray, one of our newest Analysts, is always smiling and always game. (we like that in our co-workers!) Dynamic is the name of his catchy band, which is R&B mixed with hip hop, rock and some drum and bass.
The Patrick Greene Trio , starring our own Analyst Patrick Greene, consists of Guitar, Organ, and Drums (aka GOD). Listen up for some, as he puts it, "Jazz Funk Post Bop Straight Ahead Modern High Energy Spiritual" music.

Happy Monday!
cheers, Lucia

Hi,
Please work on having all stations come in at the same volume.

Sorry to say that after a mere 2 days, I have UN-installed Pandora from my system...I found that I did not like at all being "forced" to listen to music that was not what I asked for, and being limited to skipping only 3 or 4 songs was absolutely dreadful!! Did not at all like the interface, as it hogged my desktop, took too long to load, and did not provide convenient enough access to skip songs while trying to do other computer tasks...I had the feeling that I should never have opened Pandora's box!!! Fortunately, I was able to put her back into it without much trouble with my Uninstaller!!! There you have the gist of things. While I do like being exposed to new music, I don't like it being chosen FOR me...When I want to listen to Gershwin, I want to listen to Gershwin...not something remotely un-close....no matter what your idiotic analysts propose as being "similar"...I studied music for many, many years, and disagreed immensely with their choices for listening...These, of course, are my opinions, and perhaps there are many who will disagree...I wish you luck in continuing forward, but must say that unless you address these issues, I will not re-download from your site...

on the above comments:
...talk about not being related, those comments have nothing to do with the post. I guess some people just can't handle variety.
and now my comment (on the posting):
Any way, I love these postings -- Thanks!!
I'm listening to La Familia Pena-Govea right now.
The thing I love most (and I think what most people love) about Pandora is variety and discovering new music. I also love that pandora is run by people that are fun & interesting (and talented!)
Cheers!

Ira Schneider--> listen necrophagist radio and you won't be disapointed ;)
Keep up the great work !! the interface is near perfect and my stations are getting better and better. It would be cool if we could put a comment on the songs we bookmark, so we remember what kind of song it was :|

Wow, straight to the grievances. Well, if thats how its going to be...
Ok, I have to say "thank you" for Backstage, I finally see why I've been having so many problems with my eclectic stations. If anyone is having trouble with stations seeded with off-the-beaten-path songs, try this:
Search Backstage for the artist (or the album). Then, go to the album that the seed song came from. If you'll notice, next to the "Track List" there is a little "(try tracks 1, 2...)". If your seed song is among the suggested tracks, you should be ok, but if its not, then you'll never be happy with what that station plays. If you click on a song that is listed in the "(try tracks...)" list, you'll notice that there is a "Features of this song" list. But if you click on a song that isn't suggested in the list, you'll notice that there aren't any features. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this tells me that Pandora doesn't have any information on that song and a station seeded by it is doomed to be based, at BEST on the artist's info, but apparently, more likely, Pandora tries matching the other suggested tracks from that specific album. I don't understand why Pandora lets you start a station based on songs that they don't have information for. They have the tracks in the system, so they'll play on that station only because you have specifically asked for them, but they won't play songs that sound specifically like those song that don't have "features" listed on Backstage.
Exibit A: I have a station seeded with "Burgundy Blues", a song on Breakestra's album "Hit The Floor". "Burgundy Blues" is an instumental jam featuring a guest flute soloist. To my surprise I get rap song after rap song, I check Backstage, low and behold, the only track I'm suggested to "try", i.e. Pandora has info on, is "Family Rap", a song with guest rap artists on it.
I understand that there are a lot of songs out there and the scope of what is being attempted, but at leaest be up front about what songs are likely to be successful and which ones are doomed to failure.
Thank you again, however, for Backstage, I can now avoid so much of the headache I've had in the past by checking that the songs I choose as seeds have, indeed, been analysed.

Re: mr. errin fass
I didn't realize there was a download/install version . . . for me it was as simple as visiting (or not visiting) pandora.com.
At any rate, it's no wonder you didn't enjoy your pandora experience, at some point you misunderstood its purpose and mistook it for a free, steaming CD player of sorts. Pandora is all about discovering new music based on what you've already established you like. Sometimes, it has an easier time finding what you enjoy than others -- my best results come from starting stations on a per song rather than per artist basis, as a single artist can have a greatly varrying sound spanning not just different songs but albums over a career.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to hear what you want to hear when you want to hear it--but if you're ever feeling bored (or adventurous) and want to hear something new . . . you might consider giving pandora another go, this time with the expectation to not necessarily hear precisely what you intended. :)
Personally, I'm amazed daily by the discovery of new music I've essentially always loved without knowing.
Posted by: Allen at June 20, 2006 08:46 AM
I wanted to let you know that I am really enjoying the Pandora experience. I have recommended Pandora to the readers of my blog and have received many emails thanking me for bringing Pandora to their attention.
Keep up the good work. You just keep making it better.

"mr. errin" you are by far the most ignorant down right stupid person i have ever read a post by; "Sorry to say that after a mere 2 days, I have UN-installed Pandora from my system" Pandora does not install software on your computer. And the rest of your post is just whining over the very concept of Pandora, if you don't like the concept you wont like the product. DUH!?
Posted by: Desidious at June 20, 2006 11:24 AM
Mr. Fass..
Uninstall? It's called closing your browser.
Posted by: chicolax33 at June 20, 2006 11:26 AM
I want to be a music analyst! Got room for an ethnomusicologist?
The concept of the project is awesome and I am amazed that this user-friendly portal to new music is open to everyone for use. Pandora is musical gift for this digital age! THANK YOU!
Posted by: Kristine at June 20, 2006 02:29 PM
Yo! What's up with that girl Erin...music snob. The whole point is to find new music silly - not listen to stuff you already know you like...also not sure how good your computer is that you have apparently so many issues with the player - are you using a typewriter by any chance? It's 2006, I mean really... Anyway - great site! Love it! Everyone at our office is hooked on it. Great way to listen to some diverse, uninterupted music during the work day. Definitely found some new bands I like and some new songs from old favorites. Keep it up guys - you're doing great!! And don't let people like Miss Sassypants "I've been studying music for years" slow you down! ;D
Posted by: Alicia Haglund at June 20, 2006 02:30 PM
Oh well here's another nail in Mr Erin's Fass' coffin but here goes.
Mr Ass would be far better served sticking to his CD collection if all he wants to listen to is Gershwin......
However is Mr Ass wants something a little different & some suggestive listens then open your browser my man & let Pandora educate you.
By the way for the record Pandora is the most amazing thing I've played with on the net & gets me through my work days consistently delivering constantly new music.
Yeah it takes a little while to refine that station responding to the I Like This not That questions (I got some Ashlee Simpson eeeek on my Indie rock station the other day) but it all works a treat & is educating me all the time on stuff I should be giving a spin to.
All I can say is some more Aussie music would be appreciated it's very thin (no recent INXS coz they're a bunch of wankers these days) on the ground & everyone knows how good the music we're producing these days is.
If you're looking for a volunteer analyst in the Southern Hemisphere look no further.
Big musical love :))

Just a suggestion... if you could have some way for the user to select which qualities of a song attract them and then find more songs in that manner. For instance, I just created a station using the Jeremy Camp song Take My Life. I like the song for it's lyrics (Christian music) and because it's loud rock. Optimally, I'd like to be able to narrow what Pandora plays to other Christian artists in the rock genre, but I'm not given that option. I've had nothing but secular music played so far. Just some food for thought.
Posted by: Andrew at June 22, 2006 08:51 AM
i think you should have stations that just play songs from a particular artist not a mix because some songs that play don't belong to that style of music
Posted by: deidriana at June 22, 2006 11:40 AM
Hi! Well, I think that got a bit out of hand. Maybe the person mixed up some things (like install/uninstall) but then some of the critics are quite okay. I also would prefer some non-browser software, some small windows or even better Opera (www.opera.com) widget...
What do you think?
PS: If you want to have more discussions, then please visit www.pandora-forum.com - the place where all the users can meet to discuss whatever they like (and want to rant about!).
Posted by: Michael at June 22, 2006 12:11 PM
I love the new service! I've had musicmatch for years and the variety has nose-dived this year. My only problem with Pandora-- I can't play uncensored hip hop at work...it would be great if paying subscribers could have the option of radio-friendly play so that we can enjoy pandora in all environments! Thanks!
Posted by: Chris K. at June 22, 2006 01:19 PM
hey guys thanks for all the hard work (and the free service!) i don't know what i'd do without pandora. i wish there was no song-skip limit, but if that's what'll keep this online, it's all good. but to you analysts- please no more numetal! MSI's not papa roach you know?
Posted by: jin at June 22, 2006 02:35 PM
I think they're doing a bang up job analyzing the music! It's definitely been getting better, no more jumping from Metric to ABBA etc. :).
I majored in Music and I play Jazz trumpet on the side, but I live in Canada. Too bad you can't have remote music analyzing, because I'd be hip with doing that.
Posted by: Dave at June 22, 2006 04:23 PM
A little question: Why not to give access also to the lyrics of the songs?
Posted by: Nuno Pereira at June 23, 2006 02:34 AM
My question to the analysts is: who had to do The Shaggs' album? Was entering it into the database a punishment for some particularly egregious bit of misbehavior? If so, spill.
Posted by: Mertseger at June 23, 2006 04:12 PM
Can someone follow up on ObiWanKeenobi's comment? There does seem to be a lack of song information for albums like, say, The Offspring's "Smash"; only the SINGLES "Come Out and Play", "Self Esteem" and "Gott a Get Away" have genome info, marked by a small "try track #3, 6, 7" beside the album title. The rest of the songs don't have any genome information. What's up with that?

i enjoy listening to the varieties of music played on pandora and i think listening to more music is alot better than listening to just the same over and over again. thanks
Posted by: isabel at July 5, 2006 07:19 PM
Brilliant idea, but has to improve.
Some suggestions:
Although I like to listen to unfamiliar material, I'd like to feel 'safe' within my chosen domain. In the choice of songs, could you give some weight to songs' popularity, as graded by other listeners?
And perhaps give some preference to new releases if one wishes to do so...
Also, can we see our profile of musical choice and be able to edit our preferences as they evolve?
And finally, please add more music from across the Atlantic (and the Pacific for that matter).
Keep up the good work!

I just stumbled across Pandora the other week and have really enjoyed listening to it.
I love the variety and its been great to find a few new bands that I haven't heard before.
I wonder though - is including David Hasselhoff in the music library taking diversity too far?
Giving the Hoff the thumbs down was moderately satisifying but it was still the most painful 30 seconds I've had in a long time!
Love your work though - is there a way for listeners to recommend new bands?
Posted by: Julian at July 13, 2006 08:28 AM
I have loved your kind of "show" us the world music, classifying by some precise way, just wonderful.
But, there´s still a problem, besides your work to classify it, to find the right way to select the musics and relate it, you cannot do it with propert if you don´t are part of there culture. I mean, when you classify a music just in portuguese letters but not the intension of this letters you lost all, most of time, all of the essence, the intention of the music. When you expand this network, netlinking, i sugest you: hire profeesional people of any country t classify their own music, you´ll more in the center of the ain. And this the be the differencial of some other intent like pandora.
Just a hint
Good Luck
You all are doing a great work
Posted by: Bruno at July 13, 2006 11:53 PM
Would be nice with you moderate the level of musics. When it change from ao song to another its noticible the difference from one to another...

Pandora is the perfect, new, original way to find and discover music that you never thought was out there.
Like the music you hear or not, it helps you refine your musical taste while also perhaps broadening it at the same time.

I was born in Brazil and I still hear a lot of brazilian artists. I believe "MPB" (popular brazilian music) would interest Pandora's listeners a lot!
I'm talking about artists like Marisa Monte, Los Hermanos, Paralamas do Sucesso, Tim Maia, Ed Motta, Djavan, Gilberto Gil, Maria Rita, Caetano Veloso, and many more great composers and performers.
Maybe you could check it out!

Another suggestion: make "attributes" searchable, to allow your listeners to discover some other artists with desired attributes. Perhaps add a search on music genres, too. (Else, how can I find sea chanteys, otherwise?)

So, look, I think Pandora is one of the coolest things I've come across on the web, but I don't understand what's taking so long to get streaming rights in Canada. I'd really like to enjoy it. Now I don't know the ins and outs of attaining these rights, but I've streamed alot of things off the web, and from some pretty low-quality sites, so I don't see why you guys can't seem to manage to stream in Canada. I mean I can stream the trial. What's the difference? Anyway, awesome site, just... honestly... how long can it take?

I was really impressed by some of the above comments. people try to analyse pandora like scholars read the bible. I like their theories though (it's fun that you don't give the rules). If you really want to match people desires, you will have to be more interactive than up or down. IMHO Pandora is a beauty & will improve with always more & more songs. My own theory is that you don't have that many halfgods in music (Olé by Coltrane still not added?). For the rest, I've discovered more artists important to me in 5 hours than in 5 years with my coltrane station. also love my roots manuva+birdy nam nam station. i love all my stations & I love you too.
